When a soldier committed suicide in 2008, his parents insisted that the investigation of his death was flawed.

On Tuesday, the Military Police Complaints Commission released its report on the handling of Cpl. Stuart Langridge’s death.

It found that there were a number of failures in the investigations by the Canadian Forces National Inves-tigation Service.

Langridge hanged himself in his barracks at CFB Edmonton on March 15, 2008.

Three investigations took place, but Langridge’s parents, Sheila and Shaun Fynes, Victoria residents, were not satisfied with how they were conducted and filed a com-plaint to the military police com-plaints commission.

Although a suicide note was left addressed to the Fynes with a spe-cial request regarding his funeral, no one informed them about its exis-tence or its contents until May 22,

2009.“The Commission found signifi-

cant deficiencies in the investiga-tions conducted by the Canadian Forces National Investigation Ser-vice and unacceptable errors in the way the military police interacted with the Fynes, particularly in the mishandling of Cpl Langridge’s sui-cide note,” said Glenn Stannard, chair of the military police com-plaints commission.

Part of the CFNIS’ failure in the investigation of Langridge’s death is due to lack of experience, accord-

ing to the MPCC report. The CFNIS only started conducting domestic sudden death investigations in 2005.

Sheila Fynes, Langridge’s mother, said the fight is not over.

“We sincerely hope that this is not the end of our journey, but rather the beginning of a fitting legacy for Stu,” said Fynes at a news confer-ence on Parliament Hill, Tuesday.

Fynes said she hopes to be involved in changes in how the military investigates non-combat deaths.

A new team at the City of Victoria will bring together staff from different depart-ments in an effort to com-plete projects outlined in council’s strategic plan.

The “interdisciplinary project team” will consist of three people, most likely from the engineering, parks and recreation and planning departments, with support from civic engagement, said Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps.

“They will be tasked with undertaking one of the actions that’s in the strate-gic plan and then they will be in charge of delivering that project to comple-tion, then get that checked off and they’ll move onto another project,” said Helps. “The idea is that we’re all supposed to be focused together to serve the public.”

This new team will cost

up to $300,000 a year, but Helps said this will not be an added cost because four managers have been let go that will not be replaced.

“If we redeploy our resources in an innovative way, we can actually save a lot of money.”

Helps said the team’s actions and outcomes will be measured at least annu-ally to monitor its success.

“We expect that team to deliver results, not just do the same old thing.”

The idea for this team came from staff after coun-cil submitted the city’s draft strategic plan.

“It’s an ambitious plan, and [staff] recommended that in order to do this, [they] felt like we could best use resources if we had an interdepartmental team focused on delivering this objectives, rather than just having us working in silos.”

Good news for job hunters. The latest employment survey says

Victoria will see a modest hiring spike for the upcoming quarter from April to June.

Eighty-three per cent of employers also plan to maintain their current staff-ing levels.

“Survey data reveals that 13 per cent of employers plan to hire for the upcom-ing quarter while three per cent antici-pate cutbacks,” said Jeff Polkinghorne of Manpower’s Vancouver office.

The industries with the most openings will be finance, insurance and real estate. The survey estimates that 19 per cent of employers in those fields will be looking to hire.

Greater Victoria Chamber of Com-merce vice-chair Al Hasham says it’s not just all about the new workers.

“Aside from getting new workers, we need to retain the ones we have.”

A big problem when trying to attract new workers to Victoria is housing.

“We have to make sure we can provide affordable housing and continue to grow the economy,” Hasham said.

For the rest of Canada, the boom has already hit. Quebec, Alberta, New Bruns-wick and Prince Edward Island saw a rise in employment in January.

ori Herron likes to run. A lot.The Fernwood resident thinks

nothing of running for hours on end. Over the last nine years, she’s competed in more than 20 ultramarathons, ranging from 50

kilometres to 120 miles.Don’t think these races are a walk in

park. Most of her races are tough trail runs, traversing mountain passes, river and rocky terrain.

And it’s all in fun.“I’ve not yet had a bad race, despite

having terrible blisters and throwing up,” says Herron, 55, a Canada Post employee.

“I guess some people would classify that as awful, but I’ve never mentally got to a place where I’ve been defeated.”

