Commuters travelling along Douglas Street will have to be patient over the next six months, says Victoria Mayor Lisa Helps.

Construction of phase two of the Douglas Street Priority Tran-sit and Cycling Lanes commenced

on Tuesday. A northbound transit priority lane is being constructed along Douglas Street from Hillside Avenue to Tolmie Avenue.

Construction on the $1.5-million project is expected to be com-pleted by late spring or early sum-mer.

The hope is to increase the reliability of transit during peak hours, 3 to 6 p.m., by giving buses their own lane during those times. Cyclists will also be permitted in the priority lane. The two vehicle lanes will remain, and drivers can also use the third lane outside of the posted peak hours.

“If you take transit, you want

to know that it’s [going to] be on time and on schedule,” said Meri-beth Burton, B.C. Transit spokes-person.

“People who are stuck in their cars are going to see the bus pass them, and hopefully that will inspire more people to take tran-sit.”

Until then, vehicles and buses will have to drive through the con-struction to get to where they are going.

“There will be increased conges-tion during the construction, and that’s part of change,” said Helps. “We could get nothing done again, but I thank commuters for their

patience and grace while we do this construction.”

Helps said the main benefit will be the long-term effects on transit.

“People don’t like construction, but once it’s done they love the results,” she said. “I think some-times it’s worth a bit of short-term pain.”

Tony Elson of Real Deal Bed-rooms on the corner of Doug-las and Summit Avenue, said he hopes the construction is com-pleted by spring, as predicted by B.C. Transit.

“If [the construction] is a bit of a deterrent for people to get to us this time of year I wouldn’t worry

so much as in the spring and sum-mer.” said Elson, adding that 50 per cent of his annual business comes in the summer months. Part of that reason, he said, is that Real Deal Bedrooms is so exposed on the corner of Douglas Street.

In order to add a third lane on Douglas going northbound, exist-ing lanes are being realigned and reassigned, said Katie Hamilton, spokesperson for the City of Vic-toria. Additionally, there will be a four-way traffic light put in beside Mayfair Shopping Centre at Tol-mie Avenue, where there is cur-rently a pedestrian crossing.

The Capital Regional District made it official this week – a work-ing group of the three “eastside” municipalities to scope out waste-water treatment options for Saan-ich, Oak Bay and Victoria.

The new committee will formal-ize discussions already underway between Saanich, Victoria and Oak Bay to take a leading role in identifying wastewater treatment options for their communities as part of a comprehensive regional solution.

Nils Jensen, Oak Bay Mayor and CRD chair, said it would look very much like the one created last November by Colwood, Esquimalt, Langford, View Royal, and Song-

hees First Nation. The committee is supported

by the CRD and municipal staff to develop and evaluate sub-regional treatment options for their com-munities.

“There will be meetings in the three communities. There won’t be a lot of duplication, we’ll be sharing a lot of information,” Jensen said. “It allows us to work together and reach out to residents. There will be a lot of options on the table.”

The Westside Wastewater and Resource Recovery Select Commit-tee initiated the Westside Solutions Project to engage citizens and iden-tify solutions for wastewater treat-ment and resource recovery. That includes a series of open houses and an online survey currently underway.

“It’s a matter of balancing the three issues, environmental, eco-nomic and social and what are the relative impacts,” Jensen said.

“Until we get the costing of each of the options it’s going to be diffi-cult for people to provide a mean-

ingful opinion. That’ll take some time for staff to get those figures. That takes time to work up in a way that’s understandable by resi-dents.”

The CRD is required by federal legislation to treat its sewage to a secondary or greater level by 2020, and the province has set a sewage treatment deadline of 2018. Some options that may be considered through this process by the CRD and residents is building for ter-tiary treatment – not imminently required.

Jensen couldn’t say whether the original one-site McLoughlin Point option would be among the options presented to residents for input.

“It’s not an option being consid-ered by the Westside,” he said.

Last spring the project to develop a regional wastewater treatment facility at McLoughlin Point came to a grinding halt after Esquimalt denied required rezoning and the province declined to intervene. Work was meant to begin by the

end of July 2014 on the projected $788-million plant.

In August, Oak Bay council asked staff to begin discussions with the municipality of Saanich and City of Victoria to collectively come up with a “Plan B.” In early October CRD directors approved a new framework to gauge the value of subset wastewater treatment options.

The province has committed $248 million, while the federal gov-ernment has offered $253.4 mil-lion towards the final project cost contingent on meeting specific timelines. Additional costs are the CRD’s responsibility.

The group is calling itself Westside Solutions and is co-chaired by Esquimalt Mayor Barb Desjardins and Col-wood Mayor Carol Hamilton.

The Capital Regional Dis-trict is required by federal legislation to treat its sewage to a secondary or greater level by 2020, and the prov-ince has set a sewage treat-ment deadline of 2018.

Last night the first of five public meetings was held in Colwood.

The next meeting is sched-uled on Tuesday in Langford. It’s followed the next night in Esquimalt with an open house at Municipal Hall at 5 p.m.

View Royal and Songhees also have meetings planned in their communities.

“It’s no longer possible to look backwards on waste-water treatment in the core area. We need to develop a viable plan that all the com-munities involved in this can support. It will be done in a collaborative process,” Ham-ilton said.

Westside Solutions got together after what mem-bers saw as a stalemate at the CRD, Desjardins said.

The idea was to find a solution for wastewater treatment.

“This time we need to do it right. We understand the clock is ticking. The issue is complex. We are working to create clear and concise information regarding the issue and possible solutions an make it readily available to the public,” Desjardins said.

