Hi All,
A bumper ViaWest this month for your enjoyment brought to you primarily by The Editor Ray Willis. I
would like to use this months presidents spot to thank Ray on behalf of all us club members for the ef-
fort that goes into to producing this wonderful Magazine!
Thanks also goes to Ray for his patience with us members that promise articles and he has to chase
them up (including this!) I am sure that all you readers will agree with me that his commitment is out-
standing.
I am well aware that Ray relies on "you Folks with the Volks" submitting articles and stories. So I am
making the executive decision to reintroduce the $50 fuel Voucher for any one that gets an article pub-
lished. Send in something that you feel would be a good read (or view) to us.
Again - Good job Ray Well done we appreciate your hard work!!!
Jamie Barrett
Club President
Footnote: Just a note that club membership renewals will be posted out in July. With 75% of club members getting their ViaWest magazine on line via an email address now, the renewal notice is one of the few times that we will use your postal address.
If you have changed your postal address in the last 12 months please let Ray (as Membership Officer) know by email to [email protected] or send a letter to our PO Box.

Golf Going
Topless... I've never owned a cabriolet or
convertible car before and I prob-
ably won't, I will explain why
shortly. In saying that I really
enjoyed driving around in the TSI
for the week.
The wife had it for a couple of
sunny days and she too loved the
sense of freedom and space with
the roof down. We have a 90TSI
(hard top) so we know
what the Golf is
all about. The
Cabriolet
118TSI
with the
extra
grunt
coming
from the
1.4 litre
twincharged
petrol en-
gine along with
the extra mod cons
makes a notable difference
compared to our little humble
model.
The cabriolet has some very in-
teresting safety features.
It has the usual airbags that you
would expect from a Volkswagen
but it also has "active rollover
protection system" which in short
are two fast re-
sponse what can
only be described as
"rods" that shoot up
from behind the
rear seats should
you be unfortunate
enough to roll the
car - I was fortu-
nate enough not to
need these nor the
airbags for that matter!
While I am on the subject of fea-
tures, this model of the Golf can
be equipped with "Vienna Cool
leath-
er" (designed to reflect the suns
rays keeping the leather cool).
The car has Multi-function leather
steering wheel, chilled glovebox,
trip computer, touch screen radio,
cd and media player, to name just
a few of the standard features.
The Bi Xenon headlights gleam
and look fresh, I found the dy-
namic cornering headlight feature
distracting, but these can be
turned off.
The 7 speed DSG gearbox in
the model tested was
smooth and re-
sponsive. When
put into man-
ual shift it
acted as
it should,
sporty! No
record breaker in
the 0-100km test but
enough fun for Perth's roads. The
ride was stiff and grippy and a lot
of fun in the corners.

The all important roof opens in 9 seconds, the
mechanism is simply amazing however does not
totally hide away like the more expensive EOS
model. Once the roof is down the shape of the car
looks great in my opinion, one of the nicest cabrio-
lets in the price, I think this is to do with the active
roller protection technology, there is no need for
unsightly roll bars on show.
Sleek and sporty looks make this an appealing look-
ing car and looking at others in the price range this
is a winning model that will win the hearts of people
in the market for a topless car.
I personally felt a bit stupid and not used to being
so exposed sitting in traffic. I also felt very ex-
posed to the sun - the constant glare was almost
unbearable and I can only imagine the heat in sum-
mer months forcing you to put the roof up and get-
ting the air-conditioning cranking to cool off and
escape the harmful rays.
The Cabriolet is a solid nice looking car. Is it worth
the extra 20 or so thousand dollars compared to the
hardtop - You can be the judge of that.
Thanks to Volkswagen Group Australia
for loan of the press car for this report.

