Prior to the opening of Jamesburg High School, Jamesburg students who desired a high school education daily boarded trains which took them to New Brunswick or other high schools. Believing that their students deserved better, the Jamesburg Board of Education voted in 1905 to open its own high school.

The new Jamesburg High School admitted its first thirteen students in September, 1906. Classes were held in Jamesburg’s Elementary School, sharing a room and teacher with the school’s 8

th graders. High

school classes continued in this manner until the first Jamesburg High School building was built. Jamesburg High School’s first Principal was Curtis A. Deveney, who remained Principal until his death in 1927. Mr. Deveney is called “the Father of Jamesburg High School.

The first class graduated in 1910. There were eight students in the first graduating Class: John Applegate, Tina Greenberg, Alma Grove Applegate, Leonora Grove Stryker, Alfred Lange, Viola Lewis Thompson, Ellis Martin, and Marion Paxton. John Applegate and Alma Grove were high school sweethearts and became the first Alumni to marry.

High school students first attended classes in their own building in 1912.. The new high school building was located across the street from the Jamesburg Elementary School and “contained four classrooms, a chemical laboratory, a manual training room, assembly, principal’s of-fice and a library.”

1 It served the needs of the school district for 19

years. The building then became an elementary school. The building was demolished in the late 1960s to make way for the present Grace M. Breckwedel School.

A “new” Jamesburg High School building was built in 1931 on Forsgate Drive, then “a large field, part of Peter Davison’s farm.”

2 It opened its

doors in September, 1932, and served students in the greater James-burg area until it closed its doors in June, 1979. Its last graduating class had forty members.

During its proud history, Jamesburg High school provided a high school education to thousands of students, not only from the Borough of Jamesburg, but, because of its cen-tral location, students from the Borough of Helmetta, the Township of Monroe, the Town-ship of South Brunswick, the Borough of Englishtown, the Borough of Spotswood, the Borough and Township of Cranbury, the Township of Old Bridge, and the Township of East Brunswick.

Although Jamesburg High School is closed, the building is very much alive, having been converted into “Forsgate Commons,” a complex of of-fice condominiums. While offices now occupy its classrooms, its proud history and memories live on in the hearts and minds of the thousands who walked its hallowed halls.

Welcome to the 7th! All class Reunion. I want to thank you all for

coming out tonight to celebrate "Friends Then and Now". The Alumni

board has worked hard to make tonight memorable for you.

We are keeping up with the Buckelew House. Michele has corre-

sponded with the county and the state, along with the town of Jamesburg.

At present there has been some restoration work, but much is still needed.

We have our memorabilia, although they wanted us to store it with them.

In 2012 we gave two more scholarships to Monroe Township High

School seniors. Our criteria for 2013 submissions is that they have to be

descendants of alumni. They need not have gone to Monroe, any high

school senior is eligible. We will meet in two weeks to decide on two

more for this year. If you have grandchildren who will be a high school

senior next year, they can write a letter to us. We want to know their GPA,

where they will attend school (can be a trade school), and who their alumni

family is.

Tonight, we have a type of assignment for you. Find the person whose

picture you were given on arrival. Talk to old friends, make new ones, and

enjoy the evening.

P.S. We meet monthly on the second Thursday, at the Jamesburg

Presbyterian Church on Gatzmer Avenue. We need more input from alumni

and help with the reunions. The Buckelew House (Lakeview), with the JHS

Room is closed at this time for renovations and upgrading. We have no

word when completion of this project is expected to happen.

10 The First JHS Graduating Class—1910

Jamesburg High School graduated its first class in 1910. There were eight students in the graduating class, John Applegate, Tina Greenberg, Alma Grove, Lenora Grove, Alfred Lange. Viola Lewis, Ellis Martin and Marion Paxton.

John Applegate and Alma Grove married shortly after their graduation They thus became Jamesburg High School's first mar-ried Alumni couple.

Between September, 1906 and June, 1979, approximately 6,100 students attended Jamesburg High School at some point in their academic lives. Jamesburg High School graduated 4,100 stu-dents in its seventy three year history. While Jamesburg High School may be closed, its influence lives on in the hearts and minds of the thousands of students who walked its hallowed halls. It is a history of which its Alumni can be proud.

Janet, Thank you for the invite for the Seventh All Class Reunion at Jamesburg High. I lived above the Rex-all Drug Store (burned down in 1954) from 1928 till 1938. This was a few blocks down RailRoad Ave from Jamesberg High. Your mail prompted my son and I to do some research on the web. We just found the Jamesburg High School Alumni Association web site and have enjoyed browsing to find where some of my old classmates are living - Keep up the good work. My wife Mary (also class of 37) just celebrated our 69th wedding anniversary this week. Attached is a picture of us at our celebration and some before shots from around 1940. I'm sorry to report that Harry Hutchinson (class of 37) who Mary and I kept up with passed away. At 93 traveling from South Carolina to New Jersey would be a bit difficult for us so we won't be at-tending. We also don't recover like we used to from late night drinking and partying. If there is any-body else there from the class of 37 give them our best. Have a good time at the reunion! Mary & Les Southgate Class of 1937

THOUGHTS OF YOU AND ME

Just a line to say I'm living that I'm not among the dead,

Though I'm getting more forgetful and more mixed up in the head.

For sometimes I can't remember When I stand at the foot of stairs,

If I must go up for something Or I've just come down from there.

And before the fridge so often my poor mind filled with doubt,

Have I just put food away or have I come to take it out?

And there are times when it's dark out With my night cap on my head,

I don't know if I'm retiring or just getting out of bed.

'

So, if it's my turn to write you there's no need of getting sore,

I may think that I have written and don't want to be a bore.

So, remember, I do love you and I wish that you were here,

But now, it's nearly mail time so I must say, "Goodbye dear."

There I stood beside the mailbox With face so very red,

Instead of mailing you my letter I had opened it instead!