Herron got involved in ultramarathon running differently than many others in her sport. While most runners begin with 5, 10, even 21 kilometres races, she took on the Great Walk – a 64.5-kilometre run from Gold River to Tahsis.

Her running career began when a few women got together and decided to start running.

“It seemed like a fun thing to do with a group of fun ladies,” Herron recalls.

The race training didn’t start out as planned.

“It was very difficult. I can vividly recall my first run,” she says. “I went out by myself. I don’t know if I got an entire block in before I had to start walking. It was hard.”

It didn’t take long before those miles got easier and she was ready to take on the Great Walk. The achievement from that event was that she was able to run most of it.

She then made her mind up to run her first marathon before she hit 40. Seven months later, she competed in the Victoria Marathon and before she knew it had 19 more on her resume – each time getting a little faster.

Herron qualified for the much-heralded Boston Marathon, and then decided to put more of her efforts into ultramarathons.

She got involved in trail running when her ex-husband would come home from a run lauding about being out the woods, splashing through creeks and mud.

She turned out for a run with a trail group led by Mike (The Trail Guy) Suminski and was hooked.

“There was just something about being in the forest that was very therapeutic,” Herron says.

“It was just so much fun. You didn’t have to run up every hill. You could walk and it was OK. I love mud up to my knees. The

dirtier the better.”Soon, she turned all her efforts to trail

running and ultramarathons.Herron admits she isn’t overly fast as

a runner, but has the mental capacity to tackle any distance.

Her proudest achievement, so far, was the Hurt 100, a 100-mile race in Hawaii, considered

one of the toughest runs in North America, which she competed in January 2014.

A total of 132 competitors took part in that race, with only 52 finishing. Herron was the only Canadian woman and the oldest woman to finish.

“It’s just a hard, hard race. You are constantly going up or going down,” says Herron, who finished the race in 35 hours.

Suminski, who has run with Herron since 2006, says she has incredible athletic ability and a will to compete.

“Her accomplishments are unparalleled, not only here, but down in the States, too,” he says.

For Herron, it’s still about the challenge.“These are huge accomplishments,

but there is still this thing in your head where you’re thinking, ‘ah, maybe I should have been faster. I struggle with it, but I feel quite adamant that I have nothing to prove.”

Victoria man killed in Langford crash

A Victoria man was killed Sunday when his pickup truck left the roadway and struck trees on Veterans Memorial Parkway near Goldstream Avenue in Langford.

Dead is Wesley McKay, 68.

McKay was transported to Victoria General Hospital but could not be resuscitated.

The B.C. Coroners Service and RCMP continue to investigate the death, including the possibility that it was precipitated by a medical condition.

Police, citizen rein in suspected thief

A sharp-eyed citizen and a fleet-footed Victoria police officer are being credited with nabbing a suspected thief earlier this week.

At approximately 7 p.m. on Sunday, officers were called to the 900-block of Yates Street after the caller spotted her boyfriend’s stolen bike. She had followed the man on the bike from the 900-block of Pandora Avenue.

When officers arrived on scene, the caller relayed a detailed description of the suspect. As the officer and caller were talking, the suspect came out of a store and hopped on the bike.

A police chase ensued and the suspect arrested.

Allan Saari, a 46-year-old Victoria man, was charged with possession of stolen property under $5,000 and breaching of his previous court orders.

This spring, the streets of downtown Victoria will be filled with racers competing in challenges that test team-work, problem-solving skills and physical fitness.

The four hour UrbaCity Challenge takes place June 7.

“It’s an urban adventure race through downtown Vic-toria,” said Priya Manhas, project coordinator.

Last year, the race drew 200 participants and Manhas said they are expecting around 300 this year.

Teams of two are divided into Brain, Brawn and Ultra categories.

Brain focuses more on problem-solving challenges and has a shorter course and Brawn has more physi-cal activities and a larger course.

Ultra is a combination of the two, so teams will have to take on Brain and Brawn challenges.

Participants can also make teams of four, which is known as the corporate category; however, it is open

to anyone. Those challenges will focus more on communi-cation and teamwork.

