Does The Drought Mean Increased Fire Danger for the Inland Empire

I am not a water hog, but I admit I’m careless when it comes to water usage. The utility bills reviewer of our household constantly reminds me that I shouldn’t allow the water to

run so long while I brush my teeth. I shouldn’t keep the shower water running as I wait for the perfect bathing temperature…which in my case is hot, very hot. And I should plug-up the sinks on the very few occasions when I wash the dishes instead of allowing a steady stream to run over them and down the drain. In my household the utility bills reviewer is also the Zen-master of dishwashing. Last year was the driest calendar year in the over 119 years of California rainfall records. And recent conversations and news about California’s current drought conditions have made me consider my own careless behavior and how I must do a better job at conservation of probably our most important natural resource. So when Governor Brown declared a drought emergency and asked all of us Golden State citizens to reduce our water usage by 20%, I had to ask myself if I was really prepared to change my behavior. I know I have to be more careful when it comes to my water wastefulness and stop complaining to my friends when there is any hint of clouds or threat of rain…”It’s much needed,” they remind me. And I have to heed the Zen-master’s advice…or at least pretend I’m listening. I’ve always been fascinated by the story of the water wars in Southern California – particularly the story of the Los Angeles Aqueduct (which, by the way celebrated its centennial last November) and the stealing of the Owens Valley water rights. Yes, at the time of its completion the aqueduct was the longest and the largest single water project in the world. It was responsible for the explosive growth of the City of Angels, however it completely decimated and destroyed a growing community of farmers, ranchers, and other residents in the process. That story always reminds me of just how important water is to growing and sustaining a community. Last week I met with Victor Griego one of the founders of a water education conference for elected leaders that is held annually in California. The conference offers participants basic information on water policy, with sessions on California water history, infrastructure and finance. This week there is news that President Obama will be visiting Fresno during a trip to Southern California to better educate himself on our drought-ravaged farming communities. He is expected to discuss the federal government’s role in helping us deal with the growing crisis. Meeting with Victor helped me realize that we all need to be educated about water…where our water comes from, what public infrastructure is needed to maintain a clean and safe supply, and how we can all do our small part through conservation and being less careless with our daily usage. My education will start with Victor’s WELL Conference next month. We’ll have a chance to visit our Delta, the series of rivers, canals, and irrigation system that is responsible for delivering billions of gallons of water from the water rich north to millions of acres of farmland in the Central Valley and tens of millions of homes in southern California. For conservation tips and more information on what you need to know and do to be more water-wise, I encourage you to visit the Western Municipal Water District’s website at wmwd.com.

San Bernardino

C ommunity Hospital of San Bernardino and St. Bernardine Medical Center recently recognized 17 local nonprofit organizations

for their efforts to improve the health and quality of life in the Inland Empire. The awards ceremony was held at the Rezek Centre on St. Bernardine’s campus, located at 2101 N. Waterman Avenue in San Bernardino. Through Dignity Health’s Community Grants Program, the hospitals awarded a total of $263,741 in grant funding to the following nonprofit organizations in support of their work to improve access to health care, chronic disease education and youth development. Through the generous contributions from each of Dignity Health’s 40 hospitals, including Community Hospital and St. Bernardine, in 2013, Dignity Health was able to fund more than $6 million in grant awards to nonprofit organizations in California, Arizona and Nevada. “Dignity Health’s Community Grants Program reflects our strong commitment to serve our community, not only as health care providers, but also as a partner to those who work to better the lives of others,” said Linda McDonald, Dignity Health Inland Empire vice president of Mission Services. “This year, Community Hospital of San Bernardino and St. Bernardine Medical Center are pleased to offer more than $263,000 to worthy organizations that provide important services such as youth development programs and resources that improve access to health and dental care for the underserved.” Since the Community Grants Program began in 1990, Dignity Health has encouraged hospitals to expand their health care mission beyond the hospital campus. The 2013 Community Grants cycle marks the 23rd year of this program. Since 1990, Dignity Health has awarded $51 in grants in the tri-state area. To be selected for a grant, an organization or program must meet one or more of the following criteria: address the greatest health needs of the community; emphasize prevention to address the underlying cause of health problems; contribute to a seamless continuum of care; build upon

T he University of California, Irvine Honors to Honors Program, established in 2010, recently decided to offer the Regents

