From the Minister
Christmas Mission Gift to Haiti DARBONNE MATERNAL AND
CHILD HEALTH CLINIC
The Darbonne Maternal and Child Health (MCH) Clinic is a comprehensive, holistic center for
maternal health located in the Léogâne district
in Southwestern Haiti; it is about a four hour drive west from Port-au-Prince.
The Presbyterian related Medical Benevolence Foundation
https://medicalmission.org/hospitalsclinics/darbo
nne-mch-clinic-haiti has made this a priority for medial church mission.
Cindy Anderson has twice planned to visit with
a medical team but the visits have been blocked
due to political instability. The West Granville Mission Committee is still sending $750 to
support this critical care for mothers and children. Cindy is hoping for a trip in March
2020.
Outpatient Visits: 20,000
Maternity Deliveries: 700
Well baby visits: 6,000
Family planning clinic visits: 3,600
Target areas for sustainable impact: Reduce maternal and infant mortality
through health education and deliveries
attended by medical professionals at a safe inpatient clinic.
Reduce child mortality rates through
well-baby clinics and primary healthcare
visits for infants and children under 5 years.
Increase both availability of services and
demand for services by systematically reducing barriers that keep women from
accessing and seeking care. Improve the training of traditional birth
attendants, increasing their ability to
identify and refer at-risk women for
inpatient deliveries.
God Bless and Merry Christmas

WINNEBAGO GIFT GIVING It's that time of year. The giving tree for gifts
for the patients at Winnebago Mental Health
Institute is set up and ready with gifting request ornaments. I will collect all the gifts by
December 1. These gifts are making another person's happiness during a time in their life
when they may feel forgotten. These gifts are
used for Christmas and birthdays as well as for prizes for Bingo. The gifts should be brought in
unwrapped (gift bags are good). There should be no pump bottles and journals should be
wireless. So when you are out shopping, please keep these special people in mind. You may also
give a gift of money. Please make the check out
to West Granville Church and note Winnebago in the memo line. The church will then send a
single check. Thank you in advance for all your generosity. May God bless you,
Pat Grogan

2020 Montreat Youth Conference
“We Are”
Montreat Youth Conference is a unique
gathering of young people from all over the country for a week of study, worship, and
recreation.
July 25 - August 2, 2020
Montreat Youth Conference (MYC) is designed for high school students, entering freshmen
through graduated seniors, and for their group
leaders. There are four main parts of every day:
Keynote – The keynote session gathers
everyone together for movement and group building (fondly known as energizers),
announcements, music, and keynote.
Keynote is a 45 minute-ish presentation engaging conferees in that day’s scriptural
theme. After keynote, conferees head to small group sessions.
Small Groups – Small groups allow youth to form relationships with others in
order to have honest discussions with each other about questions raised during keynote
and worship. Small group sessions are led
by trained small group leaders, who guide conversation and lead group building
activities.
Worship – After dinner, everyone
gathers for worship. In worship, youth engage the Word of God as they seek to
understand and respond to the challenges and triumphs of being a high schooler in the
twenty-first century. Youth Conference
worship is joyful, reflective, and seeks to glorify God using many creative gifts of the
participants.
Recreation – Recreation events are
featured throughout the day and include everything from dance, games, and group
building activities to snow-cone parties,
international crafts, and service. Energizers are a much beloved Montreat tradition,
pairing popular music and simple movements everyone can enjoy.

NOTES FROM YOUR PARISH NURSE ILLNESS AND THE HOLIDAYS
The Christmas and New Year holidays are just around the corner. Many of us are busy
preparing special meals, attending family and friend functions and in general, are just a bit
over-extended at this time of year. While it can be wonderful seeing friends and family
members, we tend to get overly tired with all
the preparations and demands of this season. When this happens, our bodies’ resistance to
fight off colds, the flu and flu-like illnesses is compromised. We may be exposed to illnesses
from others when we travel over the holiday
season or are in crowded areas such as a shopping mall or in other social settings where
large numbers of people congregate. In addition, the influenza (flu) viruses are
circulating with flu activity peaking between
December and February. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) monitors
key flu indicators such as outpatient visits for influenza-like illness (ILI), the results of
laboratory testing and reports of flu hospitalizations and deaths. When these
indicators rise and remain elevated for
consecutive weeks, “flu season” is said to have begun. All these factors can come together and
create a “perfect storm” for us and our loved
ones to get sick. In the previous Newsletters we have spent
time discussing the flu, how it is transmitted and what each of us can do to protect ourselves
from getting the flu as well as how to care for
ourselves and our loved ones if we do get sick. The CDC advises us to get vaccinated if we have
not received the flu shot this fall. The flu season can last as late as May in the United States. In
addition to getting a seasonal flu vaccine, we can take everyday preventive actions like
staying away from sick people and washing our
hands to reduce the spread of germs. If we do get sick with flu, stay home from school or work
to prevent spreading flu to others. In addition, there are prescription medications called
antiviral drugs that can be used to treat flu
illness. Treatment with antiviral drugs work best when begun within 48 hours of getting sick with
flu. Antiviral drugs are effective across all age and risk groups. The CDC states that prompt
treatment with antiviral drugs can prevent serious flu complications like pneumonia. Prompt
treatment can make the difference between
having a milder illness versus a very serious illness that could result in a hospital stay.
At this most holy time of year, my wish for each of you is that you have optimum health,
practice good health habits by eating well-
balanced meals and getting proper sleep. Please consider getting the flu vaccine for yourselves
and your family members if you have not done so - it is not too late to get vaccinated. Enjoy
our very special church family, friends and loved
ones. There is much to be grateful for as we prepare our hearts for the birth of our Lord and
Savior. Peace and Blessings,
Lil Sullivan, Parish Nurse
