There is much to tell you! I know the beginning of the year communication may

be a bit dense; however, I want to provide a clear and continued flow of

communication for your benefit. Please see me with any questions you may have.

I look forward to our continued focus on our first powerful practice of Speaking

and Listening in all classes every day. I am also very excited to continue our

active cycle with the second powerful practice of Content Differentiation in all

classes and CBI!

Vaughn Vision

Vaughn graduates are productive participants in their

community. Vaughn graduates advocate for a better life and

function at the highest possible level of independence.

Programs

Vaughn-ICRE PEP

Our occupational/transition satellite program at 1950 W. Roosevelt now has 2

classes. We also have a CPS vendor number and are able to produce and sell

products made by our students to other schools. Ms. Steier will be assisting me

with leadership activities-duties. Ms. Smith is also helping with program

development.

CORE

Our brand new transition- occupational and CBI related program, will continue

this year. We have expanded to two classes-cohorts. We will have a classroom at

Wright College and partnerships with the YMCA, St. Cyprian’s Food Pantry

(thanks Ms. Bonness ) and Walgreen’s to name a few. Ms. Neuman & Ms.

Tempel will facilitate-lead this amazing program! Thank you CEO Jackson for

supporting this college access initiative!

Occ Prep - School Store

We will continue to access the industry within our school. This year, we will

house the office/classroom supplies out of the main office and develop and run a

school store. Mr. Swanson will continue to facilitate. We will begin to plan for a

student incentive store to reward schoolwide and classroom specific SEL

Expectations. Ms. Bayliss has expressed interest in helping with this. We will

need a few more teachers on board for development.

Aramark, Have Dreams and SEARCH Inc.

We will continue to supplement our amazing work on campus with our post-

secondary community partners. We are appreciative of Dr. Keenan’s support of

our PEP program with Have Dreams. Students will be receiving vocational

training at Northwestern University and hospital. COO Arnie Rivera assisted in

developing a program where several students will be trained as Aramark

custodians. They will receive certification and hopefully, employment. Thanks

you Casey Decker for being supportive.

Science-Occ Prep- researched best practices for ASD and social skills = wait for

it.....CHICKENS!!!

Ms. Bonness has led the efforts in using research on the social modeling of

chickens with individuals diagnosed with ASD. I am learning a great deal about

chickens and the applied research for our students with Autism. We have a

chicken coop made by the students. Ms. Kalinski will assist with one of her Occ

Prep classes

SEL/ABA/PBIS

Stephanie and faculty have worked extremely hard using data from classrooms

and our intensive interventions the last two years to assess areas of need and

develop a school wide protocol to increase socially valid behavior. We are excited

to release the work to all teachers for the purpose of developing a cohesive SEL

program in all classrooms. We will still use: calm classroom (see , SOAR, 101

Ways to Teach Social Skills (see Mr. Troyke and Ms. Fitzpatrick), and ABA daily

in all classes. Any additions to our SEL focus will involve very basic data

collection and interventions. Everything will be done over time-not overnight.

Assemblies will take place on the first Wednesday 9/6/17 (Stephanie will

communicate further).

Art and Adapted PE

We will be making enhancements to our ART and PE program this year. Our

teachers will receive training on adapted PE and the Art program will have a

student specific focus with reading and Speaking and Listening Implementation.

Framework Specialists:

Ms. Bayliss and Ms. Neuman are our CPS Framework Specialists. There is a

new structure that will focus on specific areas of the Framework for teaching

each month. Vaughn will access our amazing teachers for strategies related to:

Speaking and Listening and Content Differentiation this year. Reach out to them

for resources.

Teachers Coaching Teachers

All of us have skills and talents that, when shared, will make us and our students

grow. I have developed teacher coaching relationships at other schools with

great success. I believe it is time to do that at Vaughn in a structured, skill

specific ritual. As we move through the Differentiation Cycle (probably a five

year cycle), I will be asking ALL teachers to become involved in a coaching

event. This will be totally voluntary. See me with any questions. Dara Bayliss will

begin her journey with curriculum and assessment support. Email me if you

CBI

We will pick up where we left off with the event on 11/16- remember??? You

know, the one where you critiqued my work with differentiating a McDonald’s

trip-seems like years ago. We will enhance our instructional focus and progress

monitoring on community Based Instruction events. Essential CBI Questions:

What goal is student X working on and how do I know the progress s/he is

making?

AdvancED Accreditation

We will be going through the process this year. Any teachers involved in the

previous process should reach out to me. I have completed initial documents;

now, the faculty will take over the process.

TEACCH Training

Teachers will use the Structured Teaching training from Have Dreams. All

teachers will receive the training this year. TEACCH can be adapted for all

students.

Wilson Reading

Ms. Westrich will continue to use this research based curriculum to enhance

fluency and comprehension.

PAs and Powerful Practices reveal the essence of our school

Performance Assessments: The PPLC will continue their efforts in your support.

We will archive our students’ PAs in the spreadsheets each quarter. Many

professors (most recently University of Chicago Faculty) have reviewed and

extolled the amazing work you are doing. Remember, we will use the criteria for

Present Levels and goal writing in IEPs when appropriate. When conducted with

fidelity as a team (Everybody Onboard), this is a great way to reduce workload,

develop common rituals, and execute best practices.

Powerful Practices: Continue your intentional and strategic work with Speaking

and Listening in every class-everyday. Continue or begin your work with Content

Differentiation.

New Faculty

Jamie Kalinski- Educator

I grew up in the northwest suburbs, I currently live in the South Loop with

my husband and two kiddos (2.5 yrs, and 1 yr)

I started my SPED career at NSSED (a co-op up north) as a self-contained

classroom teacher for students in middle school and junior high. After

almost 5 years I made the switch to CPS where I was teaching part life

skills/occ prep and part Eng/Math inclusion at Ogden International. I then

transferred to Locke Elementary in 2015 where I have since been teaching

self-contained K-2 Sped, but I have been looking to get back to where my

heart really lies, working with diverse learners helping support both

academics and life skills. I am really excited to be coming to Vaughn this

year, and I am looking forward to meeting everyone!

Katie Freely Sullivan Educator

I have worked in education for 13 years as a Special Education Teacher.

The farthest place I traveled this summer was to Bonita Springs, Florida.

My hidden talent/hobby.....are-I love cooking and creating foods from

scratch and I also really enjoy restoring/refinishing/repurposing furniture.

Mustafa Baig- SECA

I have been with CPS as a substitute teacher since June 2015 The

farthest place I traveled this summer was a road trip to Disney World,

Florida with my family. I attached a picture of me with my 2 daughters at

Magic Kingdom. I am good at computer networking. I am CCNA certified

and enjoy working with computer hardware.
