P: Risen Savior, grant us the fullness of joy and peace that the good news of your resurrection from death offers. By your rising from the dead you’ve confirmed our faith that you are the Son of God, that our many sins for which you died on the cross are all forgiven, and that our future is not in this dreary world but in the home you prepared for us in heaven. By your Spirit and your Word dispel our doubts and fears and strengthen us to live as children of God who in baptism were buried with you and raised to live new lives to your glory. We ask these blessings in your name, O Jesus, for you died for us, but you rose triumphant and you live and reign with the Father and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.C: Amen.

The Gospel Reading: Matthew 28:1-10 After the Sabbath, at dawn on the first day of the week,

Mary Magdalene and the other Mary went to look at the tomb.

2 There was a violent earthquake, for an angel of the Lord came down from heaven and, going to the tomb, rolled back the stone and sat on it. 3 His appearance was like lightning, and his clothes were white as snow. 4 The guards were so afraid of him that they shook and became like dead men.

5 The angel said to the women, ‘‘Do not be afraid, for I know that you are looking for Jesus, who was crucified. 6 He is not here; he has risen, just as he said. Come and see the place where he lay. 7 Then go quickly and tell his disciples: ‘He has risen from the dead and is going ahead of you into Galilee. There you will see him.’ Now I have told you.”

8 So the women hurried away from the tomb, afraid yet filled with joy, and ran to tell his disciples. 9 Suddenly Jesus met them. ‘‘Greetings,” he said. They came to him, clasped his feet and worshiped him. 10 Then Jesus said to them, ‘‘Do not be afraid. Go and tell my brothers to go to Galilee; there they will see me.”

Hymn: #143 “He’s Risen, He’s Risen”

Sermon Text: I Corinthians 15:12-2012 But if it is preached that Christ has been raised from the

dead, how can some of you say that there is no resurrection of the dead? 13 If there is no resurrection of the dead, then not even Christ has been raised. 14 And if Christ has not been

4

raised, our preaching is useless and so is your faith. 15 More than that, we are then found to be false witnesses about God, for we have testified about God that he raised Christ from the dead. But he did not raise him if in fact the dead are not raised. 16 For if the dead are not raised, then Christ has not been raised either. 17 And if Christ has not been raised, your faith is futile; you are still in your sins. 18 Then those also who have fallen asleep in Christ are lost. 19 If only for this life we have hope in Christ, we are to be pitied more than all men.

20 But Christ has indeed been raised from the dead, the firstfruits of those who have fallen asleep.

church pictorial directories have arrived! If you had your picture taken for our directory, you will find your complimentary copy available on the tables in the narthex. If you didn’t have your picture taken, but are interested in purchasing one, please sign up at the table also.

4. 75 th Anniversary Offering Envelope At its February meeting our church council moved to offer all members of St. Matthew’s an opportunity to give thanks to God for 75 years of blessings on our congregation by means of a special thank offering. A special “75th Anniversary Thank Offering” envelope can be found on the counter in the narthex. Our “Anniversary Sunday” is scheduled for Sunday, April 23, which is the Sunday after Easter, but these envelopes may be used at any time to contribute to the anniversary effort.* Gifts given in these envelopes will be used first to offset expenses related to the special anniversary year celebration such as travel expenses for guest speakers and guest organists and costs for printing anniversary materials. Those costs are expected to be about $5,000.00. * If the gifts received exceed the amount needed to cover expenses the council recommends a remodel of the Milton Street entrance that is mostly unused. The plan for remodeling that entrance calls for removal of the four wooden doors, and for the covered entryway just outside the wooden doors to be enclosed with walls and windows. This remodel would create more room for members and guests to congregate and visit before and after services and would alleviate the “traffic jam” that often forms at the bottom of the ramp where the Milton Street doors are located.

The cost of this project is estimated to be in the neighborhood of $10,000.00. * The final decision about how the proceeds of the special offering will be used will be made by the voters’ assembly and will be based on the total amount of gifts received. We hope all members of St. Matthew’s will take advantage of this special opportunity to give thanks to our gracious God for 75 years of blessings on our church and
