Counties on the Move – Publication Now Available!

Highlighting County Offices of Education and their support of Arts Education

Knowing that the visual and performing arts contribute to effective schools, the California County Superintendents Educational Services Association (CCSESA) Arts Initiative continues to build capacity for arts education at the national, state, region, county, and local levels. As part of this effort, we continue to publicize examples of county superintendents’ support for arts education in an engaging informational booklet entitled Counties on the Move Toward Arts Education for All Students. This CCSESA publication includes submissions from counties across California and provides a snapshot of the wide variety of arts education projects, programs, planning strategies, and collaborations provided by county offices of education.

DEL NORTE County

Del Norte’s first annual Maker Fair Del Norte at Crescent Elk Middle School was an overwhelming success. With over 250 people in attendance, families ate, played, and made together! Adults and kids ignited their creativity with 3D printers, Hotweels speedometry, mouse trap car engineering, balloon bending, face painting, printmaking, felting, cross stitch, duct tape wallet making, essential oil salves, rock painting, a giant Rube Goldberg Machine, a 300-piece art show, live music, animal track casting, and 6 pottery wheels. Many of the activities were student-run, including 4 activities by the young men of Bar O Boys' Ranch! This was highly engaging with great community and parent engagement.

HUMBOLDT County

Humboldt COE is preparing for the 4th annual Youth Arts Festival as part of the Youth Expo at the Redwood Acres Fairgrounds. This free event celebrates visual arts and performances in dance, music and theatre from many K-12 students in our county. A woodworking competition and “all things digital” fair also take place. Youth groups of all demographics give demonstrations. It is June 4 – June 5.

LAKE County

Taylor Observatory is hosting field trips, including on outdoor activity such as toilet paper roll solar system scale projects, a classroom activity (such as the oreo lab). LCOE has also done drone with art projects (students are creating a “Welcome to 5th Grade” video, much like the hotel videos one would see at a hotel as well as some work with perspective). Students are building mazes to code Dash through. They have to use math to determine the length Dash will travel.

MENDOCINO County

MCOE integrated art into the Afterschool Conference held in January by providing an opportunity for afterschool staff to interact with Art in History. Art in History provided the training and materials for free and showed how art projects can be related to the common core standards for History. They also provided information on grants that could support these projects during the school day and out of school time.

Brought back from the STEAM conference in Humboldt, teachers were introduced to the Hummingbird Kits and how technology and art can be integrated to be used in ELA and Math courses. Teachers were given an overview of resources and the opportunity to work with the kits. Two classroom kits are now available for teachers throughout the County to check out. They have been in three schools already and are scheduled to be out in schools the beginning of next year.

SONOMA County

Sonoma COE hosted its second Five Minute Film Festival in March with over 95 film submissions. The Sonoma County Office of Education is now partnering with the Luther Burbank Center and the Kennedy Center for the Arts to provide professional development opportunities for Arts Integration. In August SCOE will be hosting our first reMAKE Education Summit. http://www.remakeeducation.org/

BCOE Signs Arts Education Resolution – Prelude to Countywide Strategic Arts Education Plan As a prelude to the release of Butte County’s first ever Strategic Arts Education Plan - All Eyes on the Arts, the Butte County Office of Education board of trustees unanimously signed a Butte County Arts Education Resolution affirming the county’s commitment to arts education at a board meeting in May. We wanted to get BCOE Board public support for arts education as part of student access to a broad curriculum. This formal Butte County Office of Education recognition and subsequent Strategic Arts Education Plan will help support districts and schools in the county with bringing about a renaissance in arts education and integration in their schools after years of restricted spending and budget cuts in the arts. Renowned Jazz Group Provides Educational Outreach for Hundreds of Students CCSESA Region 2 / BCOE Visual and Performing Arts (VAPA) in partnership with CSU Chico Performances and the Oroville State Theatre presented a Get Hip jazz education outreach to 1200 local students, grades 3-5, during two free concerts on Friday morning, April 15th. The nationally renowned JazzReach–Metta Quintet sparked curiosity, engaged young minds, and ignited creative imaginations with an interactive introduction to jazz that illuminated the art form's cultural origins, concepts about improvisation and creative self-expression. Students also explored the role and responsibility of each individual member of the jazz ensemble and how they all must work together to serve and achieve the collective goal of making great music. JazzReach drew parallels between the ensemble, the bandstand, and community as an effective means to promote important social values such as civic responsibility, teamwork, collaboration and cooperation.

MARIN County

Marin County Office of Education will be offering the Integrated Learning Specialist Program Course B: Ongoing Assessment Strategies & Applications on June 20-24th from 9 am – 4 pm. To register, click here.

In mid-May, Marin County Office of Education launched a comprehensive mapping of arts education offerings in Marin's TK-grade 12 classrooms. Led by Quadrant Research, the firm also leading the National Arts Education Data Project, this mapping initiative intends to capture arts instruction provided by credentialed teachers and teaching artists during the school day and in school-connected settings.

The Marin mapping initiative addresses two major critiques of the National Arts Education Data Project: 1) that it does not capture elementary level music education; and, 2) that it does not take into consideration the contributions of nonprofit arts & cultural organizations. The resulting data will be housed in an interactive, searchable, online database accessible to principals, teachers, parents, students, administrators and the general public. It will provide a spotlight on arts-rich schools as well as places where more resources are needed to implement robust arts education. The mapping is expected to be completed by the fall.

