Visitation Catholic Church

BEGINS THIS SATURDAY AND SUNDAY!

Sharing Tree ornaments available Nov. 10/11 and will be hung on trees at the Church entrances... Each Christmas season, Visitation parishioners have the opportunity to help people in need in the Elmhurst area and St. Alexis Parish in Bensenville by participating in the Visitation Sharing Tree.

This is how it works: Choose an ornament from the tree. On the ornament will be the name and a suggested gift for that person. (Suggested range $30-$50.) Buy a gift for that special person, wrap the gift, tape the ornament to the front of the gift as a label, return gift to the Parish Center on Saturday, Dec. 1, at the 5 pm Mass or Sunday, Dec. 2, 11:30 am Mass.

ul Helpful Hint: Take a picture of your ornament when you pick it off the tree. Your information will then be handy when shopping and/or if you misplace the ornament!

NEWS FROM THE P.I.T.

PRIEST IN TRAINING By Father Michael Kearney

Would you give everything you have to God? Would you give it all to a stranger?

T hese are the stories from this weekend that seem to challenge us! Our first reading deals with a widow preparing for death due to a famine, only to have a request from the prophet Elijah to prepare him a meal with what seems to be her last handful of flour and oil. Yet, Elijah assures her that she would not run out! The widow trusts, and the Lord provides.

T he Gospel is similar. The wealthy give out of their abundance knowing that they can continue on to what they believe — to provide for themselves. While the widow, who has no assurances what the next day would hold, gives the very little she has, which was everything! The challenge for us is the question,

can we give the Lord our all?

I f you can say yes, praise the Lord! The Lord will reward you. If our answer is no, well then thank the Lord that He is patient and kind. The Lord’s invitation to trust Him is ongoing. The Lord continues to invite us to trust Him and give him everything. As the Apostles and saints struggled at various times to give the Lord everything, we can trust the Lord will afford us that same opportunity to turn to Him and give Him everything! May we strive to give the Lord, like the two

widows we heard in our readings, everything!

Goal: $136,900.00 Amount Pledged: $159,324.00 Amount Paid: $155,144.00 Donor Count: 414 Thank you to all who have responded to the Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal. We are most grateful for your generosity and will keep you in our prayers.

READINGS FOR THE WEEK [November 12-18]

LIVING the

WORD

LIVING the

WORD

THIS WEEK’S FOCUS: PUTTING GOD—AND OTHERS—FIRST

Two widows figure prominently in these readings. The first offers her last bit of sustenance to a foreigner, a stranger; the second offers an enormous portion of her small worldly wealth to God. FIRST READING The widow of Zarephath had only a handful of flour and a little oil, but made a little cake for Elijah (1 Kings 17:10-16). The Israelites were experiencing a great drought in their land. They were worshiping Baal, the pagan god of fertil-ity, believing that Baal would bring the rain to fertilize the land. Yahweh withheld the rain to show them that he was the only true God. The widow from the town had a small amount of food when Elijah, the man of God, asked her for something to eat. She responded that she was planning to prepare what little she had for herself and her son and then sit down and die. Elijah reassured her, telling her she would not suffer from want. She trusted and obeyed, preparing a cake of bread for him to eat. God miraculously fulfilled the promise that Elijah had made. The woman’s jug of oil and jar of flour did not run out for the entire time of the drought. SECOND READING Christ will appear a second time to bring salvation to those who eagerly await him (Hebrews 9:24-28). The Old Testament priests had to offer many sacrifices because all of their sacrifices were imperfect. None of them fully accomplished that which was intended: to free us from our sins. Jesus, on the other hand, offered the perfect sacrifice. He was sinless, and therefore his sacrifice was one of pure love. Furthermore, he was God’s only Son, and therefore his sacrifice of his own

life was absolutely perfect and accomplished what it sought: the remission of our sins. GOSPEL This poor widow put in more than all the other contributors (Mark 12:38-44 [41-44]). There is a contrast between the scribes who loved to be seen and given places of honor, and the poor widow who contributes everything she has to the temple. The scribes are described as people who devour the savings of widows. They seek contribution for their religious work, but everything they do is for prestige and for show. They are really arrogant in their practice of their religious duties. They use religion as a way to advance themselves at the cost of others. The poor widow of this Gospel demonstrates the true spirit of religious faith. Her small contribution to the temple treasury was all that she had. She was placing herself totally in the hands of the Lord. She was not seeking power or prestige — she was simply performing an act of absolute trust. She is what the Beatitudes call poor in spirit, for her only treasure was the love of God. REFLECTION Ohio Dominican University students, faculty and staff would gather together for “Soup and Scripture.” They were fed with food for their bodies and for their souls. During one of their gatherings, a student commented: “I gain hope when I read stories about people who put God and the service of others first. I want to do the same.” That’s what the two widows in the Gospel do. The widow of Sidon offers the hospitality expected in a culture without convenience stores or fast-food restau-rants. Elijah asks for a small cake to feed him before she feeds herself and her son their last bits of food. She does. She puts Elijah and the God he served first. Her generos-ity was blessed by her food lasting for a year. “From her poverty, has contributed all she had, her whole liveli-hood.” (Mark 12:44). She put God first, unlike those who are rich and the scribes. They put themselves first. Both stories offer hope. When we put God first, sacrificing what we have out of love for God and God’s people, we find blessing, even in the midst of poverty. When we put ourselves first, we might gain attention for awhile, but it doesn’t last. Christ the high priest put God and puts us first. He offered himself to God at the cost of his life. Ac-cording to the prayer of St. Francis: “It is in giving that we receive, in pardoning that we are pardoned. And in dying that we are born to eternal life.” The widows and Jesus witness the truth of these words. We are given hope that if we make God our priority, we will receive more than we can imagine by giving, all that we have.

"‘Go," He Said’”, is the title of a pastoral letter published by Bishop Conlon. The letter is included in the November issue of Christ is our Hope Magazine, or can be viewed online at www.dioceseofjoliet.org/bishop in mobile-friendly format, downloadable PDF or audio in both English/Spanish, along with reflection questions for individuals and small groups. Please consider reading or listening to our Bishop's letter and consider how you can Go and Make Disciples.

If you have yet donated to the 2018 Catholic Ministries Annual Appeal (CMAA), please mark your calendar for Tuesday, Nov. 27, 2018. The 2018 CMAA goal of $8.2 million is within reach — but we need the help of everyone in the diocese. Every gift, no matter the size, is greatly appreciated and will help support 30 ministries that benefit every parish in the diocese, including ours. 70 percent of any amount we raise over our parish goal is returned to us for our use. This is a great opportunity for us. Thank you to everyone who has already pledged their gift to the 2018 CMAA, and for being a partner in caring to so many in our diocese. For more information about the CMAA before #GivingTuesday, please follow @DOJCMAA on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram or visit jolietdioceseappeal.org.

of Biblical Reflections with Matt Pozen

Tuesday, Dec. 4 Visitation Parish, 7:00 pm Michael Lewandowski, Director of Faith Formation, will

present on the life of St. Isaac Jogues. Isaac was born to a prosperous family in France in 1609. His desire was to bring the Gospel far and wide as a Jesuit missionary. He first ministered among the Hurons in Canada. Fr. Jogues struggled to spread the Gospel in the New World. He bore much suffering and danger, and witnessed terrible torture. However, his zeal and love for souls would eventually bear fruit. Fr. Jogues returned to France after being captured and tortured by the Mohawks. He eventually left France once more to again minister in the New World, where he was martyred. He was canonized in 1930, along with the seven other North American Martyrs.

This is a great way to have your children help those less fortunate (and earn service hours)!