“We need the public to be informed and most impor-tant to be involved.”

Couple plead not guilty to bomb plotTrial begins after attempt to blow up legislature

A couple accused of plotting to set off pres-sure cooker bombs at the B.C. legislature on Canada Day 2013 have pleaded not guilty in a Vancouver court.

John Nuttall and his wife Amanda Korody, who were living in a Surrey basement suite when they were arrested on conspiracy and terrorism-related charges in early July 2013, were in Vancou-ver Supreme Court on Tuesday.

The court date was scheduled as jury selection. The pair entered their pleas prior to the selection process.

Nuttall was 38 and Korody 29 when they were arrested in Abbotsford July 1, 2013 and charged with making or possessing an explosive device, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence

and knowingly facili-tating terrorist activity.

Police seized what they called three “improvised explosive devices” made from pressure cookers con-taining nails, nuts and bolts that were placed on the grounds of the legislative assembly where thousands of people were to gather for Canada Day cele-brations.

RCMP said the arrest was made following a five-month investiga-tion.

Fourteen jurors were to be chosen for the trial, which is scheduled to run for 18 weeks.

It’s likely not the ideal solution, but seven Capital Regional District municipalities – Victoria, Esquimalt, Saanich, Oak Bay, Colwood, Langford and View Royal – are on their way to making the best of a bad situation.

In a perfect world all the Greater Victoria municipalities would work together to find a solution to the sewage treatment issue. But as the days, months and years quickly countdown, the prospects of finding a perfect solution seem all but impossible.

The CRD is required by federal legislation to treat its sewage to a secondary or greater level by 2020, and the province has set a sewage treatment deadline of 2018.

Last spring the project to develop a regional wastewater treatment facility at McLoughlin Point came to a grinding halt after Esquimalt denied required rezoning. Work was meant to begin by the end of July 2014 on the projected $788-million plant.

Meetings will be held in the communities (the first was held in Colwood last night) as the committees work to identify a location for the facility and hammer down the costs. And you can be part of the solution by participating in the upcoming meetings

There will be some help on that front as the province has committed $248 million, while the federal government has offered $253.4 million towards the final project cost contingent on meeting specific timelines.

No matter what the final break down of costs works out to be, what is clear is that time is of the essence in order to prevent $500 million from being flushed down the drain.

New mayor needs to look at new ideas

Re: Victoria is far from conservative (Letters, Jan. 9)

Letter-writer has it partly right. Victoria is definitely left of liberal and conservative in its thoughts.

Even the lefties must begin to think creatively and non-partisan-like, and not push for the same old solutions to the same old problems.

I’m hoping that is what the new mayor and council will do, in part to redeem those who did not pledge allegiance to the Crown when they were sworn in.

Not hiring a mayoral executive assistant is a good start.

Money could be better spent on mental health

Recently there’s been a great deal of criticism regarding the amount of funding for mental illness.

The province spends $1.3 billion a year on mental health.

It is my experience having been a psychiatric patient in B.C. for nearly 40 years, that the money is simply not being well spent, and in many cases wasted.

In general, treatment seems to be quite ineffective.

There is much hand-holding of individuals who may simply be suffering from personal unhappiness, lack of work or ordinary personality problems. Then people with acute needs and severe illness often get neglected or fall through the cracks.

The prevalent use of pharmaceuticals for all mental illnesses seems short-sighted, with many problems regarding side effects. Drugs are also very expensive.

Combining mental and physical treatment could contribute to a more efficient and effective system. Surely, there is much that could be revised, and possible financial gains made.

Paris attacks come with a sad history

I am appalled by the recent terror crimes in Paris, and I believe in freedom of speech.

There were many aspects during and after the terrible events that Canadian and international media covered to the best of their ability. They detailed the “how” and the “who” of the tragedies as they unfolded, but very few have yet to go into any depth as to the “why.”

Allow me to just scrape the surface of dust that has just now settled, and to comment on the brothers who so callously slaughtered the cartoon journalists.

They, like about five million of the 6.5 million French Muslims, have their roots in Algeria, which was part of France until a six-year war of independence beginning in 1954 left many thousands of French and about 1.5 million Algerians dead.

War atrocities on both sides were horrendous, and so many

of Algerian ancestry living in France have never enjoyed any of the liberty, fraternity and equality that has long been the motto of the French Republic, and resentment festers in their ghettos.

This brief peek at French history is never an attempt to excuse the terrorists last week; rather an attempt to illuminate how President de Gaulle’s actions back then, have come to haunt today’s politicians.

Likewise, the thug who killed hostages in the Paris kosher supermarket cited his radicalization as stemming from results of the 2003 Iraq attack. Did President George Bush ever think of consequences of these actions?

It may have been hearteningto see world’s leaders join hands in solidarity and support for the French population last Sunday, but the mere sight of the Israeli prime minister will cause anger in several communities.

The coast of British Columbia has been a maritime highway for millennia.

First Nations have always used B.C. waterways as the most efficient way of traversing the challenging landscape of mountains and fjords that give our province its distinctive beauty.

The Tlingit people of the Alaska panhandle were particularly famous for their far-ranging dugout canoes, which would regularly make the 1,400-kilometre journey to Puget Sound for the sake of trade.

With the coming of European settlers in the 19th century, this coastal highway remained the primary mode of travel, but the boats found in its waters gradually changed.

Steamships, often paddle-wheeled but with two masts to provide the option of sail instead of steam, busily chugged along the straits of Vancouver Island carrying men, equipment and goods. The most famous, and certainly most iconic of these early vessels,

was the SS Beaver.When I was growing

up in Victoria the modern, replica Beaver, which sank in Cowichan Bay last year after sitting derelict for some time, could often been seen in the Inner Harbour – an intriguing floating anachronism.