Challenges take place at a variety of local businesses and locations in the city. For example, last year, partici-pants had to learn activities such as juggling from busk-ers and complete the activi-ties up to the buskers’ stan-dards. Another challenge involved a ring toss with Vic-toria Soda Works in the Inner Harbour.

The race course is top secret until teams are given a map on the day of the race.

“It’ all about completing it in the shortest amount of

time,” said Manhas. “It’s up to you to be strategic on where you’re going to go and how you map it out.”

Teams of two have a mini-mum fundraising goal of $100, and teams of four have a minimum goal of $400.

All the money goes toward the Prostate Centre, a Vic-toria resource for men and their families battling pros-tate cancer.

Last year, UrbaCity Chal-lenge raised more than $37,000, and this year the goal is to raise $50,000.

Financial disputes involving less than $10,000 will soon be directed to an online “civil resolution tribunal,” in an effort by the B.C. government to keep them from clogging up the courts.

The new tribunal will also provide a place to resolve strata disputes, which now have only the costly B.C. Supreme Court option if strata councils can’t resolve them, Justice Minister Suzanne Anton said.

Anton presented legislation Tuesday to create the new tri-bunal, which is to come into effect later this year. She said it will begin as a voluntary option, and later a deposit will be required for those who want to go directly to court instead.

Anton said B.C. is the first jurisdiction in the world to establish an online dis-pute resolution tribunal. The government estimates that 40,000 people a year will eventually use the tribunal.

“The really big change for stratas is that there is now a place for minor strata issues to go to,” Anton said. “Everybody knows somebody who has been in a strata nightmare. Often it’s about some-thing fairly minor, like a tree or a parking spot. There hasn’t been a forum to have a resolution to those disputes.”

The tribunal will operate in three stages.

The first is an application submitted to a website describing the claim, with an opportunity for response from the other party. That service will be offered free, and includes information and self-help suggestions to settle the dispute without further intervention.

If that fails, the second stage would bring in a media-tor to seek an agreed settle-ment of the dispute. The third stage would be sending the dispute to a tribunal member for arbitration. Fees for the second two stages have not yet been established.

Tony Gioventu, executive director of the non-profit Condominium Home Owners

Association of B.C., welcomed the new approach. But he cautioned there will be a learning curve for strata councils.

“Education will be essential and CHOA is committed to working with the strata community to ensure the creation of a system that provides good justice in a timely manner that works for all strata corporations,” Gioventu said.

The B.C. government has used media-tion before in an effort to relieve the load on provincial and B.C. Supreme Court. The Family Law Act of 2011 was designed to encourage out-of-court settlements of property and parental responsibility dis-putes when marriages and common-law relationships end.

Nothing can bring Sheila Fyles’ son back, but she is continuing to fight for answers and change for the future.

After Cpl. Stuart Langridge hanged himself on March 15, 2008, the Canadian Forces National Investigation Service launched three investigations that were botched from the start.

A report released Tuesday by the Military Police Complaints Commission outlines the series of mistakes made by the CFNIS following Langridge’s death.

One of these mistakes was withholding a suicide note from Langridge’s parents for 14 months, for reasons that still have yet to be explained.

The note, addressed to the Fyles, contained a special request for a private, family funeral as opposed to a military one.

Instead, the Fyles were kept in the dark and were not allowed control over funeral arrangements.

Canadian Forces Provost Marshal Rob Delaney said in a statement that mistakes were made in the investigation and that he is committed to learning from those mistakes.

Yet there are still no answers to why these mistakes happened, and why it has taken this long to recognize them.

Shaun and Sheila Fyles are two grieving parents that were caught in the middle of a bureaucratic mess.

Sheila has made it clear that she is willing to meet with Defence Minister Jason Kenney to discuss changes that need to be made in non-combat deaths.

She has been fighting this battle for seven years now, and the government would be remiss if it did not use her knowledge and experience to improve the system.

It is time to take action and implement solutions.

Readers respond: police, sidewalk etiquette, cycling

Social media shapes wrong view of police

There has been a video going viral on Facebook of a woman getting arrested downtown by two Victoria police officers.

In this video, the lady resists being arrested and it results in one of the police officers kneeing her.

Social media has blown this out of proportion by stating that this is police abuse. This is not police abuse; it is the act of force that police have to use for people who resist arrest.

