MusicDON GIOVANNI: AN INTRODUCTION TO MOZART’S OPERADon Giovanni is the second collaboration between Mozart and the librettist Lorenzo da Ponte – one of the greatest creative partnerships of all time. Da Ponte described his

inspiration for this opera as Dante’s Inferno, a beautiful 16-year-old girl and good Spanish wine. Mozart’s music is extraordinary for the way it sparkles with comedy while simultaneously exploring profound human feeling. First performed in Prague in 1787, it has been a firm favourite with audiences ever since. This seminar introduces Mozart’s opera, Don Giovanni, which features in the New Zealand Opera’s 2014 programme at the St James Theatre, Wellington, from 11–18 October.Peter Walls is Emeritus Professor of Music at Victoria University. He is the author of History, Imagination and the Performance of Music and many other books and articles. Among other operas, he has conducted Mozart’s Don Giovanni, Marriage of Figaro, The Magic Flute and The Impresario.

Art History cont...THE SEDUCTION Of THE MEDITERRANEAN: LIfE, LOVE AND ART fROM CEZANNE TO PICASSOThis course examines the golden age of post-Impressionist painting at the turn of the 20th century and considers the lives and works of artists who settled in the provinces of Southern France, collectively known as the ‘Midi’. From Catalonia to Provence, artists with sometimes radically different approaches to painting grappled with the bright southern light, so different from the soft northern light that inspired much Impressionist painting. Drawn to the mild Mediterranean climate and the raw beauty of the region’s unspoilt landscapes and coastlines, artists from Cezanne to Picasso refined new techniques and created masterpieces that are today considered the cornerstones of Modernity. Wendy Joyce is a visiting academic at Victoria University. She holds a PhD in 19th-century French studies from Princeton University and has lectured at universities in France, England and Australia. She also holds an MA in Creative Writing from Victoria University’s International Institute of Modern Letters.

HistorybEHIND THE fACADES: VICTORIAN wELLINGTONOur Victorian buildings have value today, not just because of a different aesthetic, but because of what they tell us about how we came to be where we are now and the people who helped get

us here. They enhance our ‘sense of place’ and of being part of something more than a transitory, urban existence. These lectures and walking tour aim to enhance your appreciation of Wellington’s remaining Victorian buildings by going behind their facades to set them in their original context and bring them to life. Joanna Newman is a consultant in archives and records management. She is Convenor of the Mount Victoria Historical Society and has been involved in research, writing articles and taking guided walks for the Society since 1999.

who invented them, where, when and why? In this one-off lecture you will discover their surprising origins.Peter Clemerson graduated BSc from Manchester University (UK) and worked in the information technology industry. He completed his MA in Psychology at Massey University, and expects to submit his PhD thesis in evolutionary psychology, also at Massey, in early 2015.
