    Getting started

    1 Lightly press down on the arrow andslide the battery cover open. Manganese batteries may not be used in this

    recorder. Be sure to stop the recorder be ore replacing

    the batteries. Unloading the batteries while therecorder is in use may cause a mal unction suchas corrupting the ile, etc.

    2 Insert size-AAA alkaline battery,observing the correct = and - polarities.

    3 Close the battery cover completelyby pressing to the direction A , thensliding to the direction B .

    Battery indicator:

    When [ ] appears on the display, replace the batteries as soon as possible. When the batteries aretoo weak, [ s ] and [ Battery Low ] appears on the display and the recorder shuts down. Remove the batteries i you are not going to use the recorder or an extended period o time. When changing batteries, AAA alkaline batteries or Olympus Ni-MH rechargeable batteries are

    recommended.

    h Turning on/off the powerTurning on the power:

    While the recorder is turned off, slide thePOWER/HOLDswitch in the direction indicatedby the arrow. The display will turn on, and the power will be turned

    on.Turning off the power:

    Slide the POWER/HOLDswitch in the directionindicated by the arrow for 1 seconds or longer. The display shuts of, and the power will be turned

    Set the recorder to HOLD mode ( A ):

    Slide the POWER/HOLDswitch to the HOLDposition. A ter [Hold ] appears on the display, the recorder is set

    to HOLD mode.Exit HOLD mode ( B ):

    Slide the POWER/HOLDswitch to the C posi-tion.

    Notes: I you press any button in HOLD mode, the clock display ashes or 2 seconds, but it will not

    operate the recorder. I HOLD is applied during playback (recording), operation is disabled with the playback (recording)

    state unchanged (When playback has ended and the recording has ended due to the remainingmemory being used up, it will stop).

    h Setting time and date [Time & Date]I you set the time and date be orehand, the in ormation when the ile is recorded is automaticallystored or each ile. Setting the time and date be orehand enables easier ile management.

    When you install batteries for the first time or each time you replace the batteries, the Hour indication will flash.

    1 Press the 9 or 0 button to select the itemto set. Select the item rom the hour ,

    minute , year , month andday with a lashing point.

    2 Press the + or button toset.

    3 Press the ` OK/MENUbutton to complete thesetting. The clock will start rom the set date and time. Press the

    ` OK/MENU button according to the time signal. While the recorder is during stop mode, press and hold

    the STOP (4 ) button to display the [ Time & Date ], and[Remain ].

    h Notes on the Folders The recorder provides ive olders, [ F ], [G], [H], [I ] and [ W]. To changethe older selection, press the FOLDER/INDEX/SCENEbutton while therecorder is stopped.

    About recording

    Follow the same steps by pressing the 9 or 0 buttonto select the next item, and press the + or button to set.

    You can select between 12 and 24 hour display by pressingthe FOLDER/INDEX/SCENEbutton while setting the hourand minute.

    You can select the order o the month , day and year bypressing the FOLDER/INDEX/SCENEbutton while settingthem.

    Changing the time and dateSelect [ Time & Date ] from the menu on the [ Device Menu ]. (please see Menu setting P.9, Time & Date P.14)

    h PauseWhile the recorder is during recording mode, press theREC(s ) button.

    The recorder will time out a ter 60 minutes when le t in RecPause.

    Resume Recording:Press the REC(s ) button again. Recording will resume at the point o interruption.

    h To quickly check on the recorded contentsWhile the recorder is during recording mode, press the`

    OK/MENUbutton. Stop recording and the ile that was just recorded will beplayed back.

    h Recording from external microphone or other devices The external microphone and other devices can be connectedand the sound can be recorded. Connect as ollows by the deviceto be used. Do not plug and unplug devices into the recorders jack while it

    is recording.

    Recording with external microphone:

    Connect an external microphone to the MICjack of the recorder.

    Notes: The built-in microphone will become inoperable when an

    external microphone is plugged into the recorders MIC jack. Microphones supported by plug-in power can also be used. When the external stereo microphone is used while [ Rec Mode ]

    is set to a monaural recording mode, audio will be recorded tothe L channel only *.

    When an external monaural microphone is used while[Rec Mode ] is set to a stereo recording mode, it enables recordingonly with the L channel microphone *.

