VIKING CLOTHES AND JEWELLERY

MENS CLOTHING

Men wore leather ankle boots/shoes or more rarely knee boots. They wore thick woollen trouser held up with a tie usually criss-cross with strips of leather or cloth. Men wore a long shirt or under tunic, this was followed by a thick over tunic made of the same material usually wool drawn in by a belt. The belt was decorated by a buckle which was a display of wealth. At the other end of the belt was a decorated belt end. On his belt a man would wear a leather pouch often decorated with runic symbols or other designs in which he kept his personal possessions. He would also carry both an eating knife and a working knife which was a basic tool and in an emergency the first weapon.

They also wore a thick cloak pinned with a big brooch.They wore leather or fur hats for extra protection.

WOMENS CLOTHING

Women wore a long dress of linen or wool with a double apron front and back which was pinned in position at the shoulders by brooches. They too wore belts at the waist which they hung their keys on as they were the house key holders. The shoes that they wore were softer and lower around the ankle. Sometimes they were made out of sealskin the fur offering waterproof protection.

JEWELLERY

The vikings loved jewellery. It was worn by both men and women as a display of wealth. The jewellery was made of copper, bronze, silver or gold. They would wear necklaces of amber and/or coloured glass beads. The glass was imported from Germany to melt and recycle into beautiful glass beads. Here are a few examples on our next slide.
