From the Desk Of Fr. John Merry Christmas…a few days early! There are a few ways to express the joy of this season…coming from different cultures and languages…for example… ‘Feliz Navidad’… ‘Happy Holy Birth.’ We know what it means…whatever the language…the joy of God sending His only be-gotten Son into the world…Jesus…Emmanuel…and Savior of the World. We think of our own political challenges these days preparing for Christmas. We think of the ideal leader of our nation. We are divided as to who and what character our chosen leader should have. There are those who are convinced that this one is the right one…others that this one is the worst one because of his behavior. Now we look to God’s gift and God’s plan and see the ideal King and Ruler of the whole universe…Jesus the Christ. Jesus was born in a very simple family. Je-sus had no wealthy background. Jesus had no political ambition. Jesus came in simplicity and in poverty…but filled with the riches of God’s love…mercy…and justice. Jesus’ very first homi-ly recorded in the Gospel of St. Luke…tells us of Jesus’ own self-awareness…mission…and rela-tionship with God the Father. Jesus read from the Old Testament Prophet Isaiah… ‘The Spirit of the Lord is upon me…He has anointed me…and has sent me.’ These are powerful words…and have real consequence for us now. The les-son is not…do what you want…have it your way…but Jesus was faithful to God’s plan and God’s will. John the Baptist played an essential role in preparing for the coming of Christ. His voice called people to prepare the way of the Lord. It was not a matter of an external act of being washed by water…the baptism in the Jordan River…but something more than that. John chal-lenged those who were the spiritual leaders not to think that they were exempt from conversion…repentance…and a change of heart and life.

So John’s message called for a deeper change and a different kind of preparation to welcome the Kingdom of God. John was not heaping more laws and rules upon the shoulders of the people. John was calling for an authentic way of life that was consistent with a true relationship with God…a right relationship with God and with others. God cared for all of His people…including the poor and sinners. The spiritual leaders needed to see more deeply into their personal lives…not just the public display. What about all the corruption at the temple…in the government…the harm to all the poor of the country? The Kingdom of God cared about them…and intended the leaders to do something about all those issues…but it was not happen-ing…they were not the good shepherd they were called to be. We grow ever closer to the celebration of the Birth of our Savior…Christmas. The lessons of scripture lead us into a deeper reflection upon the mystery we are about to celebrate. This Sun-day we hear from Matthew’s Gospel… ‘This is how the birth of Jesus Christ came about.’ The focus of this lesson from the Gospel teaches us of the real origin of Jesus as God’s Son…and how He fulfills the ancient prophecy of being of the ‘house of David.’ Jesus is conceived…not of human origin…but of Divine origin. Jesus is con-ceived by the Holy Spirit…totally unique. Jesus is human…but He is also Divine! Jesus…a name given Him by the angel in his dream…was given Him by Joseph and the child was claimed by him…making Him authentically of the House of David. Joseph was obedient to the will of God…despite all of the complications…questions…and doubts leading up to his final surrender to God’s will. We might reflect on our own issues and questions when it comes to the living out of our faith. What is God’s will for us? Are we ready to surrender to doing what the Lord calls us to do? How can this Christmas help us see God’s will…and seek to be obedient to Him in all things?

“There are two questions that confront the peo-ple of every place and time, questions that con-front you and me today: Are you satisfied with your life: Are you satisfied with the direction the world is moving in? These are some of life’s in-escapable questions, and we each respond with passionate action or selfish indifference.

“Our collective dissatisfaction with the direction of the world leads to the consensus that the world needs changing. And yet, we seem gripped by exasperation and paralyzed by the false belief that we can’t do anything about it. The saints dispel that exasperation and inspire us to bold action. They remind us over and over again: We can change the world.”

Ss. Peter and Paul Parish will again be giving a Christmas book to each family attending Christmas Eve and Christmas Day Masses. This year’s parish gift is Rediscover the Saints by Mat-thew Kelly. The book continues Matthew’s focus on how we can achieve ho-liness—become saints—one holy moment at a time. We can become saints—we must become saints. Only saints go to heaven. Matthew says we are capable of so much more than we think. “You have no idea what you are capable of. None of us do. God is constantly trying to open our eyes to the amazing possi-bilities that He has enfolded in our being. The saints continue this work, encouraging us to explore all our God-given potential, not with speeches, but with the example of their lives.

