Robert Insalaco Youth Award On Saturday March 11, 2017 Jake Smith was invited to attend the Erie County Sheriffs Badge & Shield Club annual dinner honoring their 2016 retirees and award recipients. Jake was awarded the Robert Insalaco Youth Award that is given to a youth who has demonstrated significant assistance to law enforcement, or who, by his/her actions, h a s exemplified excellent judgment in helping others. He was given this award for his senior capstone project and his efforts in raising over $12,000 for The Children’s League from “Jake’s Mission”. Jake graduated from SGI in 2016 and is currently on the wrestling team and in the ROTC program at Brockport College as a psychology major.

Leading the Way toCollege Affordability

Governor Cuomo and the State Legislature recently enacted the Excelsior Scholarship program, which is administered by the Higher Education Services Corporation. Below is information provided by the Governor’s office about the program: This year, Governor Cuomo and the New York State Legislature enacted the nation’s first tuition-free degree program, the Excelsior Scholarship. The Scholarship is making college possible for hundreds of thousands of students across the state and helping to alleviate the crushing burden of student debt. A college education is increasingly necessary to secure the jobs of tomorrow, and the Excelsior Scholarship ensures New York’s students have access to a quality education and the skills they need to succeed. The Scholarship is available to students enrolled at SUNY or CUNY school for the fall of 2017. The program goes into effect immediately, and is available for students whose families earn up to $100,000 annually beginning in the fall 2017. It will extend to families making up to $125,000 annually by 2019. More than 940,000 middle-class families across New York State will be eligible for the Scholarship, and the requirements are simple. 2017 Envirothon Competition Springville High School recently competed in the 2017 Envirothon Competition on April 27 at Elma Senior Center Park. The team placed second in Erie County. The competition involves outdoor science events, an oral presentation and taking written tests. The current issue this year dealt with best management practices for agriculture. The team placed first in the Aquatics event, first in the wildlife event, and placed third in the soils, current issue and forestry events. Erie County Association of School Boards Award On Thursday, June 1st, the SGI Human Rights Club was honored for their work by receiving the Erie County Association of School Boards “Hodgson Russ Excellence in Collaboration” Honor Award, given in front of over one hundred educational leaders at Salvatore’s Restaurant. Founded in 2007 by several students and Eighth Grade Social Studies teacher Drew Beiter, the club’s focus is to provide the training and skills to inspire its members to lead a contributory life in their community, nation, and world. Designed to connect the important issues of the day to its participants’ heads, hearts, and hands, it has raised over $27,000 for local and international charities through fundraising activities that have included:

• A Day of Silence for Girls’ Education in Afghanistan• A Walkathon for Syrian Refugees• Penny Drives to Build Classrooms in Sierra Leone and Pakistan• Donation Drives for Hurricane Sandy and other natural disasters• Used Book Drive for Springville’s Sister School in Nepal

Working in collaboration with the Summer Institute for Human Rights and Genocide Studies of Buffalo and the Robert F. Kennedy Center for Human Rights, in 2015, the group was also featured in a national video produced by the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. The ClubhouseGreat Food, Fun and Friends

The SGI Kindergarten through Grade 5 dining experience is about to become even more fun and exciting for our K-5 students! A new meal program called The Clubhouse, created by our food service operator Sodexo, is being launched in our elementary schools. The Sodexo team developed this program after listening to over 250 students across the country talk about what they liked to do while eating lunch at school. The Clubhouse was built on ideas from students, focusing on the joy of being with their friends, eating healthy comfort foods while discovering new flavors, and being in a colorful and customizable environment. The students who ate at The Clubhouse said it was “colorful and playful” and it “made you feel like you are part of the club”. SGI is looking forward to introducing The Clubhouse as a new dining experience for our students to enjoy while at school.

The Buffalo Zoo

Romeo and Juliet

On Tuesday, May 2nd the SES 1st graders had the privilege to attend The Buffalo Zoo. The field trip took our students on a guided tour of the zoo in small groups. We learned so much about the many animals at the zoo and saw animals there from all over the world. While all of the animals were exciting to see, some of the highlights included the elephants, Luna the polar bear, the giraffes, and the arctic fox. The gorillas were acting extra playful while we were visiting them – one of them played “hide and seek” with a cardboard box! The sea lions also put on quite a show swimming as fast as they could as we observed them from the underground tank. We learned so much about the zoo animals and had a lot of fun!

