We hereby present three newly discovered pictures of the Rebbe from Tamuz 21, 5721 [1961].These pictures were taken at a unique farbrengen, which also served as a “welcome” to the 118
passengers of the first chartered flight from the UK. This farbrengen started at 3:30am!This historical event is detailed in “My Encounter with the Rebbe” Volume One,
by the Kallahs grandfather, Reb Schneur Zalmon Jaffe vWg.

sat with them and on Sunday afternoon my mother came. Do NesheiChabad arrange for such things? Yes. But we have friends we could
leave our children with.
To me: When are you going to South Africa? At the beginning of
August. For how long? Three and a half to four weeks. Does thisinclude travel time? I plan to arrive in Johannesburg for Shabbos
Chazon and I return about four weeks later. I thought of possibly going
through Eretz Yisroel. What, to be at ohausev ,unuen (the holy places)? The student I came here with for Yud Shvat is going to to the Yeshiva in
Kfar Chabad [in Israel] that week. Is he leaving from NY? Probaly from
Paris and he asked me to come with him. On your way to South Africaor on the way back? He is going to Yeshiva the last week of July. I
thought of seeing if I can arrange to go then. I would ask ,uar from the
sxun - Rabbi Nachman Sudak has already agreed, but I must still ask
Rabbi AD Sufrin as far as school goes. If all ohhbumhj ohbhbg will be in place,
I thought I would then ask the Rebbe...?

about my upcoming birthday: About your birthday, givetzedoka on Friday [my birthday this year is on Shabbos]before Mincha and have an aliyah (being called up to theTorah) sometime on Shabbos. And when you speak [at theShabbaton], you should speak with more energy, as it isyour birthday and mazolo gover (your mazal is assertive)so the divrei hisorerus (inspiring words) will be receivedbetter, you should put yourself into it more on that day asit can have a better effect.About Newark3 you will need to find out more details. TheRebbe mentioned that: the bochurim there are younger andyou’d have to find out if there’s a suitable chavrusa(learning partner) there for you, after which, you shouldask someone of the hanhola (yeshiva directors) over herewhat to do.
About your inyonei haklal4 (communal work): Since whatyou’ve been doing until now is with permission of thehanholas hayeshiva, you should continue the same in thefuture.
(G-d Almighty should give you a sucseesful year in yourTorah study and fulfilling the Mitzvos with true innerenergy, and with joy and a good heart. You should havesucess in working with yourself and working with othersand with your davening (prayers)...)

ucgcus, v,pkv/////3Rabbi Pinye Korf - a mashpiah(mentor) in the Yeshiva inNewark - had offered to be mychavrusa (learning partner) fornigleh in the afternoons andsometimes for chasidus. Hesuggested I write about that whenI go into Yechidus.
4I asked how much I should beinvolved in kllal [communal]work, if what I’ve been doinguntil now is correct and should Ibe doing more or less.

The Rebbe asked me about my sister in Minnesota1: Whatdoes she write? What mood is she in? How is sheadjusting to the first time she’s gone away in this manner?
About your brothers2: Get a second person, your brother-in-law if you want, to speak to your brother about not goingto college. If he hears the same nusach [version] from twodifferent people it would have a better effect because ofkoach horabim. Try and get both brothers into kllal(communal) work i.e. mesibos Shabbos etc., and bring oneof your brothers at a time on your week-end shlichus. Theydon’t have to speak there the first time, but when they’llhear the words inspiring people to Torah and Mitzvos itmay have an effect on them too and interest them inspreading chassidus and yiddishkeit. How old are they? 17 and 18. That which was suggestedbefore is a good idea. I asked if they may know that this“idea” originates from the Rebbe. The Rebbe answered:“Farvos nit? Nor zei darfen nit vissen die kavoneh in dem -areintzufiren tifer.” (Why not? But they do not need toknow the intention behind it, to draw them further in.)When they go with you to a place which could have anadverse effect they don’t have to go, dos heist tzu a collegedarfen zei zicher nit gein (meaning that to a college campusthey definitely shouldn't go). But when you go to a city -like when you went to Passaic and Far Rockaway - theycan accompany you and if it’s a city and a college, itdepends on the “atmosphere.”I asked which brother-in-law should talk to them. The Rebbe said: It could be both since both would probablyspeak against going to college. No?I answered: “Probably.” I then asked the Rebbe what if mybrother-in-law talks to them about a non chassidishe Yeshiva. The Rebbe answered: The ikar (main point) is theyshouldn’t go to college. The Rebbe then went on to talk

