NEWSLETTER OF VENTANA VISTA ELEMENTARY SCHOOL A Message from the Principal The first part of the 2015-2016 year has gone by quickly, and it is at this time of the year that we reflect on the many things for which we are thankful. I want to take this opportunity to share just a few of them with you: We are thankful for our students who come to school every day ready to learn – they give us all a daily reminder of what is important and why we are here. We are thankful for the teachers, assistants, health aides, bus drivers, secretaries, nurses, lunchroom aides, support staff, and therapists who really care about student achievement and have the best interests of our students at heart. We are also thankful for our volunteers who enthusiastically contribute so much to our school. We see dedicated and tireless individuals going above and beyond to make sure that great things happen in our school. They do make a difference, and the children, in their own individual ways, benefit from those efforts. Most importantly, we are thankful for the parents that support our work with the children. You continue to share your most valuable treasure with us and work hard to be a partner in your children’s education, safety and well-being. For this, we are ever so thankful. Ventana Vista Site Council The Ventana Vista Site Council has been working to focus efforts on improving family engagement and two-way communication about student learning. Out of these council meetings have come many great ideas, including an idea to invite you to share what we can do for you and what you can share with us to initiate more contact with families so we can maximize and share the resources we have to improve student learning. Are you a photographer, web developer, landscaper, designer, painter, organizer, scientist, weekend DJ, etc? Perhaps you have time to prepare things at home for teachers/FFO. Can you donate recycled treasures to share with our new Makerspace opening in January? Maybe there is something that you need that we can provide. Do you need time from a staff member to discuss how to support your child in math or reading? Do you need resources from our counselor or help with your family for the holidays? Please take a moment to complete the Time, Treasure, and Talent Form so we can discover how to help each other. I am thankful for the opportunity to serve you as principal of our school. Together we are building a stronger sense of community and providing excellent educational experiences for our students. I would like to wish all of you and your families a happy, healthy and relaxing Thanksgiving holiday! Sincerely, Dana Mulay Principal

Arizona Tax Credit in the Foothills

The Catalina Foothills School District is a wonderful school community! It is impressive to see a community with such a commitment to educational excellence and support of the schools here in the Foothills. CFSD would not be the district it is today without the community that surrounds and supports it! The success of our schools' extracurricular programs is tied to the generous contributions of community members who divert some of their state tax funds to the CFSD programs of their choice! How does it Work? Any Arizona taxpayer has the opportunity to give to Catalina Foothills School District instead of paying it in taxes. The donation must be earmarked for support of one of our many qualifying fee-based, extracurricular activities. We'll send the donor a receipt for their records. Then, when the taxpayer fills out their 2015 Arizona state taxes, they can subtract the amount of the donation, up to $400 (joint filers) and $200 (individuals), from what is owed in state taxes. This is not just a tax deduction…it is a tax credit that reduces the amount of taxes owed to the state, dollar-for-dollar. For more information about how this credit will work for your individual tax situation, contact your tax advisor. How are these Dollars Spent? Tax Credit dollars are spent to support fee-based, extra-curricular offerings. However, regular communication between Mrs. Mulay and Community Schools, leads to a beneficial partnerships that also helps support the needs at Ventana Vista, as dollars are spent to serve a joint purpose. What is the Tax Credit Goal at Ventana Vista? We are aiming for $30,000…that is only 150 individuals at $200 each! Where Can I Donate? You can donate online (http://www.cfsd16.org/public/_community/donate.aspx) with your credit card or fill out the 2015 Tax Credit Form, which can be mailed to Murphey Administration Center, 2101 E River Rd., Tucson, AZ, 85718 or dropped off in person at any CFSD school, by December 31, 2015. Please make checks payable to Catalina Foothills School District (CFSD) and note the program to which you'd like to contribute on the check. What have we purchased at Ventana Vista with tax credit dollars? Here are some of the joint projects that Community Schools and Mrs. Mulay have completed/purchased within the past 5 years, as well as projects underway or yet to come:

• Supplies for the new Maker’s Space (STEM related project creation room)