Scholarship, which usually covers tuition for eligible students in the Riverside City College Honors Program. RCC is one of 14 community colleges in the state to be selected by UCI to participate in the well-regarded program. “This is a huge opportunity for our students to pursue their higher education without going into debt,” said RCC Associate Professor and Honors Coordinator Thatcher Carter, PhD. “The Honors to Honors Program at UCI will make sure that our honors students continue to push themselves and take challenging classes. It’s definitely one more reason for our students to consider going to UCI.” The UCI Honors to Honors Program guarantees students early registration and admission and provides them with an honors curriculum consisting of interdisciplinary classes, close interaction with peers, mentorship by UCI’s top faculty, and opportunities to participate in undergraduate research. The program also offers students assistance in applying for scholarships, internships, graduate/professional schools, education abroad, and work experience. “Riverside City College was added this year as we became aware of the excellence of its honors program. Their inclusion reflects our interest in attracting the very best students from throughout Southern California,” said Dale Leaman, a UCI representative from the Office of Admissions and Relations with Schools. To qualify, students must take five honors classes, maintain a 3.7 GPA, and be nominated by the RCC honors program director. Upon transfer to the UCI Honors to Honors Program, RCC students automatically become Regent Scholars. In addition to the UCI Honors to Honors partnership, the RCC honors program is also affiliated with UCLA Transfer Alliance Program (TAP), which provides priority admission for qualified honors students. The RCC honors program focuses on teaching students to work intellectually in an environment that encourages critical thinking, written and verbal communication skills, and cultivates awareness and understanding of the diverse environment. T he Riverside Municipal Airport is working with the National Adopt-A-Watt® Program (NAAWP) to retrofit about 20 parking lot lights

with new, energy efficient, induction fluorescent lighting systems. These lights will reduce electricity consumption by 60% while reducing the Airport’s operating costs and carbon foot print. The lights, which have an estimated lifespan of 100,000 hours, will be installed at no cost to the Airport through a sponsorship agreement with NAAWP. The sponsorship program will, in subsequent years, support other energy efficiency projects at the Airport, such as supplementing the purchase price of electric vehicles and installation of charging stations to further help reduce CO2 emissions. “Riverside Municipal Airport aims to provide the best service in the most cost-efficient manner, and this new lighting will help us do that,” said Airport Director Mark Ripley. “We look forward to our agreement with NAAWP providing even more energy efficiency benefits in the future.” Modeled after the successful Adopt-a Highway program, the Adopt-A-Watt® Program provides a business-based funding method to facilitate America’s transition to clean energy and energy efficiency. T he recent e l e c t i o n s brought a tidal

wave of changes to San Bernardino City Hall with the election of Carey Davis as Mayor, Virginia Marquez, re-election to the 1st Ward City Council, Benito

Barrios in the 2nd Ward, Fred Shorett in the 4th Ward, Henry Nickels in the 5th Ward, and Jim Mulvihill in the 7th Ward. They will join John Valdivia in the 3rd Ward and Rikke Van Johnson in the 6th Ward. Valdivia was able to beat a recall attempt to remove him from office but his days are numbered unless he changes his ways. Also elected was a new city attorney, Gary Saenz in November. He took over from a recalled Jim Penman who had held the position for over 25 years. The Biggest Winners are the citizens of the city of San Bernardino who voted and sent a signal to the region and developers that says we are open for business. They were also telegraphing to the bankruptcy judge we are serious about getting our financial matters under control by electing someone who knows how to read, interpret, and analyze a financial sheet and budget. Some of the other individuals who are winners even though they did not do it for personal attention are: Scott Beard head of the recall committee; Jim Smith and Roxanne Williams of Save San Bernardino; Barbara Babcock, the ultimate

San Bernardino Is The Biggest Winnercheerleader; and Mayor Pat Morris and wife Sally who steered the ship with dignity during a turbulent political storm. Also winners are the Black and Latino communities: from the leadership of Virginia Marquez and Rikke Van Johnson who both supported Carey Davis with fund raising to the help of Assembly Member Cheryl Brown, and mayors Deborah Robertson of Rialto and Acquanetta Warren of Fontana. And I cannot leave out the NAACP, WAG, Young Visionaries, YAP, ICUC, and others who hosted a standing room only candidate’s forum at Ecclesia Church. The Biggest Losers, which is what happened to the ones who lost the election, were Wendy McCammack who was recalled from her council seat of 12 years then lost in her bid for mayor. Former City Attorney Jim Penman who held the office for over 25 years and was recalled from office last November. Chas Kelley, who resigned from office due to several felony counts of perjury for not reporting using campaign donations for personal use and filing false reports, can never hold public office again. And Robert Jenkins who was recalled from his 2nd Ward Council seat and is still facing federal charges of Internet stalking and ID theft. Other non-elected big losers are the Fire Fighters Association and Police Officers Association. These two associations poured thousands of dollars into the campaigns of city council and city attorney races to secure votes that would benefit their members to the detriment of the taxpaying public. To my surprise another big loser is Laurie Stalnaker, secretary of the Riverside and San Bernardino AFL/CIO, a strong supporter of Wendy McCammack. This labor organization has lost its