There is actual police abuse happening a lot around the world but this is not an example of it. This makes me question how social media has shaped societies views on the police and their authority.

Education needed on sidewalk etiquette

Re: B.C. will target left-lane huggers (News, March 6)

Premier Christy Clark wants

to better educate people so they know which lane to travel on B.C. roads.

While we are at it, please let us educate people about sidewalks.

I live in Victoria. During daytime hours, businessmen and others span the sidewalk three or four abreast.

These people – walking, riding or anything else – must learn to keep right when others approach them from the opposite direction. And in single file.

One directional lane is half of the sidewalk, not the whole thing! It’s just like driving your car – do you take up the whole width of the road?

Surely, we can learn this and not have to paint a line down the middle of sidewalks and paint directional arrows, as city parks workers have done on the Dallas Road sidewalk.

Owning up to Pearson’s challenge

I would like to congratulate the House of Lords in London for

passing historic legislation which requires the British government to allocate 0.7 per cent of its gross domestic product to overseas development assistance.

Why this is of such interest to Canadians is that was our prime minister, Lester Pearson, who in 1969, challenged the developed countries to achieve this level of funding to those countries less fortunate than us.

Sweden, the Netherlands, Norway, Denmark, Luxemburg and now Britain have achieved that target. Unfortunately, despite promises by several governments, Canada is still below 0.3 percent.

Perhaps it is time for us to pass such a law in Ottawa and honour the memory of a great man.

Pandora bike plan‘stupidest’ idea yet

Re: Protected bike lanes eyed for Pandora (News, March 4)

I have been cycling, safely,

with other traffic for almost 80 years (and nearly 40 in Victoria.)

I think the proposal to do a “protected” two-way bike lane on Pandora Avenue is the stupidest thing I’ve heard of in years.

First of  all, how is a cyclist going to get to business on the other side of the street? Further, sorting out rights of way at intersections would be a nightmare.

We have traffic laws which expressly recognize cyclists as having  the same rights and responsibilities as drivers of motor vehicles. We all go with the flow, using the same signals. Heaven forbid that we should be subject to separate traffic signals as they are in Holland and Denmark. That would really slow down the flow of traffic.

I’d much rather go around the block, as usual, to get back to some store on the one way street going the other way!

This whole thing makes me wonder what weird arrangement they’re planning for the new bridge?

Rallying for TibetMore than 50 Tibetans from Victoria, Duncan and Vancouver gathered in a rally for a Free Tibet at the B.C. legislature on Saturday. Victoria has welcomed over 20 new Tibetan residents in the last 18 months, swelling the local population to 40. March 10 marks the annual commemoration of the Tibetan uprising in 1959. The event was sponsored by the Canada Tibet Committee.

A cross-Canada Protect the Pollinators Tour kicks off Tuesday (March 17) in Victoria.

The tour raises awareness about bees and pollinators and the negative effect of pesticides.

Pesticides not only kill bees and pollinators, but also insects, birds and

aquatic life. Guests will have the chance to talk

to beekeepers, listen to scientists and experts and watch videos.

The event takes place from 7 to 9 p.m. at Atomique Productions at 1501 Douglas St., in Victoria.

Ford an Expedition to eleganceThe popular Ford Expedi-tion gets a makeover this model year, bringing this 2015 version into a differ-ent class of elegance.

Looks:A completely updated front end aligns itself with the Super-Duty and the new F150.I like the look of the grille, large and in charge. The featured projector style headlamps with LED fog lights made the front end of the Platinum Edition tester look like a piece of jewelry!A raised power dome hood and nice bodylines certainly give this Expedition some class. The power retractable running boards are standard on this edition but I find they react too slowly for me when the door is opened. No doubt for some the boards would be a great addition while others might think of them being in the way. When you design a sport utility vehicle, it is always tough to give the back end some shape. As an engineer, you’re wor-ried about aerodynamics but in this case the designers still managed to match the back’s elegance to that of the front.

