VERSATEC COMPACT HORIZONTAL SPECIFICATION CATALOG
WaterFurnace Versatec Compact Horizontal units are an excellent choice for commercial or institutional applica-tions with multiple small zones in boiler/cooling tower or geothermal applications. Units are available in 3 sizes (¾, 1 and 1½ tons). Versatec Compact Horizontal units provide the user with a great combination of performance, flexibility, options and value. The physical dimensions of the units are similar to older vintage water source heat pumps made by other manufacturers to facilitate retro-fits.
All Versatec units utilize R-22 refrigerant and PSC blower motors. Standard electromechanical controls with compressor control modules are included to facilitate easy installation and quick service. Airflow options are either left side or end dis-charge, all with right side return air. Heat exchangers can be copper (standard) or cupro-nickel (when used on open loop systems). Heavy gauge metal cabinets add durability to the system.

VERSATEC COMPACT HORIZONTAL SPECIFICATION CATALOG
Versatec water source heat pumps are designed to meet the heating/air conditioning requirements of condo-miniums, hotels/motels, apartments, offices, schools and hospitals. The Versatec Compact Horizontal heat pump line from 9,000 to 18,000 BTUH consists of 3 unit sizes. Each unit size can be provided for operation at various supply voltages. Versatec Compact horizontal units are safety listed through ETL. All Versatec VLC units are de-signed to operate with liquid temperatures between 25°F and 110° F.
Quality and FlexibilityQuality, flexibility, efficiency and performance are major
requirements for all WaterFurnace products, and our Versatec product line is no exception. Each water source heat pump is factory assembled and computer run-tested to ensure reliability. All refrigerant brazing is performed in a nitrogen atmosphere and units are deep evacuated to less than 200 microns prior to refrigerant charging.
For maximum flexibility, each unit is available in right-hand air return and have end or side air discharge options.
The CabinetThe cabinet is constructed of enviromentally respon-
sible galvanized steel for maxmum corrosion resistance. Servicing to all internal components is done easily through
Design Featuresremovable access panels. The interiors of the top and side panels and the bottom of the unit are covered with 1/2” thick, 1-1/2 lb density coated glass fiber. Units are supplied with hanger brackets and grommets to facilitate instal-lation. The standard size filters (1") are held in place by factory mounted brackets. Cabinet design allows for side or end discharge in right return units as shown in Figure 1.
The flush mounted water connections (1/2" FPT) and copper condensate connections (3/4" FPT) are internally secured requiring no backup wrenches. Threaded copper adaptors are low-temperature soldered to prevent mis-shaping or weakening of the fitting, eliminating potential start up leaks.
The electrical components are located in the compres-sor section of the unit. Two knockouts are provided on the side and front of the cabinet to facilitate main power and low voltage control wiring through separate holes. All wir-ing connections are made inside the cabinet for maximum safety. Power wiring is conveniently applied to box lugs directly on the compressor contactor. Each unit is rated to accept time delay breakers (USA only) for overcurrent protection of the branch circuit.
The control box is accessible through a panel and houses the major operating electrical controls including the transformer, compressor relay and fan relay. The corner-located control box allows field wiring from two sides. Each component is readily accessible for service or replacement.

Each refrigeration system includes a hermetic com-pressor, reversing valve, water-to-refrigerant coaxial heat exchanger, high stability thermostatic expansion valve, airside coil and safety controls. Three panels allow for ac-cess to the compressor, coaxial heat exchanger, reversing valve and safety controls. High and low pressure ports are provided for easy servicing, and the coaxial heat exchang-er and all refrigerant suction lines are insulated to prevent condensation at low entering water temperatures.
Efficient compressors provide super quiet operation with high reliability. All compressors are isolated from the bottom panel with rubber isolators. The compressor junc-tion box is always located toward the front access panel.
The high stability bi-directional thermostatic expansion valve delivers optimum refrigerant flow over a wide range of conditions and provides bi-directional operation without troublesome check valves. External pressure regulating flow control valves are not recommended, as they tend to compete with the TX valve.
The reversing valve is “cool-brazed” at the factory to prevent damage from excess heat and is energized in the cooling mode.
The two heat exchanger components incorporate the most recent heat transfer technologies. The oversized
coaxial heat exchanger has a convoluted copper (optional cupronickel) inner tube and a steel outer tube and is designed for a maximum heat transfer at normal and low water flow rates (down to 1.5 gpm per ton on well water systems). This minimizes pressure drop and also enhanc-es freeze protection.
Safety controls include a low pressure switch for loss of charge protection and a high pressure switch which is designed to lock out compressor operation at extreme conditions.
Fan SectionThe one or two fan section access panels provide ser-
vice access to the fan motor.The fan motor is a three speed (four speed on VLC09
and VLC12) long life PSC type with internal thermal over-load protection. Large low rpm blowers result in decreased noise and also provide high static capability. The motor is isolated from the fan housing for minimum vibration trans-mission. All multi-speed motors have a terminal strip (on the motor) for simple motor speed change without going back to the control box. The discharge panel has 1” duct flange allowing adequate material for connecting the duct-work.