influence over the years under her leadership. I saw evidence of that when the Riverside Branch of the NAACP wanted to recognize labor and some of its members, but could not hold the event in Riverside because no hotel is unionized in the entire county. Thus they had to come to the city of San Bernardino at the Hilton to hold the event and honor Black labor members. This is a direct reflection of her failed leadership to lead this fine organization of hard working citizens. Another loser in November was Judi Penman from the San Bernardino City Unified School Board. Judi’s husband is Jim Penman. The citizens must now prepare to win another battle by reforming the city charter and throwing out Section 186, which has the compensation package of the fire fighters and police on automatic pilot. Some other changes must be made to ensure our government functions as a modern government of the people by the people and for the people and not a select group of employees and officials.

percent of White students and 43 percent of Asian students. Black children are at great risk of being funneled into the prison pipeline. A Black boy born in 2001 has a 1 in 3 chance of going to prison in his lifetime. The schools are a major feeder system into the juvenile and criminal justice systems. Black students made up only 18 percent of students in public schools in 2009-2010 but were 40 percent of students who received one or more out-of-school suspensions. A Black public school student is suspended every 4 seconds of the school day. A Black child is arrested every 68 seconds. Black children and youth make up 32 percent of children arrested and 40 percent of all children and youth in residential placement in the juvenile justice system. Black children are overrepresented in abuse and neglect cases and in foster care. Gun violence is the leading cause of death among Black children ages 1-19 although there is no hiding place for any of us from pervasive gun violence in America. Each day, three Black children or teens are killed by guns. Black children and teens are nearly five times more likely to die from gun violence than White children and teens. The number of Black children and teens killed by guns between 1963 and 2010 is 17 times greater than the recorded lynchings of Black people of all ages between 1882 and 1968. Where is our equivalent anti-lynching movement today to give our children a chance to grow up safely? I hope this Black History Month is not just about our history but about our obligation to protect our children and move our nation forward in our multiracial world. I hope it is a call to action to the Black community and every community to build the long overdue movement to stop the backwards slide of children of color on our watch and end the disgrace of letting children be the poorest group in the world’s richest economy. If America does not begin to get it—that our future is entwined with our children’s futures—we’re going to miss the boat to the future.

Defense Fund

“The world does not want and will never have the heroes and heroines of the past. What this age needs is an enlightened youth not to undertake the tasks like theirs but to imbibe the spirit of these great men and answer the present call of duty…” --Carter G. Woodson

C arter G. Woodson, son of former slaves, pioneering Harvard-trained historian, founder of the Association for the Study of African

American Life and History, and inspirer of Black History Month, sought to teach future generations of Black children about the great thinkers and role models who came before us. He was very clear that celebrating our rich Black history of struggle and courage was not the same as getting stuck in the past, but if we are going to understand the present and protect the future we must understand where we came from and what it took to get us here. Black History Month is not just for Black Americans. It is for all Americans as we are at the tipping point of a country where the majority of our children are non-White. Black history is American history. We can all be inspired by the progress made but clear about the progress that still remains to be made if we are going to move forward. We should use the extraordinary leaders from our history as examples to help us with the critical task of preparing this generation of children to be the new leaders our community and nation need right now. The Children’s Defense Fund’s recent report on The State of America’s Children 2014 shows children of color are already a majority of all children under 2 and in five years children of color will be the majority of all children in America. All of our children—including all of our Black children—truly must be ready in critical mass to take their place among the workers, educators, members of the military, and political leaders of tomorrow. America is going to be left behind if our children are not enabled to get ahead and prepared, in Dr. Woodson’s words, to “answer the present call of duty.” Yet CDF found the state of Black children in America today is grim. Black children are sliding backwards on our watch and the Black community needs to wake up and the country needs to wake up and do something about it with urgency and persistence. Black children are more than three times as likely to be poor as White children. A Black baby is born into poverty every two-and-a-half minutes. Over 4 million Black children (40 percent) were poor in 2012, compared to 5.2 million

