Introduction The Voices United Concordance provides for the text of Voices United the same help that a Bible concordance gives for the text of the Bible. It allows the user to locate a hymn, or specific verse of a hymn, from a single word in the hymn. It can be used as a thematic index, listing all the hymns containing a specific word. It is also a valuable research tool for hymnology, allowing word and text analysis to be performed. The Concordance lists each of the over 5500 headwords found in Voices United, each headword followed by each unique line of each verse of each hymn in which that headword appears, a total of almost 50000 entries. Headwords are all the words appearing in the English language hymns of Voices United, with the exception of the most common words (e.g. “a”, “the”, common prepositions, variants of the verb “to be” etc.). The detail entries contain the line of the hymn containing the headword, the hymn number and the verse number. An example entry is as follows: COMMIT.............5 into your hands, Lord, I commit my spirit. 346 vs. 5 and then, into your hands commit my spirit. 493 vs. 3 we to your guardian care commit, 529 vs. 2 your friends in Christ commit you now. 558 vs. 3 Now to our hearts your joy commit, 614 vs. 4 There are five entries for the headword “COMMIT”. Each of the five shows the full text of the line in which the word “commit” occurs, the hymn number and the verse. Duplicate entries have been removed to conserve space. Sometimes a hymn has the same line repeated in a verse (e.g. “Lord, listen to your children praying” VU 400). Sometimes the same headword occurs multiple times in a line, potentially generating duplicate entries (e.g. “Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty” VU 315). These duplicates have been removed. I produced this concordance as a resource for a thesis I am planning in the area of hymnology. Recognizing that it has potential value for other researchers, for worship planners and for any serious user of Voices United, I decided to make it more generally available. I would appreciate any feedback related to its utility, and any suggestions for its improvement. Comments can be directed to me at [email protected]. Acknowledgements I dedicate this book first of all to Voices United Managing Editor John Ambrose, and all those who contributed time, talent and energy to making Voices United the wonderful worship resource that it is. I also wish to acknowledge those teachers who have opened to me the wonderful world of hymnology: Bruce Harding, Paul Richardson, and especially Fred Graham.