We have a wonderful model of the Beaver in the Maritime Museum of B.C. collection, along with a few objects made from her salvaged material, and visitors often ask me how the original came to be at an outpost as remote as Victoria was in the 1840s.

In 1835, the SS Beaver was built for the Hudson’s Bay Company by Blackwall Yard, a well-known shipbuilder on the London banks of the Thames. Blackwall

Yard had only built their first steamship in 1821, but when it closed its doors in 1987 it had been repairing and building ships for more than 350 years.

The Beaver was a brigantine, equipped with two masts for

sail as well as steam-propelled paddle wheels. She was even designed to use saltwater in her boilers, though this worked a lot better in theory than in practice, as the salinity corroded the boiler walls. She required a new boiler about every seven years over the course of her lifetime.

Measuring 31 metres in length and 10 metres at her widest point over her paddle boxes, the Beaver was of a middling

size and designed to be versatile enough to travel open and sheltered waters, while transporting all manner of cargo and passengers.

She was sailed, not steamed, on a six-month voyage across the Atlantic and around the Horn before she finally arrived at Fort Vancouver in 1836. There her engines and boilers were finally connected, and her paddles were shipped.

Now Vancouver, Washington, at the mouth of the Columbia River, Fort Vancouver was the main Hudson’s Bay trading post in the Pacific Northwest.

She was based there, along with James Douglas and his men, until it became clear that the area would fall into American hands when the Oregon Treaty was finalized (as it was in 1846) and the 49th parallel was established as the border.

So, in 1843, Fort Victoria was established instead

as the main Hudson’s Bay post on the west coast, and the Beaver did her duty as a fur trading vessel as far north as Alaska, and as far south as California, but always returned to Victoria as her home port.

During this period she was captained by William McNeill, who owned a large piece of land in what is now Oak Bay. McNeill Avenue is named after him and his home stood near Victoria Avenue and Beach Drive.

He was known to sound the steam horn as he passed by Gonzales and McNeill Bays. Thus prompted, his son would rig up the horse and buggy to go meet him in Victoria’s harbour and provide a lift home.

The Beaver was a familiar presence in coastal communities

far and wide, but when the Fraser River Gold Rush arrived in 1858, she was repurposed as a passenger vessel, ferrying miners to the mainland, then known as New Caledonia.

She spent the 1860s and early 1870s as a surveying ship and was finally sold in 1874 to the B.C. Towing and Transportation Co., and worked as a towboat until she came to a rather inglorious end in 1888.

Rumor has it that her crew was drunk the day they ran the Beaver aground at Prospect Point, in what is now Stanley Park. This historic vessel sat rotting on the rocks for four years, a novelty for visitors to Stanley Park, and a sitting duck for salvagers who came and stripped her of her vital pieces as souvenirs.

In 1892 she finally

sank beneath the waves. Further salvaging of the wreck was done in the 1960s, including raising a boiler and parts of her paddle wheels. Some of these are on display in the Vancouver Maritime Museum today, and other were made into novelty objects, like the cigarette boxes and canes that we have at MMBC.

The wreck has dramatically disintegrated since then, but her rotting skeleton still lies in Burrard Inlet, the submerged ghost of the most iconic ship in B.C. history.

Miles Craig considers it a calling.

The James Bay resident says drugs and alcohol are among the largest social and economic problems in Can-ada.

Two-and-a-half years ago Craig, 52, founded Canada’s Temperance Foundation.

“It kinda just came to me that this was what I was going to do,” Craig said. “I wrote the [foundation’s] mission statement before doing a lot of research, and the research backed up the mission state-ment.”

The mission of the foun-dation is to educate Canadi-ans on the benefits of tem-perance, defined as habitual moderation or restraint in the use of alcohol and drugs.

This month the foundation launched the Be You Prom-ise to educate and generate awareness on the benefits of life without abusing drugs or alcohol.

The promise asks online viewers to sign a pledge to drink in moderation and not use drugs. It can be found online at BUpromise.org.

Craig quit drinking eight years ago and since then has devoted his life to sobriety.

“I abused alcohol,” Craig said matter-of-factly.

“There were many times when I became intoxicated. That was accepting to be accepted, but it did have an impact on my life.”

Craig now hopes the foun-dation’s message can get out to thousands of Cana-dians with the foundation’s revamped website and Be You

Promise pledge.Over the past two years, the

foundation has lobbied gov-ernment and spoke to com-munity groups and schools about temperance.

“There are a lot of miscon-ceptions about alcohol and drugs,” Craig said.

“One of the misconceptions is that we need alcohol and drugs to relax and to have fun. We’re saying that’s not neces-sarily true.”

Theatre Skam has been entertaining Victoria audiences with its creative performances for 20 years now.

Kicking off the new year, Skam is hosting its annual Birthday Bash party on Saturday, Jan. 17 at 7 p.m. at the Atrium, 800 Yates St. There will be live music, appetizers, door prizes, a silent auction, a live auction and a cash bar. Tickets are $20 each with one entry into the door prize raffle, or $100 each for 20 entries into the raffle.

Over the year, Skam will be looking back on some of its best shows and giving them new life through different interpretations in the new series, Skam Remixed.

“The theory is that we’re doing four older Skam shows and giving them over to different compa-

nies to reinterpret and remix them,” said Max Johnson, associate artistic producer of Skam.

Skam Remixed starts on Jan. 31 and Feb. 1 by adapting Aerwacol, produced by Skam on railway platforms and under bridges in 2000, into Skam Remixed: Ballet Victoria’s Aerwacol, part of Dance Victoria’s Dance Days.

