The Vikings Cross County and Biathlon teams continued with their incredible season, medaling in every event they entered at the Canadian Birkebeiner. Andrew Brisbin and Kieran Baird challenged all of their competition in the 55 Km premiere event placing 1

st and 2

nd respectively. It was a hard fought battle

right to the finish where they edged out Alex Mahoney of the Rocky Mountain Racers. Maja Zimmerman placed second winning a silver medal in the women’s 55 Km premiere event. Not bad for a first time long distance Birkebeiner. In the 31 Km men’s event, Hans Asfeldt finished at the top of the podium having a strong performance. In the 31 Km women’s event, Kalli Green and Lauren Brookes placed 1

st and 2

nd re-

spectively. They raced together the whole way, and in Lauren’s words Kalli showed her strength with her “monster double poling”. Biathlete Betsey Mawdsley rounded out the podium finishing 3

finished 3rd

in the junior women’s 31 km event. Biathlete Ryan Burlingame continued his excellent sea-son by winning the 13 km men’s event. Johanna Ferrie placed 2

nd in the women’s 13 Km event. Con-

gratulations to all of our athletes who raced the gruelling distances at the Canadian Birkebeiner includ-ing: Joel Gervais and Alex Frost who raced the 55Km event and Nellie Dow who raced the 31 km event.

This week, two Vikings are leaving for Europe to compete at the World Championships. Andy Pohl is going to Switzerland where he will train for a few days before heading to Erzurum Turkey to compete in the World Under 23 Cross Country Skiing Championships. Keely MacCulloch is travelling to Finland for the Biathlon World Junior Championship.

This week it was also announced that the coaches Joan and Hans Skinstad will be leading the Ca-nadian University Biathlon Team to the 2013 World University Games in Slovenia.

This past weekend, Carly Sheill raced in her first international competition at the IBU Cup held in

Canmore. She qualified for Team Canada to race at the home IBU Cup on the weekend of February 4th

and 5th.

Balancing the books… Sleep, eat, classes, group projects, studying, team practice, strength training, travel, com-petition, eat, sleep, repeat… Not all days are like this, but our student-athletes, on average, dedicate 21 hours a week to training and performing in their chosen sport. Add in weekend travel to competitions, athletic therapy, and involvement in community initiatives and there is little to no time re-maining to take on part-time jobs to offset the costs of attending university. Financial assistance is crucial to the continuation of the proud tradition of sporting and academic excellence at Augustana. Invest in our athletes and their dreams will become reality. This past weekend the men took on the Lethbridge Kodiaks in their only game this weekend. The men played a hard fought game but came up short in the end with the Rattlers defeating the Vikings 101-95. The team is coming up on the end of their regular season and Coach Drabiuk had this to say about their final weekend of regular season play: “For those trying to follow along at home ... We need SAIT to lose it's remaining game vs MRU and king's to win no more than 1 of its games vs GMU this weekend AND we need to win 1 of our remaining 2 games vs NAIT to qualify for a wildcard playoff birth. This weekend will be a pair of exciting nail biter games Saturday night we'll sell you the whole seat - but you'll only use the edge of it!” The Vikings will need your help so come wearing your Vikings Red and bring your Vikings spirit in the Augustana Gymnasium!

Page 9: Vikings Monday

This past weekend the women played the Lethbridge Kodiaks and played another fast paced game right till the end. The Kodiaks managed to clinch the win 71-65. This one game loss did not move the Augustana women out of the third spot in the North. With the regular season coming to and end this weekend the team can look back on a year of athletes on the stats leader board as leading the league in some stats. This year the Vikings Women broke the ACAC rebounding re-cord this season with 68 rebounds. Stay tuned for more news as the team looks to head into their second year in the playoffs. Come cheer on the women this weekend as they take on the NAIT Ooks.

This past weekend the Vikings took on Calgary rivals the SAIT Trojans. The men played at home Friday night in front of a excited Max McLean crowd. The men played a high energy game scoring a total of 6 goals over the Trojans who only scored 2. The Vikings scored on 3 of their 6 power play opportunities. The team leads the league in power play goals. Coach Gusdal had this to say about the “emotional roller coaster weekend” games: "We did everything we set out to do in Friday night's 6-2 home victory and then put our-selves exactly where we wanted to be in Saturday's return match when we were tied 2-2 with just over 20 minutes to go........ But, the end result was not what we were striving for as we gave up 5 straight goals against the Trojans and had to settle for the split.” The Vikings still sit in second in the league which is where they want to remain after this weekends final regular season game versus the Concordia Thunder. “Now, we'll re-group, re-focus, and take care of business this coming weekend against Concordia as we are all alone in 2nd place and our goals still remain to finish with 20 wins this season and place in the top 2 where we'll get a first round play-off bye and home-ice advantage in the ACAC semi-finals. See you at the EnCana Saturday evening!" said Coach Gusdal. Home game Saturday, February 18th at 7:30 in the EnCana Arena.

