comeandaskquestionstofindoutwhoJesusis,fortheirheartstobeopen,andforgospelseedstobesowed.AsthesessionsarerunviaZoom,dopraythattheywillbefreefromtechnicalissues.ForeignDomesticHelpers–Leviticus19:33-34“Lovethemasyourself.”Thecommandsintheseversesexhortsustolovetheforeignersthatliveamongus.PrayforourfamilieswhoemployforeigndomestichelperstoconsiderhowtheycansharetheloveofChristwiththeirhelpers.Prayalsothattheupcomingcarepackdistribution(p.8)willblessmanyofthehelpersinourmidst.

OurWorldNorthIndia–PraiseGodmanynewfamilieswhoarecomingtofaithwhereourministrypartnerispresent.ThankGodforthisreceptivitytoGod.COVID-19positivecasesareincreasinginthisareaandthelockdowncontinuestobringbotheconomicandphysicalhardshiptothiswholearea.PrayfortheprovisionoftheJulysupportforourministrypartner’sworkersfamiliesinthisregion.Central&WestBengal,India–HeavyrainshavedamagedonechurchbuildinginWestBengalandcausedfloodinginCentralIndiawhereourministrypartnersare.Prayfortheirprotectionandsafety.WestNepal–Ourpartnerhasjustfinishedplantingthepaddyandwilldependmuchonthisriceharvest.Praythattheirharvestwillbearfruitandnotbewashedawaybyheavyrains.

IntheForeword,heappropriatesJohnMackay’sillustrationofpersonssittingonafrontbalconyofahousewatchingtravellersgobyontheroadbelow.TheirjourneyisapictureofChristianlife.The‘balconeers'andtravellersmaybethinkingoverthatsamejourney,yettheirproblemsdiffer.The‘balconeers'arebasicallyonlookers,andtheirproblemsaretheoretical.Incomparison,thetravellersfaceproblemswhich,thoughhavingtheoreticalangles,areessentiallypractical-“problemsofthe‘which-way-to-go’and‘how-to-make-it’type,problemswhichcallnotmerelyforcomprehensionbutfordecisionandactiontoo.”WhileDrPackersayshis“KnowingGod”isabookfortravellers,Iwouldsayhisoveralltheologicalperspectiveandteachingprioritiesasbeingorientedfortravellerstoo.

ThatcertainlywasmyexperiencewhenIstudiedsystematictheologywithhimatRegentCollege.“Packerbyname,packerbytrade,”waswhatheusedtosay,packingandorganisingtheologicalconceptsintoclearlystructuredmorselsofsoulnourishment.LikehisbelovedPuritans,histeachingwasneveronlytheoretical,butpushedtowardsthe‘which-way-to-go’and‘how-to-make-it’typeofquestions.

ForDrPacker,theTrinitywasnotjustamathematicalconundrum,butadisclosureofdivinelovetome.Theatonementwasnotjustatheory,buthowsinnerslikemecanbereconciledtoGod.Theinerrancyofscripturewasnotjustsomethingtobedefended,butanexpressionofGod’strustworthycharacter.