“It’s going to be recognizable as a new piece of theatre inspired by old Skam work, but it’s also going to be very different,” said Johnson.

Other remixed performances will take place from April 30 to May 9 and Aug. 26 to Sept. 5. Tickets are available at the Royal and McPherson theatres society box office.

Chevy Traverse is a doggy delight

It’s a challenge to find the right vehicle to take two dogs on an annual holiday trip to Tacoma to visit family, friends and doggy cousins. Rental vehicles are out of sight price- wise and some compa-nies are a little sniffy about the ‘passengers’ (at least I think it was the dogs they objected to). Therefore, the offer of an extended test drive of the 2015 Chevrolet Traverse was a welcome opportunity. From a human’s per-spective, the Traverse was pleasurable to drive, extremely comfortable, the cabin roomy and very classy, a nice quiet ride, the dashboard controls very user friendly and easy to interpret with everything close to hand. The seats (seven in all for bipeds) are gorgeously adjustable with heated lumbar support up front, which is a soothing relief for those of us with back problems. From the outside, the car seems like a big beast best for the backcountry but it is surprisingly wonderful to drive in the city, more like a luxury sedan than a lumbering SUV. It was easy to manoeuvre on narrow streets, a dream to nip in and out of parking lots and spots.And even the vertically challenged

– ahem – found it easy to load up with lots of luggage, bags, boxes, blankets, pillows and doggy beds – all the necessary accoutrements of car travel, plus the added advantage of still having room to bring home a souvenir or three. On the highway, as in the city,

the Traverse offered great visibility and we felt snug, safe and secure – sorry about the alliteration, but it’s true.Our doggy travelling companions are at each end of the age spectrum. Sullivan the Jack Russell Terrier is little, young and bouncy, while Desi the Shepherd Cross is a large dog of

noble lineage and a senior citizen. In short, she enjoys her comfort. The cargo area of the Traverse offered both dogs plenty of space for each to do their own thing: stretch out, curl up, look out the window, and chew quietly on toys, while contemplating the phenomenon of black holes or, in the case of Miss Desi, perhaps where the next carrot was coming from. Given the layout of the interior, with the walk through back seats, a barrier was needed to discour-age the cargo passengers from walking through into the first-class front cabin.It should be noted there are ten cup holders for those in need of regular caffeinating. We did receive barked complaints from the back that not one

was big enough for a bowl of water. Please note, Mr Chevy.Having the navigation system was great as getting to our destination was a little tricky, and finding our way in the dark could have been a minor trial. Our friendly ‘nav-lady’ delivered us easily. I especially liked getting plenty of warning about upcoming turns. Some navigation systems instruct you to turn at the very last moment, which is not helpful. Often our ‘nav-lady’ gave us two warnings sometimes even three ‘turn left in 250 metres’, ‘turn left in 100 metres’. Believe me it was comforting. All the places we wanted to visit parks, malls, trails and shops were easily found with no hassles.In Tacoma, a third dog joined us for ad-ventures around town – Beau, a large

yellow lab. Everyone knows labs are eternal puppies who enjoy good times no matter where they land. This happy boy landed in the cargo area with the other two and still there was plenty of room for all three dogs with nary a complaint about someone’s paw being on someone’s side. It all made for a fun Christmas cele-bration with lots of treats, even for my backup navigator Patricia and myself. Next year, the ‘kids’ are holding out for a Cadillac!

anymore. Then there’s what really gets the party started. Under its hood is a 3.0L, turbocharged T6 engine that produces the aforementioned 345 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Torque is harnessed as low as 2,800 rpm and then delivered via a 6-speed automatic transmission. Paddle shifters also come as standard equipment. If there were to be more of a kick while accelerating quickly, that would be welcome, but not necessary. Speaking of acceleration, getting up to 100km/h from zero takes a mere 4.9 seconds. Getting you back to zero is made possible by using Polestar’s 14.6-inch ventilated front discs matched with six-piston Brembo calipers with 11.8-inch ventilated discs in the rear. The only real drawback of the Polestar, I found, was its turning radius. Tight turns at low speeds wasn’t ideal, but if you need to a three or four-point turn to get into the mall’s cramped parking stalls, so be it.At the end of our test time together, I’m happy to report that I checked off all the items on the list. This lift has enough clearance to clear 37-inch tires, and will cost you $2,400 with shocks. With lift kits of this size, you should definitely make sure you make any neces-sary improvements such as a spacer kit to lower the carrier bearing on vehicles with two piece drive-shafts.This will reduce high-speed driveshaft vibrations, and is well worth the investment of $60.You should also consider a steering stabilizer to control those large tires bouncing

down the road. There are a few options available from a single application or a double stabilizer setup, depending on the vehicle. Price $89 to $165.Another good upgrade to consider with a lift of this size is a traction bar system to prevent wheel hop or axle wind up. In the old days, these bars would limit your wheel travel, but now the ends are equipped with reverse hourglass-shaped urethane bushings that allow the traction bar to flex for articulation.The final upgrade to consider is the addition of stainless steel brake lines. The lectures take place over the course of four Sunday afternoons: Feb. 1 and 8, March 1 and 8.

ent theme each Sunday, together the lectures form a short history of early modern art start-ing in 1875 and ending in 1914 with the advent of the First World War.

The first lecture, Impressionism-The Quiet Revolution, will look at how Impres-sionist artists became known as much for their personal histo-ries as for their art. It was a period of promi-nent personalities that bridged the last decade of the 19th century to the first decade of the 20th, shaping the trends that modern art was to follow.

