Ithaca Looking To Take Advantage Of Overall Team Speed This SeasonGreg Chrapek Sports Scene

With the return of a solid group of skill-position players and good team speed, the Ithaca Yellowjackets are primed to get back to dou-ble-digit wins this fall.

Last season was the first in ten years that Ithaca failed to hit dou-ble-digit wins. With the talent on hand this year, Ithaca is determined to increase its win total.

“The outlook is very good for the upcoming season,” said Ithaca coach Terry Hessbrook. We are always excited to get football season started in Ithaca. Our team does not have a great number of participants, so we will have to be fortunate enough to stay healthy.”

On offense, the Yellowjackets have a number of impact players that will keep opposing defensive coordinators up all night. At quar-terback, junior Brady Hessbrook (6-0, 185) is one of the top junior

quarterbacks in the state. Hessbrook is a three-year starter who brings plenty of skill and experience to the position.

Senior Brayden Shaw (6-1, 200) is a four-year starter. A big running back with good strength and speed, Shaw is also a defensive standout at linebacker.

In the trenches, senior Chanc McCormack (5-10, 220) is back for his third year on the varsity. A strong player with a great attitude, McCormack will be an anchor along both the offensive and defensive lines.

Junior wide receiver Zach Poff (5-10, 180) returns for his second season as a varsity starter. A quick, elusive receiver who also plays defensive back, Poff led Ithaca in receptions and receiving yards last season.

Fellow junior Chance Risner (5-10, 160) is another talented receiver. A two-way starter last year, Risner is a playmaker on offense with very

good speed and is a disrupting force on defense at outside linebacker.

Junior running back Derek Draher (6-0, 200) is another option at running back. A physical runner, Draher started at linebacker last season and will provide impact plays on both side of the football.

Up front, senior Dalton Williams (6-1, 250) is a returning starter who will help fortify both the offensive and defensive lines.

“Our strong points will be our team speed,” Hessbrook said. “We have a few guys that are returning that have very good speed. We also return most of our skilled players from a year ago.”

Hard work and teamwork are key to success this season.

“We must work as hard as the teams before us to earn our stripes,” Hessbrook said. “We must figure out ways to get the ball to our play-makers early on and we must stay healthy.”

Linemen, Linebackers Spearhead Alma Attack

Humm Making Key Contribution As Alma Athletic Director

John Raffel Sports Scene

Dan Falor is excited with his linemen and linebackers this season.

The Alma head football coach has reasons for that.

Among the reasons are seniors Logan Fitzgerald, Coleten Garrett and Ryan Calhoun.

Fitzgerald is an offensive and defensive tackle, who is 5-feet-11, 200 pounds. He is expected to be a mainstay on both sides of the line and said he’s anticipating having

his best season.Garrett is 5-7, 205, and will play

center and middle linebacker. He started at center last season.

“I’m kind of shorter than a lot of the D linemen I go against,” he said. “I have a lot of luck against the linemen I go against.”

Garrett has a new quarterback he’ll be snapping the ball to this season but is confident it will go smoothly.

“You have to have good commu-nication with the quarterback at all time,” he said. “You have to keep working.’’

Garrett said his role on defense will be going to the ball and mak-ing a lot of tackles.

He and the other two linemen

had a lot of summer work.“It’s looking good,” he said of

the 2019 Panthers. “Everybody is working hard for a spot. There’s a lot of depth.”

Calhoun will be an offensive tackle and outside linebacker.

“I feel I get off the ball really well,” he said of his offensive line spot. “We’ve been in the weight room a lot and working on tech-nique.”

Calhoun is confident in his abili-ties as a tackler, one-on-one.

“I’ve improved in that I think less about what to do and go out and do it,” he said.

Calhoun plans on being a leader for the Alma defense.

“Speed and athleticism will be a

strength of the Alma defense,” he said. “It’s a very young team this year. We have a lot of juniors. But we can be just good this year.”

John Raffel Sports Scene

Steve Humm has worn various hats for athletics at Alma High School. He is now the Panther athletic director and has been track coach in the past. But this year for the football program, he is back again as defensive coordinator.

It’s his fifth year as defensive coordi-nator, and he likes the aspects that come with the job.

“It takes discipline, and the aggressive-ness that’s necessary to be a solid defense, and I like the game planning, figuring out what other teams run and how you’re going to stop them,” he said.

The focus during summer has been “working on techniques,” Humm said. “We have a lot of young kids coming up as we lost a lot. Two of our most experienced kids have injuries (as of late July). We’re trying to get the new kids up to playing at the varsity level.”

Humm said the defense mixes things up to try to catch the offense off guard.

“Each week it’s different,” Humm said. “You game plan for each opponent. It depends on what the offense is going to do. We’re young, but we’ll be physical and aggressive. The challenge is getting the players to play to the speed of the varsity level and the complexity of things; we do more things at the varsity level. I work with the DBs so there’’s more coverages than what they’re used to at the varsity level.”

Saginaw Heritage Poised To Build On Last Year’s Winning SeasonGreg Chrapek Sports Scene

With a large group of players re-turning from a team that posted the school’s first winning season in five years, the Saginaw Heritage football team is excited to get the new season started.

A host of players are back for the Hawks who turned in a 5-4 record last year. On offense, quarterback Keegan Robertson is a three-year starter who is back to run the offense. Senior Darius Hogg and junior Jordon Keahey head up the running back group with Keason Woods, Brady Dinninger and Chris Parker returning at receiver.

“We have a lot of kids back,” said Heritage coach Matt Peterson. “We

have our quarterback, our running backs and pretty much all our receiv-ers back. We graduated four of our five starting linemen so we have to get our offensive line ready to go.”

Overall, Heritage has over 40 players on the team and the depth will be a strong point. Last year’s success and winning season also has the team hungry for more.

“Last year was a big stepping stone for us,” Peterson said. “The kids have to believe they can do it. Last year was the first winning season in five or six years. If we can do all the little things right, we can be one of the top teams in the conference. We have to do the little things better. If we do that it will get us up to make a playoff push this year.” Keason Woods (5) and Darius Hogg (25) are two of the

veterans that return for Saginaw Heritage this season.

Ithaca fullback/linebacker Brayden Shaw is back for his fourth season on the Ithaca varsity team.

Returning Vets, Stadium Upgrades Have Haslett Football Excited

DeWitt Looking To Carry On Legacy Of Last Year’s Senior Class

Mason Set To Be Lansing-Area Power

Greg Chrapek Sports Scene

After earning a share of the CAAC Red championship last year, the Haslett football team is poised for even more success this season.

A talented group of seniors return for Haslett this season. The senior group turned in an 8-2 overall record last year and 4-1 conference record as the Vikings

shared the league title with St. Johns and Williamston.

Four starters return on both sides of the line to anchor this year’s squad. On offense, senior Andrew Waters and Devin Nash give the Vikings a pair of danger-ous receivers. Drew Dabler (5-11, 220) is being recruited by a num-ber of Division 2 and 3 schools and lines up at H-Back or tight. Kyle Pinkelman (6-2, 225) anchors the

offensive line. A quartet of starters also return

to the defense. Dabler returns at defensive end with Nate Polston leading the way at linebacker. The Vikings return a pair of veteran starters in the secondary in junior Xavier Thelen (6-2, 175) and Nash.

Several newcomers to the lineup are poised to contribute as well. Seniors Marcus Medrano and

Kale Schiebner are in the mix at quarterback. Senior Jake Boss and junior Chance Cook add to the talent at wide receiver.

“We have a solid core of seniors returning this fall,” said Haslett coach Charlie Otlewski. “We will need other seniors to step up as well as some underclassmen to be successful again. Our strength this year is the mix of experi-ence we have in both skill positions and the offensive and defensive lines. The key for a successful season is staying healthy

and early success.” Haslett opens the season at

Coldwater and then debuts at home against Lansing Sexton before hitting the road to Ma-son and Fowlerville in weeks three and four.

Making the season even more of a thrill is the work that has been done at the stadium.

“We’ve had some ma-jor renovations to Jamie

Gent Stadium,” Otlewski said. “It will make it the premier stadium in mid-Michigan.”

