Holmfirth J I & N School – Sports Organising Crew

Our first ‘School Sports Organising Crew’ was set up in 2013 with children from Year

5 and 6 who were keen to develop their leadership skills and use their sporting

knowledge to teach other children how to enjoy school sporting activities and

develop a love of sport at an early age.

The following comments, published in ‘Sporting Start’, sum up the success of the

‘Sports Crew’ in 2013.

“The ‘School Sports Organising Crew’ has been a huge success with the Year 5 & 6

children at Holmfirth J I & N School. This carefully developed programme has

encouraged children’s leadership skills, ability to work as a team and most

importantly their confidence. The ‘Crew’ have organised a Tri- Golf competition at

lunchtime and supported younger classes with Sports Day. Through regular

meetings and clear roles and responsibilities, Holmfirth J I & N School organising

crew have learnt valuable skills which have not only benefitted them but the whole

school. We cannot wait to implement this again in the new school year.”

Thank you Seth, and the Pennine Partnership for initiating such a fantastic

programme.

After a successful first year the Year 6 ‘School Sports Organising Crew’ members

advertised vacancies to the Year 5 class at the start of this school year (2013/14)

with interviews taking place in October.

Each candidate had to complete an

application form from which 2 or 3

questions were asked. After a nervous

wait the new crew members were

selected! After a small ‘welcome’

party and completion of the training

from Seth Foster our first official

meeting was held and a welcome

pack was given to each member.

In school we have the opportunity of holding weekly ‘Crew’ meetings where we

discuss and plan the events that we would like to hold. Each member has the

opportunity to offer their opinion and they are encouraged to do so. After lively

discussions a decision is made, event leaders and organisers are chosen and other

jobs are allocated, such as who will do the administration, the ICT work and the

advertising roles.

The team have been guided through their meetings to work cooperatively, with

respect for each other and to learn sound leadership skills. Our main aim is to

organise and hold exciting and fun events for children throughout the school. All

children are encouraged to participate and be active, particularly at lunchtimes.

I thought the ‘Tag Rugby’ was great

and that the Sports Organising

Crew is really good at organising

things.

I think you should do something

similar again.

This year’s crew have arranged the following events: Multi–Sports activities for the

Reception class, Year 6 Rounders and Year 4 Tag Rugby.

Year 4 Tag Rugby Team Photo

The final was Ireland v Wales. Ireland

came out on top!!

Scotland and England played a very

close 3rd place playoff – which actually

ended at 2 – 2!!

Fair Play is encouraged during the match as

is respecting your team mates and the

opposition.

The events have been so successful and have been enjoyed by the children

involved. The crew have learned so much about what went well and what can be

improved from each event, this is discussed after the event has taken place.

The crew’s biggest achievement this year was to plan, arrange and hold a ‘Winter

Olympic’ Games for the whole school to take part in on ‘Sport Relief’ day. Events

were differentiated between the

Foundation Stage, Key Stage 1 and the

Key Stage 2 children to ensure inclusion

for all.

The Reception children open the games

with banners and anthems.

The day’s events included a special version of

‘Wheelchair Curling’!

The ‘Tag Rugby’ was very good – it

was handled very well.

I liked it when I came 2nd!

The crew explain the rules of ‘Ice Hockey’.

Unsighted Slalom Skiing’ was

attempted by all the Key Stage

classes. In pairs, the children

learned to rely on each other for

instructions.

‘Figure Skating’ was a great

success for all Year groups.

costumes which added to the spectacle!

The children have shown their Advertising, ICT, and administrative skills which have

been developed throughout by making posters, team banners, newsletters,

scorecards, and certificates of achievement. A display board designed by the

children is maintained too, it shows the whole school who the crew members are,

pictures taken at the events, and

details of forthcoming events. We

have our own, specially designed,

SSOC logo too!!

It is a great way to organise

sport for younger children in

school!

The ‘SSOC’ Logo was designed by

Lucy in Year 4 in 2013; she is now a

valued member of the ‘Crew’. We think

it is a fantastic logo which will be used

on our display board, newsletters, on

certificates, and in presentations.

I really enjoyed

experiencing the events

organised by the ‘Crew’.

I have a great time planning the

events and teaching and helping

the children with different sports!

The ‘Crew’ have been outstanding and show continued commitment as meetings

take place at lunchtimes, they have worked at break times and we have even had

two early mornings before school!!

It is a pleasure to lead this team and we are very proud of their achievements. In

recognition of this we would like them to be nominated for the ‘KS2 Leadership

School of the Year’, it would be a very fitting award.