Hello members, this is an important notice for
you... Your Volkswagen Club in conjunction with the Council of Motoring Clubs is
holding the 2012 Annual Quiz Nite.
To hold a Quiz Nite takes a lot of plan-ning and involvement of members to make it happen as seamless as possi-ble.
The date is Friday 3rd August
at the Perth Soccer Club.
To make it a successful Quiz Nite, we need your participa-tion as members in the form of…
1. Helpers on the night...many hands make light work!
2. Prizes on the night...we are looking for donations of goods and ser-vices to be used for raffles, compe-titions and the Quiz Nite winners.
You may be able to get donations and sponsorship from your em-ployer, if self employed, you may be able to donate directly or if you know somebody that knows some-
body...all donations help.
Donations can be in the form of goods such as caps and shirts, car parts; or as services such as car detail, engine service, membership to a club etc.
They do not have to be VW based as all car clubs attend these Quiz Nites.
If you have been to a Quiz Nite, they are great fun...the VW Club of WA has come second in recent years...now we will be on the other side of questions and competitions on the night.
All enquiries or to arrange a donation,
contact Richard Hines on 9342 8703.

Auto One Classic Car
Show 2012 by
Jamie Barrett
This years Classic car show started a day early for some, Whiteman Park is a camp free zone for 364 days of the year with the only exception made for the show. 10 from the club braved the light rain and chilly night.
We shacked up under the wooden pa-goda with the smell of sausages (and a can of stew) wafting past while hav-ing a couple of quiet "ones" with the entertaining fellas from the Mini Car Club - A good night was had.
We woke with only the need the move the vehicle 20' to get in the line up ready for the display! Being there that early gives you a great opportunity to watch the vehicles moving in, Ford Sierra Cosworth, AC Cobra, Indian motor bike followed by a WW1 Tank! list would go on for ages as the event attracts around 1000 vehicles.
This years events theme was "New and Old". Our clubs oldest was Frank McKinnell’s 1961 Beetle and the new-est being Tom Johnstone in his lovely modified imported Scirocco.
We had Buggies, Split Screen and Bay Window Kombis including Patrick Spiteri’s Trophy winning Single cab and Ton Verbunt’s Double cab, Rich-ard Hines Manx SR, Beetles, Dave Moore’s Porsche 914 (VW badged in the States) and the clubs exposed and sectioned floorpan as part of our Volkswagen display.
The looks and comments from the viewing public were a pleasure to see, so many stories and nice comments about the old Dubs were shared. And Tom’s gleaming Scirocco drew the crowds.
A car worth mentioning was a Polished Aluminium bodied AC Cobra with a hand built custom chassis from Europe! Simply amazing…...
A big thank you goes out to Sue and her team from CMC for organising WA's biggest annual car show...a big effort and lots off work involved to make this happen.
Already looking forward to next year.

South West Monthly
Gatherings in
Busselton Sunday 13th May...
We had limited numbers on Sunday due to the weather and it being moth-ers day...not to worry, the rain staying away and it was great that some new-ies turned up without their VW's that are keen to come along in June. One actually went home and came back in their P plated curve screen superbug.
A big hand to Ray who drove down from Perth...big effort The meet gave us the perfect opportunity to talk about the upcoming Busso drive inn event.
Kim
For me it was a great reason to get out of the house for a couple of days and back into my Beetle (albeit water-cooled) for a drive. However it was only a quick 2.5 hours cruise from home, but what better place to go to than down south.
Although there were only a few cars, the group attracted a few admir-ers...even those that want to attend next month...and there was plenty to talk about as always.
Yes I can only see this growing from strength to strength, especially with the commitment coming from Kim, Mark and Gary. It was good to catch up with Mark in person for the first time. Thanks guys.
Maybe there is a challenge for another committee member to make the trip next month.
Ray
Not much i can add you guy's have just about covered it. Always good for a catch up and very nice to meet you to Ray.
Glad you made the most of your trip down with a few tourist shots. good stuff hope to catch up with you again soon.
I'm sure next month (subject to the weather) will see the numbers up again. It will always be hit and miss this time of year but I'm sure it will con-tinue to grow..

Profile Kim Muste of Margaret River
I was born in Tasmania and spent
6 fantastic years as a kid on Flin-
ders Island. My first car was an
immaculate ’67 Beetle that I
rolled on my way to WA just out-
side Kimba in South Australia.
Arriving in WA I first lived in Al-
bany for a few months where I
bought another air cooled classic,
a very rusty Fiat 500. I then had
the good gear from the rolled
Beetle put into a Taipan beach
buggy that I regrettably sold to
move to Perth for study.
Work, marriage, a move to Mar-
garet River and three children
somehow put VW ownership on
the back burner, although my
wife Kerry had a 71 Beetle for
years.
About 5 years ago I purchased
another ’67 that’s had an engine
rebuild and tidy up to get back on
the road.