Greg Chrapek Sports Scene

Graduation day hit the DeWitt football team hard this past June, but while a large senior class has moved on, the Panthers have a sizable group of players on hand to carry on the winning tradition.

Last year’s DeWitt’s senior led the Panthers to a 12-1 overall record, with the lone loss coming in the Division 2 state semifinals against eventual state champion Detroit King.

“We graduated a tremendous senior class from last year,” said

DeWitt coach Rob Zimmerman, “but this team has continued to improve throughout the offseason.”

On offense, a pair of starters return from last year’s squad. Tight end Mason Gilbert, who has committed to Eastern Kentucky, returns to provide impact plays. Noah Behovitz returns to anchor this year’s offensive line.

Drew Schorfhaar is stepping in at quarterback with Andrew Debri and Collin Dinninger handling the running game. Michael Nehf and Tommy Brandell will also be key contributors along the offensive line.

On defense, five starters return. The Panthers are solid along the defensive line with the return of Brock Yabs, Jacob Redinger Beho-vitz and Gilbert. Debri returns to head up the linebacking corps. Jake Spedoske is a veteran returning to the defensive backfield.

“The strength of the team will be the front six on defense with five of them returning from last season,” Zimmerman said.

DeWitt is also blending in some promising newcomers. Tommy McIntosh, Luke Bresser and Bryce Debri will see time at receiver. Conner Pochert and Kyren Geller

are a pair of young linemen to watch for. On the defensive side of the ball, Blake Beachnau, Cooper Brum-field and Grant Uyl are a trio of young lineback-ers to look for. Tyler Holtz, McIntosh, Debri and Bresser will contribute in the secondary.

“The returning seniors learned a great deal from a great senior class last fall and the current juniors

have not lost a game since fourth grade,” Zimmerman said. “We will be very young in many positions so growing up in a hurry will be crucial. We expect to compete for another league championship.”

John Raffel Sports Scene

Gary Houghton’s Mason football team plays in a tough league with the likes of Williamston and St. John’s. But he still likes his team’s prospects.

It’s his third season as coach. The squad was 5-4 last year after a 2-7 mark in 2017.

Michael McGuire, Chance Strickland, Mason Stewart, Alex Charlot, James Horn, Jack Gilchrist, Derek Hampton and Brice Isenhath are top returners.

Ethan Bond, Jedian Acevedo, Chance Mullins and Conor Wil-liamson are top newcomers

“(Offensive tackle) Gilchrist has seen interest from Eastern

Michigan, Cincinnati University, Youngstown State, Michigan Tech, Ferris State and Saginaw Valley,” Houghton said. “McGuire has seen interest from Davenport Univer-sity, Ferris State and Northwood University.”

Key players on offense are Michael McGuire (TB), Chance Strickland (WR/QB), Mason Stew-

art (FB/TE), James Horn (OG), Gilchrist (OT), Derek Hampton (OG), Brice Isenhath (C). Key defensive players are Michael McGuire (S), Chance Strickland (S/C), Mason Stewart (LB), Alex Charlot (LB), Jack Gilchrist (DT) and Jackson Lockwood (S/C). “We should be improved, after starting six sophomores last year,” Houghton said. “We

are returning some experienced players. Our running game should

be solid, combined with an improved passing game. Defensively, we return most of our starters. Running the ball and being physical on defense (will be a strength).”

“Getting off to a good start and winning close games that we lost last season,” will be critical Houghton said.

Saginaw Swan Valley On Mission To Return To Ford Field This Year

Veteran Quarterback Brady Devereaux Returns To Lead The Way For Hemlock

Greg Chrapek Sports Scene

After falling a game shy or its goal of playing for a state champi-onship at Ford Field last year, the Saginaw Swan Valley football team is determined to take the final step this season.

While several key players have graduated from last year’s team, a veteran core of returning players has the shared goal of making it to Ford Field for the second time in the past three years.

Carson Berenyi (6-1, 260), a four-year varsity player, is one of the key veterans back this year. An anchor of the defensive line, Berenyi and his teammates have been hard at work since the day after dropping a 14-7 decision to eventual state champion Hudson-ville Unity Christian in last year’s Division 5 state semifinals.

“Our goal is to work harder than before,” Berenyi. “We’re using last year’s semifinal loss to fuel the fire. We have been putting in more time studying film and after practice workouts.”

Senior Chase Smith (6-2, 220) is entering his third year on the varsi-ty. A linebacker, Smith believes the chemistry of this year’s team will make a big impact.

“Our team chemistry is our strong point,” Smith said. “We work together well as a team. We want to make it farther in the play-offs this year and working together will be a key to that.”

Like Smith, senior wide receiver/defensive back Hunter Gonzalez is also a three-year varsity player. Last season Gonzalez was part of a Swan Valley defense that limited seven of 13 opponents to sin-gle-digit scoring outputs. Gonzalez

sees the same kind of potential in this year’s defense.

“Our defense is going to be really good this year,” Gonzalez said. “We have a lot of guys back on defense and we’ve been working hard to get even better.”

While Swan Valley has a strong core of veterans back, they also have an infusion of young talent that will make an impact. Senior tight end/line-backer Ara Nab, also a three-year veteran, likes what he sees from the young Vikings.

“I’m really excited about some of our younger kids,” Nab said. “We have a lot of hard-working young kids coming up. We have a lot of

big shoes to fill this year but we also have a lot of returnees. All of us are ready to go.”

Greg Chrapek Sports Scene

What a difference a year makes.A year ago, Brady Devereaux

entered the season as Hemlock’s backup quarterback. This fall, the talented senior enters the season as one of the premier quarterbacks in the area.

As a junior, Devereaux was looking to gain experience as the backup signal caller. That all changed in game one when the starting quarterback went down with a season-ending injury. Devereaux entered the game with

Hemlock trailing Vassar 14-0 at halftime. Devereaux helped to lead a comeback victory that started the Huskies on to an 8-2 record. Along the way the talented dual-threat quarterback rushed for 26 touch-downs and passed for four scores.

With a year of starting expe-rience under his belt, Devereaux is poised to build on last year’s success. Plenty of talent joins Devereaux on offense led by senior wide receiver Aaryn Sylvester. The Huskies also have some young talent poised to make an impact in sophomores Corbin Larkin at wide receiver and Robert Knapik at

running back.“We have a lot

of young skill guys who are coming along,” Devereaux said.

Along the line, Hemlock returns Cody Pitt and Hunter Hahn with tight end Brayden Green.

Green is a leader of the defense at the middle linebacker position. Pitt and Hahn also return to the defensive line while Dever-

eaux is a veteran safety. John Ma-jewski and Jacob Kelley also return

to the defensive line while Sylvester is a key returnee at safety.

St. Johns Expected To Be Title Contender

Mount Pleasant Will Have To Compensate For Key Loss

John Raffel Sports Scene

St. John’s football team has been stuck at the five-win mark for the past three seasons.

They’re hoping the win total will be up significantly this season with talented players like Jaymn Med-

lock, Sam Hallead and Brodrick Miller.

Medlock, a junior running back and linebacker, is going to be in his second varsity season.

“Our starting back went down and I kind of came in and took over pretty well. I’m kind of one-cut player,” Medlock said. “I find

the hole and make cuts. I don’t have too much trouble with it. You can always improve on it.”

Medlock also plays on defense and does a good job of anticipating where the ball is going.

“I have a pretty high football IQ,” he said.

As for team prospects “We lost a lot of seniors last year,” Medlock said. “We had a lot of underclass-men starting on varsity last year. We made it to the first round of the playoff last year and our goal is to go farther.”

Sam Hallead is a senior two-way lineman who is a second-year varsity player.

“It went very well,” he said;

“I definitely have the physical strength. I think I’m effective both sides of the ball.

“I think we can go farther in the playoffs this year. We have a lot of starters coming ing back.”

Junior Brodrick Miller plays running back, receiver and safety and will be in his second varsity team.

“It went pretty good last year,” he said. “We finished 50-50, it was decent.”

Miller characterizes himself as a finesse runner. He might occasion-ally play the slot.