Page 4: Vistas #7

November 1, 2015 To: Parents of CFSD Students From: Mary Kamerzell, Superintendent of Schools

Subject: Open Enrollment for School Year 2016-2017 Pursuant to A.R.S. §15-816 Catalina Foothills School District will begin its open enrollment application procedures for the 2016-2017 school year on December 1, 2015. The law requires every Arizona school district to follow a prescribed procedure and timetable for admitting out-of-district transfer students and resident transfer students (those who live in the District but are attending a school outside the attendance area of their residence). All students who currently attend CFSD schools and reside in other districts, and all CFSD resident students who are attending a different school than they would based on their residence, are impacted by this law. We require that all open enrollment students apply for admission each year. Therefore, if your child is a resident transfer (open enrollment) student and you want him/her to continue in that capacity, or if your child resides outside of the district and you want him/her to continue to attend a CFSD school next year, please complete an application form between December 1, 2015, and February 29, 2016. Open Enrollment applications and information regarding the application process are on the district web site, www.cfsd16.org (as of December 1, 2015), or at the district office Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. The district office is located at: Catalina Foothills School District J. W. Murphey Administration Center 2101 E. River Road Tucson, AZ 85718 (520) 209-7539 Contact: Amie Sams Applications will be available as of December 1, 2015, and may be completed on-line (www.cfsd16.org), or submitted in person at the district office. Electronic applications must be submitted no later than February 29, 2016, and hard copies by 4:00 p.m. on Monday, February 29, 2016. Decisions about admission, based on capacity, will be made by April l, 2016. At that time, all applicants who applied during the application period will be notified whether their applications have been accepted, wait listed, or declined by U.S. Mail.

the reader. The board approved the revisions to the second draft of the policy and regulation as presented. Approval of Proposed Revisions to Policy JFAB Tuition/Admission of Nonresident Students (second reading) Dr. Bartlett presented the second reading of proposed revisions to the policy. It was noted that the statute does not make a provision for funding for students enrolled in a residential boarding academy. Further review of the state statute was done in consultation with legal counsel resulting in a language revision that states that the district “may” admit instead of “shall” admit without tuition. The board approved the revisions to the policy as presented. Approval of Proposed Revisions to Policy JLIA Supervisions of Students (second reading) Dr. Bartlett presented the second reading of proposed revisions to the policy. After the first reading of the policy it was recommended to move the final paragraph regarding contact with students to the beginning of the policy. The proposed revisions from the first reading were not modified. The proposed revisions intended to provide greater clarity concerning the supervision of students. The board approved the revisions to the policy as presented. Approval of 2016-2017 Calendar Dr. Bartlett reviewed the 2016-2017 school calendar. This calendar was preliminarily approved by the board in November 2014. Initial Review of 2017-2018 Calendar Option (first reading) Dr. Bartlett presented the preliminary 2017-2018 school calendar. The draft is very similar to the 2016-2017 calendar to include 90-day semesters. Highlights include August 10 for the first day of school; parent-teacher conference days of October 9-10; a Winter Break that includes three weekends; Spring Break on April 2-6; and May 23 for the last day of school. Preliminary approval of this calendar will be on the November 23, 2015, board agenda. Consideration of Proposed Revisions to Regulation KDB-R and Exhibit KDB-E Public’s Right to Know/Freedom of Information (first reading) Dr. Kamerzell presented proposed changes to regulation KDB-R and exhibit KDB-E. The proposed

increase to copy fees was 35¢ per page for board minutes, agendas, financial records, and contracts, courses of study, or statistical summaries; and 50¢ per page for other materials. The exhibit was modified to allow the district to acquire the information necessary to respond to and keep a record of public information requests. The board proposed that the statutory reference for allowable costs be inserted into the regulation. The board will consider a second reading on November 23. Consideration of Proposed Arizona School Boards Association (ASBA) Bylaw Changes Governing Board President Carole Siegler presented the two Arizona School Boards Association (ASBA) proposed bylaw changes that require the vote of member governing boards. The proposed changes included expanding the membership of the ASBA Board of Directors, and adding a requirement for written notification of nominations for office one week before the annual membership meeting.