This past weekend the men took on the Medicine Hat Rattlers in a weekend home game double header. Friday game was a very important game for the team as a win dictated whether the team moved onto the playoff qualification weekend. The team was able to pull out a win after they took the Rattlers to five sets. “I was very pleased with our overall performance on Friday night. We didn't want to leave it to the last regular season game to have to fight for a playoff spot, so we played pretty hard” said coach Tigchelaar. With the playoffs in clear view on Saturday afternoon the team went into Saturday game a little more relaxed. “On Saturday we were pretty much on cruise control, and it looked like we were just playing out the regular season.” Ending on a loss to the Rattlers the team will look to make some improvements this week in preparation for the qualification weekend. “We didn't play with a lot of emotion. Now we have to turn that around and get geared up for SAIT in a best of 3 series. With each team winning 3-0 at home, I hope it will be a good series for both teams.” said coach Tigchleaar. The Vikings Men’s Volleyball team will take on the SAIT Trojans in Calgary Thursday night, and will be at HOME FRIDAY FEBRUARY 17 at 7:00PM in the Augustana Gymnasium. This will be the first time that men’s volleyball has made the ACAC playoff rounds in only their second year in the league.

This past weekend the women’s team rounded out their regular season with two home games versus the Medicine Hat Rattlers. With the season at its end coach Leggit had this to say: “The weekend was good, very encouraging and managed to take a game on Friday night from Med Hat who are ranked 7th nationally. The team played well both days, which at one point included 5 rookies on the floor. We have had some outstanding athletes commit to our program next year and the future looks bright for this program. I'm ex-cited with the direction this program is taking.” Stay tuned for news and results as some of the women take part in this years U21 Team.

Fort McMurray, Alberta - If you took the entire population of Daysland and Worsley, Alberta and invited them to come watch Taryn Story and Kelsey Lund play the sport they both love, you could comfortably sit them in a gym that seats 1,000 fans and still have lots of room left over.

Story, from Daysland and Lund from Wosley, are small town heroes in the big time game of basketball playing for the Augustana Vikings in the Alberta Colleges Athletic Conference.

Coming off of a 107-46 win against the host Keyano Huskies last weekend in Fort McMurray, we got up with the two hoopsters.

Lund, a 18 year-old rookie, who had showed her amazing ambidexterity by hitting right hand and left hand jumpers from close in with a style that was reminiscent of pro superstars Oscar Robertson and George McGinnis...names that have probably no meaning to her but are mentioned by this writer to her as a compli-ment...thanked her coaches from over the years for guiding her marksmanship.

“My coaches always stressed that you should use both hands,” said the 6-foot forward who picked up the sport in Grade 4. “No one ever tried to change the way I shoot.”

Lund, who is averaging 14.65 points per game and 9.00 rebounds per game for the 10-7 Vikings, says she is happy to be playing for the small college which is located in Camrose.

“Coming from a small town (131 people) Augustana just felt right because it is a small campus and as a team we are really close…like a family.”

Lund, who has had a game high of 27 points versus Mount Royal Cougars, agreed when asked if the Vi-kings are a team of the future due to the fact that they have seven rookies.

“We have been a rebuilding program the last few years but down the line we will have a really good team if we stick together. Our goal is still an ACAC championship and nationals but if not this year...next year.”

One of the leaders of this championship calibre team is third-year guard Story.

Story is sitting in a wheelchair for this interview as she sprained her ankle in the final minutes of the game and had to be assisted off the court.

The 5-foot-9 Story, averaging 19 ppg with a game high 29 versus Lakeland, remains upbeat despite her injury.“It doesn’t appear as bad as I thought it was at first,” said Story smiling. “It should be OK.”

Of her leadership qualities she stated: “I am very outgoing and outspoken and if I have something to say I will share it with them. I have good leadership ability and leading by example...hopefully they will follow if I do it correctly.”

Story plans to play two more years in Vikings uniform and says she hopes to get into coaching basketball

following her career at Augustana.

Why did you choose to attend Augustana?

What has been your best moment playing for the Vikings? Do you have any rituals or superstitions?

Where do you draw your inspiration from?

What are you looking to accomplish in your time at Augus-

Who has been your biggest influence in your life thus far?

What has been the biggest accomplishment in sport?

What is the best advice you were ever given?

What is your favourite type of music/band?

What is your favourite food to eat before a game?