Post-Impressionism-Different Eyes, the sec-

ond lecture, examines the early years of the 20th century wherein artists such as Gauguin, Van Gogh and Tou-louse-Lautrec sought to depict personal themes symbolically using colour and emotive forms.

The third lec-ture, Heroic Visions-Makers of Modernism, looks at how without a unifying characteris-tic, a variety of artists explored innovative means to achieve per-sonal and expressive ends.

Modernism-Frag-menting Reality, the final lecture takes us back to the decade prior to the First World War – a short but intense period dur-ing which artists made their way to Paris and questioned the very definition of art as a means of picturing real-ity. There were a num-

ber of main figures with none more prominent than Pablo Picasso.

Violas play for a special friendVictoria Hospice presents the violas of the

Victoria Symphony in a special fundraising concert and silent auction.

Eight Victoria symphony violists – Kenji Fuse, Mieka Michaud, Kay Cochrane, Stacey Boal, Jenny MacLeod, Donna Robertson, Chris Prince and Michael Van der Sloot, assisted by pianist Wendy Stofer – will play together in memory of Ingrid Buschmann, who was a long-time member of the viola section.

Buschmann died at Victoria Hospice in October 2013. Funds raised go to the Victoria Hospice’s Patient Comfort Fund.

The violists will perform the Gordon Jacob Suite for 8 Violas, York Bowen’s Fantasia for Four Violas, and a viola sonata dedicated to the memory of Buschmann.

The concert is Jan. 30 at James Bay United Church, beginning at 7 p.m.

Inspired by her holistic ranching back-ground, Lt.-Gov. Judith Guichon has launched a province-wide envi-ronmental education program for high school teachers and youth leaders.

Stewards of the Future offers grants of up to $800 per group to cover field trips, fees for programs and guest speakers, equipment and teacher release time for proj-ects.

It is offered for students from grades 9-12, First Nations edu-cators, 4-H, Guide and Scout groups and envi-ronment clubs, with an application deadline of Jan. 23 for the spring program.

“Through Stewards of the Future, students will have the opportu-nity to explore issues that affect the land, water and other natu-ral resources in British Columbia,” Guichon said.

“The goal of this pro-gram is not to solve the challenges we face, but rather to encour-age open discussion and gain a better under-standing of the issues that affect our natural surroundings.”

Program partners, including the Education Ministry and B.C. Parks, offer support for proj-

ects such as research on invasive species leading to mapping and removal.

The Stewards of the Future toolkit empha-sizes hands-on “place-based” experience to appreciate and enhance biodiversity.

Guichon and her late husband Lawrence Guichon are credited

with pioneer-ing holistic management in the B.C. cat-tle industry, emphasiz ing preservation of natural grass-land on their historic Merritt-area ranch.

Holistic man-agement, developed by African biologist and game ranger Allan Savory, overturned the long-held belief that overgrazing is the result of too many animals. Savory proved that reducing the number of animals doesn’t restore grasslands, which devel-oped in the presence of large herds that were kept closely bunched and moving to avoid predators. Planned graz-ing mimics that pattern and gives grasslands time to recover.

There’s a growing – and dan-gerous – health trend that is hurting our society at a very core level, according to Dr. Richard Stanwick, chief medi-cal officer for Island Health.

It’s not actually a “trend.” Not in the way we normally think of them, anyway. It’s not a spe-cific food that’s hot right now (like 2014’s kale obsession) or an exercise plan that’s catch-ing hold (like yoga), but it’s a combination of factors that are leading to a systemic and soci-etal obesity problem.

Stanwick says obesity is as big a health issue globally these days as starvation.

When he was in medical school, they “didn’t even need to know about Type-2 diabe-tes,” he says. “We’d just never be tested on it, because we’d never see it. Now we’re seeing it diagnosed in kids, and they’re having operations in their 20s and sometimes we’re attending their funerals in their 30s.”

One main issue is we haven’t acknowledged how bad being overweight is for us. And how we get that way – with a seden-tary, screen-obsessed lifestyle – is often just as dangerous.

“Some of the more discon-

certing evidence shows that their parents don’t see their child as having a weight issue,” Stanwick says, “so we really have to enlist parents and make them see this is an serious situ-ation. They don’t see it as being on par with other illnesses. It’s becoming acceptable.”

One of the best ways to address the issue within the family unit, he says, is to start incorporating and addressing healthier lifestyles – including both physical activity and diet – into our daily routines.

“It doesn’t need to be a Leave-it-to-Beaver-type sce-nario or a scene from some old 50s television show, but com-ing together as a family to pre-pare meals and have activities that engage us interactively is important.”

Making meals together as a family not only encourages healthier eating, as most foods prepared fresh at home are going to be far better for us physically. It can make us think about what we’re putting in our bodies and encourage health-ier decision making, especially if we discuss with our kids where the food we’re prepar-ing comes from.

“So many pre-prepared foods have sugar listed right at the top of their ingredients,” Stan-

wick says. “And we have no idea what goes into it, most of the time. The type of calorie-dense food that comes from the driver-thru window – we’re just not genetically equipped for that.”

The other obvious impact on obesity and weight issues is adding exercise to one’s day-to-day activities. This is especially important for children, accord-ing to Stanwick, because physi-cal exercise is directly tied to intellectual development.

The interactivity of chil-dren’s play these days has been pushed aside in favour of screens and other sedentary activities, he says. He recom-mends families get outside and enjoy being together in a posi-tive, activity-driven way.

But it doesn’t need to be a sudden, monumental shift in order to make a positive differ-ence, Stanwick says.