In The Cab:As you open the door, you are greeted by ambient lighting that can be customized with a selection of colors. The Platinum has leather seats, leather door trim and console accented by wood inlays. The dash is hand warped and stitched giving this cabin a very upscale look. The front bucket seats are heated and cooled. The second row folds flat along with the third row, which drops at the touch of a button. The command center controls everything from entertainment to climate.

Speaking of entertainment, the sound system is a Sony premium audio system that features 12 speakers and 390 watts of power.Safety first:Front seat mounted side airbags, safety canopy system with three row-side curtain airbags and rollover sensor. Advance-Trac with roll stability, tire pressure monitoring system, and trailer sway control are just some of the standard features.Roadworthy:The Expedition delivers on space, com-fort and functionality while driving like

a smaller SUV. Very little, if any, body roll. Steering is magnificent and easy, and responsive while changing lanes and finding a tight parking space.

Verdict:The upgrade this vehicle has received raises the quality, safety, and comfort to a new level.

Power:This vehicle comes standard with a twin turbo 3.5L EcoBoost V6 engine that puts out 365 horsepower and 420 lb ft of torque. The transmission is a six-speed se-lect shift. 4.10 gear ratio. Towing is made easy by the transmission tow/haul mode, which helps keep you from gaining too much speed when towing downhill. The engine maintains its power band while towing up a hill keeping the speed and momentum constant.

Pump frequency:1w6.2 / 11.8 L/100 km (city/highway) Warranty support:Basic, 4 years/80,000 km. Corrosion, 5 years/unlimited distance.Powertrain, 6 years/110,000 km.Safety restraint, 5 years/100,000 km.Roadside Assistance, 5 years/100,000 km.Sticker price:XLT $49,299, Limited $63,399, Platinum $65,399.

100% ELECTRIC

NISSAN LEAFPresented by

SCRAP-IT

The all-electric Nissan LEAF tells white lies!

The Nissan LEAF miraculously cut a journey in half this week.I’ll explain. I took the plug-in sedan on a 43-kilometre trip from Vancouver to Driveway HQ, on 152nd Street, in Surrey. When I set out, the screen display showed that I could drive emission-free for 146 kilometres. Now I could have taken off like an F1 supercar and street raced all the way, because electric power offers instant tire squealing torque if you press the pedal to the metal. But that’s not me. Spurred by my ecofriendly driving the previous day, the clever car had decided earlier in the day that I could do 156 kilometres on a full charge. Not boasting but that’s easily more than 20 kilometres better than the average driver can expect to achieve. Okay, maybe my head

is swelling. The big 1-4-6 winked at me. I threw the stick into ECO mode and with two flicks of the wrist pushed it into the enhanced B-mode, which puts the braking power regeneration into overdrive, so to speak.I glided silently down the road, picking up pace ever so gradually in the busy city traffic. Rolling

down the hills to Marpole, I could feel the juice from the brakes topping up that battery. On the freeway, I hit the posted speed limit and

40 minutes later pulled into HQ. The display flashed 126. I had covered 43 klicks with the power required to move the car just 20! Such fun.Next week: More on the joy of driving electric.

It would have been no great surprise if car designer Alfonso Albaisa had become a designer of stationary objects – buildings! The Infiniti Executive Design Director fell in love with design as a young boy living in Miami, FL.As he recalls his childhood, he mentions that this wasn’t the beach part of Miami that might come to mind when we think of the city. Albaisa’s father was a building architect and so as a youngster the budding designer spent a lot of time at the office.“I remember this as if it was yesterday, that the shadows would move on the streets and I’d sit in the entrance of my dad’s office playing with the little buildings and models.”Then one day, sitting on the steps of his father’s office, fate changed his life’s ambitions changed. It was then that he heard and saw it for the first time.“One day, I was seven or eight, I heard a rumbling and it pulled into the office,” Albaisa explains.“It was an E-Type Jag convertible. And that really changed it for me… It was just so beautiful. Because this was the early 70s. Miami wasn’t Justin Bieber going down the street in a Lamborghini. You never saw these these kinds of cars, so it was shocking for me, that a car could be so beautiful… And then I

started drawing cars.”From then on, he knew that designing vehicles would be in his future. Then again, that wasn’t without explora-tion into other mediums of design.Albaisa says, “Life takes its course and I really got into art also, so I studies art in the beginning.”He holds a degree from Pratt Institute in New York and he attended the Center for Creative Studies in Detroit. While still in school, Albaisa was hired by Nissan Motor Corp Inc. even before he graduat-ed and hasn’t looked back. He has been

