The National Academy of Needlearts was established in 1985 as an organization devoted to the advancement of embroidery as an art form. Its goal is to uphold the highest standards in the needlearts by providing ex-cellence in education to all those interested in furthering their embroidery skills as teachers, judges, artists, designers, authors, or technically proficient embroiderers.

The Academy maintains its outstanding archival collection of embroidery at the Gregg Museum of Art & De-sign at North Carolina State University in Raleigh, North Carolina.

NAN annually sponsors its Assembly for Embroiderers, which is an unrivaled needlework seminar for stitchers of all skill levels and interests who are members of the Academy.

Teaching needlework can be a solitary activity most of the time: ordering supplies, stitching models, submitting proposals. When teachers get together to talk about what happens in needlework classes, time flies! We want to stay up late to share stories, ideas, and dreams. At NAN’s 2021 Assembly, we are offering an opportunity for needlework teachers to come together and spend time focusing on issues that will further

their development as effective teachers. We propose to build on our collective knowledge about teaching and learning of needle arts, to share innovative ideas and approaches, and to promote relationships within and beyond our teaching community. By working together we hope to promote ideas that will improve the quality of teaching in the broader needlework community. Anyone who considers themselves to be a needlework teacher, whether for a shop or a guild or a local organization, is welcome to attend.

Student to Provide: An open mind and some magazines or pictures for collaging.

Needle minder: 2” Pin cushion: 2¾” x 2” Needle book: 3½” x 3”

Some of my fondest memories are of walking along the beach picking up sea shells. As the waves gently roll in, I search the sandy beach to see what treasure I might discover. Each shell is a mystery, a question of what sea creature once inhabited it.

In this class, you will create your own tidal treasures: a starfish needle minder, a sea urchin pin cushion and scallop needle book.

In the 17th century, variations of the Detached Buttonhole Stitch were used extensively to create many of the flora, fauna and animal motifs that can be found on caskets and mirrors of that period. You will learn some of these same needle lace variations to create the textures found on seashells. Your kit includes the fabric, threads and padding to embroider and finish three small tidal treasures.

Student to Provide: 4” and 6” embroidery hoops, 10” x 10” Evertite frame or stretcher bars with brass tacks and tightening tool, 6” ruler, white tissue paper, tweezers, masking tape, scissors for cutting paper and felt, mechanical pencil or similar, straight pins, cream colored sewing thread, needle threader, and usual stitching supplies. Magnification is highly recommended.

Proficiency Level: All

Kit Cost: $96 Ground: Paper book, Lutradur®

and fabric samples Design Size: Folding book with

5” x 7” pages

Explore the range of textures that are possible by combining stitches, mixed media, and a source of inspiration such as

a poem or quote of the student’s choice. Learn to build up surfaces with color, seal edges, construct layered effects, and deconstruct in various ways to create unusual textures. Materials include Lutradur® (heavy and ultra-light), heat sensitive film, Tyvek®, Angelina fibers and film, PearlEx pigments, an embossing tool, a wood burning tool, fabric paint, and gel media. Safety and archival quality are emphasized. Students can integrate the materials into a folding book (as shown) or leave them as separate works. A book with 5” x 7” pages and workable covers is provided. It can be displayed standing so that both sides may be seen. Its ties provide a closure.

Student to Provide: Usual stitching supplies including a metal thimble, scissors for embroidery, fabric, and paper. For students who wish to work with heat tools, bring a respirator. Details supplied in welcome letter.

Pre-work: None .

105: Ginger JarMargaret Kinsey

Proficiency Level: All

Kit Cost: $85

Ground: Ro

Design Size: 5½” x 7½”

Our Ginger Jar is decorated with wisteria (fuji). Wisteria originally grew wild in the mountains of Japan. Growing in the wild it winds itself around trees. Domesticated, it grows on trellises and is easily contained. When it blooms it form cascades of beautiful purple flowers. If you travel through the south of our country in the springtime, where wisteria was planted in what are now abandoned home places, the wisteria will cover an exten-sive area of trees. It is a beautiful sight to behold.

