TRANSCRIPT

The former provost and vice-president, academic, of

the University of Maine at Farmington (UMF) joined the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus as Dean on August 1, 2011.

An ardent advocate for the liberal arts, Dean Berger desires that the education of the whole person be accessible to those wanting to pursue it. He prizes

Augustana’s focus on undergraduate teaching and believes that a residence-based campus is the best place for this focus. Berger began his career as a cultural anthropologist. As a full-time administrator since the mid-‘90s, he

has served in the cabinets of five presidents at three post-secondary institutions. He is driven by the opportunity to galvanize a faculty and a staff around a vision, to enhance quality and excellence, and to

be an agent of change for the good of all. Dr. Berger holds a Ph.D. and Master’s Degrees from

Columbia University and a Bachelor’s Degree from the University of Chicago. Highly praised as an ar-dent advocate for the liberal arts and academic rigor, he made the choice to move from a career in private liberal arts colleges to public liberal arts institutions,

out of his desire that education of the whole person be accessible to those wanting to pursue it. In the last 10 years at UMF, as chief academic officer,

Dr. Berger led innovative initiatives that revamped and improved programs and processes. These improvements contributed to UMF’s prominence in the State of Maine in education quality, student experience, financial matters, and profile advancement. Dr. Berger has also been active in the Council of Public Liberal Arts Colleges (COPLAC), an American Council, which champions the cause of liberal arts of superior quality in the public sector, where he

served as Program Director. Augustana is the only Canadian member of COPLAC. Berger looks forward to maintaining the close relationships between Augustana Campus, the University of Alberta, the City of Camrose and our surrounding communities. He remains committed to the strong ethic of community service that informs so many of Augus-

tana’s programs.

The University of Alberta, Augustana Vikings

marked the end of the first week of classes with

their third Annual Vikings Golf Tournament in sup-

port of the Brett Binder Scholarship Fund. Com-

munity members, sponsors, coaches, alumni,

family and friends played 18 holes of golf under a

beautiful sunny sky. Teams played a Las Vegas

style scramble where with the toss of a dice

teams could end up using their worst tee shot or

with the luck of the draw their best. A nice day on

the links was made complete with a delicious

steak dinner prepared by Garvin’s Restaurant.

This year’s winners of the tournament were

Hockey Assistant Coach Paul King, Goaltender

Colin Stebner, Hockey Alumni Darcy Hofield, and

Bret Krokosh with a score of 54.

―The Vikings golf tournament in support of

the Brett Binder scholarship fund is part of our

initiative to create more scholarship opportunities

for our athletes. The day was a tremendous suc-

cess, supported by golfers from as far away as

Cochrane, under perfect skies approximately

$10,000 was raised for the Vikings‖ stated Ath-

letic Director, Greg Ryan post tournament.

Vikings Athletics would like to thank all

those involved in the tournament for their support

through our silent auction, raffle auction, and for

a great day of golf!

Balancing the books…

Sleep, eat, classes, group projects, studying, team practice, strength training, travel, competi-

tion, eat, sleep, repeat…

Not all days are like this, but our student-athletes, on average, dedicate 21 hours a week to

training and performing in their chosen sport. Add in weekend travel to competitions, athletic

therapy, and involvement in community initiatives and there is little to no time remaining to

take on part-time jobs to offset the costs of

attending university.

Financial assistance is crucial to the continuation of the proud tradition of sporting and aca-

demic excellence at Augustana. Invest in our athletes and their dreams will become reality.
