Vice-President’s MessageMuch activity to reportElizabeth A. Ayello, PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, CWON, ETN, MAPWCA, FAAN WCET™ Vice President, 2016-2018

The WCET™ Executive Board (EB) is a group of dedicated professionals who donate many hours to ensure that the WCET™ achieves the goals in the strategic plan. I am honored that you elected me to be part of the Executive Board and to once again serve you as your WCET™ Vice President (VP) .

In this issue of the BullETin, along with many of the stories of activities of our members, you will find reports from WCET™ Committee and Advisory Panel Chairpersons. So, I thought it would be a good opportunity for me to provide you with a Vice President’s Report for 2017 so you can be updated with what I have been doing for the last year.

You might ask, what do I do as VP? Of course you all know that I am an assistant editor for the WCET™ BullETin. In that capacity I write a VP message

for each WCET™ BullETin, assist the editor Laurent Chabal with issue ideas and also help proof the issue.

Serving as your vice president is an exciting but very full position. One of my many functions is to assist the WCET™ President with the logistical operations that are necessary to keep the WCET™ running smoothly. This includes assisting with developing agendas for EB conference calls, answering numerous emails, and participating on a variety of conference calls including the monthly EB meeting calls. It is not easy to develop a time of day for all EB members to participate on the calls. My assigned time is 5 AM on Saturday morning (the same time zone as our President and management company, Hauck & Associates). Depending on their country, the dedicated EB members are calling in on Saturday at 1600 hours, 1200 hours, 1100 hours, 1000 hours. One member calls in at midnight Friday night. So you can see that it is quite a span of time zones for us to accommodate to participate in the EB conference calls.

My specific responsibilities as VP also include overseeing the membership and international delegates (IDs). Jen Bank from our management company assists me in obtaining our most current membership and international delegate data from our electronic data base. I then interpret this data on my monthly VP report for the EB. I work with Laurent Chabal, Chairperson of the Publications and Communications Committee to keep the International Delegate list up-to-date on the WCET™ website. I also send any changes to Karen Zulkowski, Executive Editor of the WCET™ Journal so that this information is also current in the journal. As Vice President, I enjoy very much emailing with you our WCET™ members and IDs. I hope the IDs are finding the ID manual, that was given to them at the ID meeting in Cape Town and is available on the WCET™ website, is helpful. BullETin April 2017 2

The VP is responsible for the WCET™ membership survey. As you might recall, I gave a verbal report regarding the 2015 membership survey at the General meeting in Cape Town. You will find an article that I wrote along with Jen Bank that summarizes the findings of the 2015 membership survey in the 2017 issue 1 of the WCET™ Journal. As WCET™ conducts a membership survey in the odd year, I sent emails that were in several languages to all members inviting them to provide suggestions for any changes to the 2017 survey questions. Thank you to all who responded with your great ideas. A revised 2017 survey questionnaire that incorporated all member suggestions received was reviewed and approved by the EB at its 4 March 2017 conference call meeting. Please look for the email invitation that will be sent to all members requesting their participation in the 2017 membership survey. It is hoped that once again our members will provide translation of my email into several languages. If you are willing to volunteer to do translation, please contact Jen Bank at [email protected]. Thank you again to all those who have given of their time to provide translations, it is most appreciated. The 2017 survey will open in mid-May and remain available until the beginning of October 2017. We hope as many of you as possible will participate in this important survey. I will give a preliminary report at the business meeting at the 22nd Biennial Congress in Kuala Lumpur in April 2018. A more detailed summary will be published later in the WCET™ Journal

Another role of the VP is to serve as EB liaison to the WCET™ Constitution Advisory Panel. This work is accomplished by email and phone. Please read the report by Karen Bruton, WCET™ Constitution Advisory Panel Chairperson which can be found later is this issue of the BullETin.

Other activities in my role as VP have included overseeing the WCET™ Wound Wise department in the American Journal of Nursing (AJN) Journal. I hope you enjoyed reading the first article which is an open access CEU article available on the AJN website (www.ajnonline.com) written by Sharon Baranoski, Kim LeBlanc and Mary Gloeckner on skin tears in the November 2016 issue. The next article will be on Medical Device Pressure Injuries written by Barbara Delmore and myself. Susan Stelton has agreed to write an ostomy article for the WCET™ Wound Wise section of AJN. Please contact Laurent Chabal and myself with your ideas for what you would like to write about for this important WCET™ initiative. It would be great to have more ostomy and continence manuscripts. Please remember that the AJN is a general nursing journal so this is a great opportunity to let non-ET nurses around the world learn about the WCET™ and our specialty practice. Thank you in advance for volunteering to write for this WCET™ section in the AJN.

