Vistara
Vistara is an Indian airline company which is awaitingregulatory approval for operations. It is established as ajoint venture between India’s Tata Sons and SingaporeAirlines. The new carrier, announced in 2013, will be afull-service airline based in New Delhi. The two com-panies will initially invest a combined US$100 millionto start the carrier, with Tata Sons owning 51 per centand Singapore Airlines (SIA) owing the remaining 49 percent.[1] This is the third attempt of SIA and Tata at gain-ing a foothold in the Indian air travel market. They firstmade an attempt to launch a domestic carrier in 1995, butthe project failed to take off due to a change in civil avia-tion policy that barred foreign carriers from holding stakein domestic airlines. In 2000, the two bid for a stake inAir India but the offer was later withdrawn.[2] The Tataand SIA joint-venture received approval from India’s For-eign Investment Promotion Board in October 2013, al-lowing SIA to take a 49 percent stake in the airline.[3]Commercial operations are likely to start in October 2014after it obtains an air operator’s permit.[4] The Hindi termvistara implies ‘limitless expanse’.[5]
Vistara will operate mainly on trunk routes, focussing onthe northern part of the country. The airline will have87 weekly flights linking its hub in Delhi to Mumbai,Goa, Chandigarh, Bangalore, Hyderabad, Ahmedabad,Jammu, Srinagar, and Patna.[6]