    * For VN-8100PC only.

    Notes: To ensure recording rom the beginning, start recording a ter you see the display and the recording

    indicator lights on. When remaining recording time is less than 60 seconds, the recording indicator light starts ashing.

    When the recording time is decreasing to 30 or 10 seconds, the light ashes aster. [Folder Full ] will appear when the recording cannot be made any urther. Select on other older

    or delete any unnecessary les be ore recording. [Memory Full ] will appear when the memory is ull. Delete any unnecessary les be ore recording

    any urther. When external devices are connected, per orm a test recording and then adjust the output levelor the external devices.

    When you adjust the various sound quality settings related to playback on the recorder, the audiooutput signal sent out rom the EAR jack will change as well.

    4 Press the + or button to adjust to acomfortable listening volume. The volume can be adjusted within a range rom [ 00 ] to

    [30 ].

    5 Press the STOP (4 ) button at any point youwant to stop the playback. This will stop the ile being played back midway. When the

    resume unction is activated the stopped location will beregistered, even i the power is turned o . The next timethe power is turned on, playback may be resumed rom theregistered stopped location.

    h Forwarding and RewindingWhile the recorder is during stop mode, press and holdthe 9 or 0 button.

    I you release the button, it will stop. Press the ` OK/MENU button to start playback rom where it was stopped.

    While the recorder is during playback mode, press and

    hold the 9 or 0 button. When you release the button the recorder will resumenormal playback.

    I there is an index mark or temp mark in the middle o theile, the recorder will stop at that location.

    9 : The recorder stops when it reaches the end o theile. Continue pressing the 9 button to proceed

    with the cue rom the beginning o the next ile. 0 : The recorder stops when it reaches the beginning

    o the ile. Continue pressing the 0 buttonto proceed with the review rom the end o the

    previous ile.

    h Locating the beginning of the fileWhile the recorder is during stop mode or playback mode, press the 9 button.

    The recorder skips to the beginning o the next ile.While the recorder is during playback mode, press the0 button. The recorder skips to the beginning o the current ile.While the recorder is during stop mode, press the 0 button.

    The recorder skips to the beginning o the previous ile. I therecorder stop the midway o the ile, return to the beginningo the ile.

    While the recorder is during playback mode, press the0 button twice.

    The recorder skips to the beginning o the previous ile.Notes: When you skip to the beginning o the le during playback, the recorder will start playback at the

    position o an index mark or temp mark. The index mark and temp mark will be skipped whenyou per orm the operation in stop mode.

    When [Skip Space ] set to other than [ File Skip ], the recorder will skip orward/reverse the speci edtime, then will start playback.

    h Playback through earphoneAn earphone can be connected to the EAR jack of therecorder for listening.

    When the earphone is used, the recorder speaker will beswitched-o .

    Notes: To avoid irritation to the ear, insert the earphone a ter turning

    down the volume level. When you listen with the earphone during playback, do not

    raise the volume too much. It may cause hearing impairment

    and decrease in hearing ability.

    h Setting an index mark or a temp mark

    1 While the recorder isduring recording modeor playback mode, pressthe FOLDER/INDEX/SCENE button. Even a ter an index or temp

    mark is placed, recording orplayback will continue so youcan place index or temp marksin other locations in a similarmanner.

    I index marks and temp marks are placed, you can quickly ind a location you want to listen to inast orward and ast rewind and when cuing a ile. Index marks cannot be placed on iles created on

    machines other than this recorder, but temp marks can be placed instead to temporarily rememberdesired locations. Temp marks are temporary markings. They will be automatically erased i youmove to another ile or connect the recorder to a computer.

    Clearing an index mark or a temp mark:

    1 Locate the index or tempmark you want to clear.

    h Changing play speed The playback speed o the ile can be changed between 0.5 and 2 times speed. Change the speedaccording to need such as listening to meeting content at a ast speed or reviewing spots that youcouldn't catch in a language lesson at a slow speed.

    1Press the

    `OK/MENU button to start playback.

    2 While the recorder is dur-ing playback mode, pressthe ` OK/MENUbutton toopen the playback speedadjustment display.

    3 Press the + or button to adjust the playback speed. [x1.0 Play ] (Normal playback)

    Playback at normal speed.[x0.5 Play ] [x0.9 Play ] (Slow playback)Playback speed slows down.[x1.1 Play ] [x2.0 Play ] (Fast playback)Playback speed becomes aster.