Ventura@150: Celebrating the City of Good Fortune

April marks the culmination of the City of Ventura’s 6-month celebration of its founding 150 years ago. The Museum has worked jointly with the sesquicentennial committee to provide resource material, photos, and a venue for some of its significant events. Thanks to our unparalleled collection of material—managed by our unparalleled Research Librarian Charles Johnson—the materials used in the City’s commemoration are rich, authentic and expressive. Curator Anna Bermudez and her team have put together a celebratory exhibition on the history of Ventura, comprising dramatic, beautiful photos of the City’s diverse founders, such as businessman Edward Hirshfelder, who owned the O.K. Shoe Store on Main St. in Ventura for more than 30 years. Also on view is a photo of Ventura pioneer Fritz Huntsinger, Sr. boxing professional fighter Jack Dempsey in Ventura. A special fun section within the exhibition, called “Dr. Bard’s Cabinet of Curiosities” features some of the more obscure and rare items from our collection—you must see it! The two-headed lamb is making a special appearance in this section. Enjoy seeing this dubious item on display before it goes back into storage!

Now on view in the Smith Gallery

Seeds of Revolution: The Affair of the Diamond Necklace

A display of the George Stuart Historical Figures, which centers around a real-life mystery story that led up to the French Revolution. This dramatic tale “stars” Marie Antoinette, Cardinal de Rohan, Madame du Barry, King Louis XV and King Louis XVI, all being maneuvered and manipulated by a “pseudo”-royal named Jeanne de la Motte, trying to

sell an exquisite necklace. Mr. Stuart’s attention to detail with the intricate and rich royal costumes, set into the striking set designs of our own Eric Howes keep the story enthralling and alive.

Current Exhibitions:

• Machine Age Art: The Artwork of Wendell Dowling Wendell Dowling is a local artist with deep roots in Santa Paula. His artistic talents have led him into a wide variety of artistic pursuits from working as a technical illustrator for an engineering firm to a freelance artist creating illustrations for numerous books and magazines. He also created the mural on the Ventura County Agriculture Building. A selection of his drawings and paintings, representing more than 30 years of his creativity, will be on view at the Ag Museum.

• The Dirt on Tractors The tractors we see today plowing our local fields are the result of years of experimentation, innovation, and development. This exhibit explores the major milestones in the evolution of the tractor, with several examples of full-scale machines on display. In the late 19th and early 20th centuries, America’s growing population pressured farmers to produce more crops faster and more efficiently. Plowing and cultivating farmland takes power and lots of it. The only source of power farmers had were draft animals such as horses, mules, and oxen. As the 20th century unfolded, tractors quickly became the preferred source of power on America’s farms. In 1950, the number of tractors finally outnumbered the number of draft animals on American farms. Just in time for Father’s Day, this exhibition makes a great outing for families and children of all ages.

• AG AIR: Aviation in Agriculture Told through historic photographs, and present-day panoramic photos, Ag Air: Aviation in Agriculture tells the story of the great airmen, scientists and inventers who forged an industry that has become an integral part of farming across the country and around the world. From its humble beginnings in America’s Deep South to the GPS guided precision aircraft of today, the story of agricultural aviation is as varied and exciting as the history of aviation itself. Often associated with the daredevil barnstormers of yesteryear, today’s crop dusters are highly trained precision pilots.

SAN DIEGO County The San Diego County Office of Education presented the Kickstart the Arts in (Y)Our Schools on May 5. This event brings together the San Diego Arts Network for school administrators and teacher leaders and the Arts Education Resource Organization for teaching artists for a day of networking and professional development. Keynote speaker, Merryl Goldberg, from California State University San Marcos shared her findings from a research study of 168 engineers at the high tech company ViaSat and the fundamental role their arts backgrounds play in their job success. 4 new school districts in San Diego County have completed Strategic Arts Plans, bringing the total number of districts with plans to 9 and impacting more than 50% of the students in San Diego County. Arts Empower, the countywide strategic arts education initiative, and SouthCAP, the Southern Counties Arts Project, are partners in this work.

San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools Celebration for the Performing Arts took place on April 12, 2016. Over 500 students, dance, music and theatre students performed at the California Theatre, San Bernardino, CA,

San Bernardino County Superintendent of Schools in partnership with RIMS California Arts Project held the Young Artists’ Gallery juried exhibition for grades 7 - 12. Over 100 pieces were submitted in nine visual art categories, with 70% being selected for the exhibition. The reception was held on May 12th at the National Orange Show, Art Gallery, San Bernardino, CA.

For the first time ever, the CCSESA Arts Colloquium was held in Los Angeles. The UCLA Hammer Museum and the J. Paul Getty Museum partnered with The Los Angeles County Office of Education to bring educators together for an Arts Learning Colloquium. Marcia Reed, Curator of the Getty Research Instituted introduces arts educators to the spectacular Magoa caves, an ancient Silk Road site dating from the 4th to 14th centuries. We explored replicas of three of the nearly 500 decorated Buddhist cave temples that comprise this UNESCO World Heritage Site. This exhibition celebrates the over 25 years of collaboration between the Getty Conservation Institute and the Dunhuang Academy to conserve and protect this World Heritage site.

Supported by the Education Specialist we experienced these caves in multiple ways First in three replica caves constructed on the plaza, in a traditional gallery with Buddha sculptures, manuscripts and other artifacts, and finally in a virtual reality experience which is considered the future of how museums can bring art to the world, where ever they live. The experience also introduced strategies and protocols that we recommend be incorporated into the classroom setting.
