Good  evening  and  welcome  to  tonight’s  performance  of  ‘Viva  Mexico’,  the  fourth  production  to  be  held  in  our  30th  anniversary  year  and  our  third  show  to  be  held  at  the  new  Bolsover  School  following  our  pantomime  ‘Sleeping  Beauty’  and  the  youth  section  musical  ‘West  Side  Story’.

It's  been  a  year  of  new  challenges,  from  adding  the  successful  'Songs  from  our  shows'  to  our  annual  calendar  in  April;  having  to  adapt  the  direction,  scenery  and  management  of  our  productions  to  Hit  the  requirements  and  constraints  of  our  new  venue;  and  the  election  of  a  new  management  team  at  our  AGM  in  July  -‐  however  we  continue  to  take  these  new  challenges  in  our  stride,  with  the  end  result  being  productions  we  have  good  fun  putting  on  and  we  hope  you  enjoy  coming  to  see.

Thank  you  once  again  for  your  support  tonight,  and  we  look  forward  to  seeing  you  here  again  for  our  pantomime,  ‘Beauty  and  the  Beast’,  in  January  2012.

Success again at the NODA East Midlands Awards

The  2011  awards  evening  for  the  NODA  East  Midlands  region  took  place  on  Sunday  8th  May  and  we  were  proud  once  again  to  receive  recognition  for  our  hard  work  by  being  nominated  in  two  categories.

The  play  ‘Dry  Rot’  was  nominated  for  the  Production  Award  For  Best  Play  for  District  2  while  the  pantomime  ‘Jack  and  The  Beanstalk’  completed  a  hat-‐trick  of  wins  in  the  Production  Award  for  Best  Pantomime  category  for  Distict  2,  our  third  win  in  as  many  years.

The  awards  were  presented  to  secretary  Janet  Atkinson  and  vice-‐chairman  Steve  Sowerby  at  the  event  at  Loughborough  Town  Hall.

The 15th Annual Dinner is a great success

The  15th  Bolsover  Drama  Group  Annual  Dinner  and  Dance  took  place  on  Saturday  21st  May  at  Grassmoor  Golf  Centre.

This  year's  event  proved  to  be  another  enjoyable  evening,  with  a  three-‐course  meal  and  after-‐dinner  music  provided  by  ‘Therapy’,  a  band  who  our  Lighting  Director,  Philip  Clark,  is  a  member  of.    Guest  of  Honour  for  the  evening  was  our  Musical  Director,  Nigel  Turner,  who  gave  a  speech  to  the  members  of  the  group  following  the  meal.

The  evening  saw  presentations  of  long  service  awards  to  Diane  Hulett  for  15  years  membership  and  founder-‐member  Rachel  Johnson  who  has  been  a  member  of  Bolsover  Drama  Group  for    30  years.

Videos  and  photos  from  the  evening  are  available  to  view  on  our  website,  bolsoverdramagroup.org

Building upon our successful 30th anniversary year

This  year  has  since  the  group  celebrate  the  30th  year  since  its  formation  in  1981.    Over  the  course  of  the  year  we  have  had  a  number  of  events  to  celebrate  this  fact,  including  our  30th  Anniversary  ‘Songs  from  our  shows’  evening  in  June.

On  Saturday  12th  November  the  Youth  Section  will  be  producing  their  own  showcase  evening  at  The  Assembly  Rooms,  featuring  songs  from  their  past  productions.

Following  on  from  the  success  of  this  year’s  events  we  are  introducing  the  showcase  evening  into  our  annual  schedule  of  productions,  with  next  year’s  event  taking  place  on  Saturday  31st  March  at  the  Assembly  Rooms.

We  are  also  planning  more  social  and  fundraising  events  over  the  next  12  months,  as  well  as  our  annual  Christmas  Variety  show.

Full  details  of  all  forthcoming  productions  and  events  can  be  found  on  the  “What’s  On”  section  of  our  website.

Ian SimpsonMendoza

“Buenas  dias  amigos,  me,  Mendoza,  I  am  hopping  you  are  going  to  enjoy  our  mostest  lovely  show.    As  the  leader  of    the  revolution  I  am  welcoming  you  all  to  the  school  of  Bolsover,

“Please  to  be  having  a  jolly  time  and  I  hope  my  singing  does  not  spoil  your  ears.

“Viva  la  Revolucion!”

Nigel TurnerMusical Director

Of  all  the  shows  I  have  worked  on  ‘Viva  Mexico’  is  by  far  the  most  satisfying  and  enjoyable.    The  cast  and  crew  share  this  view  and  I  really  think  this  shines  through  in  the  performance.    I  love  the  way  the  traditional  South  American  music  has  been  woven  into  the  story.    It  has  been  a  joy  to  prepare  for  tonight.