On March 29th, SGI High School’s Freshmen class, and AP/Honors and theatre students ventured to the University at Buffalo’s Center for the Arts to enjoy a performance of Romeo and Juliet. In addition to enjoying the fast love and star-crossed demise of Shakespeare’s young lovers, some students were invited to view the thumb-biting and sword-fighting from special seating on the show’s stage, as the production by the American Shakespeare Center sought to recreate Renaissance staging conditions. Many tears of sadness were enjoyed by all.

SADD PreventionEducation Program

Students in the Fourth Grade at Springville Elementary School participated in a special Prevention Education Program provided by a select group of Springville-G.I. High School students. The program involved high school students going to Springville Elementary School and providing a set curriculum on drug-free choices and resiliency techniques. The high school students are involved in peer education leadership activities through S.A.D.D and N.H.S. The program was held on April 25, 2017. Prevention Education Partners is a peer education based program. The HS students presented and discussed information from specific resiliency material. This material was sent home with the 4th graders. HS students were trained on these presentations. The training for the educators took place at the HS on Thursday April 20, 2017, facilitated by Mrs. Barbara Reed, Mrs. Barbara Kracht and Mrs. Tish Urban. Mrs. Hamister was the coordinator at the Elementary School. The 4th grade classroom teachers also supervised instruction of this program. This is the 24th successful year of the program. The high school students have done an excellent job on presentation and rapport with the 4th grade students!

Sunny Strawberry & Cantaloupe Salad

Ingredients: • 1 cup sliced fresh strawberries• 1 cup cubed cantaloupe• 1/2 cup cubed part-skim mozzarella cheese• 2 Tbsp raspberry vinaigrette• 1/2 cup fresh raspberries• 1 Tbsp sunflower kernels• Thinly sliced fresh mint leaves,

optional

Directions:1. In a large bowl, combine

strawberries, cantaloupe and cheese2. Drizzle with vinaigrette and toss to coat.3. Just before serving, gently stir in raspberries; top with

sunflower kernels. If desired, sprinkle with mint.4. Total Prep Time: 15 min. Yield: 4 servings.

Carrot Apple Salad

Salad Ingredients: • 4 medium carrots, coarsely grated• 1 apple, diced• 3/4 cup Craisins (dried cranberries)• 1/4 cup purple or sweet onion,

finely diced (optional)

Dressing Ingredients: • 1/2 cup mayonnaise• 2 Tsp lemon juice• 1/2 Tbsp sugar• 1/8 Tsp sea salt/pinch of black pepper (to taste)

Directions:1. In a small bowl, combine all dressing ingredients and stir

together. Set aside2. Coarsely grate your carrots (food processor is fastest) and

transfer carrots to a large mixing bowl. Dice your apples, and finely diced onion (optional) and add to the large mixing bowl, along with your Craisins.

3. Add the salad dressing to taste when ready to serve, stir the salad together and ENJOY!

Summer Time...and the Livin’ is Easy...

Summer is a great time to be sure that your students’ immunizations are up to date! Below is an overview of the new and required vaccinations for NY students entering Pre-K through Grade 12. Please check with your provider or school nurse to determine if your child is up to date.

Ah, summertime! No lunches to pack, agendas to sign or backpacks to unload. A great time to relax, rewind and re-connect as a family. While parenting is never necessarily “easy,” the summer season allows a break from the busy school routine and often offers the best opportunity for families to spend time together. Research has shown that families who consistently make time to connect with each other through such simple things like eating a meal together are significantly less likely to have children who smoke, do drugs or do poorly in school. When families find positive ways to connect with each other--be it playing catch, riding bikes or playing board games--research shows that the reported stress levels of BOTH parents and children alike is much lower than in families who spend little time interacting. Experts have found that even teenagers truly value and crave opportunities to connect with their family members, especially if it involves some type of activity. So grill some hot dogs together, throw a frisbee or two and enjoy this season of rewinding and reconnecting.