Just over a year ago I took the
easier option to quality VW own-
ership and purchased my 1965
birch green Beetle. It was ac-
quired as you see it, although I
have replaced a number of non-
standard parts with original items
and work is ongoing. Its history
includes winning 2nd and 3rd
prizes in its age category at the
2010 and 2009 Sydney VW Na-
tionals.
Highlights of my ownership so far
include the 65 Beetle being the
bridal car at our eldest daughter’s
wedding along with the ‘67 Beetle
as the bridesmaids car, taking
part in a German car display at
the local Vintage Stomp, two days
filming in Margaret
River for the movie
Drift (time will tell
if it’s in the final
movie), and on
show at the 2011
Day of the
Volkswagen
(DOVW) in Perth.
Cruising around in
my ‘65 Beetle with
the family and
meeting the people
it attracts always
puts a smile on my face.
I became a member of the
Volkswagen Club of WA at the
2010 DOVW. With support of the
VW Club along with some South
West VW friends, we have organ-
ised informal monthly gatherings
for Volkswagen enthusiasts at the
beachfront car park in Busselton
on the second Sunday of every
month (12:30pm onwards). We
encourage everybody with a
Volkswagen to come along, re-
gardless if it’s old or new, or what
condition it’s in.
More South West news and activities can be found on the VW Club WA web-site forum...and keep a look out here in future magazines as well for more pro-files of our SW members and their cars.

Volkswagen up! Claims An-
other Top Award at Fleet
World Honours Volkswagen’s new small car, the up!, has claimed yet another award, being named Best City Car in the 2012 Fleet World Honours. The trophy was pre-sented at a recent ceremony held at the Royal Automobile Club, Pall Mall.
The Fleet World Honours are present-ed annually, and the judging process combines the expert opinion of the Fleet World editorial team with the ob-jective values provided by a number of leading leasing companies and fleet data providers.
The judging panel is chaired by Steve Moody, Editor of Fleet World, and in-cludes John Kendall, Alex Grant and Ross Durkin from the Fleet World edi-torial team. Residual value, mainte-nance and reliability data is provided by ALD Automotive, Hitachi Capital Vehicle Solutions, Lex Autolease, LeasePlan and Arval. Market value data is provided by EurotaxGlass and VIPDATA.
Commenting on the up!, Fleet World Editor, Steve Moody, said: ‘Volkswagen’s up! is a breath of fresh air, managing to be both characterful and practical, retro and modern. A clever infotainment system, bright spa-cious cabin and parsimonious three-cylinder engines ensure the up! is a classy addition to the sector.’
Fleet World’s Managing Editor, Ross Durkin, added: ‘Judging the Fleet World Honours does not get any easi-er. In the last year we have seen some tremendous new cars launched – many powered by alternative fuels – as well as the introduction of some very innovative new fleet services. When judging the car awards we were very mindful of key issues such as emis-sions levels, safety, resale values and reliability. However we also have to remember that essential ingredient – desirability – when assessing a car’s overall position and that can be seen in the results.’
The Volkswagen up! is a small car in need of a large trophy cabinet. The Fleet World Honour will be added to its list of current awards which includes small/city car accolades from CarBuyer website and Top Gear magazine, as well as the overall What Car? Car of the Year and 2012 World Car of the Year titles.
Volkswagen’s Fleet Marketing Manag-er, Rob Taylor, claimed the award on
behalf of the brand, and commented: ‘We’re delighted to win this award for the up!. Because of its size and sector, the up! is very much seen as a retail proposition, but there’s no doubt it’s punching above its weight in the fleet market. Fleet managers are attracted by its low whole-life cost proposition, high quality and big car feel, while driv-ers enjoy its on-road manners, low tax liability and Volkswagen badge.’ He added: ‘For a small car it’s clearly ca-pable of big things!’
31ST GTI Meeting at
Wörthersee Polo WRC Street concept car: 2.0-
litre engine with 220 PS
For more than 30 years, the ‘GTI Meet-ing at Wörthersee’ has been a holiday in the calendar of fans of sporty Volkswagen vehicles. An event that will also this year see fans from right across Europe coming to the largest GTI meeting in the world in Austria. from Wolfsburg. The key component of this highly dynamic soft top Golf is the 2.0-litre engine with 210 PS fitted for the first time in the Cabriolet. It is avail-able with two engine/gearbox versions: as a manual gearbox or with the fast-changing dual-clutch gearbox (DSG), each with 6 speeds. A standard feature for all cus-tomers who get to indulge in the sporty driving performance of the Golf GTI Cabriolet is the XDL electronic differ-ential lock on the front axle, which en-sures perfect traction, enhanced agility and the utmost driving stability. To complete the picture, this hot hatch is fitted with 17-inch alloy wheels of the type ‘Denver’ (18-inch wheels of the type ‘Detroit’ are optionally available) in addition to a new diffuser with chrome tailpipes.
Polo WRC Street: From motor racing to the street is the motto of the Polo WRC Street concept car. At Wörthersee, Volkswagen will be presenting for the first time a preview of an extremely sporty small series, which is due to be launched in late 2013. With its highly unique and dis-tinctive design, this model cuts an im-pressive figure with its rear spoiler, diffuser, sports suspension and an in-scription with R-WRC logos. A power-ful 220 PS 2.0-litre TSI engine produces motorsport-like perfor-mance.
Polo R-WRC: With the newly developed Polo R WRC, Volkswagen Motorsport is presenting a road-going proto-
type for the FIA World Rally Championship. The “hottest Polo ever” – as it was called by Volkswagen Head of Develop-ment Dr. Ulrich Hackenberg even at its first official airing – will be starting its tour around the globe from 2013 at numerous WRC
races. At the heart of this racing ver-sion beats a 1.6-litre TSI engine
with approx. 300 PS power out-put, which ensures impressive
acceleration from 0 to 100 km/h in 4.1 seconds.
GTI Black Dynamic: Black as the night, with a red/black colour concept and lowered sports suspension, the ‘GTI Black Dynamic’ will be making an appearance at Wörthersee. Since Oc-tober last year, nine Volkswagen ap-