“Make it one meal a week, to start, that you make together with fresh ingredients. Go for one walk a week as a family. I’m sure you’ll see a difference, not only in a physical way, but it will impact your mood and improve many other aspects of your life, as well.”

According to this health expert, stemming the tide of obesity starts at home.

Q How do you find time for “you” outside of being a “mom”?

A It is not always easy, how-ever my husband and I really believe that when we make time for a run, or walk, or just get-ting together with friends that we are better parents, better partners and can function with the demands of life. My kids also know that when mom needs a run that she will come back a happier mommy which makes them happy!

Q What are you reading right now? How about with your kids?

A I love reading, especially before bed. Recently I’ve been picking books that just don’t make me think. I just finished reading Nora Roberts’ Heart of the Sea. Right now we are reading Harry Potter with the kids every night before they go to bed. We are currently on book No. 3 and we are all enjoying the excite-ment, adventure and suspense.

Q What is your favourite family

activity to share together?

A Every Friday night at our house is Nacho Friday. We sit down with nachos (and veggies), watch a movie and connect after a full week of activities, work and school. We check in about what was your favorite part of the week and the answer is always the same “Nacho Friday.” If for some reason we miss it, we have to make it up another night. It is our time to connect and be together.

Q The part of your day you look forward to the most?

A After we finish reading books at night, I love tucking the kids into bed. It is here that I get lots of snuggles, hugs, kisses and I love you’s. It is also a time when I get little extra nuggets of what happened in their day (they think it is a delay tactic, and I treasure the extra informa-tion). I also love this time, as I know a cup of tea is waiting for me and a little TV time awaits.

When Lorie and Walter bought their home in Port Alberni 13 years ago they slowly began renovating the unfinished basement to accommodate Walter’s changing needs as his muscular dystrophy advanced.

“The basement was a black hole when we moved in,” recalled Walter. “After 12 years of skimping and saving, we made the downstairs completely wheelchair accessible, except for the bathroom. It was way too small. I could only stand for about a minute and a half without collapsing in the shower stall and I could no longer pull myself out of the tub in the upstairs’ bathroom, even with Lorie’s help.”

Through funding from BC Housing’s Home Adaptations for Independence (HAFI) program, Walter and Lorie were able to work with a contractor to transform the space. A wall was removed to make room for a wheel-in shower with benches, grab bars were installed, and the vanity and fixtures were relocated.

I just slide into the shower now,” said Walter. “I feel safer and no longer dread trying to wash myself. What was previously a dangerous chore for me is now a welcome treat.”

Walter and Lorie hope to spend the rest of their lives in their home.

The HAFI program provides financial assistance to help eligible low-income seniors and people with disabilities adapt their homes so they can continue to live independently.

His and hers driving souvenirsPeriodically, I have the oppor-

tunity to sit in the passenger seat of the car while my 23-year-old daughter takes the wheel. This can be an adrenalin-pump-ing roller-coaster of a ride, wherein I covertly grip the door handle and remind myself to breathe.

Danica isn’t a bad driver. She’s “des-tination-oriented.” And now that I think about it, I believe the neighbours in the area where I grew up referred to me as “Little Hell on Wheels,” so per-haps she comes by it honestly.

Aggressive driving is cer-tainly not something she inher-ited from her father. My grand-mother drove faster than my ex-husband. At times, he would drive so slowly, I’d have to reach over with my own foot to press his foot down on the gas pedal.

Back in those days, people in B.C. who drove a little over the speed limit often received a souvenir in the mail. When my photo radar ticket arrived, my ex gleefully posted it on the bulletin board for all to admire. He’d often remind us that he’d never received a speeding ticket in his entire life. So I was quite thrilled, I confess, the summer

we were driving from Powell River to Lund, when a police offi-cer pulled us over.

“Were you speed-ing?” I asked inno-cently.

“Of course not,” he said a bit peevishly as we waited for Mr. Policeman to arrive at the window. Turns out, Mr. Virgin Speed-ing Ticket was driving 60 km in a 30 km zone!

While I gleefully pic-tured a copy of his speeding ticket posted

alongside my photo radar ticket, Derrick attempted to sweet talk his way out of it. This involved hopping out of the van, check-ing the cop’s radar for accuracy, telling the officer he was “vir-gin,” and chatting with him for about 15 minutes. At one point, a car full of youths drove by and someone called out, “Give the cop a donut!”

I eyed the Tim Horton’s bag on the dash and quickly stowed it under my seat – nothing would get him out of this one. The girls sat quietly in the van, apparently cowed by Daddy’s slip into the underworld of traffic crime.

The mighty finally acknowl-edged he had fallen and we continued our journey in surly silence, turning around after a

brief stop in Lund and heading back. As we passed the scene of the crime, we couldn’t see the 30 km speed sign anywhere on the opposite side of the road. With a righteous whoop from the driv-ers’ seat, Derrick swung the van around and re-traced his route of woe. There it was … the 30 km sign was lying flat on the ground! The avenged driver (a.k.a. a pho-tographer) leapt onto the road and immediately took 21 pho-tographs entitled Sign Lying On Ground. As he tried the shot from different angles, a High-ways fellow drove up and began to re-erect the sign. So Derrick photographed him too.

“The police will probably think you kicked it down,” I mumbled as we drove to the RCMP detachment, where Der-rick presented his case. A few hours later, an officer attended our campsite and drew the word “void” through the ticket. Once back home, I was forced to view his-and-hers souvenirs: my photo radar ticket grump-ily sitting next to his ticket with a great big, self-satisfied “void” written through it.