As VP, I also provide comments to the NNGF and Education Committee on any forms or issues that they might want me to review. For example, I helped obtain Dr. R. Gary Sibbald as the speaker on Diabetes for the November webinar and served as the moderator. As Executive Editor Emeritus, I continue to do peer review of manuscripts submitted to the WCET™ Journal and solicit manuscripts for the journal. I also have represented the WCET™ in our official stands at some conferences.

As you can see, the role of the WCET™ VP is diverse; it keeps me busy. It is a very full role packed with many different activities. The VP works with the other members of the EB to achieve the best we can for the WCET™ organization. Thank you again for allowing me to be your 2016-2018 WCET™ Vice President. As always you can email me at [email protected].

Sincerely

Elizabeth

Tellement d’activités à transmettreElizabeth A. Ayello, PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, CWON, ETN, MAPWCA, FAAN Vice Présidente du WCET™, 2016-2018

Es gibt vieles zu berichtenElizabeth A. Ayello, PhD, RN, ACNS-BC, CWON, ETN, MAPWCA, FAAN WCET™ Vizepräsident, 2016-2018

(Thank you Jacqueline Metzher De Bortoli, member of the Swiss Stomatherapists Association’ s Comity, for this German translation)

Elizabeth

The main function of the education committee is to promote the development and maintenance of quality education programs around the world, aimed at ensuring patients with stoma, wound and continence conditions are cared for by experts. We work with Program Directors ensuring that ETNEP/REPs meet and maintain the required standards for recognition by the WCET™. Re-recognition is required every 2-5 years. Within the last 10 months at least 459 students have graduated from WCET™ recognized programs, this is excluding the programs that are recognized by a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with national ET Associations. The day-to-day work also involves helping with translation, review of application documents, in undertaking in-country site visits to check academic and clinical integrity, issuing certificates of program recognition and student certificates. We communicate with each student to ensure they are invited to become members of the WCET™ and that they are aware of the WCET™ BullETin and Journal. The chair attends monthly Executive Board Meetings, produces a monthly report, communicates with the Education Committee Members and task force groups to ensure the work of the Education Committee is ongoing, including chairing the Education Committee and ETNEP/REP Directors meetings held on congress years. Additionally many members of the education committee are involved in the WCET™ Congress, teaching on national and international ETNEP/REP programs, promoting awareness of the WCET™s work, in health promotion campaigns and in developing or disseminating evidence based educational resources.

This year I feel special mention needs to go to Ms. Mariam Mohd Nasir who is Chairing the 2018 WCET™ Congress in Kuala Lumpa; to Ms. Heidi Hevia and Ms. Vera Santos for their work in Latin America, and particularly Ms. Hevia for founding the Latin American Multidisciplinary Confederation in Wound Ostomy and Continence Care (COMLHEI), and in working to offer an international ETNEP prioritizing the Latin American nurses; to Ms. Elizabeth English and Ms. Carmen George for bringing the first ETNEP to Kenya; to our representatives from China, Hong Kong and Taiwan for collaborating to bring the total number of ETNEPs in China to 12; to Mr. Chak Hau Pang in working to achieve a MOU with the WCET™ on behalf of the Hong Kong Enterostomal Therapists Association (HKETA); to Mr. Laurent

Table below shows the of Education Committee achievements for the period April 2016 to January 2017. I would like to take this opportunity to thank these hard working members who perform their duties with great enthusiasm, on a voluntary basis, while holding down full time jobs and also their national ET association duties.

WCET™ Norma N. Gill Fondation Committee ReportArum Ratna Pratiwi, WCET™ NNGF Committee Chairperson

The NNGF Committee has four targets to be achieved in 2016;

1. Distributing Scholarship on target To distribute scholarship on the right target, we have three strategic plan, which are: – Reviewing scholarship application During April – December 2016, NNGF Committee reviewed 2 ETNEP scholarships, 1 general scholarship

and 25 membership scholarships.

Scholarship reviewed Number Scholarship Accepted

ETNEP Scholarship 2 1

General Scholarship 1 1

Membership Scholarship 25 25

– Developing scoring guideline for ETNEP Scholarship The draft of scoring guideline is being discussed among NNGF committee members. This scoring guideline

is expected to help reviewers of ETNEP scholarship application to have the same perceptions during reviewing the application.

– Revising Congress Travel Scholarship (CTS) form in web The draft has been reviewed for the 2018 congress in Kuala Lumpur – Malaysia. Hopefully, it will appeared

on WCET™ web site around April to be accessed by WCET™ members.