On Friday, February 10th, the Fuel Up to Play 60 Club was honored to have Erin Ranic host a “Zumba” fitness class in the middle school. About 70 students attended the “Zumba” class and were able to have fun, smile, and laugh, all while working out and improving their health. Erin Ranic resides in Springville with her husband and 3 beautiful daughters. Erin has been teaching Zumba for 4 years. She started doing Zumba because she loves to make people happy while having fun doing something that great for them. In addition, Erin teaches Zumba locally at Springville Health & Fitness, through Springville’s Community Education program at SES, and is an instructor at World Gym in Hamburg and Gowanda. Erin spreads her joy and talent for doing Zumba in so many great ways to give back to society. She also helps to build endurance with the SGI Varsity Girls Swim Team practices by putting the team through a Zumba workout. We were very honored to have Erin as a guest in our school and hope she comes back in the future for another appearance. Gabrielle Walter, a Western New York native recently crowned Miss New York State, visited with Colden and Springville Elementary students as part of “Career Day” for 4th and 5th graders. Currently studying to be a tax litigation attorney at the University at Buffalo, Miss Walter also founded “DreamUp America”, a motivational program to encourage young people to stay motivated, set goals, believe in themselves and to aim high. Our district was the first she has had the opportunity to visit with since being crowned Miss New York State. More than a dozen other community members and district parents also visited with our students to talk about their careers during this very special day. Many, many thanks to all who participated!

In 1996, General Mills wanted to create a program to help support education and benefit America’s schools – and so, Box Tops for Education™ was born. The program was such a huge success that it soon expanded across the nation. By 1998, more than 30,000 schools were clipping Box Tops and earning cash to buy the things they needed: books, computers, playground equipment and more. As the program expanded, school earnings increased. By 2010, schools across the nation had earned over $320 million. Today, America’s schools have earned over $800 million, and you can find Box Tops on hundreds of products throughout the grocery store and online.

We need your help over the summer! When you purchase participating products, clip the Box Top for Education label, save them in a plastic baggie or jar, and

turn them all in when your child goes back to school in September. Your involvement is key to the success of our Box Tops for Education™ program. Thank you for volunteering to help our school and community!

SGI Raises Over $10,000 for Bald For Bucks

Congratulations to all who participated in Bald for Bucks 2017. Over 50 students participated in the event raising over $10,000. The collected money will be donated to Roswell Park Cancer Institute. Thank you for your support from Keaton Wnuk, Nate Cudney and the Springville Middle School Family.

Each year, seniors in Mr. Wikman’s economics classes compete in a semester long virtual stock market competition. Students start with $100,000 in virtual money and buy and sell stocks using real-time information in an attempt to build value in their portfolio throughout the semester. The student with the highest value portfolio at the end of each semester wins a $100 cash prize that is donated by Emerling Ford and Emerling Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and RAM of Springville. This project is an exercise in understanding the various forces that impact the stock market and the importance of including such factors as world events when investing. The simulation requires a great deal of attention to detail and the ability to manage a diverse number of stocks over a 20 week period. The spring 2017 semester winner was Katherine Clark who finished the game with a portfolio value of $157,224. Congratulations, Katherine!

Mr. Steve Tasker, former special teams football player with the Buffalo Bill’s, 7x Pro Bowl and 1993 MVP recipient, visited Springville Elementary on June 1 to talk to our second grade students about his life experiences. From growing up in a small town, to being

one of the smallest kids in his class, he aimed big and achieved his goals through hard work and trying his best. His message to the students was just that…Never give up on your dreams, work hard, and set your goals high!!

The following day, this group of second graders also toured New Era Field in Orchard Park and experienced what it was like to play directly on the turf of what was formally known as Ralph Wilson Stadium.

The Kindergarten students at Colden Elementary School had their annual Parent’s Day Musical on Friday, May 12th. The children sang songs from the play “The Little Engine that Could Sing” by Carol Kaplan-Lyss & Janet Hill.

Back on September 7th, 2016, the incoming Sixth Graders celebrated the second day of an exciting school year with this photo. They were enjoying getting to know their new school, teachers, and classmates from our two different elementary schools. For any sixth grader coming to the middle school, there may be some anxiety about their new surroundings and new expectations. No worries, upcoming class of 2024! The teachers, staff, and upper classmen will do their best to make sure you have all your questions answered and will guide you on your way to being successful here in the middle! We will spend the first few days getting organized, finding our way around the building and familiarizing ourselves with all the new faces. Have a great, stress free summer. Can’t wait to meet you!

Parent’s Day at CES Sixth Grade Updates

SES Kindergarten Musical On May 4th, the SES kindergarten classes performed the musical, Friendly Neighborhood Helpers, for their families!

The children enjoyed singing a variety of songs that centered around the different occupations within a town.

With special thanks to Lieutenant N. Budney, the SES students learned all about the Springville Police Department on Thursday, May 18. The students were able to tour the police cars and go inside the special “BearCat” (Ballistic Engineered Armored Response Counter Attack Truck) that is used by law enforcement agencies for

transport of SWAT officers. Also, an amazing K-9 demonstration was given and the students learned about the training process of the dogs, including basic obedience, sociability, agility, tracking and handler protection.