My daughter’s driving record remains untarnished … but I can’t say the same for the hearts of anyone driving with her.

The arrival of a new year is the perfect time to give your mortgage a checkup. That’s the advice of Paul Macara, a mortgage broker with Beyer Mortgage Services.

“I always encourage my clients to look at their mortgage on an annual basis,” said Macara.

He said that allows you to take advantage of your prepayment privileges to maximize your mortgage principal reduction and high-interest debt can be transferred to a lower interest rate to boost cash flow and save on interest costs.

It’s also an opportunity to take advantage of attractive mortgage products and rates, which are floating around historic lows, and could provide access to the lowest-cost funds for renovations, education funding, a vacation or other large looming expense.

Some of Macara’s other mortgage tips for 2015 include speeding up your mortgage paydown.

He suggests finding a way to use prepayment privileges this year at least once. Using a tax refund or just a little extra cash that you’ve managed to sock away towards your mortgage will increase your return on future payments.

And instead of paying your mortgage monthly, he recommends paying weekly or bi-weekly. That small change can save you thousands.

“Many of our trusted lenders offer fantastic prepayment privileges,” said Macara. “Many products allow you to prepay up to 15-20 per cent of your original mortgage balance every year on any of your regular payment dates. This payment is applied directly towards your principal and helps you become mortgage-free

sooner.”He said it’s important to always

renew with your eyes open, calling it an opportunity to negotiate the best possible deal.

“I recently had a client come in with a renewal letter from one of the five big banks. The rate they were offering my client was one per cent higher than my best rate,” said Macara. “Make sure you do a little research before you tick that renewal box. I always advise my

clients come see me five months before their renewal date to ensure we get a rate hold in place.”

He said those who purchased their first home last year could be leaving money on the table. First-time buyers could be able to take advantage of the $5,000 non-refundable Home Buyer Tax Credit amount, which provides up to $750 in federal tax relief.

No matter what the year ahead will bring for you and your home,

Macara advises to make sure your credit is in good shape. He said paying your bills on time and making sure your credit accounts don’t exceed 30 per cent of the credit available will help you qualify for the best mortgage rate possible. He suggests building a financial cushion by putting a small amount from every paycheque into a fund to cover any potential emergencies.

Chevy Traverse is a doggy delight

It’s a challenge to find the right vehicle to take two dogs on an annual holiday trip to Tacoma to visit family, friends and doggy cousins. Rental vehicles are out of sight price- wise and some compa-nies are a little sniffy about the ‘passengers’ (at least I think it was the dogs they objected to). Therefore, the offer of an extended test drive of the 2015 Chevrolet Traverse was a welcome opportunity. From a human’s per-spective, the Traverse was pleasurable to drive, extremely comfortable, the cabin roomy and very classy, a nice quiet ride, the dashboard controls very user friendly and easy to interpret with everything close to hand. The seats (seven in all for bipeds) are gorgeously adjustable with heated lumbar support up front, which is a soothing relief for those of us with back problems. From the outside, the car seems like a big beast best for the backcountry but it is surprisingly wonderful to drive in the city, more like a luxury sedan than a lumbering SUV. It was easy to manoeuvre on narrow streets, a dream to nip in and out of parking lots and spots.And even the vertically challenged

– ahem – found it easy to load up with lots of luggage, bags, boxes, blankets, pillows and doggy beds – all the necessary accoutrements of car travel, plus the added advantage of still having room to bring home a souvenir or three. On the highway, as in the city,

the Traverse offered great visibility and we felt snug, safe and secure – sorry about the alliteration, but it’s true.Our doggy travelling companions are at each end of the age spectrum. Sullivan the Jack Russell Terrier is little, young and bouncy, while Desi the Shepherd Cross is a large dog of

noble lineage and a senior citizen. In short, she enjoys her comfort. The cargo area of the Traverse offered both dogs plenty of space for each to do their own thing: stretch out, curl up, look out the window, and chew quietly on toys, while contemplating the phenomenon of black holes or, in the case of Miss Desi, perhaps where the next carrot was coming from. Given the layout of the interior, with the walk through back seats, a barrier was needed to discour-age the cargo passengers from walking through into the first-class front cabin.It should be noted there are ten cup holders for those in need of regular caffeinating. We did receive barked complaints from the back that not one

was big enough for a bowl of water. Please note, Mr Chevy.Having the navigation system was great as getting to our destination was a little tricky, and finding our way in the dark could have been a minor trial. Our friendly ‘nav-lady’ delivered us easily. I especially liked getting plenty of warning about upcoming turns. Some navigation systems instruct you to turn at the very last moment, which is not helpful. Often our ‘nav-lady’ gave us two warnings sometimes even three ‘turn left in 250 metres’, ‘turn left in 100 metres’. Believe me it was comforting. All the places we wanted to visit parks, malls, trails and shops were easily found with no hassles.In Tacoma, a third dog joined us for ad-ventures around town – Beau, a large

yellow lab. Everyone knows labs are eternal puppies who enjoy good times no matter where they land. This happy boy landed in the cargo area with the other two and still there was plenty of room for all three dogs with nary a complaint about someone’s paw being on someone’s side. It all made for a fun Christmas cele-bration with lots of treats, even for my backup navigator Patricia and myself. Next year, the ‘kids’ are holding out for a Cadillac!