2. Continuing identify target and recruit new donors for NNGF funds Producing a short video to promote NNGF. We collect a short video from Nepal, Indonesia and some pictures from Kenya, the countries where NNGF has a

role to help and develop Enterostomal Therapy nursing and resulting in improving patient’s quality of life. We had a plan to produce a short promotional video for NNGF since last year. It is needed to raise awareness about what NNGF do, and gain a lot of support from members and everyone who see the video.

3. Strengthen relationship between existing donor and NNGF 3.1 Acknowledge their name in the role of honor in WCET™ website and Journal. 3.2 Writing annual report for existing donors.

4. Strengthen relationship among NNGF Committee member 4.1 Maintain communication through email 4.2 Providing update about NNGF via newsletter. As NNGF Committee chairperson, I am aware that the

newsletters were not productive in the last year. Hopefully, we will produce at least three newsletters in a year and have a better communication.

In 2017, we hope to expand and improve communication within the WCET™ international community.

In fact, Irma Puspita  Arisanty, from Indonesia and member of the Publications & Communications Committee, proposed that we use inside the Committee the Whatsapp Group as a tool to do it. This new section of the BullETin is an answer to the last Membership survey and let you know more about the work of each Committee.

Irma and her colleague Saldy Yusuf are responsible to send to our company Manager inputs for our WCET™ Twitter account and FaceBook page. Do not hesitate to share with them what you think would be interesting to be posted on these media.

Part of the work to enhance communication is the update and improvement of the WCET™ website and database. Dee Waugh, our WCET™ Congress and Meeting Coordinator, other Committee Chairpersons and members of the Executive Board are very helpful in this task. Special thanks to our WCET™ President Susan Stelton, Vice President Elizabeth A. Ayello, and Director of Administration Jennifer Bank for their outstanding help.

I continue to work, with the help of many members (especially the WCET™ IDs), to increase the number of available translations of the WCET™ Country Travel Card. We now have Travel Cards available online in the following languages: Danish, Hungarian, Japanese, Nepalese, Russian, Swedish, Tagalog (Filipino) and Thai : http://www.wcetn.org/country-travel-card. If you are interested in providing translations for additional languages, please contact me. I will

then send you the English version of the file in a Word document as a base for your translation to the target language. Your efforts would be greatly appreciated and will help ET Nurses, professionals, and people with ostomies who speak your language.

The WCET™ website now has a special Educational Resources page, http://www.wcetn.org/wcet-educational-resources, where all WCET™ books, webinars and other WCET™ educational productions are referenced.

I want to thank all WCET™ members who send me emails about what they have done, achieved, and learned. Your stories are amazing, inspiring and contribute to build relevant BullETins that let all the WORLD know about YOU and US!

Thanks to Greg Paull, member of this Committee, and his Cambridge Publishing’ team for their support. Thanks to Michelle Lee for her translation of the VP Message in Chinese, done always on time from an issue to another.

As I invite you to keep writing for the WCET™ BullETin, I also invite you to write for the WCET™ Journal.  It is essential that the important work of WCET™ members be published. Sharing the findings, lessons learned, and implications of projects and research will enable us all to build evidence based practice, improving care throughout the world. First time authors and clinicians should consider writing an article for the WCET™ column, Stories from the Bedside. Helpful tips on writing for the column can be found in an article on writing by Elizabeth A. Ayello and in guidance given by Karen Zulkowski, our Journal Executive Editor, found at : https://wocet.memberclicks.net/journal-submissions. Connecting members, the WCET™ Journal Editor, and the Editorial board is vital for our organization and practice.

It is an honor for me to be Chair of this Committee and it is a privilege to have news from you. It, indeed, makes me very proud to be an ET Nurse and a member of this Executive Board.

I am looking forward to meeting you at our next WCET™ Conference in Kuala Lumpur and celebrate together our 40th WCET™ birthday!

WCET™ Constitution Advisory Panel ReportKaren Bruton, RN BScN MCISc-WH CETN(c), Canada, Chairperson

The WCET™ Constitution is an effective and necessary governing document for running our organisation. As the WCET™ is registered as a charity and undertakes to provide services in communities, having a constitution is a legal requirement. The WCET™ constitution is also a way of ensuring that our public and funding bodies feel confident that the association is being run properly and is financially accountable.

At the 2016 WCET™ Congress in Cape Town, South Africa the membership approved many updated changes to the WCET™ Constitution. Currently, the Constitutional Advisory Panel has reviewed the Constitution and came to the consensus that there was no needed changes at this time. Please remember that items 1, 2 and 14 in the WCET™ Constitution cannot be changed as the wording is required by the Charites Commission.

