Ahoy SLYC. Our intrepid sailors led by Cruising Captain Lettie Fuller

have just returned from our annual Santa Barbara to Channel Island cruise. We loaded up Thursday, sailed over Friday with light winds and anchored at Prisoner harbor to play in the water, hike and dine. I will leave details to others, but we returned Sunday to the coast with light winds again.

The Flagship committee has now oriented most of the current enrolled “Slo Sloop” sailors to “Second Wind”. “Second Wind” has been sailed far more this year than “Slo Sloop” anytime recently. This could not have been accomplished without the help of orientation skippers Marty Fuller and Roger Briggs. They have assisted with keeping the orientations going, and tailoring to varying skill levels and physical abilities.

Contact myself or Marty if you have any questions. I wish to thank Flag Member John Maulhardt for his special donation of $500 to the fundraising cause. Series just offshore of the club. On October 9th, we’ll have a Wet Wednesday slideshow presentation. Members Reid Hester and Shannon Donahue will present a slideshow of their Nova Scotia trip and Michael and Carol Dobrzensky will share photos from their trip to Africa. It will be a fascinating and inspirational evening! Also, don’t forget the SLYC’s annual Halloween potluck and dance party. It’s always been great fun for all who attend!

Lastly…Just a kind reminder for those who have not yet signed up for their volunteer duties. We’re running out of time to get you signed up for your annual obligations. We still have several positions available to choose from between now and the end of the year. For all of you, thank you for your service to the club and enjoy the rest of this year’s organized events.

See you at the club or on the water,—Jim h

Cruising News

by Lettie Fuller, Cruising Captain

Ahoy Members! Our annual Santa Cruz Island trip was a great

success! On September 13th, six boats crossed the channel in very calm seas. There was no wind and no swells. This was the smoothest crossing we have done in years. The following boats and crew that came to the islands were “Amigos”, “Athena”,

“Alchemy”, “Gran Cru”, “Cloud 9”, and “Wind Star”. We had 18 members aboard “Amigos” Friday evening in their Hawaiian shirts with their favorite boat drinks in hand for our themed dinner “It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere.” We enjoyed a full harvest moon glowing in the horizon and lots of boat drinks, flatbreads, salads, sausages, brownies, and good company. Thank you to Jean Dyer, Kristin Rasmussen, and Carol Dobrzensky for making salads, and brownies. They were delicious. Bill Dyer made his special drink the

“PainKiller” that was the most popular drink of the evening. Thanks for sharing with everyone.

On Saturday people hiked, paddled, swam, and hung-out

on “Amigos 3 Island” (our ten man floaty toy, pictured above) and enjoyed the warm weather. “Amigos 3 Island”

provided laughs and entertainment for the entire day, and was a fun way to cool off on a warm Saturday afternoon.

The annual Santa Cruz Island cruise provides an enjoyable boating experience and creates new memories each year. Join us next time.

Our last cruising event of the year is our trip to the Sea of Cortez starting November 13th thru November 23rd. We have 4 catamarans chartered, 1 hired captain and 4 hired cooks. We are

looking forward to our trip since we will not have to cook. Enjoy our Indian Summer while it lasts, and get out on

water this beautiful weather while it lasts. Happy Sailing,

—Lettie h
