Please highlight any existing RSG materials that will enhance your fire-adapted efforts – these can be requested through the RSG website. Also highlight anticipated efforts that encourage your community members to protect what matters. Do they know their region, risks and role? Residents should ensure their homes are prepared and become involved in local efforts like Community Wildfire Protection Plans. Ongoing dialogue between public safety personnel and the residents they service is a vital piece of the community preparedness approach.

Descriptive Narrative Sample 1: Descriptive Narrative Sample 2: Sample 2:

8. Descriptive Narrative:

The grant amount requested is $3,425 dollars. This will fund the purchase of a fuels mitigation trailer, a 20” bar gas chainsaw ($400), five sets of hand pruners ($100), five pairs of gloves ($100), five leaf rakes ($200), five pairs work glasses ($75), and five face masks ($100). The Eagle Ocean Fire Department is developing a mitigation team that will go out to communities and host Community Mitigation Day. During this event, neighborhoods will be invited to join in the mitigation of their property, disposing of fuels such as trees, brush, grass, and other forms of debris surrounding their homes.

During this event, personnel will also conduct home assessments of community members’ properties, handing out the Ready, Set, Go! Program Action Guide, and other educational materials that we will be obtaining from RSG staff for these events. Personnel will have the proper tools to assist with basic fuels mitigation and will be available for suggestions regarding other harmful fuels that need to be removed.

These events will run from the beginning of March until the end of July 2016 in an effort to mitigate homes prior and during wildland fire season in our area.

During this effort, we will hand out flyers promoting a Community Education Day at the firehouse that will take place May 15th, 2016. At this event, we will provide education materials and spread the message of the importance of personal action through mitigation and being prepared for wildland fires using the RSG! Program and Community Wildfire Readiness Program. We hope to motivate homeowners to take responsibility to protect their property. This will also help personnel become more familiar with the community members and areas we strive to protect and build better relationships with our residents.

Chipper rental: 5 days = $2,150 at $430 a day

The grant amount requested is $4,150 for five separate events in which the department will rent a chipper at $430 for daily use. Over the next four months, Vail County Volunteer Fire Department will host Mitigation Days. Our dates include the 1st of March, 1st of April, 1st of May, and the 1st and 30th of June in a final effort to prepare our surrounding communities for the coming fire season. We found while surveying our community that this past fall and winter left many trees down during storms; these trees are a fuel danger.

Each month we would host our Mitigation Day at a different surrounding community. To assist in spreading the word to community members, we will be using the templates provided by the RSG! Program, including event flyers to promote this great event. Each event will have personnel on site to operate the chipper. Other personnel will be available for home assessments in the community, while a handful will remain present with a wildland fire vehicle for the children to see. These personnel will be handing out educational information about preparedness and mitigation, including the RSG National Action Guide, Youth Coloring Booklets, and Go Kit Bags to inspire and educate community members. We plan on ordering these materials soon from RSG staff. We plan to allot $2,150 for chipper rental, $500 for drinks and hotdogs/buns and the remaining funding will be used for debris removal fees.

The events will be promoted as a community action day and will include tents set up where food, water, and soda will be provided. We hope this event will feel more like a community get together day, in which neighbors can become better acquainted with their local fire department members, enjoy a day out working on their yards, and dispose of any debris or other potential fuels on their property.