A Continuing Portrait of Inequality: The Black Child in Today’s AmericaWhite children (14 percent). Twenty-five percent of poor children are Black although Black children are only 14 percent of the child population. In six states—Kentucky, Michigan, Mississippi, Ohio, Oregon, and Wisconsin—half or more Black children are poor, and nearly half the states have Black child poverty rates of 40 percent of more. Just under 40 percent of Black children live with two parents, compared to 65 percent of White children and 85 percent of Asian children. Each day, 1,153 Black babies are born to unmarried mothers and 199 to teen mothers. Although the percent of children born to unmarried mothers has increased for both Black and White children, nearly 3 in 4 Black babies are born to unmarried mothers compared to less than 1 in 4 White babies. Black children living with single mothers are three-and-a-half times as likely to be poor as Black children living with married parents. Black children suffer worse health outcomes. Black babies are more than twice as likely as White babies to die before their first birthdays and Black children are twice as likely to die before their 18th birthdays as White children. Black babies are more likely to die before their first birthdays than babies in 72 other countries, including Sri Lanka, Cuba, and Romania. Although 95 percent of all children are now eligible for health coverage, Black children are 40 percent more likely to be uninsured than White children and over 1 million Black children (9.5 percent) are uninsured. Access to health coverage is not actual coverage until we make every effort to enroll every child. Children who cannot read or compute are being sentenced to social and economic death in our competitive globalizing economy and too many Black students fall behind in school early on and do not catch up. Black children begin kindergarten with lower levels of school readiness than White children and our country has been very slow in investing in high quality early childhood programs unlike many of our competitor nations. More than 80 percent of fourth and eighth grade Black public school students cannot read or compute at grade level and Black children are more than twice as likely to drop out as White children. Each school day, 763 Black high school students drop out. Black students scored the lowest of any racial/ethnic group on the ACT® college entrance exam. Only 5 percent of these Black high school students were college ready compared to 33

L ast week, a parched inland southern California received a much-needed boost from Mother Nature in the form of rain. And although the rainfall only scratched

the surface for California’s total water reserves, the dry state still faces drought, looming water shortage/restrictions, and the potential for one of the worst fire seasons due to dry brush, hot weather, and strong Santa Ana winds. With summer still months away, California’s drought epidemic has caught the attention of lawmakers as California’s senate leader prepared a draft emergency drought relief bill to the tune of $644 million in order to fund projects to combat the state’s severe water shortage. Two weeks ago, Governor Jerry Brown declared a statewide drought emergency and released the California Water Action Plan. His plan includes a collection of actions over the next five years to address the water supply needs of California while meeting the needs of the environment. He is also asking all Californians to reduce their water use by 20 percent. The White House late last week announced that President Obama plans to visit drought-ravaged areas in Fresno this Friday before meeting with Jordan’s King Abdullah II at the Sunnylands estate in Rancho Mirage while House members in Washington DC argue how to alleviate the growing water crisis. Michael L. Connor, Commissioner, Bureau of Reclamation explained the crisis in a recent statement, “California is in the throes of the worst drought in the 160 years during which records have

been kept. As a result, the state’s overextended water system is in crisis. All segments of California’s economy— one of the largest in the world—are experiencing the effects of this drought. The economic, social and environmental impacts on agriculture, industry, jobs, communities’ drinking water and the ecosystem will reverberate across the country, and that is why actions need to be taken to address the situation not just in the short term, but also to sustain the state over the long run.” “Subsequently, the Departments of the Interior, Agriculture, and Commerce have committed to helping California prepare for and lessen drought impacts,” he said. Jeffrey Kightlinger, General Manager of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California recently echoed that sentiment and alluded to a reduction of water use. “The preliminary reduction of State Water Project deliveries to zero percent for Metropolitan and other parts of the state is unprecedented and reflects that California has little snowpack and little new water supply so far this year. This reinforces why Metropolitan staff is proposing to the Board of Directors a formal Water Supply Alert declaration for all of Southern California and a call for all residents to voluntarily reduce their water use by 20 percent,” said Kightlinger. Much of Riverside County is serviced by Western Municipal Water District. As a member agency of the Metropolitan Water District of Southern California (MWD), Western provides supplemental water to the cities of Corona, Norco, and Riverside and the water agencies of Box Springs Mutual, Eagle Valley Mutual, Elsinore Valley, Lee Lake and Rancho

California. Western serves customers directly in Orangecrest, Mission Grove, El Sobrante, Eagle Valley, Temescal Canyon, Woodcrest, Lake Mathews, portions of Mead Valley and Perris, and March Air Reserve Base. Upon Governor Brown’s declaration Metropolitan explained that while no water restrictions are being implemented locally, communities district-wide are asking the public to voluntarily trim water use, especially outside watering as we prepare for an expected long-term dry spell. “Metropolitan continues with a plan to draw on water reserves to meet demand this year. Reducing demands, however, is something that each and every Southern Californian can and should do at this time,” Kightlinger said.

