Grace Notes June 2009 Rector Letter The Joy of Working for the Lord! A funny thing happened at the car wash… as cars to be washed thinned out, the adults began to mill around the property. One person started to do a ministry that she loves- gardening. Then a second person drifted over to the beds and started to weed….A few drifted inside the parish hall and started to put some areas in order- in community and with a lot of support for one another. There was chatter and laughter and a feeling of… uncertainty as we attempted to put things in order for others in the community- Would this be the right place? Would someone want this item? Rector Letter

The Joy of Working for the Lord!

A funny thing happened at the car wash as cars to be washed thinned out, the adults began to mill around the property. One person started to do a ministry that she loves- gardening. Then a second person drifted over to the beds and started to weed.A few drifted inside the parish hall and started to put some areas in order- in community and with a lot of support for one another. There was chatter and laughter and a feeling of uncertainty as we attempted to put things in order for others in the community-

Would this be the right place?

Would someone want this item? Oh it is broken guess we should throw it away

and then a feeling of happiness as we arranged and rearranged attempting to make this a place- not for those working, but a place for those who come to Grace.

When it was time for the car wash to conclude, there was a feeling of contentment. How had this happened? We all looked around in amazement at the work we had accomplished both inside and outside. Weeds just disappeared, the youth were talking with adults about what they were doing or interested in, and things inside the parish hall were just a bit shinier. We had not planned this, it just evolved. This is the joy of working for the Lord.

When you have found what God is calling you to do at church, it is not a chore, it is pure joy. Maybe not every minute is joy sometimes it is hard to get to the church or get started, sometimes it takes courage to make known what you feel called to do, but as you do the task you know you are answering a call from God and in answering this call you are transformed.

Some are called to work in the church creating a place of community and worship, or to give our youth the support they need through care and education

Some are called to work during church services by reading, giving hospitality to newcomers as well as the community they serve, setting up the Eucharist or helping to give the wine to those who gather for the most holy meal

And some are called to bring the joy found in church to the world by seeking out those in need.

Take some time this week to be still and hear what God is asking you to do. Have you been thinking about being on the Altar Guild or giving the Eucharist to others in the community? Have you been noticing the beauty of a flower bed and feel called to weed it? Have you been thinking about a need to pray or read scripture? Have you felt a call to explore the community around Grace to find those who need help?

Feel the spirit of the Lord calling you it may be a call for a single action or it may lead you to a new ministry. One thing I know is if you answer this call you will feel the Joy of Working for the Lord

I felt this joy on a simple afternoon at Grace New Market working in community with some amazing children of God- both youth and adults it was a great day at Grace.

The Reverend Sharon L. Watts

Yard Sale Thank You

Thanks to Trish, Vince and Meaghan Holahan; Bill, Lora, Millie and Anna Ransohoff, and Rev Sharon who all showed up at 7 a.m. on the day of the yard sale. They toted, carried, and set up. They sold, packaged, and stayed all day to close up the yard sale. (Course Rev Sharon was working hard to recruit new members.) Thank you to Nancy and Clayton Magee who sorted through many tedious items to present them nicely for the sale. Then on Sunday, the same folk stayed after a few more sales were made, and helped box up, tote, and sort for Goodwill Industries, who came on Monday. And thanks to our entire parish for donating so many items, and making the yard sale a success. We raised over $760 at the yard sale for the new organ!!Anne, Carol and Bob

Daughters of the King

The regular monthly meeting of the DOK will be held on Thursday, June 19th, at 7:00 p.m. in the Brinkley-Gove Chapel.

All ladies of Grace are welcome to become a member of the Daughters of the King. If you are not a member of the DOK but are interested in joining, please contact Trish Holahan at [email protected]. We hope you will consider joining us.

Coffee Hour Hosts

We have had donations from two parishioners for coffee hour. We are in need of some people willing to take on buying the cookies (for which you would be reimbursed from these donations) and putting on the coffee hour. We have Sundays in all the coming months available to do this. If you are able and willing to do this, please let the church office know at [email protected] or 301-865-3270. Thank you.

Outreach at Grace

Outreach ministry seeks to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ through building inclusiveness and dignity for Gods people locally, nationally, and internationally. Grace Church has designated a portion of our general funds to facilitate the implementation of this ministry. In order to continue to spread Jesus Christs gospel and best utilize the funds, the Outreach committee, now consisting of Freida Pryor and Joe Hafner, is preparing a parish survey to find out what your thoughts are on Outreach. For example:

What are you passionate about?

What do you support for your own personal Outreach?

What would you like us to investigate as a possible project(s) for Grace?

PLEASE EMAIL ANY SUGGESTIONS OR COMMENTS TO:

FREIDA PRYOR [email protected] or JOE HAFNER [email protected]

Please consider serving on this committee as part of your personal outreach.

Watch for the survey. We hope to have it ready within the next month.

Newest Project

We are now offering support to the Orthodox Nuns at St Ninas in Union Bridge Maryland. www.saintnina-monastery.org

There is a box in the Outreach Corner in the Narthex, along with their needs list, for donations. If you want to contribute large items or make a cash donation, please contact Freida Pryor or Angela Furlong.

Angela will be periodically taking donated items to the monastery.

Current Projects and Project Managers

Food Bank (The Baer Family)

The cart to collect food for the Frederick Food bank has been emptied and is in need of refilling. Just one can or box per week per family could fill the cart weekly

Heartly House (The Glasbys)

We are asking that donations to Heartly House be in the form of Gift Cards. I'd like to add that everything that has been donated is very much appreciated and also plead for small denomination gift cards to Wal-Mart, Target, Sheetz, etc. These really help us stretch things and give the clients a little sense of empowerment by being able to buy their own things or put gas in their car to go to a job interview. However, there is also a needs list by the Heartlly House box at the Outreach Corner in the Narthex.

Ronald McDonald Tabs (Carol Glasby)

Bob Glasby mailed 8 1/2 pounds of pop tops to Ronald McDonald House today. A huge thank you to Jane Duggan who contributed a lot of them!!!

GOD BLESSES YOU FOR SUPPORTING THESE PROJECTS

Do you have an ugly mug that needs a home?

The Reverend Sharon is going to Virginia Theological Seminary (VTS) the second week of June for a continuing education program and would love to take your ugly mugs to a home that will love them. The seminary is always searching for ugly mugs to let their seminarians carry hot drinks around the seminary. So bring them to the church by June 1 and we will load them in the car. They will be loved

Thank You!!!!!

Thank you to everyone who volunteered the last two Saturdays at

The Yard Sale and the Acolyte Car Wash-

It was wonderful seeing the community that developed from these two times at Grace.
