Pastor’s Epistle

I came that they may have life, and have it abundantly.John 10:10

I remember when I was a young child how my mother would meticulously make out a shopping list each week for the food we would have for the following week. She planned out literally every meal we would have, breakfast, lunch and dinner. I knew that whatever breakfast cereal I requested to have would be my morning meal for at least a week. And that means if I chose one of the new, exciting brands I saw advertised on television, and discovered later that I didn’t like it, too bad, it was either that or nothing for breakfast. Every dinner was planned out, from the dreaded onion for the pizza to how much bread we would need depending on how many sandwiches we were going to make between lunch and dinner, grilled cheese being a kind of supper sandwich we sometimes ate.

But even with all of my mother’s careful planning, I can remember many occasions of her standing in front of the cashier in the grocery store and having to go through her purse to find change to pay the bill. Sometimes she found an extra dime and penny to complete the sale which was that much over what she had estimated what the bill was going to be. Sometimes she didn’t, and had to take something out of the already bagged groceries to deduct the cost of the item from the total charge to be able to pay for the remaining food.

With all of this said, and in spite of having very little financial security as a young child, I never remember going hungry. We may not have had much money, but due to my mother’s carefully planning and diligence, we always had enough. Her gift of planning was a blessing, in every sense of the word!

This fall the name of our stewardship campaign is Enough, which is based on a book and program by Rev. Adam Hamilton. In the coming weeks you will hear about the theme of Enough in the newsletter, letters to the congregation, several Minute for Missions, a few sermons, and during the first six weeks of Adult Sunday School. Simply stated, this theme seeks to remind all of us that God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work. (2 Corinthians 9:8)

At times we may feel that God hasn’t blessed us abundantly. And by blessed I mean anything from financial security to talents and abilities. To be sure most of us do feel the blessing of God in our life, but most of us would also feel hard pressed at times to call the amount of the blessing abundant!

As I learned growing up watching my mother methodically make out her shopping list, the abundance of our blessing often comes from how we use it, not in the total amount of whatever we have been given. That goes for how we spend our money to how we used the talents and abilities we have been given. Just as the widow’s offering (Mark 12:41-44, Luke 21:1-4) was of more value than the large gifts of those gave out of their worldly abundance, so too do the value and volume of our blessings grow in abundance when we faithfully use them in ways that bear witness to the love of God and grace of Jesus Christ in the world.

I hope and pray this fall that all of us can discover more deeply how to feel the joy being abundantly blessed through living a more a simple and generous way that embraces our truly abundant life we’ve been given by God through Jesus Christ.

Blessings,Pastor Justin

Our Church Family

Steve Hancook Retires as Habitat Representative

A big round of applause is due to Steve Hancook for his many

years of service to our church and Habitat as our representative to the Habitat committee and to the Presbyterian Build steering committee. In 1999 he was asked by Fauneil Gard to represent our church on the Habitat committee and to present Minutes for Mission about it in the Worship service. When the Presbyterian churches in the county organized a steering committee to do the Presbyterian builds, he took on that responsibility as well. He has performed admirably. Indeed, he was so efficient, that when he asked to step down, we had to ask him what his duties were because we didn't know. He has served on the committee as the Presbyterians organized eight builds. He has attended numerous meetings, encouraged donations, and organized work crews and meal preparation by members of our congregation, and he has helped personally with the work on the build sites.

Brian Sprague Takes Over as Habitat Representative

Thanks are also in order to Brian Sprague for volunteering to assume the responsibilities of Habitat Representative. Brian is a mechanical engineer at RFA Engineering. He is an active elder currently serving on the Session. He is married to Rebecca Sprague and they have three children: Megan, Zach, and Bailey. We look forward to his updates on progress for the next Presbyterian Build.

Enough Stewardship Campaign Invitation

Cathy Hancook, Chair, Stewardship Committee

They are to do good, to be rich in good works, generous, and ready to share, thus storing up for themselves the treasure of a good foundation for the future,

so that they may take hold of the life that really is life. (1 Tim 6:18-19)

As summer comes to a close with school starting and fall approaching, we know that it won’t be long before we are asked to “prayerfully consider” how much money we can pledge to continue the mission of Dayton Memorial Presbyterian Church. The mission statement we recite before worship is “to witness to the love of God and Jesus Christ to all people of the community and to serve their spiritual and physical needs through meaningful worship, Christian education, and community outreach programs”. And of course, that all takes money! That is when it sets in…stress, anxiety, fear. These feelings are the state of mind of many of us in America, as well as in Dayton and Lafayette, Indiana today. We have witnessed dramatic market losses, the collapse of the world’s largest insurance company, and many bankruptcies and mergers. Even with the glimpses of good financial news, there is still a strong sense economic uncertainty. Add to these the day in and day out worries, school clothes and supplies, medical bills, and oh yeah, Christmas is right around the corner! To “prayerfully consider” is not always an easy task, especially if you consider not only money but also time and talent when managing your own personal resources.

A recent survey found that over three in four Americans are stressed about the economy and their personal finances. Half were worried about providing for their family’s basic needs. Over half of respondents reported feeling angry and irritable, and reported lying awake at night worried about these things. The report concludes that, “The declining state of the nation’s economy is taking a physical and emotional toll on people nationwide.” Our nation is just now beginning to wake up from what many have described as the “American Nightmare.” Increasing consumer debt, declines in savings, lower income growth, and a volatile stock market are all a part of our economic insecurity. All of us have struggled with these issues at one time or another. They are important issues that we cannot ignore.

In anticipation of our ENOUGH Stewardship Campaign when members are asked to “prayerfully consider” their pledge for the coming year and in an effort to help members plan most effectively, an informative program will be offered to the congregation. This is a personal invitation to join us in Adult Sunday School Class for a six week series entitled Enough: Discovering Joy Through Simplicity and Generosity.

During this time Pastor Justin will explore with us what scripture teaches us about financial management. We’ll hear expert advice from Rev. Adam Hamilton, as endorsed by Dave Ramsey*, and hear and share stories about what others have learned by working through financial challenges. Each week will provide you with some practical tools you can use to assess your financial situation and develop a financial plan with a biblical foundation. The whole purpose is to help each of us off the consumerism treadmill and find the joy and contentment that come with a simpler and more generous way of living.

At the conclusion of the study, we will have the opportunity to make personal commitments of our offerings to God through our church in the coming year. We will consecrate these commitments in the worship service on Stewardship/Consecration Celebration Sunday on October 19, 2014.

Even if you normally do not attend Adult Sunday School, I hope you will join us in the coming weeks as we look at how we can manage our financial resources and truly experience simplicity, generosity, and joy! Use this opportunity to invite others (members and nonmembers) to take part of this offering at Dayton Memorial Presbyterian Church! Hopefully, by Stewardship/Consecration Celebration Sunday you will have the tools you need to “prayerfully consider” how to experience this joy!

Staying in the Word Together – September 2014

Join Christians throughout North America as they read together – each Sunday – the scriptures for the week. Known as the Revised Common Lectionary (RCL), the collections of readings is organized so that after a three year cycle, members of churches will have read through the majority of the Bible. In our church, our Sunday school curriculum follows the RCL.

As a church and denomination, we use the RCL and provide these to the pastors for direction on the order of worship and for guidance in Christian Education. A guest pastor may choose not to use the scriptures, but we are providing them to the congregation as a means of Staying in the Word Together. Traditionally, there will be an Old Testament, Psalm New Testament and Gospel reading. For additional readings go to http://lectionary.library.vanderbilt.edu/.
