A Night with the Authors

Come join us for a night with our SOC authors on Wednesday, April 8, 2015 from 5:00pm-7:30pm at Howard University Bookstore, 2225 Georgia Ave, NW, Washington, DC 20059. Our authors include Drs. Joanna Jenkins, Joan C. Payne, Tia C.M. Tyree, Sonja D. Williams, and Anju Grover Chaudhary.

Anju Grover Chaudhary (2014) Historiography of the Mughal Age (Collected Works of Professor B. R. Grover) Vol. 7. The term “historiography” not only refers to the study of past events but deals with the theory and methodology of historical writing. Based on the critical examination of various sources, different historians have recorded and interpreted the events, over time, according to their own understanding. The collection of papers contained in this Volume reflects an unbiased, critical approach that goes beyond the mere examination of historical facts.

The author consulted original English and Persian documents and took an integrated and scientific approach to the analysis of the historical process.

Joanna Jenkins (2014). The Convergence Crisis: An Impending Paradigm Shift in Advertising. The Convergence Crisis reveals the impending paradigm shift, impact of modern technology, culture, and opportunities presented through change.

The Convergence Crisis introduces “triadic convergence” and its implications within this new-media ecosystem. Beginning in the early 1840’s with the birth of the first advertising agency and momentum spurred by industrial systems,

the book provides a historical overview of significant events and socio-cultural economic factors that have occurred to explain how and why a [convergence] crisis has erupted.

Significant blurring of once distinct boundaries and redistribution caused by convergence has led to new methods of communication in advertising and among audiences. The book brings awareness, and understanding to opportunities presented through change via its rich historical narrative and theoretical framework.

Joan C. Payne (2014). Supporting Family Caregivers of Adults with Communication Disorders: A Resource Guide for Speech-Language Pathologists and Audiologists. Family caregivers are a major source of assistance for chronically ill and disabled adults. Caregiving for these adults who also have communication disorders can be stressful to the extent that the mental and physical well-being of caregivers is also compromised. This book provides resource, assessment, and counseling information for speech-language pathologists and audiologists to enable them to decrease caregiver stress through education, counseling and

appropriate referrals.

Tia C. M. Tyree and Christopher C. Cathcart (2013) HBCU Experience. Coedited by two Howard University alums – Tia C. M. Tyree and Christopher Cathcart, the book is a collection of more than 60 personal essays spanning over six decades written by HBCU graduates. The foreword is by U.S. Congressman Elijah Cummings, and the introduction is by the award–winning journalist and academic Alissa Richardson. The book is important for many reasons, especially as the climate of the worth of HBCUs is being challenged. The timing is also key as students are now

starting to apply for colleges. It's a great read for them and others, of course.

Sonja D. Williams (2014) World Warrior Richard Durham, Radio, and Freedom Posthumously inducted into the National Radio Hall of Fame in 2007, Richard Durham creatively chronicled and brought to life the significant events of his times (1917-1984). Durham's trademark narrative style engaged listeners with fascinating characters, compelling details, and sharp images of pivotal moments in American and African American history and culture.

In Word Warrior, award-winning radio producer Sonja D. Williams draws on archives, family records, as well as interviews with colleagues like Studs Terkel, Langston Hughes, Oscar Brown Jr., and Toni Morrison, to illuminate Durham's astounding career. Durham paved the way for black journalists as a broadcaster and a star investigative reporter and editor for the pioneering black newspapers the Chicago Defender and Muhammed Speaks.
