Over those 65 years so many Good Times and Salesboy (newsletter preceding Good Times) articles were written by my father, Milt Hinden, myself and many guest authors as well. I find myself perusing the archives often and enjoy reading so many articles about our history as well as business practices. The following article was written by Milt Hinden 50 years ago and you will see that business strategy at Duro Dyne hasn’t changed a bit. These are the standards that David Krupnick and Pat Rossetto need to uphold in the continuous development of new profitable products to offer the trade and our loyal distributors! A number of years ago, perhaps eight or ten, I chanced to meet one of our fellow manufactures. During a lull in our conver- sation, he slowly tilted his head back so that his half-closed eyes gazed reverently at the Heavens above, and as the fingers of both his hands crossed, he breathed a half sigh and said, “If only another product like the flexible connector would come along…” Apparently, it did not “come along” for him, for his company’s line of products has remained remarkably stable since he entered his plea for expansion. His distrib- utors still sell the same products and if they are lucky, they have at best, maintained the same volume on his products. “Another product like the flexible connector”… what does that mean? To me, it means some- thing new which enables the contractor to improve the quality of, and effect savings in cost over previous methods of performing a particular task. Believe me, developing such a product is no easy task, even for the most talented and cooperative of “Genies.” So what is a manufacturer to do when the “Genie” can’t come through? STUDY… THINK and WORK… then for good luck, cross your fingers just to enlist the aid of that little extra undefinable assistance which often spells the difference between success and failure. Study problems, think of possible solutions and work to find the best answer. So far, this system has worked well for us. Since the conversation with our "fellow manufacturer” we have been able to provide our distributors with a number of “products like Flexible Connector.” The proof of the value is seen easily when we look at our average distributor’s annual purchase from Duro Dyne. I would say that since my reported conversation, this increase was WELL OVER 500%! How come? Many reasons but primarily, new… and we mean, “NEW” products. PROBLEM - Improve on the sheet metal screw. SOLUTION - Drill Screws - “A Duro Dyne Original.” PROBLEM - Speed up insulation fastening. SOLUTION - Pinspotter - “A Duro Dyne Original.” PROBLEM - An ideal, low cost residential connector fabric. SOLUTION - Glasseal - “A Duro Dyne Original.” PROBLEM - To get new products introduced and sold. SOLUTION - Key Distributors -”A Duro Dyne Original.” For 1968, we have 4 NEW PRODUCTS for you. We have not, however been able to come up with a fifth, so… HAS ANYONE SEEN “GENIE"?