THREAT OF FIRE DANGER California’s drought epidemic brings about another concern for local government, city officials, and residents because along with the drought crisis, comes the potential for the worse fire season ever recorded. For many residents living in the Inland Empire, the firestorm of 2003 remains fresh in their memory while some families are still recovering

from the damage done to their property. Fire season traditionally runs from June to October but in recent years, has become a year-round threat due to a mixture of perennial drought and the increasing number of homes built in canyons and on hillsides surrounded by brush and forest. Back in October 2003, 15 devastating forest fires burned for two weeks, primarily in San Diego, Ventura, Riverside, and San Bernardino counties forcing more than 80,000 people to evacuate their homes and burning 800,000 acres. More than 15,500 firefighters battled the blazes that killed 24 people and destroyed 3,640 homes. The Cedar Fire in San Diego, which burned through 200,000 acres, was the largest fire in California’s history. The most talked about blaze in recent Riverside County history was the Esperanza Fire, which killed five firefighters in 2006 and burned 40,200 acres. “Southern California is in a continual drought in one form or another, said Mitch Wesche, Division Chief and Public Information Officer for the City of Riverside Fire Department. “Wildland fire season,” he told the Voice, “is a year round hazard that we must be prepared to deal with at all time. We complete wildland fire training

all year, as well as public education events to educate the public of the importance of maintaining defensible space around their home all year long. The City of Riverside has a website that informs people how to prepare for wildland fire events.” Through education and prevention, the City of Riverside is working to minimize the effects of a potential fire threat. “In the City of Riverside our Prevention and Code Compliance Department monitor areas to make sure property owners are maintaining proper clearances. We are extra vigilant and aware. We also hit these fires hard with resources to prevent fire growth to levels that create disaster,” said Wesche. Wesche also offers advice to local residents: “Use good common sense. Do not discard cigarettes inappropriately, do not have campfires in fire danger areas, maintain defensible space around homes and property, do not drive vehicles off road in fire hazard areas where the catalytic converter can start a fire, maintain a high level of awareness of children playing with fire or suspicious activity.” For more information on fire safety especially during the drought visit: http://riversideca.gov/fire/.

During the month of January, Black Voice Foundation hosted the “In the

News” Ebony and Jet magazine exhibit, showcasing American history through minority media. With a lecture by Anthony S. Blacksher, and many excerpts from actual news stories, students and the CSUSB community were able to take a first hand walk back in time. Jet magazine was first introduced in 1951 to a national audience and has grown over the years from black and white to a full color publication covering Civil Rights, business, entertainment, international, fashion and education as it relates to Negro people, Founder John H. Johnson publication has been a staple in the (now) African American and many other communities. Next stop for the exhibit is the California State Capitol, hosted by the California Black Legislative Caucus.

D o not smoke and do not allow yourself to be exposed to smoke because second-hand smoke and third-hand smoke are just as

deadly as first-hand smoke, says a scientist at the University of California, Riverside who, along with colleagues, conducted the first animal study of the effects of third-hand smoke. While first-hand smoke refers to the smoke inhaled by a smoker and second-hand smoke to the exhaled smoke and other substances emanating from a burning cigarette that can get inhaled by others, third-hand smoke is the second-hand smoke that gets left on the surfaces of objects, ages over time and becomes progressively more toxic. “We studied, on mice, the effects of third-hand smoke on several organ systems under conditions that simulated third-hand smoke exposure of

humans,” said Manuela Martins-Green, a professor of cell biology who led the study. “We found significant damage occurs in the liver and lung. Wounds in these mice took longer to heal. Further, these mice displayed hyperactivity.” The results of the study provide a basis for studies on the toxic effects of third-hand smoke in humans and serve to inform potential regulatory policies aimed at preventing involuntary exposure to third-hand smoke. Third-hand smoke is a potential health threat to children, spouses of smokers and workers in environments where smoking is, or has been, allowed. Contamination of the homes of smokers by third-hand smoke is high, both on surfaces and in dust, including children’s bedrooms. Re-emission of nicotine from contaminated indoor surfaces in these households can lead to nicotine exposure levels similar to that of smoking. Third-hand smoke, which contains strong carcinogens, has been found to persist in houses, apartments and hotel rooms after smokers move out. The team led by Martins-Green found that the mice exposed to third-hand smoke in the lab showed alterations in multiple organ systems and excreted levels of a tobacco-specific carcinogen similar to those found in children exposed to second-hand smoke (and consequently to third-hand smoke). The research was funded by a grant to Martins-Green from the California Tobacco Related Disease Research Program.

