NumeracyThis term the children will complete their learning about fractions and move into the linked area of decimals. They will be learning the decimal equivalents of some common fractions and will also be rounding and comparing decimals. This learning will link to division as the children divide some numbers by 10 or 100 to identify it’s new value as a decimal. As with other areas of maths, they will solve problems and puzzles.Mrs Pennington will complete her work on geometry.

It is really important that you continue to support your children with their number bonds and times tables homework recall. Regular practice has a huge impact on the children’s progress. Being able to recall these facts without using their fingers will really help them this term.

LiteracyThis term we will be finishing reading Varjak Paw by S.F. Said.

We might then move on to reading ‘Krindlekrax’ by Philip Ridley.

We will be using subordinating conjunctions to write more complex sentences and looking at the order of words and clauses within sentences and how this changes the impact of the sentences. We will be extending further our understanding of different word groups – nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs and pronouns– and writing definitions for new words. We will be focussing on using different sentence openers including adverbs and verb starters. We will be continuing to develop our use of speech punctuation, as well as ensuring our use of other punctuation is consistent.

ScienceIn Term 5, we will look at biodiversity and how animals and plants rely on each other, including in our in our school grounds. We will be creating food chains answering the question ‘How do animals and plants rely on each other?’

____________________________Learning EnquiryWe will complete learning about the Ancient Greeks.

Wednesdays. Please make sure your child’s PE kit is in school every day in case of last minute changes to the timetable.

Because we will be practising for Sports Day, it is important that your child has their PE kit in school every day.

Homework Reading logs need to be

signed each time a child reads at home.

Children reading 20 or more times during the term will receive a reward at the end of term. It is important that reading logs are in school every day because the children will need to show them to an adult in class in order to fill in our class chart which shows how many times they have read at home for this term. They will only be able to fill our chart in for the current week, no back dating!

Spellings will be tested on Tuesdays.

Homework, including spellings, will be given out on Thursdays and will be due back by the following Tuesday. It will be stuck into homework books.

Please help your child to practice their number bonds and their times tables regularly. The children will get regular tests on times tables.

Please help your child to remember these routines – thank you.

It is vital that the children learn to spell more accurately because this has a big impact on the ‘level’ which they are assessed at. They need to be able to spell well in a test but also in their everyday writing. Please support them to learn the words on the Year 1 / 2 or Year 3 /4 list which will be sent home again soon and will be tested termly.

At the end of Term 4, the children who had proof in their log and had ticked on our chart to show that they read at home enough times, received an end of term treat. Thank you to the people who supported them at home!

We are also still in a good position within the school for the class which has made the most active ways to get to school. Daily, the children complete an online travel tracker and earn badges if they walk, scoot, cycle or combine a large part of their journey by walking with a shorter distance by car or bus.

reading book and reading log in their book bag in school every day.

Please remember to sign and date your child’s reading log when you have heard them read.

It would be helpful if children could have some sort of ‘apron’ to protect their clothes when they do ‘craft’ type activities.

Please make sure that all of your child’s clothing is named. It is easy to return found jumpers and coats if they are named but un-named clothing does not always find its way back to the owner.

Please help your child follow the school rules about wearing uniform and jewellery – see the school website.

The warm weather is coming and your child can bring several bottles of water into school. If it is in a sports cap plastic bottle they can keep it in the classroom. Other plastic bottles can be kept in the box outside class. Fizzy drinks are not allowed in school and squash should only be part of your child’s packed lunch.

Don’t forget to look at the new-look academy website.