Our jar with its "tamed" wisteria is worked in Rozashi silks, brocade, and metallic threads. The purples and blue are true to the color palette of the Heian period in Japan.

Student to Provide: Scissors for cutting silk, scissors for cutting metals, thimble, needle threader, beeswax, pencil and paper, light, magnification and dark lap cloth.

106: Art Deco Nine PatchWendy Moore

Proficiency Level: Intermediate

Kit Cost: $130

Ground: Mono canvas, 18 ct

Design Size: 8” x 10”

Into the quilt shop we go, looking for that perfect Art Deco print. Well, here it is – all finished. Utilizing a subtle color palette and including simple stitches like Gobelin, Cashmere, and Mosaic Stitches as well as more complex oblique and composite stitches, students will learn how to make a “perfect circle” on canvas, create a Chottie’s Plaid, and “float” a Squared Herringbone motif. Students will explore

the matte finishes of Mandarin Floss, Impressions, and Soy Luster, the sparkle of Silk Lame’ Braid and Kreinik Braid, and the versatility of Waterlilies over-dyed silk. Have fun stitching these nine areas and the borders, creating a piece designed to fit a standard frame size.

Student to Provide: 12” and 14” stretcher bars, tacks/staples, frame or frame weight, a laying tool and usual stitching supplies.

Pre-work: None.

Inspiration for this piece was found in the beautiful iron work decorations in architecture. The acanthus leaves and arabesque scrolls abound on buildings in the older cities of the United States, Europe, and the world. These metal work designs were my inspiration for this piece.

Join us in creating this beautiful silk and metal thread embroidery, Arabesque in Blue and Gold, a study in techniques of metal thread embroidery with silk. The gold work is a combination of couching and satin stitch work with fly stitch, couching Japan metallic, gilt kid, couching pearl purl and check thread, satin stitch with Japan gold.

206: Once in a Blue MoonToni Gerdes

Proficiency Level: Intermediate Kit Cost: $145 Ground: Mono canvas, 18 ct Design Size: 12” x 8”

When the sun has set and the moon is full over the ocean a special blue cast comes over the earth that is both a little spooky and beautiful at the same time. The second full moon of the month is often referred to as a blue moon. Since this only happens occasionally, the phrase “once in a blue moon” came about. Also, when certain atmospheric conditions occur that cause a blue tint to the moon, it is called a blue moon. This design creates a band sampler of the varying colors of the sky over the fabric appliquéd ocean. The edge of the fabric has couched unraveled Flair to create the ocean foam. The moon is appliquéd Ultra Suede® with colored-pen-cil shading to craft the spooky clouds. The moonlight glow on the moon, ocean, and sky will be fashioned by couching fine Sulky holographic lines throughout the bands and on the fabric.

The Exemplary Challenge 2021

What stitches do you imagine when you see prickly pear cactus, little fuzzy animals, or rough tree bark? Trying to express them in embroidery can be challenging, but also fun. Therefore, our next challenge will be having fun with texture.

Texture draws attention to a composition, giving it depth and form. It can jump out, like fireworks, but not always. It can also be sensuous satin, a delicate fern, or wispy steam from a teacup. Before you dash off in a frenzy of French knots and turkey work, remember restraint, restraint, restraint. Texture can occur in different levels and some unusual ground fabrics might be used, such as silk, burlap, corduroy, or velvet. Think of the change in the feel and character of a concrete sidewalk compared to a bumpy gravel path, or a rocky garden.

Accept the challenge to express texture in embroidery no larger than 12" × 16" following Entry Rules (pages 17-19 and enter your original piece in The Exemplary! Do not forget your Artist Statement about how yourtextural inspiration developed!

The Exemplary is supported in part by the Angel Fund. Since The Exemplary entry fees do not cover all of the exhibit expenses, you can help with your contribution.