There are a few schools of thought when it comes to writing down your to-do lists.One argument says that writing lists causes the brain to get lazy; therefore, it doesn’t retain infor-mation as easily because it knows there is a backup somewhere.Another suggests that highly effective people write lists because when they scratch their tasks off, it creates positive reinforcement and motivates indi-viduals to continue to work hard. Call my brain lazy but I love writing lists. It seemed only natural to have such a list while the Volvo’s performance version of V60 sportwagon was in my garage. anymore. Then there’s what really gets the party started. Under its hood is a 3.0L, turbocharged T6 engine that produces the aforementioned 345 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque. Torque is harnessed as low as 2,800 rpm and then delivered via a 6-speed automatic transmission. Paddle shifters also come as standard equipment. If there were to be more of a kick while accelerating quickly, that would be welcome, but not necessary. Speaking of acceleration, getting up to 100km/h from zero takes a mere 4.9 seconds. Getting you back to zero is made possible by using Polestar’s 14.6-inch ventilated front discs matched with six-piston Brembo calipers with 11.8-inch ventilated discs in the rear. The only real drawback of the Polestar, I found, was its turning radius. Tight turns at low speeds wasn’t ideal, but if you need to a three or four-point turn to get into the mall’s cramped parking stalls, so be it.At the end of our test time together, I’m happy to report that I checked off all the items on the list. In fact, the most popular vehicle in the world for more than three decades has been the Ford F-150, which, according to Morgan Stanley, accounts for 90 percent of Ford Motor Com-pany’s global profits.Given that kind of profit margin, and considering that in a typical year 16 million new vehicles are sold, there’s a huge incentive for auto manufacturers to try to introduce unique trucks in an effort to ex-pand their existing model lines and fatten corporate treasuries.For the most part, these efforts succeed. Neither a Cadillac Escalade nor a BMW X5 seem as strange as they did a decade ago. But here are other efforts that seemed like a sure bet but somehow missed the mark.1982 Dodge RampageThe product plan: Like Subaru, Dodge eyed the fat profits made by Chevy and Ford with their car-based pickup trucks and designed the Rampage to fill the void. Steel is out and aluminum is the new lightweight “in” material for auto body panels.Hang on a minute, maybe it’s Carbon Fibre-Rein-forced Plastic? These two materials, plus a very different type of hybrid, are entries for the 2015 AJAC Best New Innovative Auto Technology Award.Ford - F150 Aluminum Body: “If I had asked people what they wanted, they would have said faster horses,” is a quote attribut-

ed to Henry Ford, founder of the Ford Motor Company. The Ford F150 has been the best selling in truck sold in Canada for the last four years. Customers may not have asked for an alumi-num body, instead of steel, but there’s solid reasoning behind this change.Aluminum reduces body weight by 40 to 50 per cent. It’s more resistant to corrosion issues and it’s 100 per cent recyclable. In addition to fuel efficiency benefits, a lighter vehicle also has positive influences on braking, handling, ride

and acceleration. A special heat treatment, developed by Ford, nearly doubles (compared to steel) the strength of the military grade aluminum (magne-sium) alloy body panels used in the new F150, making them more resistant to dents. Much of the raw aluminum also comes from Canada, as does a good portion of the secondary processing.Ford’s experience with aluminum body parts actually goes all the way back to the 1915 Model T. In 2009 it secretly built an

aluminum body F150, for test purposes, and Ford engineers have also been able to draw from experi-ence in developing current production vehicles such as the all-aluminum body Jaguar XJ. BMW Carbon Fibre-Re-inforced Plastic: The BMW i3 and i8 are two new all-electric vehicles with ultra-light-weight bodies made from Carbon Fibre-Reinforced Plastic (CFRP). It’s a man-made material that’s extremely strong and it’s about 30 per cent lighter than

aluminum. This is the first time that the entire body of a production car has been made with a carbon fiber compound. CFRP is a composite material consisting of

carbon fiber surrounded by a plastic matrix (resin). It’s completely resistant to corrosion and is expected to have a substantially lon-ger useful life than metal. It also remains stable under all climatic conditions, according to BMW, even when it’s exposed to large temperature fluctuations. Carbon Fiber is not a new material to auto racing enthusiasts, where its exceptional strength and light weight make if an ideal body material. CFRP has also been used to make trunk lids, roofs and even drive-shafts in the sporty M Series models by BMW. The main drawback to using carbon fiber in mainstream production vehicles, however, has been its cost, which brings up a Pacific Northwest connection,All of the carbon fiber use in i3 and i8 comes from a new production plant in Moses Lake, Washington State. In fact, BMW has plans to triple capacity in Moses Lake and make it the world’s largest carbon fiber production plant. More and more BMW models are expected to include com-

ponents made with CFRP and large-scale production is expected to reduce unit costs,Honda/Acura - Sport Hybrid SH-AWD: The hybrid edition of the new Acura RLX includes the first-ever elec-tronic (torque vectoring) Super Handling All-Wheel Drive (SH-AWD) system used in a production hybrid vehicle. This RLX is also the most powerful Acura production model ever built. Combined peak output is 377 horsepower and peak torque to the front wheels is 273 lb-ft at 4,700 rpm. Yet, its fuel consumption is incredibly low, at just 8.0/ 7.5/ 7.7 L/100km (city/high-way/combined).The hybrid powertrain includes three electric motors, one up front and two in the rear, and they all provide both power assist and regenerative charge to a battery pack. The gas engine is a 3.5-litre, 310-horsepower V6 with Variable Cylinder Manage-ment that’s linked with the 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Acura’s super-handling all-wheel-drive uses “torque vectoring” to create a yaw moment that helps the RLX turn effortlessly. It functions like an enhanced differen-tial that sends more power to the outside rear wheel during cornering. And, like magic, you’re a much better and smoother driver. The RLX’s sophisticated hybrid system can also allows it run strictly on battery power with the rear motors driving the vehicle.