He’s also a defensive back.A lot of work was done on pass

defense over the summer.“We do primary cover four

defense,” Miller said. “It’s a lot of man coverage.”

This season “we can do a lot,” Miller said. “We have a lot of good offensive linemen and we have a lot of good skill players.”

John Raffel Sports Scene

Mount Pleasant football coach Jason McIntyre reached a milestone last season when his team went 10-1 and won the Sag-inaw Valley Conference championship.

McIntyre crossed the 100-win line. He now has a 108-36 record in 14 seasons.

Returning starters who are seniors are Jo Ostrowsky (WR/DB), Tyler Huennaman (TE/DE), Zach Mogg (DB/RB), Willem Miret (OL/DL), Ben Velguth (OL/DL), Luke Taylor (DB) and Demetri Griffin (WR/DB)

Returning starters who are juniors are Josh Schell (DE/TE) and Chase Preston (OL/DL).

Key losses included Hunter Genia (OL) Evan Grossnickle (OL), Damian Loya (OL/DL), Jackson Ostrowsky (QB), Spencer MacGregor (WR), Hunter Norris (LB/FB) and Noah Schicht (OL/LB).

Key newcomers are seniors Malachi Wilson (LB) and Cooper Phillips (QB/RB), and juniors Parker Mitchell (RB), Owen Foust (OL/DL), Kyle Borodychuk (OL/LB), Mark Goenner (WR/DB) Anton Ricum-strict (WR/DB) and Griffin Brookens (LB).

“We will have some big shoes to fill, especially on offense coming off our 10-1 SVL championship team from last season,” McIntyre said. “I expect most of the teams in the SVL north to be improved from last year, meaning we will have a tough schedule ahead of us. Our younger players

earned a great deal of experience during last season and have worked very hard in preparation for what should be a very competitive pre-season camp. I believe we have as good as front four on defense as we have had at MP, led by three-year starter Tyler Huenneman.

“We also return a 1,000-yard rusher in Zach Mogg. However, the success of this team will have a lot to do with how soon we gain experience and confidence at QB, Oline and in the secondary. Our challenge as coaches will be how quickly we can get our young players to play at the speed and intensity that is required at the varsity foot-ball level. I have been really impressed with our senior leadership in the off-season, and this will be key in how we handle adversity throughout the season.”

St. Louis Sharks Expect To Have Special Season

Breckenridge Faces Unique Challenges This Season

John Raffel Sports Scene

St. Louis’ football team has had only one winning record in the last 10 years but Shark fans are confi-dent this could be a special season.

So are the players including JT Starry (74), a junior right guard.

“We’ll be younger,” Starry said. “We have a lot people who need to get bigger and work harder.”

Starry has been on the varsity since he was a freshman.

“We hope to make it to the play-offs,” he said.

He’ll get no argument from

teammate Luke Maxwell (55) who is also a junior but will be a third-year varsity player.

“The first two seasons have gone pretty well,” he said. “My freshman year, we beat Beaverton in the first round of the playoffs. That was a big game. I believe we’re capable of making it to the playoffs this year. I believe our offensive line will be a strength for us.”

Trae Garcia is an H back and hopes to help the Sharks have a talented running game.

“I love the competition,” Garcia said.

On defense he’s a linebacker and anticipates getting plenty of tackles in that spot.

Garcia said tenacity is a team

strength.“We’re not scare of anyone,” he

said.Patrick Hanley (21) is a quarter-

back and safetyA senior, Hanley was at wide

receiver. He’ll be QB this year.“I have a high IQ on decision

making,” he said. “I know where to get the ball. I’m a very mobile quarterback as well. I feel I’m a dual threat.

“We’re a young team, but our guys are experienced. I think we can make some noise. We have the right skills and tools and the right amount of commitment to make the playoffs.”

John Raffel Sports Scene

Coach Kris Robinson and the Breckenridge Huskies were one game away from taking it all last season.

But it was still a year for the ages for Huskie football fans.

A very special team rolled to a 5-0 record to win the Mid-State Activities Conference title. But after a 9-0 regular season, four more games put Breckenridge in the Division 8 state championship tilt at Ford Field.

The Huskies lost to Reading 39-20 in a battle of 13-0 teams.

“We had that conversation a lot in that I thought we felt we had a group of kids who could make a run at it.” Robinson said. “Your

goal ultimately is to make the state finals and see what happens. At that point, every team is good. We got some breaks last year but we thought we could make a run.”

Graduation took its toll. The Huskies lost 11 seniors who contributed to the cause including Carter Staley, a four-year starting quarterback who was 14-of-19 for 177 yards in the title game and Hunter Collins, a four-year starting running back.

“We lost a lot of good talented kids,” Robinson said.

Top returners include Garrett Fitzgerald, a sophomore on last year’s team who is a linebacker and set to be the team’s primary running back this season.

“He’ll be very good,” Robinson

said.Spencer Ramirez is a tackle and

guard who had seven tackles in the title game.

Payton Huntoon will be a wing-back and cornerback.

“We’re fast,” Robinson said. “We’re not a big team where we can go between the tackles and grind it out. This year we are small, but we’re a bolt of lightning all over the place. We’ll use different strategy.”

Robinson isn’t quite sure what this team’s prospects will be.

“It’s a unique group of kids,” he said. “We’re only at 18 kids. We’re trying to use strategy to utilize our kids. They played 14 games last year. I don’t know where the ceiling is with these kids. They can do anything.”

Freeland To Rely On Senior Class As It Faces Loaded Schedule

Peyton Smith Feeling Right At Home As New Traverse City Central Quarterback

Greg Chrapek Sports Scene

Although small in number, Freeland’s senior class is a quality group. Along with providing lead-ership, the Falcon seniors fill some important positions for a team that is facing a rugged schedule this season.

“We’re young, really young,” said Freeland coach Kevin Townsend. “We have up to six sophomores up on varsity and a small senior class, but we have a good senior class.”

Those seniors will play a key role for Freeland as it faces six teams that made the playoffs among the nine teams on the schedule.

Senior running backs Trey Mor-gan, Jack Dreyer and Jaden DeBeau return to lead the ground game. Senior Elijah Vlassis is a returning quarterback. Vlassis missed most of last season after breaking his

collarbone in week three.Senior Aiden West returns at

fullback with senior captain Vinnie Kowalski anchoring the offensive line.

Kowalski anchors the defensive line while Dreyer, Morgan and West head up the linebacking group. DeBeau and Vlassis return in the secondary.

Among the non-seniors, junior Ben Wellnitz (te/db) and sophomores Alex Duley (te/db), Bryson Huckeby (qb/te) and Jacob Kundinger (rb/lb) return to fill key roles.

Seniors Thorin Magyar (ol/dl), Sean Musial (oc/dl) and Will Von-dette (of/dl) bring experience to the line of scrimmage while junior Easton Armstrong (rb/db) adds to the depth in the backfield.

“All four of the sophomores were up on the varsity last and

saw playing time,” Townsend said. “They were able to adapt to the speed of the game and they helped us out a lot.”

Freeland has qualified for the

playoffs the past 11 years and the challenge this season is to keep the streak going, a tough challenge given the schedule Freeland faces.

“We’ve had a good offseason,”

Townsend said. “We’ve made the playoffs 11 years in a row and the kids know it’s a tradition here. For the kids, the goal is to get the six wins and get to the playoffs again.”

Greg Chrapek Sports Scene

For many high school students, the summer time is a chance to relax and have some fun. For for-mer Ithaca student athlete Peyton Smith, this summer has been about as busy as it can get.

Smith, who spent his previous three years at Ithaca High School, transferred to Traverse City Cen-tral this summer when his family moved to the Traverse City area shortly after the 4th of July.

A multi-sport athlete and honor student, Smith has been busy pre-paring for the new football season with his new teammates at Central. Before beginning fall practice with the Trojans, Smith attended several football camps along with working with quarterback coaches Donovan

Dooley and Ryan Van Dyke from Quarterback University, one of the premier personal quarterback training programs in the state.

Smith also played for the Legacy Adidas Elite 7-on-7 team this summer that represented the state of Michigan and traveled na-tion-wide this summer. The team won the Midwest regional and the East Coast regional and turned in a strong performance at the National tournament.

