Congratulations to Mrs Peta Marinoni for organising such a fantastic event! There will be a catering committee meeting for the Interschool Carnival at 9am on Monday 11 Sept in the library and a P & F Meeting at 9am on Monday 18 Sept. Please add these dates to your diaries. Please also note that we will now be hosting the Interschool Carnival at St. Bernard’s due to the condition of the town oval. However, this is a lovely opportunity to showcase our beautiful school. I have recently confirmed with the Education Department In-term Swimming that our students will be participating in swimming lessons in the last two weeks of Term 4 this year (27 Nov to 8 Dec). We will forward on more information as it comes to hand. Learning: We are committed to learning at every level We hope you all enjoyed the extra family time on our student free day on Monday. Staff spent Monday morning interrogating our whole school and cohort data, identifying trends over time to assist us with our planning for 2018. As a result of our data, staff have decided that next year’s whole school focus will be on place value in maths and we will continue to consolidate the implementation of explicit instruction, Spelling Mastery and our new writing programs. This year, class teachers have been working on creating whole school planning documents for mathematics and we continued this work on Monday afternoon. This year’s main focus has been on writing. The Kindy to Year 4 teachers have been enjoying the implementation of the Talk 4 Writing program and on Monday 4 Sept Mrs Sandy Jackson will be participating in a ‘7 Steps for Writing’ course in Perth. This program will follow on nicely from Talk 4 Writing and, once implemented, will ensure that we have effective writing programs in place across the school. At this week’s Professional Learning Community meeting, staff loaded writing samples from common assessment tasks onto the Brightpath program. They then used the Brightpath ruler to plot students writing against a continuum. The Brightpath ruler is equated with the NAPLAN writing scale and the School Curriculum and Standards Authority (SCSA) A to E grades used for reporting. Therefore, this process allows teachers to effectively moderate students writing as well as providing strategies for teachers to move each child’s writing to the next phase of development. Don’t forget to continue to record your child’s reading for our RAM challenge. We will soon be sending home a form for parents to indicate if they expect their child to complete the challenge. This will assist us to order the Ram badges. Engagement: The promotion of positive relationships and the engagement of parents in their child’s learning In the first week of Term 4 (9—13 Oct) we will be having our dance lessons with Debbie Ann from Humphries Dance. Thank you to the P & F who have once again agreed to cover these costs. Each class will have daily dance lessons and we have organised to have an evening dance for parents and students this year instead of the dance assembly. On Friday 13 Oct, families are welcome to bring a picnic lunch from 5pm and Debbie Ann, will lead class dance performances at 5.30pm followed by dancing for everyone. The evening will conclude at 7pm. Please keep this date free—it should be a wonderful night! Debbie Ann has also offered to provide dance lessons for staff and parents one or two evenings after school during dance week. We are seeking expressions of interest so please contact reception if you would like to be involved and let us know whether Monday 9, Tuesday 10 or Wednesday 11 Oct suits you best. School specialist photos (graduation, captains & whole school) that were taken on our school photo day are now available for online ordering. Go to www.academyphoto.com.au, select ‘Products for Parents’ and ‘Order Online’ and enter the shoot key: BTQ75DWQ. The 2017 Kojonup Show is fast approaching (21 Oct). The P & F will once again be running the Chocolate Toss stall and is seeking donations of family sized blocks of chocolate. These can now be sent in to school at any time during the lead up to the show. Accountability: Taking Responsibility for the Quality of our Work Supervision is provided for students from 8.30am on school days. Please ensure that your child is not dropped off before this time as we cannot guarantee that there will be staff onsite prior to 8.30am. Lately we have been noticing students being dropped off as early as 8.10am. Thank you for assisting us to ensure your child’s safety. A reminder to please notify the school by 9am if your child will be absent from school. Discipleship: Living Out the Teachings of Jesus Thank you to everyone who participated in or donated to our St. Bernard’s Day Fair recently. Around $360 was raised to support Flores. Flores is an island off Indonesia, which had no schools or education services. St. Damien’s Catholic Primary School in Dawesville along with several other organisations provide direct and hands on support for the Flores community. For several years now we have been supporting St. Damien’s financially with their efforts in Flores to create schools (the island now has 3), provide school uniforms, art supplies, books and sports equipment. Previously our money has also been used to purchase pigs, cows, ducks and goats. This was aimed at assisting the students of Flores to learn how to farm, care for animals and provide food for the local community. Many thanks and God bless Mrs Siobhan Galos Principal

Education in Faith—A Prayer for Dads and Grandads

If you are Dad or Granddad, you are deserving of blessing and honour for who you are and for all you do. Here is a prayer of blessing for every good work, every good word, and for every act of love you have provided on behalf of the ones you love:

Dear Lord,

Bless every father and grandfather in our community with the best of your blessings today. Let him know he is not alone in the tasks you have given him to provide for and support those under his care. Show him how much you delight in his work, and affirm the value of whatever You have given him to do—both as a father or grandfather and as a child of Yours. Confirm his

worth daily so he has no reason to doubt whether he is loved in the eyes of God and his family.

Create in him a deep sense of trust in You, knowing that He can count on You to help him lead and protect those dependent on

him. Let him know what a difference he has and can make to those around him, no matter how big or small the task.

Watch over him when challenging times push him beyond his limits. Reward him for his faithfulness past, present, and future,

assuring him that true success and satisfaction don’t lie in his accomplishments or accolades, but in his steadfast character.

Teach him how to meet the needs of his child’s life that are within his ability to do so, but help Him to trust You for the rest.

Complete any healing of past hurts or regrets that may interfere with parenting or grand parenting his children. Build in him a

sense of joy, humility, and playfulness that draw his family close.

Today, on special days, and for all the days of his life, fill him with the best of Your blessings, so that one day he will stand

before you and hear Your ultimate words of praise, “Well done, my son, well done!”

Amen

Keep Australia Beautiful Last Thursday all the students participated in a rubbish collection with Jane Kowald NRM/Landcare Officer. They cleaned up the areas