My  thanks  go  to  the  cast  for  their  endurance  and  stamina  through  every  rehearsal!    I  also  want  to  thank  my  partners  in  crime  -‐  Phil  at  17/2  and  Pat  Sabin.    It’s  a  great  team  producing  great  results  -‐  all  of  which  you’ll  see  and  hear  tonight.

Enjoy  the  show!

Chapel Update

On  Saturday  16th  July  a  group  of  helpers  from  the  Church  of  the  Latter  Day  Saints  lent  their  hand  to  assist  with  the  ongoing  chapel  restoration  project  currently  being  undertaken  by  the  Bolsover  Drama  Group.

The  Banister  Chapel  in  Shuttlewood  is  the  group’s  largest  asset  and  the  location  for  scenery

construction  and  storage  for  props  and  costumes.    Over  the  past  three  years  we  have  been  working  towards  restoring  the  building,  which  is  over  100  years  old,  in  order  so  that  we  can  continue  to  use  the  facility  for  many  years  to  come.

The  church  group,  who  heard  about  our  project

after  reading  about  our  work  at  our  last  production,  ‘West  Side  Story’,  gave  a  morning  of  their  time  in  bad  weather  to  help  clear  the  land  to  the  rear  of  the  building  and  help  remove  and  recycle  old  props  and  scenery.

This  work  has  been  in  conjunction  with  other  activities  undertaken  by  Bolsover  Drama  Group  during  the  summer,  including  a  clear  out  and

organisation  of  our  prop  storage  area,  as  well  as  planned  forthcoming  work  to  repair  aspects  of  the  building  itself  using  money  raised  through  our  fundraising  efforts  of  the  past  three  years.

There  is  still  much  work  to  do.    If  you  can  spare  some  time  to  help  our  project  please  speak  to  a  member  of  our  front  of  house  team  or  email  [email protected]

We  would  like  to  take  this  opportunity  to  express  our  thanks  to  members  of  the  church  for  donating  their  time  and  assistance.

All change for our management team

Our  AGM  in  July  saw  a  big  change  to  the  membership  of  our  management  team  as  Secretary  Janet  Atkinson  and  Treasurer  Chris  Booth  stepped  down  from  their  positions.    Both  Janet  and  Chris  have  held  their  roles  of  Secretary  and  Treasurer  for  over  20  years,  over  which  time  the  group  has  Hlourished  from  a  group  which  produced  one  or  two  productions  a  year,  to  now  producing  four  shows,  plus  variety  evenings  and  social  events,  with  a  large  adult  and  youth  membership.

The  consistency  of  the  management  team  has  been  one  of  the  key  factors  in  our  success,  and  it  is  thanks  to  the  tireless  efforts  of  Chris  and  Janet  over  the  last  two  decades,  and  beyond,  that  the  group  is  in  the  strong  position  it  is  in  today  and  is  able  to  celebrate  reaching  the  thirty-‐year  milestone.

The  group  would  like  to  express  its  gratitude  to  Chris  and  Janet,  and  welcome  Wendy  Blunt  and  Lisa  Brunt  into  the  roles  of  Secretary  and  Treasurer  respectively.

Mick Bramley

It  was  with  sadness  that  Bolsover  Drama  Group  learnt  of  the  passing  of  Mick  Bramley  earlier  this  year.

Mick  became  involved  with  the  group  through  his  son  Ben,  who  was  a  member  of  the  Youth  Section  for  our  1997  production  of  ‘Big  Al’.  Mick  gave  a  lot  of  support  and  assistance  to  the  Youth  Section  during  its  early  years  and  also  served  on  the  Bolsover  Drama  Group  committee.    In  1999  he  performed  on  stage  as  a  member  of  the  chorus  for  our  musical  ‘Guys  and  Dolls’.

Our  thoughts  are  with  his  family.

The  last  year  has  gone  by  quickly  as  usual!    It’s  a  real  privilege  to  be  a  principal  in  any  Bolsover  Drama  Group  production,  and  ‘Viva  Mexico’  is  no  exception.

Lopez  is  a  typical  Mexican  chief  of  police  of  that  time  era  -‐  a  law  unto  himself.    It’s  great  fun  to  play  him,  and  I’m  sure  you  will  all  be  thoroughly  entertained  as  the  show  unfolds.

Hasta  la  Vista!