Smith has also found time to put in time in the weight room as he has added 18 pounds to his 6-foot-4 plus frame and is up to 195 pounds.

In Smith, Traverse City Central is getting a quarterback who passed for almost 1,200 yards and 16 touchdowns while rushing for

545 yards and six touchdowns in five starts for Ithaca last season.

The Smith family moving to Tra-verse City was something that was always thought about said Peyton’s father Brett Smith.

“We’ve had a place up here in Traverse City for seven years,” Brett Smith said. “We’ve been devel-oping some land up here and we purchased a couple more spots for development. I’ve been up there helping my dad out and I’ve always to move up there. When I told Peyton about the move, he was all for it. It’s a beautiful area and there is a lot going on up here.”

Traverse City Central head coach Eric Schugars was more than happy that the beautiful Traverse City area played a role in the Smith’s decision to relocate.

“You don’t expect anything like this to happen,” Traverse City Central head coach Eric Schugars said to the Tra-verse City Record Eagle. “We live in a beautiful area, eh?.”

With his combi-nation of athletic ability and academic excellence, Smith has a number of collegiate programs recruiting him including Harvard, Yale and Dartmouth from the Ivy League. Smith’s older brother Travis is the starting quar-terback at Harvard.

Academics is very important in our family,” Brett Smith said. “You only play football for a few short years. I tell my sons to use football

and not let football use you.”Making a college decision is still

over a year away for Smith as he plans to attend a prep school fol-lowing his senior year at Traverse City Central.

Freeland seniors Jack Dreyer (25), Jaden DeBeau (6), Trey Morgan (26), Elijah Vlassis (22) and Aiden West (24) lead a Falcon team

looking to make a 12th consecutive trip to the playoffs.

Raiders Hope To Return To State Title GameJohn Raffel Sports Scene

Coach John Novara’s Portland Raiders were one win from a per-fect season last year.

They’ll tty it again, albeit it won’t be easy with the loss of some outstanding talent.

Portland finished with a 13-1 record and 5-0 mark in the Capital Area Activities Conference.

The Raiders lost the title game to Hudsonville Unity Christian 42-7. Portland was league, district and regional champs along with state runner-up.

Among the key graduates was Jacob Veale with 1,700 yards rushing and more than 30 touch-downs. Hunter Klein, an offensive lineman, is now at Siena Heights. Mitchell Mallek, a defensive back, is now at Adrian College.

Blake Meyers is a running back and returning all-league player. Cade Simon is a defensive line returner and all-league standout. Other returners are Gavin Mc-Gregor at running back-defensive back; David Svanda at wide receiv-er, Caso Frewentl at linebacker and Owen Russell at quarterback.

“We want to improve each week and be in a position to win a

league title,” Novara said.He said team strength is having

four of six returning skilled players.

But a major challenge, Novara acknowledged, is replacing eight players on defense and the entire offensive line.

Lansing Catholic, Sexton, Ionia, Eaton Rapids and Charlotte are the league opponents.

“It’s always a tough league,” Novara said.

The Raiders have had four 10-plus win seasons. They won the Division 5 state title in 2012.

Portland ended the 2018 season with a disappointing loss at Ford Field.

Martin Wants To Lead Bridgeport To ChampionshipJohn Raffel Sports Scene

Bridgeport’s Bobby Martin is ready for the type of season, which has his teammates and fans extremely excited.

The Bearcats were 4-5 last season, a year after qualifying for the playoffs for only the second time in school history.

Returning to the playoffs is definitely on their mind.

Martin will be a senior this year with his fourth year on the varsity.

Kevin Marshall Sr., Bridgeport’s coach, is excited to see what his senior linebacker will be able to do this season.

“He’s a true leader in the locker room as well on the field. A great person,” Marshall said. “He had over 100 total tackles with five sacks last year. He’s a God-fearing young man who has his head on his shoulders the right way for a young man. He has really worked

hard in the weight room this off-season.“He is a three-sport player so I have seen

great things in all from this young man. But on the football field is where he has shown the most exciting plays. (He is expected) to lead his team back to the playoffs with his teammates. Seven days a week he is in the weight room and on the field getting better. I love this young, very respectful and caring young man I know.”

Martin made honorable mention for Saginaw dream team last season. He was the team’s freshman of the year as a ninth grader.

“In my sophomore year, I was in the top 10 in tackles on the team,” he said.

As a freshman and sophomore, he was center and defensive tackle. This year, he’ll again be at linebacker and also an offensive left tackle. As a tackle, I have quick feet, so that means I can protect the quarterback blind side and I also have quick hands. It’s my first time playing left tackle. But the team

needs me there, so I don’t have a problem with it.”

As an inside linebacker, Martin is tough to stop.

“I’m a leader and I’ll be vocal,” he said. “I’ll make sure everybody knows their jobs. My strengths on defense are watching the plays, reading the keys, being vocal and getting to the ball as quick as possible.”

Defense is his forte.“Colleges are contacting me now but I’ll

worry about it later,” he said. “I want to be 100 percent for my team. We are state title contenders. We have good talent, we work hard and we have a chip on our shoulder that nobody respects us so we have to work hard for everything we want.”

Swan Valley and Freeland will be among the top team he expects to see.

Martin also plays basketball and baseball at Bridgeport.

Saginaw Nouvel Has A New Look As New Head Coach Steps InGreg Chrapek Sports Scene

The Saginaw Nouvel football team has a differ-ent look this year. Not only did the Panthers graduate some key players from last year’s team that compiled a 6-4 record, but a new head coach will roam the sidelines as veteran Nouvel coach Mike Boyd stepped down.

Andrew Weigl steps in as Nouvel’s new coach. A Nouvel alum, Weigl has served as the team’s defen-sive coordinator the past couple years.

While Nouvel suffered some key graduation losses, several veterans do return to provide the team a strong nucleus. Senior Harrison Dwan is a versatile player. Dwan can play quarterback or wide

receiver and is a corner-back on defense.

“We looking forward to the season,” Dwan said. “We are going to take it game by game and work hard every week. Obvious-ly, coach Boyd was a great coach. Coach Weigl brings a new perspective and he cares about the players like coach Boyd. He is a good fit for us.”

With some talented back and receivers to work with and a promising group of linemen on hand, the Nouvel offense has plenty of upside. Senior Sam Buckingham (6-5, 180) is a talented receiver who will also play linebacker on defense.

“We are really excited about the season,” Bucking-ham said. “We are putting together a real good line and I’m really excited about

our defense.”Anchoring the lines are

senior Kieran Schultz (6-4, 230) and junior Darron Chinery (6-2, 245). Big, strong and athletic, Schultz and Chinery will man the offensive tackle positions while provide a pair of im-pact bookends at defensive end.

Senior Zaiden Mitchell (5-10, 178) is a four-year, varsity player that will provide impact plays on both sides of the ball. A running back and receiver on offense, Mitchell totaled over 1,000 yards receiving and running. Bigger and quicker this year, Mitchell can play either cornerback or safety on defense.

“We’re very excited,” Mitchell said. “We have the kind of team that can go 8-1 or 9-0 this year.”

Saginaw Nouvel returns a number of key players including (left to right) Sam Buckingham (6), Kieran Schultz (63), Harrison Dwan (13),

Zaiden Mitchell (24) and Darron Chinery (77).

Bay City Western Football Team Poised For Rebound SeasonGreg Chrapek Sports Scene

Rebuilding is the name of the game for the Bay City Western football team. This year’s Western squad has a promising group of young players along with a number of players with varsity experience returning.

Junior quarterback Jack Fryzel is one of the promising young players poised to make an impact this season. Fryzel gained plenty of varsity experience as a sophomore last year and brings an improved skill set into the season.

Junior lineman Justin Doty is also a young veteran. A offensive and defensive lineman who was on the varsity as a freshman, missed last season due to an injury but it back healthy this season.

With over 60 players in the pro-gram, numbers are strong and the

Warriors are looking to improve.“Our senior class is not that

big, but the guys we do have are good athletes,” Fryzel said. “Our junior class is large and they like to compete. We were 1-8 last year but you should see a big improvement this year.”

