I hate it when my political colleagues state that manufacturing will offer good career opportunities for high school dropouts. The fact is we can't use dummies! If you are not proficient in math and science and have an associates degree, we don't have much use for you. Public education of the role of manufacturing is essential to our survival. That's where MAF comes in. MAF will become the statewide voice for manufacturers. It will beat the drum of our message to elected officials and the public at large. It will provide opportunity for other special interest manufacturing groups to join together in much the same way as the Farm Bureau. I am excited about the opportunity we have to create the Manufacturers Association of Florida. I urge you to join us--ask your company to become a Founding Member. Mark your calendar for the 2005 Manufacturing Summit December 1-2 in Orlando. I look forward to your joining me in making MAF a statewide success!

MAF - A Statewide VoiceAugust 1 begins a concentrated drive to form the Manufacturers Association of Florida (MAF). It will be a statewideorganization anchored by the regional manufacturing associations throughout Florida.

I have been meeting with colleagues from other parts of Florida since 1994. We have progressed from informal meetings tomore formal quarterly meetings. Two years ago, we coordinated a unified presentation throughout the state on theimportance of manufacturing to Florida's economy. As a result, Governor Jeb Bush became a strong supporter. He committedresources through Enterprise Florida that created the 2004 Manufacturing Summit, and has accelerated the formation of MAF.

Florida's 17,000 manufacturers that employ 400,000 workers certainly understand their contribution to the local, state, and national economies. We know that our average annual wage is more than $40,000. We know that our capital investment inabsolute terms and dollars per employee is far above average. We know that we are the leading edge in developinginternational trade and its key to Florida's global presence. We know that we hold a major key to solving Florida's majorproblem of low per capita income. We know that our industry demands a highly skilled, educated, technically competentworkforce. We know that our facilities rival the most advanced in the world.

However, the public doesn't know manufacturing. Its image is still the 1930's sweatshop with emphasis on brawn not brain. Ihate it when my political colleagues state that manufacturing will offer good career opportunities for high school dropouts. Thefact is we can't use dummies! If you are not proficient in math and science and have an associates degree, we don't havemuch use for you.

Public education of the role of manufacturing is essential to our survival. That's where MAF comes in. MAF will become thestatewide voice for manufacturers. It will beat the drum of our message to elected officials and the public at large. It willprovide opportunity for other special interest manufacturing groups to join together in much the same way as the Farm Bureau.

I am excited about the opportunity we have to create the Manufacturers Association of Florida. I urge you to join us--ask yourcompany to become a Founding Member. Mark your calendar for the 2005 Manufacturing Summit December 1-2 in Orlando. Ilook forward to your joining me in making MAF a statewide success!

DOR - Natural Gas Tax TipSellers of natural gas may apply for tax amnesty between June 8, 2005, and January 1, 2006, for the gross receipts tax due on sales made prior to January 1, 2006. Purchasers of natural gas who are not sellers of natural gas should not apply for amnesty because the sellers (not the purchasers) are liable to the state for payment of the tax. However, purchasers of natural gas may want to encourage sellers to apply for the amnesty. As you know, manufacturers are now exempt from the gross receipts tax on natural gas.

The Florida Dept. of Revenue has issued its guidance on applying for amnesty for back taxes on natural gas. FDOR Tax Information Publication (TIP) No. 05B06-01 dated June 22 can be reviewed [here.]