Nicky ConstablePepe

I  Hirst  joined  the  group  after  Hinishing  a  three  year  Performing  Arts  course  in  Lincoln  four  years  ago.    I  have  played  some  very  interesting  parts  with  Bolsover  Drama  Group,  including  the  “Silly  Billy”  on  a  few  occasions,  and  the  lead,  Jimmy,  in  ‘Thoroughly  Modern  Millie’.

This  part  is  the  most  challenging  because  of  the  accent,  but  it  has  also  been  the  most  exciting.    Have  fun  and  Viva  Mexico!

Peter MaddisonPablo

I  Hirst  joined  the  group  in  2003,  my  Hirst  show  was  'Dazzle'.

When  I  joined  the  group  I  was  very  shy  and  my  reading  wasn't  very  good,  but  because  of  the  support  the  group  has  given  me  my  conHidence  and  reading  has  improved  a  lot.

My  Hirst  big  part  was  in  the  Youth  Section's  production  of  'Bugsy  Malone'  when  I  played  Fat  Sam.  At  18  I  joined  the  adult  section  and  played  Ching  Ho  in  'Thoroughly  Modern  Millie'.  I  have  done  lots  of  shows  and  hope  to  do  a  lot  more.

Ray HallSenator

Ray  joined  Bolsover  Drama  Group  in  2005  for  the  musical  ‘Kiss  Me  Kate’  and  has  since  appeared  in  numerous  musicals  and  pantomimes.

In  this  production  Ray  plays  the  role  of  Senator  Theodore  K.  Vanders.

It's  been  a  busy  year  with  lots  of  hard  work  on  and  off  stage,  but  this  production  has  been  great  fun  to  rehearse  for.    Learning  to  speak  with  a  Mexican  accent  has  been  a  challenge  (it  sounded  more  like  Irish  when  we  began  rehearsals)  but  thanks  to  the  rest  of  the  cast  I  think  I've  cracked  it!

Enjoy  the  show.

Michelle SimpsonLola

I  joined  Bolsover  Drama  Group  in  2002  and  got  my  Hirst  part,  Sue  Zuki  in  ‘Dazzle’,  three  weeks  later.    Since  then  I  have  been  involved  in  almost  every  show,  either  on  stage  or  doing  make-‐up  -‐  taking  principle  roles  in  musicals,  pantomimes  and  plays.

This  year  has  been  very  busy  -‐  not  only  have  I  taken  on  the  part  of  Lola,  but  I  was  also  Carrie  in  ‘Sleeping  Beauty’,  Rosita  in  ‘Surprise  Package’  and  Gladhand  in  ‘West  Side  Story’,  as  well  as  singing  two  solos  in  the  30th  year  anniversary  show.

Lola  is  a  great  part.    She  is  Hiesty  and  Hiery,  a  true  latino  who  has  been  lots  of  fun  to  play.    Enjoy  the  show,  and  be  sure  to  sing  along  if  you  know  the  tunes.

Diane HulettPriestess

This  is  a  special  year  for  me  as  it  marks  my  15th  year  of  being  part  of  this  group.

I  have  appeared  as  a  witch,  a  fairy,  an  empress  and  one  half  of  the  pantomime  cow,  and  have  been  fortunate  to  have  been  cast  in  several  principle  roles  in  the  musicals.    I  have  also  tried  my  hand  at  directing  the  Youth  Section  and  served  three  terms  on  the  committee.

I  particularly  like  the  song  I  sing  in  this  for  its  haunting  qualities.    I  hope  you  enjoy  the  show!

Dale ShawRamon

Oh  my  giddy  Aunt!  This  is  my  4th  show  this  year.  I  will  also  be  approaching  my  15  years  service  soon  and  it's  been  a  blast  all  the  way!

I  started  with  a  musical,  'Big  Al'  back  in  1997  and  now  I'm  doing  another  musical  15  years  on.

I  am  the  great  Ramon  in  'Viva  Mexico',  and  to  quote  "I  kill  you!"  (or  rather  I  want  to  kill  Lopez).

Synopsis

Mendoza,  Mexico's  maddest  revolutionary,  has  heard  that  a  stage  coach  due  to  pass  by  El  Rancho  Grande  carries  a  million  American  dollars  on  their  way  to  support  the  tyrannical  rule  of  the  current  Presidente.  Escorting  the  fortune  is  the  pompous  Senator  K.  Vanders,  of  Washington  DC,  accompanied  by  his  charming  daughter  Lucille.

Since  El  Rancho  Grande  is  owned  by  Mama  Inez,  whose  son,  Ramon,  is  one  of  Mexico's  promising  young  bandits,  what  is  more  natural  than  for  Mendoza  to  despatch  Ramon  to  rob  the  coach.  With  the  mission  accomplished,  Pablo  and  Pepe,  who  seldom  do  anything  right,  are  left  to  bring  the  stolen  luggage  back  to  the  Rancho.