    4 Press the ` OK/MENUbutton to complete thesetting. I you leave the recorder or 3 seconds, the setting will be

    applied and the recorder will return back to the originalscreen.

    Even i playback is stopped, the changed playback speed will be retained. The next playback willbe at that speed.

    Note: As in normal playback mode, you can stop playback, cue a le, or insert an index mark in slow

    playback and ast playback modes as well.

    2 Press the 9 or 0 but-ton to select the index ortemp mark to erase.

    3 While the index or tempnumber appears forapproximately 2 secondson the display, press theERASEbutton. The index or temp mark is

    erased.

    Notes: Up to 16 index and temp marks can be set in a le. I you try to place more than 16 index or

    temp marks, [ Index Full ] message will appear or index marks, and [ Temp Mark Full ] or tempmarks.

    Index or temp marks cannot be set or erased in a locked le.

    Index or temp numbers a ter the erased index or temp

    number will automatically move up.

    hHow to begin segment repeat playback

    1 Press the ` OK/MENU button to start playback.

    2 Press the REC(s ) buttonat the point you wantto start segment repeatplayback. Fast orwarding and rewinding

    can be conducted when [ w] islashing in the same manner as

    during normal playback, andyou can quickly proceed as ar as the end position.

    When it reaches to the end o the ile while [ w] is lashing,the point will become the end position, and repeat playback will start.

    3 Press the REC(s ) buttonagain at the position whereyou want to end segmentrepeat playback. The recorder repeatedly plays

    back the segment until thesegment repeat playback iscancelled.

    Note: As in normal playback mode, playback speed can be changed during segment repeat playback as

    well. I an index mark and temp mark are inserted or eliminated during segment repeat playback,segment repeat playback will be canceled and it will return to normal playback mode.

    Cancel the segment repeat playback function:

    Pressing any of the following buttons will release thesegment repeat playback.

    This unction enables repeated playback o part o the ile being played.

    h ErasingA selected ile can be erased rom a older. Also, all iles in a older can be erased simultaneously.

    2 While the recorder is dur-ing stop mode, press theERASEbutton.

    3 Press the + or button toselect [ Erase in Folder ] or[File Erase ].

    4 Press the ` OK/MENU button.

    5 Press the + button toselect [ Start ].

    6Press the

    ` OK/MENUbutton. The display changes to [ Erase! ] and erasing will start.

    [Erase Done ] is displayed when the ile is erased. Filenumbers will be reassigned automatically.

    Notes: The locked les and les set as read-only cannot be erased. I an action is not selected within 8 seconds, the recorder will return to stop status. It may take over 10 seconds to complete processing. Never remove batteries during this time

    because data may be corrupted. In addition, replace the batteries with new ones in order to ensurethat the batteries will not run out while processing.

    You cannot delete olders through the recorder.

    h Menu setting methodItems in menus are categorized so that you can quickly set a desired item. You can set each menuitem as ollows.

    1 While the recorder is dur-ing stop mode, playback mode or recording mode,press the ` OK/MENUbut-ton for 1second or longer.

    2 Press the + or buttonto move to the item you

    want to set.

    3 Press the ` OK/MENUor9 button to move thecursor to the item to set.

    4 Press the + or buttonto move to the item youwant to set.

    7 Press the ` OK/MENU

    button to complete thesetting. You will be in ormed that the

    settings have been establishedvia the screen.

    Pressing the 0 buttonwithout pressing the` OK/MENU button will cancelthe settings and return you tothe previous screen.

    8 Press the STOP (4 ) button to close the menuscreen. I you enter the menu during recording or playback and

    press the 0 button, it will allow you to return back tothe previous screen without interrupting recording orplayback.

    Notes: The recorder will stop i you leave it idle or 3 minutes during a menu setup operation, when a

    selected item is not applied. When entering menu settings during recording or playback, the menu settings will be cancelled

    i 8 seconds elapse with no buttons being pressed.

    h File Menu

    Erase Lock Locking a ile keeps important data rom being accidentally erased. Locked

    iles are not erased when you select to erase all iles rom a older.