Springville Middle School held its ears as the mortar and cannon of Reynold’s Battery fired off their artillery to end a day of re-enactment for the students on June 2. The Reynold’s Battery has about 50 active re-enactors with a primary base in Lockport and the Finger Lakes Region. They attend Civil War re-enactments throughout New York and Pennsylvania, Maryland, Virginia and West Virginia. The group also performs for school districts and youth organizations. For schools, the re-enactors set up stations that the students rotate through, from marching, medical, camp life, blacksmith, Underground Railroad quilt code, cannon talk, cooking, and dance to music. The re-enactors research his or her area of expertise extensively and many make their own reproduction artifacts. Reynold’s Battery is recognized by the N.Y.S.

Board of Regents and the Commissioner of Education for their educational programs they have presented for the past 33 years. Their visit has become an annual event at the Middle School. Former Principal and current Coordinator of Ancillary Student Support Services John Baronich is the group’s blacksmith.

The 2nd Grade classes from Springville Elementary enjoyed a walking field trip to Mercy Flight on June 13th. The students were excited to learn about Mercy Flight and to be shown the helicopter, ambulance, and fly car while they were there. Thank you Mercy Flight for all that you do in our community!

On Friday, June 9th members of the Class of 2018 presented a check for $125.00 to the Children’s League as part of their community service project at SGI High. The Junior class collected a total of 2,500 recyclable cans and bottles over the course of the school year and donated the funds to the Children’s League. Those who are interested can donate their own cans and bottles to the Class of 2019 at the Can Man, located at 101 Waverly St.

On April 27, a group of SGI students embarked on a cetacean expedition in search of humpback whales. The students spent three days with naturalists learning the different aspects of marine biology. They collected specimens from tidal zones and bay dredging, and kayaked into the unique salt marsh ecosystem. The climax of the trip was seeing the leviathans of the sea, the long anticipated humpback whales. Overall they photographed and collected data on nine whales, one named Pipette (how appropriate for a science student). The data is submitted to a database that tracks the migration of these whales. The students stayed in cabins at a sea camp on the ocean to continue their natural encounters into the evening. Prior to embarking on this expedition, the students had attended marine biology classes and joined in after school dissection activities to have exposure to this unique and fragile environment, thus hopeful in instilling a feeling of stewardship. On the last day of the excursion, the students visited the world famous New England Aquarium in Boston, MA, to explore all types of sea life. Overall the students had a WHALE OF A TIME!

Students and StaffParticipate in Kids Day

WNY Gardener Sally Cunningham visits students at SES

SGI students and staff participated in Buffalo News Kids Day on Tuesday, April 25th. This is the 35th year of the event which raises money for Women and Children’s Hospital of Buffalo, Cradle Beach and children of Western New York. The students and staff sold 325 papers for a total of $651.72. Since 1983, Kids Day contributions have totaled more than $4.6 million – helping children all across Western New York.

The 2nd grade team at SES had WNY gardener Sally Cunningham do a planting activity with the students on Thursday April 20th. This hands-on demonstration with the kids involved learning about herbs, and how they are used for flavoring, fragrance and sometimes medicines or teas. Each kid had their own little plastic pot, filled it with potting soil, and dug right in. With careful instructions, they planted little seedlings of oregano, basil, and lavender. Some herb recipes and care instructions went home to parents. The kids also took extra soil mix home in baggies with some sunflower seeds and growing instructions for growing at home as well. Sally helped our 2nd graders discover gardening, how to identify herbs by their smell, and gentleness and compassion for little living things. Dairy Festival 2017

The Springville GI Transportation Department participated in this year’s Dairy Festival with a school bus in the parade on Saturday, and also a school bus on the Dairy Festival Grounds. Both buses were decorated with artwork from SES and CES depicting school bus safety. Transportation Supervisor Ann Rugg with bus drivers Suzanne Ehlers, Linda Hill, Deb King, Karen Mang and Phil Owen walked in the parade handing out candy. Bus drivers Brian Becker, Suzanne Ehlers, Cristina Enser, Rob Forster and Jen Kramer manned the bus at the HS. They spent time with students, preschoolers and parents talking about safety in and around the school bus. Students at SES and CES drew pictures about school bus safety and the pictures were displayed on the sides of the school buses. The winners of the poster contest were: from SES Charlie Gorecki, Mathew Arrington, Marley Lillis and Faith Snashell, and from CES Cole Bowman, Reid Holland and Brynn Beuler. Congratulations to all the winners of a new backpack of school supplies. Many students and parents stopped by to see their artwork. Students and parents were also able to vote for their favorite SES and CES bus drivers. Winners were Chris Riter Rt. 17 and Cristina Enser Rt. 240 from SES, and Joyce Sion Rt. 2 from CES. AP Calculus StudentsGive Back