Once you start looking, you see texture everywhere!

The Circle Fund is based on the concept of a circle: what goes around comes around. This fund will allow NAN to support scholarships for deserving candidates and graduates. Everyone is welcome to donate to this fund, ensuring that the circle continues .

Donations to the Angel Fund and Circle Fund can be made along with your registration fee payment as indicated on the Registration form, or to contribute online visit:

Teachers' Certification and Programs

Teachers ' Certi.fication

The National Academy of Needlearts Teachers’ Certification Program is a three-year program addressing all aspects of embroidery instruction including the development of teaching and presentation skills, study in design and color, and development of supplemental materials that enhance and support the successful teaching of needleart. The program is suited to either the novice or the experienced teacher of the needlearts who wishes to develop, improve and/or refine her/his instructional skills .

The candidate may select one of two avenues:

Original Design: The candidate designs and develops classes in her/his chosen medium, and compiles a portfolio of original teaching pieces.

Non-Original Design: The candidate, with permission, develops classes when teaching others’ designs, charted designs, painted canvases, etc.

Full certification includes attendance at the annual Teachers’ Certification Workshop held in conjunction with the NAN Assembly for Embroiderers. Book critiques, color and design notebooks, hands-on teaching presentation, and a display of the candidate’s embroidered work at The Exemplary complete the certification process.

The Teachers’ Certification Workshop for 2021 will be held March 18-19 .

Master LevelTeachers’ Certification Master Level is for certified teachers who wish to expand their education by attending color and/or design and judging classes, and by designing an intermediate/advanced class and an expertise piece. In addition to writing a magazine article reflecting an interest in the need-learts field, candidates give a presentation on their expertise piece at the NAN Teachers’ Certification Workshop.

The ExemplaryThe Exemplary showcases excellence in needlework and the intermediate steps in its accomplishment. It is an opportunity for everyone to show achieve-ments, teach and learn by example, share and find camaraderie as each strives for personal growth. It is a venue of needleart, a display of relevant embroidery subjects, and the place where those enrolled in our certification programs exhibit their artistic work.

Entries to the 2021 Virtual Exemplary will be posted - along with artist statements - to the NAN websitein a separate gallery, like those of past year'sribbon winners already on the site.

Eligibility & Entry Rules

1 . Each entry must be embroidery: i.e., created with a threaded needle.

2 . Each entry must be the work of the entrant and have been completed within the last three years.

3. Each entry must have the title, entrant’s firstand last name, address, and telephone numberfirmly attached to the back of the piece.

4. Each entry must be properly registered andreceived by the deadlines listed on page 19.

5 . Entry fee: With no cost for room or display rental, there is no entry fee this year. However, donations are much appreciated. Your support will help with website expenses and assist in our efforts to bring needle art to a larger audience. Donations may also be made on the website.

There will be no judges, critiques, nor photography of the pieces in 2021 due to the virtual showing.

However, please review the following suggestions for taking and submitting a photograph of your wonderful entries.

1. Try to photograph in natural daylight where the light is in a brightly lit room and you can avoid shadows on your work.

2. Either lay your piece flat on the floor (on a towel or something) or on a wall and hold your phone or camera so that it is level with your piece and try to fill the viewfinder with as much of the needle art as you can - we want to see your beautiful piece -- not your wall!

3. When you email your entry to Gail, send the full size file and please include the title, etc. in the email. If you are comfortable renaming the file, name it with your name and the title.

By submitting your entry into the virtual Exemplary, the Academy has been granted permissions to use the images of your pieces for educational and archival purposes and for use on the Academy website and Facebook page, and in NANthology.

2021 Assembly for Embroiderers

Awards

There will be NO judged nor Board awards, due to the inability to properly judge pieces in a virtual environment. We may consider, if we can accommodate such, to have a Popular Choice Award to the piece with the most nominations from our members and the public.