DownloadDeNae Reagins, Co-Founder, Natlie A. Cole-Reagins Education and Cancer Research Foundation

N atlie A. Cole-Reagins , a UC Riverside graduate and longtime Riverside resident, began teaching elementary school in the

early 1990’s. This career choice quickly became one of her deepest passions. She was recognized in “Who’s Who Among American Teachers”, 2004-2005 and was awarded “Teacher of the Year” at Emerson Elementary School in 2002. She was employed by the Riverside Unified School District as an elementary teacher for sixteen years.

In the fall of 2006, she was diagnosed with Sino-Nasal Undifferentiated Carcinoma (SNUC). After seven months of chemotherapy, radiation proton therapy, multiple surgeries, hair loss, partial blindness, paralysis below the waist, and a courageous fight, Natlie’s body surrendered to this rare and aggressive cancer and she died at the age of 42 on June 8, 2007. Her husband, DeNae Reagins, began a research foundation in her name.

“Natlie and I married in 1988 and had two sons, Gared and Gavin. The boys were 13 and 16 when their mother died. Gared is currently completing his undergraduate studies at UCLA and Gavin is a sophomore at Howard University in Washington, DC.

Cancer was never successful of robbing Natlie of her strength, beauty, pursuits, passions, or her “ability to live while she lived”. The gravity and horror of this experience nearly paralyzed all of us who knew her well. But each of us witnessing her rise above the gravity of pain, scaring, and upsetting doctors’

reports, were taught by Natlie how to rise from ashes like a phoenix.

In Natlie’s honor and to promote her legacy of teaching, learning, and excellence, family, friends, and colleagues united to become founders and trustees of the Natlie A. Cole-Reagins Education and Cancer Research Foundation. The organization is non-profit and tax exempt. The core of our mission is dedicated to continuing Natlie’s life-long work in early childhood literacy and actively raising awareness and supporting the research of Sino Nasal Undifferentiated Carcinoma (SNUC) and its effects.

We will host our “Illumination & Inspiration” GALA fundraiser on Saturday, April 26, 2014, at the Downtown Marriott Riverside. The theme this year is, THE GREAT GALA.

The evening promises to be filled with gaiety featuring Great Gatsby era music by The Jimmie Dykes Quartet, a 5-star plated dinner, and live entertainment. In addition to the festive production we are planning for our guests, the event will also provide a forum for the trustees and advisory board members to unveil our signature initiatives:

“CORSICA”: THE COLE-REAGINS REGISTRY OF SINONASAL CANCER! The “CORSICA” project has been proposed by a research team at Stanford University School of Medicine and will be made possible in part, by a Natlie A. Cole-Reagins Education and Cancer Research Foundation funding pledge. The Stanford medical team will be on hand to announce “CORSICA”.

“ECLIPSE”: EARLY CHILDHOOD LITERACY PROJECT for STUDENT ENRICHMENT. The campaign includes grant funding for libraries of the schools Natlie attended as a child, grant funding for local community libraries, and increased funding for the Riverside Education Enrichment Foundation (REEF). Nationally recognized and local educational leaders will be on hand to introduce the “ECLIPSE” project initiative.

The Osborne Head and Neck Institute, housed at Cedar Sinai Medical Center in Beverly Hills, CA and the Natlie A. Cole-Reagins Education and Cancer Research Foundation Partnership. Dr. Ryan Osborne and his team of leading research physicians will serve as expert clinical support for the foundation. Grant funds provided by the Natlie A. Cole-Reagins Education and Cancer Research Foundation will provide early treatment options and post-diagnosis support for underprivileged Osborne Head and Neck Institute patients. Dr. Osborne’s team will be on hand during the gala to facilitate our understanding of Sino Nasal Undifferentiated Carcinoma (SNUC) and its impact.

DeNae Reagins is currently a senior partner and Chief Operating Officer of Instructional Access, Inc. The company provides consulting and training services in instructional technology for youth and families in “at-risk” situations. Additional information on the foundation is available at their website: www.natliefoundation.org.
