January 5, 2013Hello Again,For a couple of years or more, my wife has been trying to encourage me to read “The Best of
James Herriot – Favorite Memories of a Country Vet.” So earlier this evening with one eye on the
television, I read the first 30 pages of his memories. While I enjoyed learning about Dr. James
Herriot and his early days in the practice of veterinary medicine in the hill country of England, my
mind kept wandering back to a few evenings I traveled with a well-known Fort Plain veterinarian as
he visited dairy farms around Canajoharie, Palatine Bridge, Caroga Lake, Johnstown and St.
Johnsville.
At the time of our first trip together, I knew very little about the good doctor, his practice, or
education. With the publishing business, I owned a dairy farm on Cunningham Road just east of
Canajoharie.
As we traveled along in his vet vehicle, we chatted about a little of this and that. I was
beginning to think he was quite possibly a sort of egghead until I asked him where we were going.
He answered, “Out near Ames. The farmer has a cow with a severe case of hollow horn.” While he
didn’t seem like the type to be pulling my leg, I asked him what the cure for hollow horn was and
without any indication of humor, he said, “I’m not usually sure until I see the horn,” or something
like that. Now that several years have passed since Doc retired from his own practice, I wonder
how many cases of hollow horn he cured, especially in a herd of polled Herefords. (They are
hornless by nature and horned cattle already have hollow horns.) Pastor Dan West reminded me
that polled Herefords without any legs are called ground beef.
I imagine you are starting to question my choice of friends. Possibly I never chose, just got
stuck with them, or the reverse is true.
Until I met and traveled with Doc, I possibly thought that veterinarians had a relatively easy
way of life. That was before I learned that nearly every night, regardless of road, time, or
weather conditions, when a farmer phoned with a cow down sick with milk fever or a horse hardly
able to breath, Doc was expected to be at the farm without excuse. I imagine he could put off a
case of hollow horn for a day or two. I later learned this soft-spoken country humorist
graduated from Cornell University and was a teaching professor at Purdue.
Before setting this chatter into type, I asked a St. Johnsville retired attorney if I could be held
liable for including this in Hello Again and he answered, “Only if you get caught.” Do you need new
friends? I’ve got three I will loan to you: a pastor, a doctor, and an attorney. In fact, this
Christmas season I will give them to you.
While reading one of James Herriot’s novels, I ran across the word “somnambulistic” and
wondered why anyone in his right mind would concoct and use such a word. I’m sure that a great
orator and wordsmith such as Winston Churchill would never have repeated it in public, less he be
accused of blowing off steam. According to Mr. Webster, it means sleepwalking. After using the
word sleepwalking to refer to sleepwalking, do you feel like an ignoramus because you didn’t say
somnambulistic? To me it does sound like some – bull. Now I’m sure we both have found a word we
will never use.
This little chatter seems to point out one of the major faults in our so-called higher education.
We are forced to learn so much that we will never use and skip so much of what we do need to
know. Do you know how to read your electric meter and figure your light bill? How to convert square
feet into square yards so you can know the cost of carpet at $15 per square yard? Or who has
the right of way on a New York State highway – you with your car or a farmer with a horse and
buggy? It might pay to find out. Is it correct to refer to yourself as “I” or “me”? Now as far as me
thinks, it is confusing to know whether I am me or I. If in doubt, call me Fred – it’s worked for the