prentices – four young women and five young men – have been working on their ‘Apprentice Golf GTI 2012’.
Their objective: vehicle concept de-sign, styling, engine version and numerous details are meant to convey their interpretation of a classic sports car. Elegant and simple but with numerous stylish details, the ‘Black Dynamic’ is a real head turner. It also features a 1,800 Watt sound system with nine loudspeakers, which takes up the entire boot space.
This year’s ‘Golf GTI Black Dynamic’ is the fifth vehicle project to make its de-but amongst the petrol heads in Aus-tria.
Golf GTI ‘White Concept’: The attrac-tive design study Golf GTI ‘White Con-cept’ is characterised by its remarkable ‘Oryx White matt’ paintwork. The vehi-cle interior affords an exciting black/red contrast. In addition to the sports seats in Nappa leather, red contrasting stitching adorns numerous details such as the steering wheel, handbrake lever and door armrests. A door sill trim – with the GTI logo and honey-comb pattern in White Matt and Alu-minium – go to complete the unique appearance of the Golf GTI ‘Concept White’.

The International Academy of the Digi-tal Arts and Sciences presents the Webby Awards, also known as the “Oscars of the Internet”, every year.

The Volkswagen Beetle official website is a multi-screen site programmed in HTML5: This scrolling site allows users to navigate vertically and horizontally through the content. The innovative navigation concept creates the impres-sion that the user is driving in a Beetle.
The website was designed and real-ized by the communications agency DDB Tribal, Berlin.
“A dynamic car needs a dynamic presentation”, said Luca de Meo, Di-rector of Marketing at the Volkswagen Group and the Volkswagen brand. “That is why the Volkswagen Beetle website is optimally tailored to the ve-hicle’s target group and we are delight-ed that our courage to embrace inno-vative communication on the Web has been rewarded with four Webby Awards.”
Volkswagen unveils four
new models Wolfsburg / Leipzig, 01 June 2012 - At Auto Mobil International (AMI) in Leip-zig (2nd-10th June) Volkswagen is showcasing no less than four new models from the CC, Scirocco, Beetle and Polo ranges.
Volkswagen CC R-Line – World
premiere no. 1 in Leipzig
Three months after the launch of the new Volkswagen CC, the exclusive R-Line version of the sports saloon is making its world premiere at AMI. The R-Line’s exterior features include a redesigned front bumper complete with
vertical chrome bars painted in gleam-ing black and bottom radiator grille. Individualised side sills, ‘Mallory’ 17-inch alloys (five double spokes) and a further chrome element integrated into the cover above the fog lights com-plete the exterior package. The classy Volkswagen CC is characterised on the inside by redesigned door tread plates with R-Line lettering and a leather sports steering wheel with mul-tifunction controls. The radiator grille and steering wheel are also adorned by an R-Line logo.
Scirocco GTS – World premiere no.
2 in Leipzig
It was 30 years ago that the first Sci-rocco rolled off the production line. The model was typified by a strikingly sporty appearance. Volkswagen is now continuing this tradition with the debut of the new GTS, delivering up to 155 kW / 210 PS. Catching the eye immediately are the coloured stripes on the bonnet, the roof complete with rear spoiler and the tailgate, designed in the style of racing cars of the 70s and 80s. Red brake callipers (210 PS