I like the fact that when you come to Augustana you are able to get a University of Alberta degree. That

was my primary reason. I also liked that the campus was close to my home town and that Camrose is not Ed-

monton. I am not a huge fan of large campuses.

This is really difficult to label one person as my most influential since I have so many people in my life. I

wish I was joking but every time I type a single person’s name into this I realize that there is another person who

has influenced just as much. My dad, though there are many times when I think he doesn`t know what he`s talk-

ing about, has proved to me that he is wise. My cousin, Melissa, has always been there for me and whenever I

feel like giving up she forces me to reconsider.

My biggest accomplishment so far would be not giving up. It is so easy to just quit when things get tough

then to persevere. The things that I have learned by further my experience in basketball has surpassed greatly

from my high school knowledge. I enjoy being able to go to younger players and help them get better by teach-

ing them what I know.

This security guard told my cousin and I that if your boyfriend ever hurts you get out of that relationship ASAP

because there is always a way out. That isn’t really relevant for basketball but still there are always options. For

basketball though it would have to be that you need to always play like you are going to score.

From recent memory, I think one of the best moments playing for the Vikings was the second game in Keyano a

week or so ago. This was because our team was playing quite well together. It made that game one of the most enjoy-

able. We got all our team members on the court and everyone contributed. It made me feel proud that we were able to

work so well as a team.

Not overly. I do enjoy watching Remember the Titans before games though. It is just one of those

movies that has great music and is pretty inspiring. I never watch the car crash in it before the game

though. That part is a little too sad.

I love oranges. They have the right juice to substance ratio. Obviously this isn’t the

pregame meal but it is delicious close to the game.

I like the majority of music. It all depends on what mood I am in. I prefer country for when

I am eating breakfast though since then you don’t get any surprises or startled by screaming

music. In country music you know the basic story line.

I like to prove people wrong when they doubt me. I get inspired when my team is putting their hearts out there during

which makes me want to play my absolute best. I guess initially I am inspired from within myself but then that inspiration is fu-

elled by my team members.

I like to see what variety of events I can do around campus. I am doing a decent job at trying

things out. I hope to encourage other people to try random things even though they are not in your

comfort zone. In the sense of basketball, I hope to help pass down my knowledge to my team-

mates as well to younger players who come to our camps. Learning a skill is great but being able

to teach someone else and for them to get it is even better.

Boy has the past week been an exciting one. Hockey, basketball and volleyball all having a home game, it felt like super weekend all over again. Playoffs were on the line for some and a chance to get a bye for others. All in all, it was an exciting weekend, proving once again that we are the toughest road trip in the ACAC for any opponent. Some sights and sounds... -Couldn't have asked for a better showing for the final regular season matches for volleyball, the crowd was fantastic. A great mix of students, locals, and family, it was rocking, especially Friday night. Kudos once again to Dave Shantz, Shayne Bruney, and Lee Danderfer; the best fans I have ever seen. Can't wait to see what happens during playoffs. -Speaking of those three, Friday's match produced one of the strangest fan situations I have ever seen. A parent from the other team took offence to Shantzy sporting a parachute while running along the stands and decided to step in. Never seen a parent do something like that, especially when there was nothing warranting her actions. The reaction she received from the crowd summed up everyone's feeling towards her. Memorable stuff. -Along with the crow, there was also some pretty good volleyball that night. The girls played well against the top ranked team in the province, taking a set, and the guys managed to clinch their first playoff spot, riding a pair of breakout performances from Matthew Yoder and Andrew Kaliel, the latter coming off the bench in a big way posting 9 kills in 2 sets. -A fact some may not know about Friday is that there were 2 Vikings volleyball club grads on Medicine Hat's roster, Kris Woods from Oin and Rosalind native Joel Kotyk. Add Yoder, Cole McCartney, Mike Smook, Mark Wilms, and Brendan Lehman from our own Vikings and we had a solid reunion. -The basketball squads didn't fair as well, both losing very tight, but it has been fun to watch both teams this year. Guys were inches from being in the playoffs and the girls are primed to do well once they begin. -If the hockey team gets it done this weekend against Concordia, it will be the first time they have finished ahead of SAIT and the first time they clinched a bye into the final four while un-der coach Gusdal. Nice work guys. -In recent weeks the Vikings Biathlon team has reached new heights in the with two student athlete representing Team Canada and the Vikings on the international stage. Keely Mac-Culloch will be attending the World Junior Championships in February and Carly Shiell is currently in Canmore taking part in the first Canadian International Biathlon Cup Race. Hope to see you all out this weekend as basketball and hockey finish up the regular season and men's volleyball takes on SAIT in playoffs. Take care.
