Vertical KO Drum Sizing (Ver 1.0.0)
1.0 Description
This program is useful for sizing a vertical KO drum, with or wothout a mist eliminato
2.0 Capabilities
2.1 User friendly: The program is prepared as a user friendly Excel Worksheet.
3.0 Limitations
1) This program is limited to Vertical KO drum sizing. Horizontal KO Drum cannot be
2) This program is formulated specifically for Vertical KO drums with or without (empty
KO drums with Vane Packs or Multi-cyclones as internals or for Filter separators or Cy
3) This program is restricted only to two phase (vapour-liquid only) separation calcul
It is not valid for liquid-liquid separation or for 3-phase separation.
4) This program uses only the Souders-Brown proportanality constant 'k' for sizing. I
minimum droplet size to be separated for sizing.
5) This program does not calculate the mesh size and diameter of the demister pad. O
General process duty (100 mm), and
High effieciency (150 mm)
are suggested for sizing.
6) Program does not calculate the pressure drop across the drum and the mesh, als
liquid/ vapor inlet, outlet nozzles.

coloured cells are Output cells.
Following Procedure to be followed.
Step 1) Select the type of vertical KO drum - either Empty or with Demister pad - by
Program calculates the height of the drum accordingly.
Step 2) Select the type of separation efficiency desired (only for KO drum with m
Program selects 100 mm thick mist mat for General Process duty and
Step 3) Based on the gas and liquid flowrates, gas and liquid densities, the progr
indicated on tab 'k value'. The program then calculates the vessel diam
Step 4) Select Inlet nozzle size to obtain values as given below:
i) KO Drum with Mist Eliminator.
rVVV2 < 3750
rMVM2 < 1500
ii) Empty KO Drum.
rVVV2 < 3750
rMVM2 < 6000
rVVV2 < 3750
rMVM2 < 6000
Step 5) Select vapor outlet nozzle size such that.
I) rVVV2 < 3750 for vapor outlet nozzle.
Select liquid outlet nozzle size such that velocity through the nozzle do
Step 6) Program calculates the height of the vessel based on the following:
a) Height from mist Eliminator to top of Tan line h1 (mm) = 150 x dia (appl
b) Thickness of Mist Eliminator h2 (mm) = 100 (for General process duty
c) Height from top of Inlet Nozzle to Mist eliminator h3 (mm) = If 450 x
d) Height from high liquid level to Bottom of Inlet Nozzle h4 (mm) = If 300
e) High liquid level above the tan line (Input to the program).