Around the Community

Amber is the daughter of our Music Director Nick Robinson and his wife Becky. During 22-year-old Amber Robinson’s senior year at col-lege at Northern Illinois Universi-ty, she knew she wanted to do missionary work but didn’t know where. Today, the Glen Carbon native, who attends Ss. Peter and Paul Parish in Collinsville, finds herself in St. Joseph, Mich., working directly with youth, challenging these vulner-able Catholics “to love Christ and embrace the life of the church.” “I had only been in Michigan for a couple weeks, but quickly met a young adult after Mass,” Robin-son said. “We met up for coffee, and I got to know her. By the end of the conversation, I could tell that she was wanting to go deeper. I invited her into a more intentional discipleship. So, we will be meeting with each other once a week, and I will be going through Scripture with her. I’m so excited to see what the Lord does in her life this year!” Robinson is hoping for more success stories like that as part of her nine-month journey with her NET Ministries (National Evangelization Team) discipleship team. Robinson’s team, which in-cludes other male and female young adults, is serving in a parish and school in St. Joseph, fo-cusing on helping with Confirmation classes, go-ing to school lunches to talk with students about Christ, meeting people for one-on-one spiritual discussions, and working with youth groups. “My campus minister served with NET over 20 years ago and it sounded amazing,” Robinson said. “I then thought back to when I served with Totus Tuus in the Diocese of Springfield in Illi-nois for two summers, and I saw what amazing work the Lord could do during the teen program and it got me excited to do more ministry work. I just want the youth to see the Lord’s love for them.”

Robinson plans on serving with NET for one year, but said, “We will see what the Lord has in store.” As for her advice on how Catholics can become intentional disciples and help others? She says that it first comes down to establishing a relationship with Jesus for ourselves. “If we don’t know who Jesus is in our hearts, we can’t go and give to other people,” Robinson said. “We can’t give what we don’t have. We need to encourage the youth to also get involved be-cause they are the church right

now. Young people often see themselves as the future of the church, but we need them to realize they are the church now. Being a disciple may look different for everyone, but Christ doesn’t call the qualified, he qualifies the called.” Reprinted from the Catholic Times

Amber will be sharing her experiences with NET Ministries with us the week-end of December 28-29 at all masses.

As a celebration of Christ’s coming, Good Shepherd Lutheran Church musicians are presenting a special Christmas cantata fea-turing John Leavitt’s What Child Is This on Sun-day, December 29 at 3 pm. The choir will be ac-companied by member and guest professional instrumentalists. For more information, call 618-344-3451.

Welcome and Christmas Blessings to You and Your Family

Dear Brothers and Sisters: Welcome to all and blessings to you and your family during this holy Christmas season as we celebrate the great joy and happiness of the Lord’s coming. My prayer for all of you is one of gratitude for your faith and love and the spirit of commu-nity we continue to enjoy as we walk together on our discipleship journey. In the renewed spirit of discipleship, we continue to focus on Hospitality, Prayer, Formation and Service. Last year’s and this year’s Christmas books focus on Holy Mo-ments—those times when we set aside our own self-interests and do what God is calling us to do in that moment. Our goal is to become saints, and we can do that one Holy Mo-ment at a time. All of this is the grateful response of a disciple—one who follows Jesus and embraces a new way of life built upon developing a personal relationship with Him through an active prayer life and growing generous hearts. I thank you for your ongoing support and gener-osity to our parish with your time, talents and treasure. As you enter church on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, you will receive our parish gift to parishioner and visitor families—the Matthew Kelly book “Rediscover the Saints,” which can help you grow in your relationship with Jesus through Holy Moments and the examples of the saints’ lives. At all times of the year, but especially during this season, we can reflect on the fact that we…and every person in the world…are loved unconditionally by God. May you treasure this in your heart…and receive and share the peace of Christmas. Peace, Father John
