It is based on the Naval Hymn, Eternal Father, Strong to Save. After a dramatic fanfare introduction (horns should play aggressively), the hymn is stated in a choral fashion. The first variant (at measure 29 ) features interplay between mirrored polychords in the winds and rhythmic figures in the percussion section, followed by a section evoking the sea (including some appropriate quotations). The second variant (at measure 74 ) is reminiscent of the music of Erik Satie. The 2/4 section in the third variant (measures 137 - 138 ) should be rehearsed slowly: first clarinets, horns and vibes; then cornets, then saxes; then together. The upper woodwind part at measure 168 should sound easy and shouldn’t rush or overpower the melody in the trombones, etc. The chimes at measure 182 are an important part of the dramatic conclusion to this work. 1 — Conductor Score 5 — Flute (Piccolo) 5 — 2nd Flute 1 — 1st Oboe 1 — 2nd Oboe 1 — 1st Bassoon 1 — 2nd Bassoon 4 — 1st B Clarinet 4 — 2nd B Clarinet 4 — 3rd B Clarinet 1 — E Alto Clarinet 1 — E Contrabass Clarinet 2 — B Bass Clarinet (BB Contrabass Clarinet) 2 — 1st E Alto Saxophone 2 — 2nd E Alto Saxophone 2 — B Tenor Saxophone 1 — E Baritone Saxophone 2 — 1st F Horn 2 — 2nd F Horn 3 — 1st B Cornet 3 — 2nd B Cornet 3 — 3rd B Cornet 2 — 1st Trombone 2 — 2nd Trombone 2 — 3rd Trombone 2 — Baritone T.C. 2 — Baritone B.C. 4 — Tuba 2 — Mallets (Bells, Chimes, Vibes, Xylophone) 2 — Percussion 1 (Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Crash Cymbals) 2 — Percussion 2 (Triangle, Tam-Tam, Sus. VARIANTS ON A NAUTICAL

HYMN

This work is written for and dedicated to the Kamiakin High School Wind Ensemble, Kennewick, Washington, which is directed by John Owen. It is based on the Naval Hymn, Eternal Father, Strong to Save. After a dramatic fanfare

introduction (horns should play aggressively), the hymn is stated in a choral fashion.