We then reached out electronically via email to all WCET™ members to review and come forward with any proposed changes. The WCET™ Constitutional Advisory Panel sent an email to all WCET™ members asking for changes to the current constitution on December 6, 2016. Reminders were sent to the membership asking for their input. As of the deadline February 1, 2017 neither the WCET™ Constitutional Advisory Panel; WCET™ Director of Administration Jennifer Bank or Board Members have received any emails, comments or directions from members for potential changes.

The WCET ™ Constitutional Advisory Panel would like to say thank you to all those that took time out to review the WCET™ Constitution. For those that would like to review the current WCET™ Constitution please view the hyperlink below.

Wenzhou ETNEP ET School PR ChinaAihua Chen Second affiliated hospital of Wenzhou Medical University

In the lovely golden autumn, Wenzhou ETNEP ushered in her eighth seasons of students. On September 20th, 2016, the school held a grand open ceremony in the conference room of the Wenzhou Medical University School of Nursing to welcome the 24 students from all over the nation. Some of the students were from the northern China, such as Jilin, Heilongjiang, Gansu; while the others were from the south, including Guangdong, Shanghai. This season, the school has a male student.

At present, China has 12 ETNEP and REP, with over 1500 ET nurses trained. Wenzhou ET school as China’s fifth ETNEP has trained 145 students, accounting for 10% of the total. School upholds the concepts of “Let each wound get healed here” and “Make every ostomate a happy life”, by running each season meticulously.

Wenzhou ET School requires students to have both solid theoretical foundation and leading knowledge structure. The school set up a series of courses, including stoma care\stoma complication prevention and management\incontinence \incontinence associated dermatitis, etc. It has been 8 weeks into the season of the program, during which the school invited professional ET nurses from mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, as well as international experts from the US and Canada to train students in the theoretical lectures.

Wenzhou ET School values practical training greatly, which is believed to be the basic guarantee for ET’s professional improvement. The school cooperates with many large hospitals, such as the Second Affiliated Hospital of Wenzhou Medical University, the First and Second & Saoyifu Affiliated Hospital of Zhejiang University, Zhejiang Cancer Hospital, etc., in both Wenzhou and Hangzhou on the clinical internship program. Each participant rotates a hospital every week, so that the trainees will be exposed to all types of cases and learned the merits of each trainer. During the internship, each student must complete a product collection manual (stoma, wound, incontinence), a case study and a research project.

The school explores various forms of learning to improve the effectiveness of training. From professional theoretical lectures and workshops to product testing, from animal experiments to simulations, students are able to experience a variety of clinical scenarios and understand different characteristics of products. At the same time, students are able to pay more attention to enhance their professional capabilities, such as nurse-patient relation building, academic research and thesis writing abilities.

SingHealth Stop Pressure Injury Day 2016Ong Choo Eng, Stoma Care Nurse, Singapore WCET™ ID, Dr Juriyah and Dr Sivagame

Pressure injuries are adverse events that may impact significantly on the length of stay in health services, the cost of care, health outcomes and the comfort and quality of life of the affected individuals and have even been identified as a cause of death. Research suggests that pressure injuries are a major contributor to the care needs of patients within healthcare facilities. However 80-95% of pressure injuries are preventable. Internationally, efforts to prevent pressure injuries began in early 1980s with the formation of the National Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (NPUAP) and subsequent adaptation of the model by The European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel in 1996. The ‘STOP Pressure Injury Day’, a global event organized by healthcare professionals to create awareness of pressure injuries prevention and management, is held annually. The World Wide Pressure Injury Prevention Day was celebrated on 17th November, 2016.

WPIPD 2016 logo

This year, in our institutional efforts to manage pressure injuries, SingHealth had organized an inaugural ‘Stop Pressure Injury Day’ on 2nd Nov 2016. A first in South East Asia, the SingHealth Wound Management Workgroup and the Wound, Ostomy and Continence Nurses (WOC nurse) organized this event with more than 300 SingHealth Nurses in attendance. Activities included a keynote lecture on “Advancing International Consensus for Prevention & Management of Pressure Injuries” addressed by Prof Keryln Carville and presentation of a local research study, “A Randomised Controlled Trial to Evaluate the Incremental Effectiveness of Prophylactic Dressing and Fatty Acids Oil in the Prevention of Pressure Ulcers” by Nurse Clinician (WOC nurse) Ms Chang Yee Yee.