    1 Select [ Erase Lock ] from the menu on the[File Menu ].

    In Menu mode selection:

    [On ]: Locks the ile and prevents it rom being erased.[Off ]: Unlocks the ile and allows it to be erased.

    File Divide (For VN-8100PC only)Files with large capacities and long recording times can be split so that they are easier to manageand edit.

    1 Select the file you want to divide.2 Start Playback or fast-forward the file, and stop

    the playback at divide position.3 Select [ File Divide ] from the menu on the [ File

    Menu ].4 Press the + button to select [ Start ], and then press

    the ` OK/MENUbutton. [Dividing! ] will be displayed and ile splitting will start.

    Splitting is completed when [File divide completed ] isdisplayed.

    PropertySelect the iles or which you would like tocon irm in ormation in advance be ore operat-ing the menu.

    1 Select [ Property ] from themenu on the [ File Menu ].[Name ] (File name), [ Date ] (Time stamp),[Size ] (File size), [Bit Rate ] (File ormat) willappear on the display.

    Notes: Only MP3 le recorded on this recorder can be divided. The recorder cannot divide les when the number o les in the older exceeds 198. Locked les cannot be divided. A ter splitting the le, the ront part o the le will be renamed as [ File name_1.MP3 ] and the

    latter part o the le will be named as [ File name_2.MP3 ]. I a le has an extremely short recording time, it may not be divide even i it is a MP3 le. Do not remove the battery during dividing le. This may damage the data.

    6 Press the + or button tochange the setting.

    5 Press the ` OK/MENUor 9 button. Moves to the setting o the selected item.

    VCVAWhen the microphone senses that sounds have reached a preset thresholdvolume level, the built-in Variable Control Voice Actuator (VCVA) startsrecording automatically, and stops when the volume drops below thethreshold level. The VCVA eature extends recording time and conservesmemory by stopping recording during silent periods, which helps theplayback to be more e icient.

    1 Select [ VCVA] from the menu on the [ Rec Menu ].In Menu mode selection:

    [On ]: Enables the VCVA unction.[Off ]: Disables this unction. Will resume recording in normal mode.

    Adjust the start/stop actuation level:I the surrounding noise is loud, the starting sensitivity o the VCVA can be adjusted according tothe recording situation.1 Press the REC(s ) button to start recording.

    When the sound volume is lower than the preset threshold soundlevel, recording automatically stops a ter 1 sec approximately,and [ Standby ] lashes on the display. The recording indicatorlight glows when recording starts and lashes when recordingpauses.

    h Rec Menu

    Mic SenseMicrophone sensitivity (Built-in or external microphone) is adjustable tomeet recording needs.

    1 Select [ Mic Sense ] from the menu on the[Rec Menu ].

    In Menu mode selection:

    [High ]: High recording sensitivity suitable or con erences withmany participants and recording audio at a distance or lowvolume.

    [Low ]: Standard recording sensitivity suitable or dictation.a Microphone sensitivity indicator

    Notes: When you would like to clearly record a speakers voice, set [ Mic Sense ] to [Low] and hold recordersbuilt-in microphone close to the speakers mouth (5-10 cm).

    I the [Rec Scene ] is set to a setting other than [ Off ], the [Mic Sense ] unction will not be available.Set [Rec Scene ] to [Off ] to use this unction.

    Rec ModeBesides stereo* and monaural recording, you can also select recording withpriority to sound quality, and recording with priority to recording time.Select the recording mode appropriate to your needs.

    [Rec Menu ].In Menu mode selection:

    Low Cut Filter The recorder has a Low Cut Filter unction to minimize low- requencysounds and record voices more clearly. This unction can reduce noise

    rom air conditioners, projectors and other similar noises.

    1 Select [ Low Cut Filter ] from the menu on the[Rec Menu ].

    In Menu mode selection:

    [On ]: Enables the Low Cut Filter unction.[Off ]: Disables this unction.

    indicator light on. To record a meeting and lecture clearly, set other than [ LP] in [Rec Mode ]. When the external monaural microphone is used while [ Rec Mode ] is set to a stereo recording

    mode, it enables recording only with the L channel microphone (For VN-8100PC only). I the [Rec Scene ] is set to a setting other than [ Off ], the [Rec Mode ] unction will not be available.