Lopez,  the  villainous  chief  of  the  local  police,  suggests  to  the  outraged  Senator  that  he  and  his  daughter  could  best  recover  from  their  alarming  experience  by  resting  a  few  days  at  El  Rancho  Grande.  Lucille,  overawed  by  her  experience,  recognises  Ramon  as  Zorro,  the  bandit  behind  the  mask!  This  considerably  disturbs  his  Hiancee  Raquelita  and  her  Hiery  friend  Lola.  Will  Lucille  betray  him,  or  must  an  unacceptably  high  price  be  paid  for  her  silence?

Bernardo,  the  sergeant  of  police  offers  no  threat,  as  he  is  more  concerned  in  the  musicianship  of  the  police  band  rather  than  anything  as  dull  as  catching  outlaws,  but  Mama  cannot  suppress  the  creepy  premonition  she  has  about  his  Chief  of  Police,  the  sinister  Lopez.

The  story  reaches  a  tense  climax  during  the  colourful  Aztec  ceremony  held  in  a  ruined  temple  where  exactly  ten  years  ago  Ramon's  father  was  shot  dead  by  Lopez.  Will  the  fate  of  Ramon  be  the  same  as  his  father's  or  will  he  be  revenged  on  Lopez?

Meet the cast

Louise SuttonCasilda

I  moved  to  Bolsover  from  Worcestershire  4  years  ago  and  Hinally  plucked  up  the  courage  to  join  Bolsover  Drama  Group  in  May  this  year.

Although  I  have  had  experience  on  the  stage  with  The  Crescent  Theatre  in  Birmingham,  it  has  been  over  11  years  since  I  last  performed.

'Viva  Mexico'  will  be  my  Hirst  performance  with  Bolsover  Drama  Group  and  I  am  very  much  looking  forward  to  it.

When  I  joined  Bolsover  Drama  Group  last  December  it  was  just  to  “get  me  out  a  bit”  as  I  had  only  just  moved  to  the  area.    I’d  never  been  involved  with  amateur  dramatics  before,  so  I  never  dreamed  that  I  would  now  be  playing  Zorro’s  Hiancee  in  a  musical!

I  have  thoroughly  enjoyed  rehearsing  for  this  production  and  have  had  great  fun.    Thank  you  to  the  other  Bolsover  Drama  Group  members  who  have  helped,  guided  and  supported  me  throughout.

This  musical  is  very  funny  -‐  I  never  knew  they  could  be  this  funny!    Some  of  the  music  and  songs  will  be  familiar  to  you  -‐  so  hum  along  and  laugh  lots!

Paula BarghLucille

I  was  a  relative  late-‐comer  to  the  world  of  amateur  dramatics  –  I  didn’t  join  the  group  until  I  was  in  my  30’s  and  my  only  regret  is  that  I  did  not  do  it  before.  It  is  so  much  fun.

My  Hirst  part  was  Maid  Marian  in  ‘Robin  Hood  &  Babes  in  the  Wood’.  I  then  went  on  to  play  Mrs  Pearce  in  ‘My  Fair  Lady’,  Fleta  in  ‘Iolanthe’,  The  Hotel  Manager  in  ‘Out  Of  Order’,  Alsatia  the  witch  in  ‘Ali  Baba’  and  Jack  in  ‘Jack  &  The  Beanstalk.’

As  soon  as  I  read  the  script  of  this  show  I  knew  I  wanted  the  part  of  Lucille  and  I  was  lucky  enough  to  get  it  –  she  is  a  great  character  to  play.  Rehearsals  have  been  very  enjoyable,  it’s  a  lovely  show  with  lots  of  laughs.  I  hope  you  enjoy  watching  it  as  much  as  we  enjoy  performing  it.

Pam MosleyMama Inez

'Viva  Mexico'  is  a  musical  I  knew  very  little  about  but  after  being  offered  the  part  of  Mama  Inez  I  have  come  to  love  it.

Mama  is  the  type  of  character  I  love  to  play.    She  is  strong  with  a  dash  of  comedy.    Rehearsals  have  been  so  enjoyable  with  lots  of  laughter,  particularly  with  our  efforts  at  Mexican  accents.

We  have  a  great  cast  with  some  new  members  in  principal  roles.    I  am  sure  you  will  be  familiar  with  many  of  the  songs  so  why  not  sing  along  with  us  and  enjoy  a  great  show.
