IntroductionAudience

This guide describes the installation process for the EMC VNX5700 Unified system.

Although your VNX system is customer installable, EMC recommends that the installation be performed by someone who has a general background in information technology. While prior training is not required, customers who successfully installed this product were trained as either:

EMC Proven Professionals Microsoft Certified Technology Specialists Cisco Certified Network Associates CompTIA A+ certified technicians

Your service provider offers a variety of installation and implementation services designed to assist you in installing and setting up your VNX system into a production environment as quickly and efficiently as possible. Contact your sales representative to take advantage of these service offerings.

Overview: Installing in an EMC cabinetIf your system was shipped in an EMC cabinet: 1. Read and complete the prerequisite tasks as described in Before you begin checklist on page 7. These tasks include: a. Creating a Product Support account b. Downloading the VNX5700 Hardware Information Guide c. Completing the VNX Unified worksheets d. Reviewing the resource requirements needed for your system 2. Unpack the shipping boxes and verify the shipping contents by using the packing instructions on the outside of the box as described in Unpacking the shipping boxes on page 9. 3. Verify cabling, including the power up cables as described in Cable your system on page 29. 4. Power up your system and verifying that the system powered up correctly by checking the LEDs of the Control Stations, blade enclosures, storage processors, standby power supply, and disk-array enclosures as described in Power up on page 45. 5. Complete the tasks listed in the System setup checklist section as described in System setup checklist on page 63. These tasks include: a. Attaching the bezel b. Connecting your Windows client c. Overview: Installing in an existing cabinetIf your system was shipped in a mini-rack: 1. Read and complete the prerequisite tasks as described in Before you begin checklist on page 7. These tasks include: a. Creating a Product Support account b. Downloading the VNX5700 Hardware Information Guide c. Completing the VNX Unified worksheets d. Reviewing the resource requirements needed for your system 2. Unpack the shipping boxes and verify the shipping contents as described in Unpacking the shipping boxes on page 9. 3. Remove mini-rack contents as described in Removing mini-rack contents on page 10. 4. Assemble the components as described in Assemble components in your cabinet on page 13 in your cabinet by first installing the rails and then installing each system component: a. Standby power supply b. Storage processor enclosure c. Control Stations d. Blade enclosure e. DAE 0 (vault DAE) 5. Cable your system as described in Cable your system on page 29: a. Cable your primary Control Station and optionally, a secondary Control Station. b. Cable your storage processors (SP A and SP B) and blades. c. Cable the SPS to the SPs (SP A and SP B). d. Cable SP A and B to DAE 0. 6. Power up your system by connecting power cables. Then, verify that the system powered up correctly by checking the LEDs of the components as described in Power up on page 45. 7. Optionally, you can add a disk-array enclosure, power it up and then verify that the DAE was powered up correct by checking the DAE LED status as described in Add extra storage on page 51. 8. Complete the tasks listed in the System setup checklist section as described in System setup checklist on page 63. These tasks include: a. Attach the bezel. b. Connect your Windows client. c. Initialize your system using the VNX Installation Assistant for File/Unified. d. Register your product by creating a Product Support account.6

Prepare your systemBefore you begin checklistUse the Before you begin checklist to help you determine what you need to install for your system.Table 1 Before you begin checklist Complete Task 1. Set up product support account. Comments If you do not already have a Product Support account, go to https://Support.EMC.com to set one up immediately. You will need a support account for access to the latest documentation and troubleshooting information, online chat, installation and maintenance videos, utilities and wizards.

2. Complete the VNX Unified The Planning worksheets provide management port, login information, and IP addresses. See Planning worksheets Planning worksheets. on page 67. To download additional worksheets, go to https://Support.EMC.com and search for VNX Unified Planning Worksheets. 3. Prepare site 4. Download additional VNX installation documentation (when appropriate). For resource requirements, go to Table 2 on page 8. EMC provides additional documentation for installation of certain VNX systems, including: DC-power (Telco) systems NEBS systems Dense-rack systems Download this documentation from Powerlink at Home > Support > Technical Documentation and Advisories > hardware/platforms Documentation > VNX Series > Installation/Configuration

5. Download VNX If you are unfamiliar with the VNX system architecture, download and review the VNX5700 Hardware documentation (optional) Information Guide before you begin the installation. Go to https://Support.EMC.com. From the Store heading, click VNX Series > Documentation > VNX5700 > Manuals and Guides > VNX5700 Hardware Information Guide. If you want to generate documentation specific for your system configuration to configure servers, update software, or add and replace hardware, go to www.emc.com/vnxsupport.

Network information The management port and login information in the Planning Worksheets of this install guide. This information includes: A static IP address for each storage processor in the system (for example, 123.45.6.7) The IPv6 global prefix and gateway for each SP if your network supports the IPv6 Internet Protocol and you want to manually configure IPv6 for the management ports The subnet mask of the LAN to which the system is connected The default gateway address of the LAN to which the system is connected

Unpack your systemUnpacking the shipping boxesYou might have received your system already racked and cabled in an EMC cabinet or in a mini rack.