    2 Press the 9 or 0 button adjust the start/stopactuation level. The VCVA level can be set to any o 15 di erent values. The higher the value, the more sensitive the recorder to sounds.

    At the highest value, even the aintest sound will activaterecording.

    Notes: The start/stop actuation level also varies depending on the selected

    microphone sensitivity mode. I the starting level is not adjusted within 2 seconds, the display will return to the previous. To ensure success ul recordings, prior testing and adjustment o the start /stop actuation level is

    recommended. I the [Rec Scene ] is set to a setting other than [ Off ], the [ VCVA] unction will not be available.

    Set [Rec Scene ] to [Off ] to use this unction.

    h Play Menu

    Rec Scene The recording sett ing can be selected rom the [ Memo ], [Meeting ],[Conference ] templates to suit the recording scene or situation. You canalso save a recording setting o your choice.

    1 Select [ Rec Scene ] from the menu on the[Rec Menu ].

    2 Press the + or button to select the item to set, andthen press the ` OK/MENUor 9 button.

    In Menu mode selection:When [ Scene Select ] is selected:Press the + or button to select the recording scene you want to set,and then press ` OK/MENU button.[Off ]: Disables this unction.[Memo ]: Suitable or dictation.[Meeting ]: Suitable or recording meetings.[Conference ]: Suitable or seminars with a small number o

    people.[DNS]: Suitable or voice recognition so tware (Dragon

    NaturallySpeaking) compliant recording.[User Setting ]: Recording with menu settings saved using

    [Scene Save ].

    When [ Scene Save ] is selected:Press ` OK/MENU button. You can save the current [ Rec Menu ] menu settings in [ User

    Setting ].

    To change the [ Rec Scene ], return the screen to [ Scene Select ] bypressing and holding the FOLDER/INDEX/SCENEbutton or 1 secondor longer while the recorder is during stop mode.

    Note: I the [Rec Scene ] is set to a setting other than [ Off ], the menu settings or the recording unctions

    will not be available.Set the [ Rec Scene ] to [Off ] to use these unctions.

    Voice Filter (For VN-8100PC only) The recorder has a Voice Filter Function to cut low and high requencytones during normal, ast, or slow playback, and enable clear audioplayback.

    1 Select [ Voice Filter ] from the menu on the[Play Menu ].

    In Menu mode selection:[On ]: Enables the Voice Filter unction.[Off ]: Disables this unction.

    h Connecting to your PC

    1 Turn the recorders power ON.2 Connect the USB connection cable to

    the USB port of the PC.

    3 Make sure that the recorder isstopped, and then connect the USBcable to the connecting port on thisrecorder.Windows:When you open [ My Computer ], it will be recog-nized by the drive name o the product name.Macintosh:When connected, the recorder will be recognized

    by the drive name o the product name on thedesktop. [Remote ] is appeared on recorder i the USB

    cable is connected.

    Notes: Do not use USB connection cables other than the supplied cable. Using cables rom other

    manu acturers could result in damage to the recorder. Do not use the supplied USB extensioncable with devices rom other manu acturers.

    Re er to the users manual or your PC regarding the USB port on your PC. Be sure to push the cable connector all the way in. Otherwise, the recorder may not operate

    properly. When connecting the recorder through an USB hub the operation may become unstable. In suchcases, re rain rom using a USB hub.

    Disconnecting from your PC:Windows:1 Click [ ]on the task bar located at the lower-right corner of the

    screen. Click [ Safely remove USB Mass Storage Device ]. The drive letter will di er depending

    on the PC being used.

    2 When the safe to remove hardware window appears, click [ OK ].3 Disconnect the recorder from the PC.

    Apart rom using this unit as a recorder, you can use it as an external memory or your computer, as astorage device. The iles recorded by this recorder can be played back on your computer using Windows Media Player.

    You can also trans er the WMA iles downloaded with Windows Media Player to your recorder and listento them (excluding iles with copyright protection).

    Notes: While transmitting data, [ Busy ] is appeared, and the recording indicator light ashes. NEVER disconnect

    the USB while the recording indicator light is ashing. I you do, the data will be destroyed. In the Mac OS operational environment, WMA ormat les cannot be played back.