Accessories and Other OptionsSolenoid Valve (Field Installed)
A 24 VAC solenoid valve (24 VA maximum current draw) can be furnished and field wired so as to be ener-gized whenever there is a call for compressor operation. The solenoid valve will be quick opening and spring re-turned closed. Slow opening valves will be acceptable only if equipped with an end switch to permit compressor op-eration only after full opening. The body size of the valve shall match the water connection size of the heat pump.Cupronickel Heat Exchanger
Cupronickel (90/10) coaxial heat exchangers offer bet-ter corrosion protection and are recommended when more corrosive loop fluids are expected such as brackish well water, etc.Supply/Return Hose Kits
This kit contains a complete set of supply and return hoses, consisting of 24'' stainless braided fire resistant hoses with MPT x FPT swivel with MPT adaptor, two (2) bronze ball valves (one with P/T plug), Y-strainer with blow-down valve, and Hays Mesurflo automatic flow control valve with P/T plugs. The kit is shipped factory assembled and tagged. Specify gpm (in half gpm incre-ments) and tagging for each hose kit.Closed Loop Flow Center
The flow center is an insulated pump assembly which includes all pumping and valving for small closed loop ground source systems to 20 gpm.Hydronic Loop Controller
The hydronic loop controller is a microprocessor-based control panel for control of water loop heat rejector (tower), heat supplier (boiler), and/or water well pumps and circula-tion pumps. Includes audible and visual alarms, tempera-ture indication and add-on options of low flow switches, remote alarm sensor wells and pump alternator.
Compressor Sound PackageThis package provides an acoustical wrap for the
compressor.Hanger Kit (Field Installed)The hanger kit accessory consists of galvanized steel brackets, bolts, lock washers and isolators and shall be designed to fasten to the unit corner posts for suspension from 3/8" threaded rods. Digital Wall-Mounted Thermostats
A digital 24 VAC wall-mounted thermostat can be furnished. The sub-base includes Off-Heat-Cool-Auto, On-Auto fan switch and a fault light.

Engineering Guide SpecificationsGeneral
The water source heating/cooling units shall be a re-verse cycle suspended type with horizontal air inlet and discharge. Units shall be designed to operate with liquid temperatures between 25°F and 110°F and listed by a nationally recognized safety testing laboratory or agency, such as ETL Testing Laboratory. Each unit shall be com-puter run-tested at the factory, and mounted on a pallet, and stretch wrapped for shipping.
An optional additional four-year warranty covering the compressor and major parts shall be available.

galvanized steel. The interior shall be insulated with 1/2" thick, multi-density, coated glass fiber with edges sealed or tucked under flanges. Access panels shall be provided and be removable with supply and return ductwork in place. A 1" duct collar shall be provided on the supply air opening. Standard-size filters (1") shall be provided. Units shall have a filter bracket. Units shall have a right air inlet and side or end air discharge.
Refrigerant CircuitAll units shall contain a sealed refrigerant circuit includ-
ing a hermetic motor-compressor, bidirectional thermal ex-pansion valve, finned tube air-to-refrigerant heat exchang-er, reversing valve, and a coaxial tube water-to-refrigerant heat exchanger.
Compressors shall be high-efficiency, designed for heat pump duty and mounted on vibration isolators. Compres-sor motors shall be single-phase with internal overload protection. The finned tube coil shall be sized for low-face velocity.
The coaxial water-to-refrigerant heat exchanger shall be designed for close approach temperatures, constructed of a convoluted copper (optional cupronickel) inner tube and a steel outer tube, and capable of 450 psi water and
refrigerant working pressures. The thermal expansion valve shall provide proper superheat over the entire liquid temperature range with minimal “hunting.” The valve shall operate bi-directionally without the use of check valves. Externally mounted pressure regulating flow control valves are not acceptable.
The water-to-refrigerant heat exchanger and refrigerant suction lines shall be insulated to prevent condensation at low liquid temperatures.
Fan Motor and AssemblyThe fan shall be direct drive with a dynamically balanced
wheel. The housing and wheel shall be designed for quiet, low outlet velocity operation. The fan motor shall operate at multiple speeds, be high-efficiency, provide high static capability, include three or four on-motor selectable airflow options, be permanently lubricated, have thermal overload protection and be isolated from the housing by rubber grommets.
ElectricalA terminal block with screw terminals shall be provided for
field low-voltage wiring, and a 75VA low-voltage transformer shall be provided. Line voltage box lugs shall be provided for unit wiring. Units shall have knockouts for entrance of low and line voltage wiring.
PipingSupply and return water connections shall be copper
threaded fittings (1/2" FPT) mechanically fastened to unit cabinet, eliminating the need for backup wrenches when making field piping connections. Threaded copper adap-tors shall be low-temperature soldered to prevent misshap-ing or weakening of the fitting, eliminating potential start up leaks.
All water piping shall be insulated to prevent condensation at low liquid temperatures. The condensate connection shall be flush mounted 3/4" FPT and must be trapped externally.
