    VETERANS DAY, 2011

    BY THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA

    A PROCLAMATION

    Today, our Nation comes together to honor our veterans and commemorate the legacyo proound service and sacrice they have upheld in pursuit o a more perect Union.Through their steadast deense o Americas ideals, our service members have ensuredour country still stands strong, our ounding principles still shine, and nations around theworld know the blessings o reedom. As we oer our sincere appreciation and respect toour veterans, to their amilies, to those who are still in harms way, and to those we havelaid to rest, let us rededicate ourselves to serving them as well as they have served theUnited States o America.

    Our men and women in uniorm are bearers o a proud military tradition that has beendutiully passed orwardrom generation to generationor more than two centuries.In times o war and peace alike, our veterans have served with courage and distinction inthe ace o tremendous adversity, demonstrating an unaltering commitment to Americaand our people. Many have made the ultimate sacrice to preserve the country they loved.The selfessness o our service members is unmatched, and they remind us that there areew things more undamentally American than doing our utmost to make a dierence inthe lives o others.

    Just as our veterans stood watch on reedoms rontier, so have they saeguarded the pros-perity o our Nation in our neighborhoods, our businesses, and our homes. As teachersand engineers, doctors and parents, these patriots have made contributions to civilian liethat serve as a testament to their dedication to the welare o our country. We owe thema debt o honor, and it is our moral obligation to ensure they receive our support or aslong as they live as proud veterans o the United States Armed Forces. This year, as ourtroops in Iraq complete their mission, we will honor them and all who serve by workingtirelessly to give them the care, the benets, and the opportunities they have earned.

    On Veterans Day, we pay tribute to our veterans, to the allen, and to their amilies. Tohonor their contributions to our Nation, let us strive with renewed determination to keepthe promises we have made to all who have answered our countrys call. As we ulllour obligations to them, we keep aith with the patriots who have risked their lives topreserve our Union, and with the ideals o service and sacrice upon which our Republicwas ounded.

    With respect or and in recognition o the contributions our service members have madeto the cause o peace and reedom around the world, the Congress has provided (5 U.S.C.6103(a)) that November 11 o each year shall be set aside as a legal public holiday to honorour Nations veterans.

    NOW, THEREFORE, I, BARACK OBAMA, President o the United States o America,do hereby proclaim November 11, 2011, as Veterans Day. I encourage all Americans torecognize the valor and sacrice o our veterans through appropriate public ceremoniesand private prayers. I call upon Federal, State, and local ocials to display the fag o theUnited States and to participate in patriotic activities in their communities. I call on allAmericans, including civic and raternal organizations, places o worship, schools, andcommunities to support this day with commemorative expressions and programs.