Ms. Pattison’s AP Calculus class took their AP exam on May 9th, 2017. They have been working on a project to give back to our school community by helping out some 9th grade Algebra students get ready for their final exams. Madisyn Emley and Erin Jurkowski have been creating review videos for students to watch at home. Carrie Dickinson, Isobel Hooker, Sadie Kirkham, Devin Maul, Haley Patterson, and Jamie Slotman are tutoring students in Mrs. Bain’s period 6 Algebra class and Mrs. Fuller’s period 6 Algebra 1A class.

Colden Elementary Student Council members were ‘gardeners for a day’ by planting flowers to beautify our school grounds. They planted flowers in five containers to display in the front of the CES building. Colden Elementary employee “Mr. Tim” Coonly gave hints on how to plant these lovely flowers. Everyone had dirty hands and lots of fun planting!

On the last full day of school, the first grade students from SES had the opportunity to walk to our local Springville Spray Park. They ate a picnic lunch in the park and had the opportunity to enjoy playing and splashing at the park with their friends. It turned out to be a great day filled with many smiles, and several parents joined in the fun for this special and memorable field trip!

The first graders at Springville Elementary celebrated their annual Muffins for Moms gathering on Friday, May 12. Many mothers, aunts, and grandmothers joined the students as they sang special songs and shared a muffin together. We are all grateful for the wonderful women in our lives and appreciate all that they do!

The SGI school district recently had an opportunity to celebrate the success and hard work for many of our student-athletes during the June 1st awards celebration held in the HS auditorium. Shown to the right, are individuals – listed with their accomplishment, who either established or broke a school record within their respective sport. Additionally, the student athletes who qualified through exceptional individual effort to represent Springville and Section 6 in state competition were also recognized in receiving a certificate. Lastly, the athletic department announced the 2016-17 Pat Haddad recipients; most athletic male and female in congratulating Ian Baker and Caroline Dickinson. We’d also like to acknowledge the tremendous support of the coaches, community and parents in continually providing incredible opportunities for our kids to compete and be successful! Congratulations to Julia Krzemien who was named a First Team All ECIC IV Player for 2017. Julia, a top player on the Lady Griffins basketball team came back from a knee injury this season but was able to lead the team in points, assists, rebounds and steals. A class of 2017 graduate Julia will leave SGI with an amazing accomplishment and story for future SGI athletes.

On Friday, April 28th, the SGI Boys Track Team competed at the Dunkirk Invitational. While personal best performances were had by many, Griffins Topher Elkins ran a career best 400 meter dash and placed 1st overall. Not far behind was Nick Abdo with his season best time and a 2nd place finish. In the field events Jarod Reese took 2nd place in the high jump going 5’6” and just missing 5’8”. Good job Griffins!

Congratulations to SGI sophomore Michael Spagnola for earning recognition as an ECIC Division IV Singles All Star for tennis. Michael played first singles for the Griffins the entire year finishing with a record of 11 wins and 3 losses. Great Job, Michael!

Congratulations to McKenzie Galvin for scoring her 100th career goal against Niagara Falls High School on Friday, May 5th. Coach Zielen-Ersing describes McKenzie as a fantastic leader both on the field and in the classroom. One of the Varsity Lacrosse Team’s captains, McKenzie, always gives 100% of her effort. She is a role model who is constantly working to improve the team as a whole and a positive role model for everyone surrounding her.

The annual Drive Your Tractor to School Day at Springville-Griffith Institute High School kicking off the beginning of Springville’s 29th Annual Western New York Dairy/Ag Festival. Parked on the high school grounds were everything from huge agricultural tractors to the humbler yard machines. The Springville Wrestling program will be hosting their annual fundraiser golf outing at Concord Crest golf course on August 5th, 2017. The event has taken place the past two years and has been a fun experience for everyone involved; all while raising funds for the team to participate in tournaments and other events throughout the year. Registration for the event begins at 1:00 pm, with a shotgun start scheduled for 2:00 pm. The cost of the event is $75.00 and includes a round of golf with cart, lunch at the turn, a steak dinner following golf, a goodie bag, and entry into raffle prizes for all contestants. For those that do not golf, we welcome anyone to join us for just the dinner portion of the event for $20. Registration deadline is July 28th.