version), custom-designed front and rear bumpers, exposed side sills, body-coloured side trim, wing mirrors colour coordinated with the stripes, burnished 18-inch ‘Thunder’ alloy wheels with black trim, a sporty diffuser and GTS badges on the front wings finish off the sporty exterior to perfection. Inside the car the dominant colours are black and

red. With the return of the Scirocco GTS the legendary golf ball gear lever knob is also celebrating its comeback – it wasn’t only a distinctive feature of the first Golf GTI, but also of the 1982 Scirocco GTS!
Beetle Fender Edition – World
premiere no. 3 in Leipzig
The Beetle is the first and to date only car in Europe that can be ordered with a sound system from guitar and amp makers Fender. In 2011, Volkswagen showcased a concept car at the IAA in Frankfurt that was designed to pay homage to the legendary American company. That was the exclusive Bee-tle Fender. With its powerful looks and no less powerful sound system (400 watts), the concept car thrilled visitors to the show so much that Volkswagen decided to make it into a production car. That vehicle is now making its world premiere at AMI 2012. The new Beetle model can be ordered in two colours: ‘Black Uni’ or ‘Deep Black Pearl Effect’. Black has been chosen so that the Beetle Fender Edition’s many chrome details – including 18-inch ‘Disc’ alloys as standard – are shown off to best effect. The standard specification includes bi-xenon head-lamps and LED daytime running lights. The car’s interior also has a very re-fined appearance. One striking feature is the dash pad. Complete with chrome-plated Fender logo, it is fin-ished in ‘Sunburst’, the two-tone wood design of many Fender guitars. Also included as standard are sport seats, air conditioning and, of course, the Fender sound system with USB inter-face (media in). The Beetle Fender Edition is being launched this autumn.
CrossPolo ‘Urban White’ – Motor
show premiere
At the same time as the car is being launched in Germany, Volkswagen is showing the new CrossPolo ‘Urban White’ at Leipzig. This special model is the only CrossPolo that can be or-dered in this classy shade of white, actually called ‘Oryx White Mother of Pearl Effect’. Also exclusively tailored to the new model are the 17-inch ‘Budapest’ alloy wheel rims, available in black or white. The standard body-work specification also includes black roof rails and wing mirrors, plus tinted rear windows. Con-trasting with the white external paint-work, the dominant colour inside the CrossPolo ‘Urban White’ is black. Standard features of this exclusive special edition mod-el include sports seats in a combina-tion of fabric and
alcantara, climate and cruise control and the RCD 210 radio/CD system. The starting price in Germany for entry into the world of the new CrossPolo ‘Urban White’ is €18,975 (with 70 PS petrol engine).
Note: TDI, TSI, DSG and Twincharger are registered trademarks of Volkswagen AG or other compa-nies of the Volkswagen Group in Germany and other countries. Equipment details and technical data apply to the model range sold in Germany. Details for other countries may vary.