Western has a large group of linemen on both sides of the ball that will provide the foundation up front as Western looks for its first winning season since 2012. West-ern turned in a 1-8 record last year with the lone win coming against Bay City Glenn.

“We’ve been getting a lot of guys to show up in the weight room,” Doty said. “We have a large group of linemen and they are all show-ing up in the weight room. We also have some really skilled guys. We have a lot of great receivers and defensive backs.” Bay City Western returns a large group of veterans this season

including Jack Fryzel (9) and Justin Doty (50).

Veteran Core To Lead The Way For Midland In Pursuit Of A League Title

Saginaw Valley Lutheran Poised For Improvement This Season

Greg Chrapek Sports Scene

Last fall saw the Midland football team experience plenty of success. This year, with several key players back, the Chemics are poised to build on that success.

Midland turned in a 9-4 overall record last year, reaching the Division 2 state semifinals where it fell to Muskegon Mona Shores. Midland also placed second in the conference to Mt. Pleasant.

Senior offensive lineman Sol-omon Thomas (6-4, 245) is one of the key players returning. The lone starter returning up front, Thomas is a skilled lineman to build around.

“I’m the only returner to the

offensive line,” Thomas said, “but I believe the guys we have this year will fill in pretty nice. I think we should be pretty good.”

Senior Tommy Johnstone (5-10, 165) is a returning wide receiver and defensive back. Johnstone brings skill and expe-rience to both sides of the ball.

“I think we look pretty good,” Johnstone said. “We’ve worked hard in the weight room and our work ethic looks pretty good.”

Midland also returns junior quarterback Alex Money. Mon-ey was pulled up to the varsity during the second week last season and helped the Chemics on their march to the state quarterfinals.

“We have a good core of guys returning,” Money said. “We

also have a lot of skill players returning. We should be pretty good this season.”

Senior Maxx Fisher is a ver-satile returnee who plays wide receiver and is the team’s punter and kicker.

“We’re young this year,” Fisher said. “We need some of the younger guys to step up and play like veterans. We also have a good mind set this year.”

Senior Brady Woods (6-2, 190) also returns. Woods is a versatile defensive back and wide receiver.

“We have a lot of receivers back and a lot of guys quick off the ball,” Woods said. “We are going to use that as a big advan-tage over our opponents.”

Greg Chrapek Sports Scene

Optimism surrounds the Saginaw Valley Lutheran foot-ball team this year. Coming off an impressive win in the final week of last season and with plenty of work put in during the offseason, the Chargers bring plenty of optimism into the new season.

“We are looking to be dras-tically improved,” said Valley Lutheran coach Joe Willey. “We know we are up against a great challenge, but the kids are working hard and are willing to learn.”

Valley Lutheran returns several players from last year that bring experience to the squad and have worked to im-

prove during the offseason. On offense, junior Eli Frank returns at quarterback. Junior running backs Scott Smith and Darius Ott spark the running game with senior Brett Billingsley back at the slot back position. Paving the way up front is an offensive line led by seniors Charlie Shaw (6-3, 280) and Jeremy Britton.

“We are a lot better looking already,” Britton said. “We are looking a lot better than last year. We’ve also had a lot of new kids show up.”

Valley Lutheran has a number of newcomers that are poised to step up. Senior Garrett Malmo brings a big target at tight end and will also line up at defensive end. Wide receiver Jared Gross

suffered a torn ACL last year but is back healthy this year. Juniors Davin Jahnke and Mike Weiss are a pair of linemen that will contribute along both the offen-sive and defensive lines.

“I think our overall team speed is pretty good,” Willey said. “Our guys are not big, but they are quick and fast. We are going to us that speed and elu-siveness to our advantage.”

The Chargers also bring a hungry attitude into the season.

“Our mentality will be a defi-nite strength,” said Frank. “I also think we will have a strong line.”

On the defensive side of the ball, Billingsley returns at strong safety. Britton anchors the line-backing corps along with Smith and Ott.

Saginaw Valley Lutheran returns a large core of veterans including (left to right) Eli Frank (2), Charlie Shaw (66), Jeremy Britton (68) and

Brett Billingsley (21).

Solomon Thomas (52) and Tommy Johnstone (3) are among some of the veterans returning for Midland.

Improved Leadership, Experience Has Corunna Poised For Strong Season

8-Player Football Teams Hope For More Success

Greg Chrapek Sports Scene

The Corunna football team went through some growing pains last season. This year, with a host of players returning, the lessons learned in a tough year will hope-fully pay dividends.

Not only does Corunna return a lot of experience, but they have plenty of talent as well. Junior wide

receiver/defensive lineman Nick Steinacker (6-7, 215) is a returning all-state player that is being recruit-ed by the University of Michigan.

Steinacker is one of seven start-ers returning on offense. Senior Peyton Norton is at quarterback with senior Nick Yarmuth and junior Scout Jones at running back. Gabe Baumchen and junior slot man Porter Zeeman join Steinack-er at receiver. The offensive line

includes seniors Mike Daniels, Alex Holmes (6-1, 280) and Alex Schwab (6-3, 230) and junior Jacob Lloyd (6-2, 225).

On defense, Steinacker is an anchor of the defensive line along with Daniels, Holmes, Lloyd and Schwab. Jones, Norton, Yarmuth and Zeeman are back at linebacker with Baumchen back in the defen-sive backfield.

Corunna also has a core of newcomers that will contribute. Seniors Ethan Ford (6-3, 260) and Matthew Weiss and junior Aidan Buckley will help out along the lines. Seniors Wyatt Crego, Tucker Woodruff and Fish-er Morris and junior Jeremiah Davis will see time at receiver on offense and the secondary or line-backer on defense.

A big plus for this year’s team is the leadership being displayed.

“This is the first year since 2016

where individuals have really stepped into a leadership role,” said Corunna coach Kyle Robinson. “Whether it is one of our five cap-tains or one of several players with their actions or words.”

This year’s squad also is developing an outstanding team chemistry.

“There is a genu-ine love and respect for each other,” Rob-inson said. “Both grades have and

continue to bond with each other regardless of status on the team.”

John Raffel Sports Scene

It was a memorable 8-player sea-son in 2018 for Morrice with a 13-0 record and 44-16 win over Pickford in the title game at Northern Michi-gan’s Superior Dome.

Morrice hopes to repeat this sea-son in Division I 8-man.

As he ended 2018 and got ready for 2019, Morrice coach Kendall Crockett knew it wouldn’t be easy.

“Going into (2018), you could tell the sense of urgency and how hard they worked and how diligent they were in the film room,” Crockett said. “We knew it would be a special sea-son. But you don’t know how special. Things went our way and we had a

great season.”As for next year, “we are losing 13

seniors that have played three years for us, 15 total seniors,” Crockett said. “The core of the team is leaving. We have some juniors ready to go.”

Portland St. Patrick lost 28-14 to Onekama in the Division 2 8-player semifinals and the Shamrocks could compete again.

“The offense continued to make plays, while special teams was again very solid for us,” coach Pat Russman said of the 2018 Shamrocks. “We have a great group of players who really enjoy the game and have a gift to play it.”

Mount Pleasant Sacred Heart also made the Division 2 playoffs.

Alma Football Team Set For Another Banner SeasonJohn Raffel Sports Scene

Alma would like to think one impressive football season deserves another.

It’s why coach Dan Falor has reason to be excited with a new season. The Panthers were 9-2 last season, which ended in a tough 14-13 district final loss to Escanaba.

“We’re happy with how we’ve done the last three years,” he said. “We talk about how we could have gotten the district title and keep moving forward. Overall, you can’t be unhappy with nine wins.”

It’s been a profitable summer for the Panthers.

“We’ve had a pretty good group of core

kids coming in and working out,’’ Falor said. The offensive line will be a strength for the

Panthers.“We return three starters, plus a couple of

guys coming up from the JVs,” Falor said.Key returners are senior receiver and

defensive back Case Martin, senior lineman and linebacker Ryan Calhoun, senior line-men Coleten Garrett and Logan Fitzgerald. Senior Tanner Vaga is an offensive guard and nose guard.