*The notes of this Yechidus weretaken from a letter written to mychaver, Rabbi Asher Zelingold, afew days after the Yechidus tookplace. Rabbi Zelingold - who todayis a shliach and rov in S. Paul, MN- was at that time a bochur-shliachstudying in Brunoy, France.
1Mindy Feller (married to MosheFeller). They had just recentlymoved to Minnesota on shlichus(as the Rebbe’s emissaries).
2I had written in my noteinforming the Rebbe that I’d bein Buffalo this Shabbos, which ismy birthday and of my less thanperfect spiritual level/ I also wrotea general report on how I hadbeen working on my two youngerbrothers, that after high school, they should remain in Yeshiva allthe time, and that my brother-in-Law, Rabbi Aharon Zuckerman, suggested to me that my brotherChaim go out of town to learn ina Yeshiva.

gave an explanantion on the connection of tefillin and thefeet, but Yaakov couldn’t remember the details).
The Rebbe: When you are at Penn State, you should conveythe message of Purim and its two mitzvos1 to your friendsthere. They are easy, and might seem small, but are stillimportant.
To understand this: Moshe Rabeinu was the ultimate indaas (knowledge) and a thirteen year old American whoknows almost nothing is very low in daas. Yet, theygleichen zich ois (are equals) in two things. 1. Maaseh(action): both have an equal obligation to wear tefillin, etc.2. Emunah (faith): Moshe Rabeinu needs emunah as muchas a kid. As great a level as one can attain with taamvodaas (knowledge and reason), Hashem is still higher, and you need emunah. Similarly, just like the greatest andlowest must equally be m’vatel (submit, abnegate)themselves to Hashem, so too, the biggest and smallestmitzvos are equally vital in the detail of bitul horotzon (self-abnegation). The two mitzvos of Purim, no matter howsmall they seem, are vital. Those mitzvos also have a deep spiritual significance. Theyrepresent the unity of all Jews from ohgr (friends) [“gifts offood from friend to friend”], “friend” represents someoneclose in spirituality to iuhct (poor) [“and presents to thepoor”], and “poor” represents the strongest nuance todescribe a destitute one who lacks everything.
On Thursday night Rabbi Chodakov asked me to tell him overwhat I heard from Yaakov about his yechidus. When we werealready at Penn State, on Friday afternoon, I received a longdistance call from Rabbi Chodakov. He said that he asked theRebbe Shlita and had confirmed the two points about tzedokabefore tefillin, (but that the Rebbe did not repeat theconnection,) and about Moshe Rabeinu and the kid.
1This was the year when theRebbe began a massivecampaign to encourage peopleto fulfill two of the Purimmitvos: Mishloach Monos(sending gifts to a friend) andMatonos Loevyonim (givinggifts to poor people).

The Rebbe: Good evening Mr. “Chanukah.”The Rebbe asked how he’s progressing, if he understandsYiddish and if he listens to any shiurim (lessons) in theYeshiva, etc. The Rebbe: How do you like the yeshiva? You needn’tanswer if you don’t want on this.Yaakov Hanoka: I don’t mind answering, but I don’t want towaste the Rebbe’s time. I am convinced that coming to yeshivawas the right thing, and I have no regrets for the move Imade. The Rebbe: How are you doing financially? - You needn’tanswer on this either - I don’t believe in asceticism - it’snot chassidus.YC: So far I still have some money. I can tutor college boyswhen I am out of money. I am not worried about money. The Rebbe (with a smile): You must feel like a pioneer.YC: I don’t like to be an example. I don’t yet feel fit torepresent what they expect of me.The Rebbe: When you go to Penn State tomorrow forShabbos, act yourself. This Shabbos you must not act likewhat’s expected from you for next Sunday. On the otherhand, Monday should not be like Sunday, but better.Convey to the students your true feelings, and don’t beafraid that it might be merachek them (chase them away ordistance them). Don’t lead them to believe that you lackanything as a result of coming to yeshiva. And as for beingan example, it’s not your choice! Every Jew, by virtue ofmattan torah (giving of the Torah), is automatically -whether frum or not, whether aware or not - an example tothe world. This is one of the reasons for Anti-Semitism. Sodon’t feel bad about being an example, because you areone whether you like it or not.
Yaakov had been having trouble with his feet. The Rebbe toldhim: Give tzdokah before putting on tefillin. (The Rebbe also

For some time now YaakovHanoka has been invited toPenn State University for aShabbaton with his friendsthere. Finally, the hanhola gavehim permission to go togetherwith me for Shabbos ParshasPikudei. A week and halfbefore we were to leave, hewrote in a tzetel to the Rebbeasking for advice and a brochoon the trip. He did not receiveany answer. The evening before we left,Thursday night, after maariv,Rabbi Chodakov told him thatthe Rebbe tWyhka wouldanswer his tzetel in person, heshould go into yechidus thatnight. He went in to yechidusat 9:00 and came out sometime after 9:30.