with the company more than 25 years. “Every day is different in this company,” he explains. “My first two or three years in the group, I worked on the J30. And I did a yacht, I was designing TaylorMade golf clubs and I played beach volleyball competitively, so I had this crazy life.”He designed furniture on the side, as well.“As an artist, change causes change and changes your mind,” he states. His roles over the years have evolved, too. Albaisa joined the Nissan Design team in San Diego in 1988. From 1997,

he held a number of senior Design positions within Nissan leading up to his appointment as Design Director, Nissan Design America, in 2004.In 2007, he was appointed vice pres-

ident of Nissan Design Europe and in 2011 returned to the U.S. as vice pres-ident, Nissan Design America. In 2012, Albaisa was named design director of Nissan global Design, Nissan brand passenger cars, including Zero Emission Vehicles. That’s his current role as we’re sitting in the rear of the spacious Q70L sedan at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto. (Albaisa will be sending the Infiniti Q80 Inspiration con-cept to the Vancouver International Auto Show) lbaisa will be sending the Infiniti Q80 Inspiration concept to the Vancouver Inter-national Auto Show.Perhaps it’s an uncon-ventional setting for an interview, but then again, he’s not a partic-

ularly conventional individual! – And it’s a quiet haven from the bustle of the exterior commotion.Though he’s a veteran in his role, he tells me, “It’s quite a difficult job. You’re con-stantly an ambassador for the dreams of your people.”He adds, “Ideas are not demonstrable. You’re always worried that the call is going to come before the idea is ready to be shown. This is probably the only thing that really worries me. I have a lot of really talented people and I want to keep there.”Aside from the same emotions that we all feel concerning our respective roles at our workplace, he embraces the changes, the ups and downs and the no-tion to create brand unification through the sketches on a notepad. When it comes to describing his role, Albaisa remarks, “I still feel like I just started.”

Aero 8 is a blast from the pastThe all-new Morgan Aero 8 draws its design inspiration from the popular British roadsters from the 1960s.But the similarities between the new 8 and those cars from the past ends with the looks because the Aero 8 is reliable! – It’s powered by a BMW V8 engine capable of propelling the two-seater from zero to 100 km/h in 4.5 seconds. Prices later but it won’t be available here – sadly.

Hollywood star Tom Cruise has driven dozens of cars in his 40-plus movies. Here are the top five coolest cars featured in movies:“Vanilla Sky”: In this reality warping, romantic drama, Tom plays David Aames — the head of a New York publishing firm with access to whatever he pleases. In the opening scene, Cruise drives a Ferrari 250 GTO replica through a deserted New York City, ultimately ending in Times Square. Aames’ daily driver throughout the film is a1967 Ford Mustang, and after he falls in love with a different woman, his ex-girlfriend Julie (played by Cameron Diaz) tries to kill them both by driving off a bridge in her 1970 Buick Skylark.“Rain Man”: After his father’s death, Charlie Babbitt (played by Cruise), a grey market sports

car dealer (seen importing Countaches in the film’s opening), flies home to Ohio to settle the estate. After learning he has an older brother, Raymond (Dustin Hoffman), who is inheriting the full estate, the two set out on a cross-country road trip back to California in their father’s 1949 Buick Roadmaster.“Jack Reacher”: Tom plays Jack Reacher, an ex-Army MP who is investigating the murder of five innocent victims of a sniper shooting. The real high-light of the film is a six-minute car chase in which Cruise drives a 1970 Chevelle SS. He tries his best to chase down an Audi A6 while being pursued by police. The driving stunts are of quite a remarkable quality; especially considering Cruise did all of his own driving throughout the movie.“Risky Business”: In this 1983 dark-comedy dra-ma, Tom Cruise plays Joel Goodson, a high school student living with wealthy parents in suburban Chicago. His parents go away on a trip, giving Joel

strict orders to not touch the stereo system or his father’s 1979 Porsche 928. Joel’s unruly friend convinces him otherwise, leading Joel into a down-ward spiral of trouble that includes a car chase in the Porsche, and later some major water damage.“War of the Worlds”: Cruise plays Ray Ferrier, a divorced dockworker in New York City. His pride and joy seems to be his 1966 Shelby GT350H rather

than his two kids — this all changes after an alien invasion of Earth. The probability of an alien inva-sion seems just as unlikely as a decidedly unmoti-vated N.Y. dockworker owning such a rare car as a Shelby! – But then this is the movies.Nick Gravlin writes for Hagerty Insurance. The Victoria Sym-phony started off its 75th anniversary celebration season Wednesday night with a concert and launch party.