“We’ll be really young this year,” Falor said. “There’s a lot of open spots. The sched-ule is really tough. Our conference, with what was left of it, combined with the TVC East, we bring in Frankenmuth, Garber and Birch Run.”

The style of play, as usual, Falor said, will cater to his team’s personnel.

“We were pretty run heavy the past few years with Brec Alward,” Falor said. “We’ll have to see what gives us the best opportuni-ty to be successful.”

Martin is coming off a track season when he tied for second in the high jump at the state final, with an effort of 6 feet, 4 inches.

For football, he’s a starting wide receiver and defensive safety.

As a receiver, “I’m able to go up and high point the ball and jump,” he said.

Martin expects the offense to go half-and-half between running and passing. Whether he’s single- or double-teamed, Martin is con-fident in his abilities to get open. Defensively, he’s effective in “reading the routes and trying to jump them and pick them off.”

Martin’s focus during the offseason has been improving his ability to get more tack-les and being more of a leader.

Case Martin(10) hopes to be on the receiving end of a lot of passes for Alma

this season.

Morley Stanwood Back Aiming For Even More ProductionJohn Raffel Sports Scene

Morley Stanwood is expected to be a championship contender and among the reasons is running back Jason Bialik.

Bialik led the team in rushing last season with 157 carries and 1,136 yards for 10 touchdowns and was all-CSAA.

Bialik will again be a fullback

and tailback for Morley Stanwood. The summer sessions “are very

helpful,” he said. “You get four full days of practice (during the July 22-25 camp). The kids not here will be behind. We have some new faces. Our senior class has always been close. It should be a good year.”

Bialik will also be an outside linebacker for the Mohawks.

He’s coming off a strong track

season.“Jason is the No. 1 sprinter

on our team,” MS track coach Michelle Young said. “He anchors both sprint relays and was a crucial member of the 4x400relay this year. With three very fast sprinters in the league, Giovanni Weeks, Aaron Heron, and Addison Mitch-el, Jason held his own this year and improved his times in both the 100 and 200 from last season.”

But now, Bialik’s thoughts are on football

“With Kent City graduating most of their team, I believe the conference championship is up for grabs this season,” coach Clark Huntey said. “We have high ex-pectations for this football season. Our players and coaching staff now need to put in the work and focus to achieve those expectations.”

St. Charles Celebrating 20th Anniversary Of State Title TeamJohn Raffel Sports Scene

Quarterback Brett Schultz and slot receiver Joe Gonzales will play key roles in what St. Charles hopes will be a memorable football season this fall.

The Bulldogs were 1-8 last year and have only won four games the past three years. This is the 20th anniversary of the 1999 team that was 14-0 and state champs, and the Bulldogs hope to honor them with a banner season.

“We’re building,” an assistant coach for St. Charles said. “We have a lot of young guys com-ing back. We have some good prospects this year and we’re very excited about it. Our numbers are looking good. We look forward to the season.”

Schultz is a senior for St. Charles, who is expecting a turn-around.

“We’ll have some more experi-ence,” he said. “We need everyone to be healthy and eligible.”

Schultz indicated the offense will

focus on running. But Gonzales will contribute to a strong receiv-ing game.

Good hands and speed after he catches the ball are key features for Gonzales.

Gonzales missed most of last season with torn ligaments in his ankle. But he came back and and badly wants to have a good season.

“We have some talent returning and we have some kids who have never played football so I want to see what it will be like,” Gonzales said. “We have some potential.” Bret Schultz Joe Gonzales

Grand Ledge’s All-State Punter Excited With Senior Season ProspectsJohn Raffel Sports Scene

Connor Blake had an All-state season with Grand Ledge as a punter in 2018, and is eager to see what he can accomplish this year as a senior.

Besides punting, he’s also a fullback and defensive lineman.

This year, he’ll be a guard and also on the line.

Blake has been a punter for six years. His junior season was his best year. He averaged 41.9 yards per kick and didn’t have any blocked.

The key is “ball placement to the foot, how you drop it in

what angle,” Blake said. “I’m hoping to increase my average on the punt,”

He had seven punts inside the 20.

Blake starts both ways. As a blocker, quickness is a strength. On defense, he likes plugging holes.

Blake also went to camps during the summer to focus on all his roles.

“Our team is looking decent,” Blake said. “We’re pretty young.”

Blake also plays lacrosse but said football is probably his best sport.

Moore Set To Have Outstanding Year For O-E

Okemos Vying For CAAC Title

Ovid-Elsie Hopes To Challenge New Lothrop

John Raffel Sports Scene

Ovid-Elsie football coach Travis Long has good reason to be a big fan of second-year varsity player and senior Justin Moore.

“Only into week one of practice and Justin stands out amongst his teammates,” Long said. “He is a tremendous leader and has a work ethic like I have never seen before.

Justin should have a standout sea-son on both sides of the ball. He is a very physical blocker at tight end and a force on the outside rushing the pass at defensive end.”

The keys to Moore’s success has been “his team first attitude, his outstanding work ethic, his love for competition, and his drive to be the best,” Long said. “He has improved a lot since last year,

especially being a positive leader and teammate. He was such a great player for us last year, but I would say his leadership (has improved). Justin had outstanding games for us on the defensive side of the ball against Portland and Montrose, collecting a few sacks in each game.

“I expect Justin to be one of our leaders statistically on both sides

of the ball. Justin is a three-sport athlete which takes a lot of his time, but he was in the weight room when he could be and had a great summer for us at our workouts. He is a gym rat, so even after workouts you can find him working on his other sports like basketball.”

Moore also plays basketball and baseball for Ovid-Elsie.

Okemos was 7-4 last season and third in the Capital Area Activities Conference. But the Chieftains are looking for much more this year/

Coach Mike Krumm has turned 50 but is eager to have much success in his second season at Okemos.

Krumm is a 1986 Okemos High School All-State running back, and played 1987 at Albion College. He started every game as freshmen fullback and tight end. He started in the Green and White game

but was declared ineligible due to transfer rule prior to the first game.

He’s in his second season as head coach. The team was 7-4 last season.

Top returners are seniors Spencer Ladue (OL/LB),  Grant Holtzer (WR/FS), Mason Erby (OL/DL), Rovic Ines, Jacob Precise (OL)  Matthew McAlvey (WR/DB) and Joe Trevino (DL), juniors Con-ner Richardson (RB/DB) Connor Nugent (LB) and Jamari Littlejohn TE/LB. Top newcomers are juniors Liam Carr (QB/DB) and Jack Campbell OL/DL.

Top sophomores are  Jerimiah

Salem, QB, Chais Williams RB/DB and Jordon Clerkley, WR/DB,

Grant Holtzer has been offered by Michigan Tech and Hillsdale in Division 2 and Hope, Alma and Chicago University in Division 3.

Spencer Ladue has been offered by Hope and Albion.

Returning starters on offense are Mason Erby (OL), Grant Holtzer (WR) and Jamari Littlejohn (TE).

Returners on defense are Grant Holtzer (DB), Spencer Ladue (LB), Conner Richardson (DB), Connor Nugent (LB), Jamari Littlejohn (LB) and Joe Trevino DL,  “Oke-mos will be looking to reload after losing six players that have gone on to play college football off of last years playoff team including

D1 EMU player Brock Jordan,” Krumm said. “Okemos will rely on a mix of veteran players and some very talented underclass men to make a run for a conference cham-pionship. While Okemos has lost some size off its offensive line, the program has seen an influx of new personnel as 16 players have joined the football program in grades 10-12 for the first time.

“Strengths will be a defense that returns six starters and overall excellent team speed on offense. “

Keys to a successful season are “getting off to a fast start with four games at home in a row,” Krumm said. “The development of the young players and the seniors leading this team will be critical

to our success. We will have eight seniors playing football this year that either never played or played briefly in the youth program.  We have another seven sophomores and one junior that are playing for the first time ever.”

John Raffel Sports Scene

It’s not easy competing for a conference title when defending state champion New Lothrop is in the same league.

The Ovid-Elsie Marauders will still going after an MMAC title

Coach Travis Long’s team was 6-4 last season and 6-1 in the league. But O-E, which quali-fied for the playoffs in week 8 vs. Durand, hope to be even better this season.

