Newsletter Number 14 27th May 2015 Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Cheltenham Primary School Thank you all for a wonderful week in education, last week. The school was abuzz with visitors to our Open Morning on Tuesday, culminating in a magnificent performance for our Grandparents, families and special friends in the Hall. Many thanks to Helen Griffiths and the children in the School Band and to Chris Day and Holly Smith for their efforts with the Junior School Choir; who sang with joy and enthusiasm. Thank you to Carol Kozlowski for the beautiful visual displays of children’s artworks throughout the school. Finally thank you to our extraordinary team of teachers for sharing their classroom learning environments with our extended community. Given the inclement weather, we had an excellent response to our Information Evening for prospective Prep parents on Wednesday night. Thank you to our many speakers that promoted the programs and curriculum at Cheltenham along with Margaret McIntosh and myself; David Senior, Doris Holley, Ellen Hollowood, Carol Kozlowski, Alana Gadsby and Kathryn Shields for the PTFA. The highlight of the evening for me (as I mentioned to the school at Monday’s assembly), was when our two School Captains, Beth B. and Lachie B. spoke so movingly about their experience as Cheltenham Primary School. Moments like this are special in school life and should always be celebrated. Please enjoy reading an excerpt from each of the children’s speeches: Beth B.

Dear Parents, Students and Friends of Cheltenham Primary School

Thank you all for a wonderful week in education, last week.

Please enjoy reading an excerpt from each of the children’s speeches:

Beth B.…when I first came to Cheltenham I was a bit scared but as soon as I walked through the doors I got a lovely warm welcome that made me settle in on the first day. I love that the teachers are so funny and all get along well. Cheltenham has taught me many lifelong skills…how to become a leader, for example I remember in Years 1 and 2 speaking in front of 400 people at assembly.

We are very lucky at Cheltenham to have a kitchen classroom and a garden where we get our fresh herbs, vegetables, fruit and eggs from the chickens. I talk to a lot of my friends from other schools and they are not so lucky to have a kitchen at their school! Now I am helping mum in the kitchen.

One of my favourite things about Cheltenham is the school concerts. I was very lucky to be one of the main characters in the Junior School Concert this year. It was really fun working with the adorable Preps, Ones and Twos and I gained even more confidence on how to perform in front of so many people…

My second home, Cheltenham Primary, will be very hard to leave at the end of the year

but I have new one waiting and so do you.

Lachie B.…I have been coming to Cheltenham Primary School for 7 years and I have enjoyed every moment…

We are provided with the opportunity to represent the school playing in a variety of sports against other schools in our local area. One of the highlights for me this year was that our swimming freestyle relay came third in the State. We have had the same boys relay team since Year 3 and Cheltenham Primary School has taught me that training hard and persistence pays off.

The school has an excellent Prep Buddy program. I think that it provides a good chance for the younger students to learn from the more experienced kids.

Last year in Year 5 I was lucky enough to be a buddy to Izzy. We had heaps of fun together. This year my Prep buddy is called Henry.

I cannot remember my first days of school however, I remember my buddy. Having a buddy made me feel safe and I could always ask him any questions or find him if something was wrong in the playground. Hopefully both Izzy and Henry will remember me…

I have made many friends at Cheltenham Primary School including the teachers and I know that I will keep in touch with many after finishing primary school later this year...

Pupil Free Day Tuesday, 9th JuneJust a reminder that Tuesday, 9th June (following the Queen’s Birthday public holiday) is a pupil free day. On this day children are not required at school. Our staff will be undertaking professional learning in restorative practice and anaphylaxis. On a final note it has been another “Egg-cellent” week at CPS punctuated by the arrival of our very first egg this morning!