The hour-long show featured excerpts of music that were meant to represent the upcoming season.

“We are celebrat-ing out past, present and future,” said Jill

Smilie, director of mar-keting for the Victoria Symphony. “We are so pleased to be part of this community and really celebrating with the community. It’s a real milestone for us.”

For the 75th anniver-sary 2015/2016 season, the Victoria Symphony will be performing a variety of shows with some special guests.

For the opening night in September, the Vic-toria Symphony will be performing with Naden

Band of Maritime Forces Pacific.

“We have a rich his-tory with them,” said Smilie. “When the sym-phony first started, about half the players were from the Naden Band.”

In December, famous cellist Yo-Yo Ma will be joining the Victoria Symphony for a special performance.

Victoria Cougars’ #13 Lane Van de Wetering fires the puck over a sprawling Westshore Wolves goalie #1 Chris Smith and #14 Nicholas Polomark. The Cougars defeated the Wolves in four straight games to move on to the championship final series.

Fifth time to championship series for Victoria CougarsPeter KungVictoria Cougars

The Victoria Cougars are back in the Vancouver Island Junior Hockey League championship final for the fifth straight year.

Nathan Looysen and Sam McMullen registered three points apiece as Victoria beat the Westshore Wolves 7-3 on Tuesday night.

The Cougars, who will now await the winner of the Campbell River Storm/Comox Valley Gla-cier Kings series, swept Wests-hore in four straight games.

The Wolves opened the scor-ing on a shorthanded break-away goal by Rylan Ball.

Ball snapped the puck in between the pads of Anthony Ciurro at 1:09 of the first period.

Victoria then scored three goals in a span of 78 seconds.

Brett Lervold tied the game at 6:05 with the lone assist going to Marino Somerville.  Then at 6:20, Jo Davie beat Chris Smith glove side.

Michael Fretz gave the Cou-gars a 3-1 lead after jamming the puck home from the side of the net at 7:23.

Penalties to Wade Johnson and Robert Zadra 46 seconds apart put the Wolves on an extended two-man advantage.  Westshore was able to put three shots on net but could not get any of them past Ciurro who fin-ished the game with 26 saves.

Then with 4:01 remaining, Jor-dan Martin pulled the Wolves to within striking distance before the end of the period.

It remained 3-2 for Victoria until the 14:34 mark of the sec-ond period when a deflection off the stick of Ryan Carson dou-bled the score.  Zadra gave the Cougars a 5-2 lead after his point shot sailed past Smith at 15:05.  Both goals came on the power play.

Then at 18:14, Looysen fin-ished off a three-on-one rush led by McMullen.

Johnson extended the lead 29 seconds into the third period before James Severs replied with a power play goal at 15:49.

Victoria went 2-for-4 with the man advantage; meanwhile, the Wolves finished 1-for-9.

Smith made 30 saves in a los-ing cause.

The Cougars outscored West-shore 27-6 in the series.

Playoffs start at home for Royals

The Victoria Royals will have home ice advan-tage in the first round of the Western Hockey League playoffs with games one and two of the best-of-seven series occurring at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre.

Game 1 take places March 27 and Game 2 on March 28. Puck drop for both contests is 7:05 p.m.

Single game tickets for the playoffs go on sale Monday (March 16) at 9:30 a.m. at Select Your Tick-ets Box Office located at Save-On-Foods Memorial Centre, over the phone at 250-220-7777 or online atselectyourtickets.com.

Tickets for Royals’ playoff games start at $13.    Season ticket holders and the general public can

still purchase playoff ticket packages that guar-antee the same seat for all playoff games at a discounted rate. A $75 deposit before Saturday (March 14) will guarantee fans a spot at every home game.