The Marauders graduated some

outstanding people. Evan Morris was a four-year varsity kicker/punter is kicking for MSU this year. Bryce Dolan (RB/DB) was the leader on the defense. Jacob Loynes “is a heady quarterback who was also a great example to his teammates,” Long said. All-league players gone are Liam Thompson, a linebacker and “great kid to coach,” while Jacob Darling is and all league offensive lineman and a tough competitor and Zach Rambo is an all-league lineman.

Justin Moore a senior tight end and defensive end, “should be a force on both sides of the ball,”

Long said. He also added com-ments on the following players.

Shayne Loynes, a senior RB/DB “should be a standout back for us, used in a variety of ways.”

Colton Sutliff, a senior LB, “is our leader on defense, the guy who keeps us going.”

Cooper Beard, a senior running back, “is a big back who should earn lots of yards and will be tough to bring down.”

Cayden Flynn, a senior OL “will be our leader in the trenches.”

Luis Johnson a senior OL, “moved to guard from TE, will help us up front.”

Joe Fabus, a senior OL, “is a sur-prise standout in summer camps, very physical.”

Kam Arnettl, a junior OL, “should be one of our best lineman this year.”

Kyren Henning a senior TE/DB “quietly goes about his business and gets the job done.”

Zach Miller 12th DL “is not very big, but very quick and loves to stick his nose in the action.”

“We will be very competitive as long as we stay healthy,” Long said. “We expect to challenge for the

league title like we do every year. Senior leadership is our best team’s strength. Individually our speed in the backfield is good and our size up front on offense. We need to be more physical at the point of attack.”

As for MMAC, “Our conference is very strong with New Lothrop and Montrose being the league fa-vorites,” Long said. “Ovid-Elsie will challenge for top of the league.”

Eston Miles Leads Williamston Attack

Legendary Reed City Coach Takes Over At Belding

John Raffel Sports Scene

Williamston football coach Steve Kersten is looking foward to Eston Miles’ senior season, and for good reason.

“Eston had a dominating season in 2018 and his recruiting got hot in the winter and spring,” Kersten said. “He had multiple Division 1 offers from most of the MAC, and Rutgers offered him as well. He committed to play at Western Michigan.”

It’s his third varsity season. In 2018, Miles had 74 tackles and eight tackles for loss as a D-Lineman.

“Eston is 6-3, 300 pounds with quickness, agility and a motor that never stops. He can stuff the middle and chase down a play on the perimeter. He is very aggressive and physical which makes him hard to block,” Kersten said. “His confidence is through the roof af-ter playing in 13 games last season and spending the entire season on the re-cruiting and elite camp circuit. He will not be intimidated and his technique has improved and his toolbox is full of pass rush moves. He will be a force this season on the defensive line.”

Watching Miles is a treat, as far as Kersten is concerned.

“It’s quite a sight to see a 6-3, 300-pound dude chasing down a running back on a sweep,” Kersten said.

“We went 10-3 last season and we are looking to have another outstanding season.”

Williamston won the league title last year and has one returning starter on offense and three on defense. Slotback Sage Lin is back on offense and Miles, linebacker Jacob Jones and defensive back Sullivan Sparks also return.

Other key contributors on offense are expected to be Mason Allman (RB), Luke Mahaney (QB), Jaeger Woelmer (OL), Nate Holcomb (OL) and Preston Carpenter (OL).

Other key players on defense are Jake Dietz (OLB), Tyler McManaman (DE), Anthony Riess (DL), Gabe Lounsbury (CB), Caden Plaxton (CB), Cade Con-ley (DE), Zach Painter (LB), Avery Lott (LB) and Jacob Dunckel (FS).

“Our young defense is progressing quickly and our offensive players have been fast learners,” Kersten said. “Our kicker, Caden Plaxton, is experienced and will score for us. We are young and we must be resilient and win close games. Consistency will be critical be-cause of our youth. We are deep at QB, but they have not had varsity game reps.

“Seniors Gabe Lounsbury, Tyler McManaman, Mason Allman, and Anthony Riess did not play a lot of downs last year but it was because they were second on the depth chart behind outstanding players.”

Belding was a dominant power in the 1990s with two state football title, two state runners-up and a six-season stretch where the team lost just one regular-season game.

It was the Irv Sigler era and while Belding has had some outstanding teams since then, it hasn’t quite reached state title contention.

Monty Price comes in as coach who will bring back Sigler’s famed Wing T. While Price can’t guarantee success as it was in the 1990s, there’s

hopes the Black Knights could flirt with such again.

His Reed City teams won eight straight CSAA Gold titles and three straight district crowns. He had a record of 147-64. Reed City made the playoffs 15 times during Price’s stint which was preceded with an appearance at Montabella.

“They have a good group of kids coming back and I think the community is optimistic with the potential of that team,” Price said. “Obviously there’s still work to be done and we’ll address those issues and hope-fully build a championship program.”

Belding plays in the OK Silver.

“There’s some great football programs in the OK Silver,” Price said. “You have Hopkins and Wyoming Kelloggsville and Godwin Heights. It’s tough to win anywhere. I’m sure it will be very competitive.”

Belding lineman Jon Ross likes what he sees.

“Everyone I talked to on the team loves coach Price,” Ross said. “He’s a very likable person but he’s making us work very hard. I think people still like him and that’s good.”

Williamston (green uniforms) lost in the state semifinals last season.

New Lothrop Quarterback Takes Charge Again For Defending State ChampsJohn Raffel Sports Scene

When New Lothrop All-State senior quarterback Avery Moore was celebrating the Division 7 state title with his teammates last season, Hornet fans had two reasons to be upbeat:

1-The Hornets just won a state title.2-Moore is back for his senior season in

2019.Coach Clint Galvas is ecstatic over

having Moore returning for another season. It will be his third year as varsity starting quarterback.

“I was a drastic change for him,” Galvas said. “For his sophomore year he was young, but he did a nice job orchestrating our offense. The big thing coming into his junior year, he filled that leadership role as well. He was one of our team captains as a junior. That was huge. Towards the middle of last year and moving into the playoffs, he was just another coach on the field. He sees the game extremely well.

“We do a lot of reads. About 75 to

80 percent of our offense he has to read something. He almost always makes the correct read. His football IQ is extremely high. His improvement from sophomore to junior years is tremendous. He’s a big kid and probably has one of the strongest arms we’ve seen from a high school quarterback. It’s incredible. His size and arm strength make him tough to defense. He’s one if the best dual strength quarterbacks in the state.”

Moore has handled the spread option stuff New Lothrop throws at the opposing defenses rather well.

He rushed for 26 touchdowns and aver-aged more than 9.0 yards per carry. Galvas indicated Moore also can pitch the ball to outstanding running backs which will put even more pressure on the defense.

“He threw for over 1,700 yards and 20 touchdowns,” Galvas said.

Moore is also free safety.“He literally is as good on defense as he is

on offense,” Galvas said.Moore has committed to Grand Valley

State University for football.

New Lothrop Poised To Shoot For Another State TitleJohn Raffel Sports Scene

It was a dramatic season for Clint Galvas and his New Lothrop Hornets on their way to the Divi-sion 7 state championship with a 50-44 win over Madison Heights.

Some fine players return for the Hornets although, like always, there’s a few they’ll be missing from graduation.

“Aidan Harrison was a tremen-dous athlete and leader for our team,” Galvas said. “He was tough as nails as he played the last half of the season with a torn labrum and the final three games of the year with a broken hand. He is currently

playing for the Missouri Tigers in the SEC.

“We also lost four tremendous offensive and defensive lineman who were the anchor of our team. All State offensive lineman Jayson Tunstall, All State defensive tackle Allen Jamick, along with Garrett Birchmeier and Chandler Saunders were all huge contributors and a major factor in us claiming the Division 7 state title last season.”

But the cupboard isn’t bare by any means.

