Liquid Detergent Pods Pose Risk to Eye Health
Detergent pods may offer a simpler way to dolaundry, but they also represent a potentialdanger when in the hands of a young child. They are brightly colored, making themattractive to young children who mistake themfor toys. Since 2012, several children under theage of 4 were treated for eye injuries frombursting the detergent pods. When squeezed orbitten into, these pods can send detergent into the mouth, nose, and eyes, resulting in corneal abrasions. Please be aware of the potential dangers thesepods present to kids, and keep them out of their reach.
Start the New Year with a Refraction!
It is the New Year, and many people are eager to update their look with an newpair of frames, or are ready to switch from overthecounter readers toprescription lenses. No matter the reason, it is best to start by seeking anaccurate and uptodate prescription, which can be obtained through a noninvasive procedure called a refraction. Refractions are available at all locationsof Matossian Eye Associates.
Refractions are an important part of a comprehensive eye exam. They help todetermine the exact prescription power you need to correct your vision, andcan even tell you what strength of overthecounter readers will be the mostbeneficial to you. Not all insurances cover the cost of a refraction, so at times, there may be an outofpocket expense to you.
Call 18007088800 for an appointment today, and start the New Year offright with clear vision!

Are You at Risk?
Approximately 2.7 million Americans have the potentially blinding eye diseaseglaucoma, but only half are aware of it. Meanwhile, glaucoma incidence is onthe rise. Researchers predict that glaucoma will affect as many as 6.3 millionAmericas by 2050. January is Glaucoma Awareness Month at Matossian EyeAssociates.
Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, which linksthe eyes to the brain. It is most commonly associated with elevated pressureinside the eye, known as intraocular pressure, or IOP. Without treatment, glaucoma can cause irreversible vision loss in a person’s side vision, then in hisor her central vision. With early diagnosis and treatment, sight can bepreserved. However, glaucoma has no noticeable symptoms in its early stages,so it is imperative that people know the risk factors.
Certain factors can increase an individual’s risk of developing glaucoma, including: family history, older age, African, Hispanic, or Asian Heritage, nearsightedness, and type 2 diabetes. Another risk factor associated withglaucoma is a history of eye trauma.
Our Fellowshiptrained Glaucoma specialists offer the latest in treatment, frommedical and laser interventions and microsurgical techniques.