The Royals’ remaining playoff game dates, oppo-nents and start times are all still to be determined.

The Royals are home this weekend with a two-game set against the visting Vancouver Giants tomorrow at 7:05 p.m. and on Sunday at 1:05 p.m.

It’s a scene not often witnessed at Our Place: waiters and waitresses dressed in impeccable black and white while deliv-ering savoury meals to the tables of Greater Victoria’s homeless and impov-erished.

But on Wednesday (March 18), that is exactly what will happen when first-year students of Camosun College’s hospital-ity management training program bring a touch of fine dining to the area’s most vulnerable citizens.

“Just because you’re homeless or down on your luck doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the experience of a gourmet meal served with elegance,” said Our

Place executive director Don Evans. “The hospitality students get to prac-

tice their skills, learn more about giving back, and it’s a real treat for our family members.”

The special menu, served from 4 to 6 p.m., includes: coffee-rubbed tender-loin of pork with pear and parsnip sauce; garlic mashed potatoes; roasted carrots, sweet peppers and onions with honey-balsamic glaze. For dessert: Granny Smith apple strudel with salted caramel sauce and vanilla-scented whipped cream. Plus rich swiss rolls and whipped butter. Stu-dents will deliver table service, complete with all the amenities one expects from a

fine dining experience.“Partnering with the Our Place Society

affords our hospitality management busi-ness students the opportunity to explore innovative ways to create partnerships, build relationships, and give back to the community,” said David Armstrong, pro-gram leader for Camosun’s hospitality management.

“This is our fifth year partnering with Our Place, and it’s a relationship we greatly value. You can talk about social responsibility, but it isn’t real until you experience the very tangible results of participating in some form of community service.”

A house without a furnace or air conditioning, yet is the perfect tem-perature year-round may sound unbelievable, but in an air-tight, energy efficient passive house, it is possible.

In 2013, Rob and Mark Bernhardt, father-son developer and contractor duo, built a custom passive house for themselves and their family.

Now, they are building the first one to go on the market.

The North Park Passive House, located at 860 Queens Ave., Victo-ria, is Canada’s first multi-unit strata project built to the passive house standard. The house contains six separate units.

It is expected to cut heating costs by 90 per cent through its added insulation and design.

“A passive house essentially uses about 10 per cent of the heat of a normal house to heat it,” said Adam Fawkes, architect with Hughes Con-don Marler Architects.

Passive houses are made with the same type of insulation as normal houses, only with more than double the amount, as well as insulation under the floors.

This added insulation helps to keep the house warmer in the win-ter and cooler in the summer.

“In a typical house, you might spend about $12,000 on the furnace and all the duct work,” said Fawkes. “So you take that $12,000, and you put it towards a little bit of insula-tion. The mortgage is less than the savings on the heating bills. So in the end, instead of paying into the heating bill, you’re paying into the

mortgage.”The cost of building a passive

house is comparable to the aver-age cost of building a conventional house, said Mark.

North Park Passive House will have cost around $1 million by the time it is completed in August.

Along with more insulation, the passive house is also fitted with tri-ple-glazed windows, which helps to prevent heat loss.

While there is no furnace, all six units in the North Park Passive House will have heated tile floors in the bathrooms along with a small electric radiant panel in the kitchen.

“Together, those two will produce about 668 watts of heat on average per unit,” said Mark. “Most people have hair driers bigger than that.”

In the house, there is a heat recov-ery ventilator that mixes the heat around through the unit through air flow. The heat recovery ventilator uses about 30 watts and runs all day and night, but it only costs a few dol-lars a month to run, said Mark.

“The heating bill for each unit ends up being about $58 for the entire year.”

Besides lower heating bills, another major benefit is the comfort level.

“They are so dramatically more comfortable, it’s really even hard to describe how much more comfort-able is it than a normal building,” said Mark. “It’s like walking around in a warm hug.”

Since the building is so air tight and there is even airflow, there are no cold spots or drafts anywhere in the house.

“You can stand by a gigantic window on the coldest day of the

year and be comfortable without a sweater on.”