“All-State senior quarterback Avery Moore will be returning for this third year as our starting quarterback,” Galvas works. “I

believe he is one of the best dual threat quarterbacks in the entire state and will be looked upon to lead this team. He has committed to play college football at Grand Valley State next fall. Julius Garza (RB/LB) and Will Muron (RB/DB) are both returning as juniors, but were huge for us last year and will once again be called upon to be playmakers on both sides of the ball as they were a season ago.

“Both wide receivers return for their senior year, Jacob Graves and Dylan Shaydik. Both are returning as defensive backs as well and will both play a huge part on both sides of the ball. Defensively we will also have Austin Barnette returning as our strong safety as well as our outside linebacker Trevor Bishop. They will both spearhead our de-fense. Colby Hemgesberg and Zach Savage both return for their senior year and both seen a lot of time on the offensive defensive line a year

ago and will be called on again.”Not surprisingly, plenty is ex-

pected from the Hornets.“Expectations are high once

again this season,” Galvas said. “We expect to compete for another league title as well as compete for the state title. We have a lot of experience, speed, and athleticism on both sides of the ball. Both our offensive and defensive lines will be young and must progress on a weekly bases for us to reach our goals.”

The first goal will be to win the Mid Michigan Activities Confer-ence.

“I believe our league is strong throughout with many teams improved as well as many whom return a lot of talent,” Galvas said. “Montrose, Ovid Elsie, and Byron should all compete for the league title along with us.”

New Lothrop hopes to be at Ford Field again, celebrating another state title.

P-W Looking At Jacob Pung For Key Leadership

P-W Lineman Encouraged With Team’s Prospects

John Raffel Sports Scene

Jacob Pung is among the reason Pewamo-Westphalia will be considered contenders for both the CMAC crown and state honors this season.

Pung is a center and linebacker,“Highlights I remember from the 2018

football season include, but are not lim-ited to, the shutout against Ithaca Yellow Jackets, and win over the Williamston Hornets,” Pung said. “These wins not only helped to provide a basis on the strength and ability of our team, but helped us to grow together and form a kinship that would help us to perform at the best of our abilities.”

Key athletes that graduated this past year include Cameron Wirth, Alec Thel-en and Noah Spitzley.

“My remembrances with these players as a group were those of encouragement as we fought through the struggles of conditioning camp, cheering and yelling, helping everyone finish as quickly as pos-sible to help get our team ready for the

season,” Pung said. “Individ-ually, I see Noah Spitzley

as a key athlete due to his contributions on the O-line, and the amount of knowl-edge he passed to me about playing on the O-Line.

“Cameron Wirth was seen as a key athlete due to his speed and agility while carrying the ball, but what made him special was his ability to build team-mates up when they were feeling down about a bad play, and his ability to bring people together and to form a bond that helped each other play to the best of their abilities. This is likewise of Alec Thelen, helping to grow a bond between players while still managing the break records for kicking and fill any spot we needed him, making him a key athlete to have graduated from our team.”

Players who will be key athletes this year include senior John Martin (D-End/Tackle), senior Carter Thelen (RB/LB), senior Grant Stump (WR/LB), and sophomore Tanner Wirth (RB/S). “My expectations for each of these athletes are helping to bring the team together as one, and form a bond that will help everyone be able to trust one another in

their respective positions,” Pung said. “Each person excels at the spot they are put in, so expectations are not only high for these people, but aimed towards record breaking performances.

“Expectations I have for the team this season are firstly winning the conference, and then winning districts, regionals and then semis and then finally a state title. After the loss last year to NewLothrop, we are aiming to come up stronger and faster than ever, and our ultimate goal is to come out on top.”

Bonding is a key for Pung’s team.“Our team’s strength will be not only

the bond of everyone, but the amount of strength this team has to put forward from year long work in the weight room,” he said. “Our program dedicates itself to outworking everyone around us, and pushes us to be better which helps us immensely. This team needs to work on energy and enthusiasm throughout prac-tice, as there are points where we get lazy and stop trying and it is unacceptable.”

Pung likes his team’s chances to do well in the CMAC.

“Our conference is a decently strong, and usually competitive conference, with many teams hunting to take us down,” Pung said. “I would consider PW to be the league favorites this year again. I see us winning the league.”

John Raffel Sports Scene

John Martin is among Pewa-mo-Westphalia’s key players and can’t to see the 2019 Pirates on the field.

Martin, a defensive end and offensive tackle was a key player last year when P-W was 11-1 and lost in the third round of the playoffs at New Lothrop.

One of Martin’s teammates is Jacob Pung, for whom he has plenty of respect.

“I also expect Jacob to play and read fast,” Martin said. “I also expect him to work his hardest on both sides of the ball.”

As for the Pirates, “my expecta-tions for the team this season are to

be hard-working and determined,” Martin said. “They should be doing their best and to be as ambitious as possible for the team and their team-mates they’ll be playing alongside. I expect them to take the season one game at a time and hopefully ending first in our conference and continu-ing to improve.

“Our team’s strength will have to be our defense. We have an excellent coach staff that helps on both sides of the ball and over the past few years our defense has been very strong. I feel this year will be no different as we have a lot of returning players who have the experience needed to be great. Our team needs to work on using the best of their God-giv-en abilities. We need to try to not

underestimate any opponent that we face. We also should try to take any criticism or comments as positive feedback and not negative. Lastly, everyone should try to play as a team rather than an individual.”

P-W might be a state contender but winning the conference is first on the list.

“Every year you start out with a slightly new team; new starters, new players, maybe even new coaching staff,” Martin said. “So it would be wrong of me to assume anything of our conference. However, I see our team standing out as the team to beat, as we have been successful in the last few years.”

Young Carrollton Squad Looking For Improvement This SeasonGreg Chrapek Sports Scene

A young team last season, the Carrollton football team had its share of growing pains as it turned in a 1-8 overall record. The Cavaliers are again on the young side this year, but plenty of work put in during the offseason has the squad looking for improvement.

“We are going to be young again,” said Carrollton coach Nate Wotta. “We are a ju-nior-heavy team. We have a core group of guys who have put in the work during the summer and I feel that we will be competitive. The league is going to be extremely difficult again so we will have to adjust and go forward.”

Carrollton is building around a core group of juniors that come in with a year of experience on their resume. Caleb James is back at wide receiver and defensive back with Santana Meredith return-ing along the offensive and

defensive line. Junior middle linebacker Brice Williams also returns.

At quarterback, juniors Ty Jarvis and Landon Boensch give the Cavaliers options. Junior running back Darius Thomas also returns with sophomore DJ Voltz back at wide receiver.

“I think we have a good, core group of guys that are smart and work hard,” Wotta said. “They will keep improv-ing as they continue to grow and mature. If we can find some early success that will help propel us going forward.”

Offensively, Carrollton will look to lean on the ground game and mix in some passes.

“Our focus is on running the ball,” Wotta said. “Running the ball is a staple for us and we will continue to base our offense on that. We want be physical and control the line of scrimmage and hopefully that will open up our passing game.”

Carrollton is led by a talented core of players that includes (left to right) Alexander Rittmaier (80), Landon Boensch (12), Caleb James (7),

Ty Jarvis (10), Bryce Williams (44) and Santana Meredith (65).

New Chippewa Hills Coach Eyes League TitleJohn Raffel Sports Scene

Many head high school football coaches are on their district’s teaching staffs.

But some aren’t.AJ Webley is Chippewa Hills’ new

coach and is a student and coach at the same time.

He replaced longtime CH coach Larry Jose who resigned at the end of last season.

It’s his second year on the staff. He was an assistant last year.

“Before I was not coaching and came back from the Marine Corps after 16 years of service,” Webley said. “I did coaching at different locations.”

“I came in, and always had a passion for the game and had a long conversation with coach Jose,” Webley said. “Larry, I knew was getting close, but I wasn’t expecting him to leave so rapidly.

Chippewa Hills was 5-5 last year and lost to Freeland in the playoffs.

Webley said he’s currently a student at Ferris studying to be a high school math teacher.

“We have placed a big emphasis on being consistent from play to play,” he said. “Our players need to play within the system and trust that their teammates will do their jobs. We need our under-classmen to learn their positions to fill the open spots that we have.

“Each week the kids need to be prepared to play. One of our team goals every year is to win the conference.”