If your system was shipped in an EMC cabinet: a. Follow the unpacking instructions on the outside of the box. b. Go to Cable your system on page 29 to verify the cabling.

If your system was shipped in a mini rack: a. Verify that you have received all of the systems components, including cables and bezels. Table 3 on page 9 lists the shipping contents. b. For damaged or missing components, notify your Sales associate immediately for replacements.

Removing mini-rack contents1. Remove the MAC Address label from the front of CS0 and attach to the inside cover of this document. Optionally, remove the MAC Address label from the front of CS1 and attach to the inside cover of this document. 2. Remove screws. a. Using a slotted- or Phillips-head screwdriver, remove the component screws from both sides as shown in Figure 1. Note: Remove only the screws holding the components in the mini-rack. Do not remove the screws holding the rails in the mini-rack. b. Retain the removed screws to install the components in the site rack.

3. Slide the components out and set aside as shown in Figure 2. a. Slide out from top to bottom. b. Carefully set aside each component as it is removed.

4. If blade enclosure 1 is included in the mini rack, slide it out, and remove the 2U adjustable rails separately. 5. Remove the screws on the adjustable rails. 6. Remove the adjustable rails from the shipping container as shown in Figure 3 on page 12.

Assemble components in your cabinetInstalling railsTwo people are required to install the components. 1. Install all the rails into the appropriate location in the site rack (for space considerations find the lowest available space). Figure 4 through Figure 10 on page 18 show examples of installing the rails for the VNX5700 components. 2. Insert the alignment pins of the rails into the holes in the back of the rack. Be sure that both sides are aligned. 3. Install the screws to hold the adjustable rails in place. The rails must be aligned carefully and they must be level. Wait until all screws are in place to tighten the screws.

SPS

Installing the standby power supplyTwo people are required to install the components. To avoid personal injury and/or damage to the equipment, do not attempt to lift and install the enclosure into a rack without a mechanical lift or help from another person. 1. Slide the SPS component into the cabinet rails at the bottom of the rack. 2. When the SPS is in place, tighten the screws to hold it in place in the cabinet. Tighten the screws enough to hold the component in place. Do not tighten the screws completely until all of the components are in place as shown in Figure 13.

Installing storage processor enclosureTwo people are required to install the components. The storage processor enclosure (SPE) is 2U in height. It goes into the next available space in the adjustable rails. 1. Locate the Product ID/SN from the product serial number tag located at the back of the SPE. Record this number to use when you register the product during system setup installation steps. 2. Slide the SPE into the slot above the SPS as shown in Figure 14. 3. Install the screws holding the component in place. It may be easier to install the screws working in a diagonal pattern bottom left and top right, bottom right and top left.

Installing optional blade enclosure 1Two people are required to install the components. 1. Install blade enclosure 1 above blade enclosure 0 as shown in Figure 16. 2. Slide blade enclosure 1 into the 2U adjustable rail above blade enclosure 0. 3. Install the screws holding the components in place. Wait until all components are in place to tighten all of the screws.

Installing Control Stations and extension cables1. Slide the primary Control Station (CS0) into the slot above the blade enclosures as shown in Figure 17. 2. Install the screws holding the Control Station in place. Do not fully tighten the component screws until all of the components are in place. 3. Install the extension cables after the Control Station has been installed into the rail. 4. Repeat steps 1-3 if a secondary Control Station (CS1) is shipped as shown in Figure 18 on page 26. Add extra storageDisk-array enclosure typesBefore you install DAEs in your cabinet, review the DAE section in the VNX5700 Hardware Information Guide. This guide provides cabling examples for interleaving and stacking your DAEs. Note: The cabling examples described in this guide are for illustration purposes only. Your system cabling might be different based on how many DAEs you install and whether you use load balancing to install these DAEs. DAEs are optional components that add extra storage. DAEs come in:

2U, 25 (2.5-inch) DAE as shown in Figure 43. 3U, 15 (3.5-inch) DAE as shown in Figure 44 on page 52.

If DAEs are used, the DAEs should be installed above the top-most blade enclosure in the cabinet. Either type of DAE may be installed. Assembling the DAEsThe DAE is heavy and should be installed into a rack by two people. To avoid personal injury and/or damage to the equipment, do not attempt to lift and install the enclosure into a rack without a mechanical lift or help from another person. 1. 4. Install the DAE rails: A 2U DAE will use 2U rails and the 3U DAE will use 3U rails. The DAE rails should be installed above the topmost blade enclosure. The rails must be aligned carefully. When arranging DAEs in your cabinet, you should consider rack space, I/O load balancing across the disks, and convenience. TheVNX5700 Hardware Information Guide provides more information on racking and cabling options. a. Insert the adjustable rail slide and seat both alignment pins into the rear channel of your cabinet as shown in Figure 46. b. Extend the rail and align the front of the rails. c. 5. Install the DAE:

Two people are required to install the components.