last 77 years.
Over in the hill country there was an ant that worked hard all day in the fields. It was summer
and the ant was busy cutting grass and dragging it home. The ant had a grasshopper for a
neighbor. The grasshopper lived on welfare and sat in his doorway singing all day. When winter
came, the ant had a whole bale of grass.
But the ant had violated the Federal Farm Law for over-harvesting grass. He was fined
$162.50 and the surplus was seized. The grasshopper received the surplus in exchange for his
food stamps. If the ant failed to report his hard work gain, they could and would put him – after
financially destroying him – in the pokey pokey.
The ant was classified as self-employed so he had to pay New York and federal income taxes
along with social security, unemployment insurance, and disability payments – keep books – fill
in and submit reports to New York State, Uncle Sam, have his hard work place examined by
government employed ants, and stand prepared to pay fines and penalties with additional
interest if he failed in any payment or filing.
I can hear old Abe saying, “Shiver my timbers – I thought I did away with slavery.”
Well Christmas and New Year’s Eve have come and gone. So has the 365 days and nights of
the year 2012.
Around the 20th of December I noticed Santa’s big red cattle truck was no longer seen in the
area. Also, I was told Santa, in an attempt to become more fashionable, had his whiskers
trimmed.
Early this morning when I took our dog Toby out for his walk, I noticed strange hoof prints in
the driveway snow but the snow at the bottom of the garage overhead door had not been
disturbed. I opened the overhead door and found my three-wheeled Spyder motorcycle was
sitting there all shined up in its regular stall. While I am pleased that my red Spyder was able to
help Santa – how did he return it to its regular garage space without disturbing the snow?
This week I will have to keep my eye open for Santa’s red cattle truck. Maybe he will take off a
few deserved weeks and head south. I’m glad he didn’t take my red Spyder roadster with him.
I was going to ask my wife what she thought about all of this. I feel reasonably sure she would
accuse me of becoming a little somnambulistic or a candidate for Santa to give me a ride in his
bright red cattle truck up to the funny farm.
My St. Johnsville fellow goose-watcher asked if I noticed that nearly all of the geese were gone.
Now I wonder where did all of those huge gaggles of geese go.
Until next time, enjoy this beautiful snow-covered winter wonderland.
Say or wave hello to your neighbors and thank God for all of his
blessings we receive.
Remember God created the Heavens and Earth, then he created us in
his own image so we could enjoy his handy work.

There have been various calls to prayer and fasting in our Americanhistory. Denominations and even presidents have asked for these special
days of focus and reflection. Our local pastors gathering has been made aware ofother pastors groups considering this and feel it is a good thing and worthy of ourtime and effort.
A group of like-minded pastors from a variety of churches in the Communion Valleyare calling any and all Bible-believing Christians to spend the first Monday of January2013 as a day to urgently seek our God through fasting and prayer. We recommendpraying for a true revival in the hearts of all Christians and a return to Kingdom livingin our churches. We also recommend lifting up the ministry of the gospel aroundthe world, for our Lord to push forward laborers into the harvest, and for divineprotection for all believers who are suffering persecution for the faith in our Lord Jesus.
We’re going to continue this day of prayer and fasting throughout the year of 2013.The first Monday of every month is the designated day. There will be areas of focusposted every month on Facebook, communionvalley.com, and through the pastorsinvolved. It is our hope that we can bind our hearts together with holy resolve andthat we can affect good change in our communities and around the world throughour efforts.
Blessings & Peace, Mike Yezierski, [email protected]

Pellets should bemade of pure woodwith no additives. Nobinder is needed asnaturally occurringlignin in the woodmelts and then hard-ens when it cools. Onecommon myth is thathard wood pellets willhave more Btu’s thansoft wood. Once woodis densified, it will all
have the same Btucontent. The quality ofpellets can vary signif-icantly and once youfind a good brand thatworks well in yourstove, stick with it.Often people think thestove is not workingproperly when in factthey are using a sub-standard pellet. Woodpellets are cylindrical
in shape and measureup to 1.5 inches (38millimeters) in lengthand 5/16 of an inch (8millimeters) in diame-ter. Most pellets have5-10 percent moisturecontent and a heatingvalue of approximately8,250 Btu/pound.
Pellets can be pur-chased at hearth spe-cialty stores, home
improvement stores, feed stores or online. Most pellet stoves aredesigned to burn woodpellets, which are nor-mally manufacturedfrom sawdust orwoodchips.

Airbags wereinvented in the early1950s by John W.Hetrick, an indus-trial engineer andmember of the U.S.Navy.
It wasn’t untilroughly 20 yearslater that airbagsbegan being used in
m a s s - p r o d u c e dautos.
Nowadays, air-bags have becomean instrumentalpart of a vehicle’ssafety system, offer-ing extra protectionin crashes.
Each year, thou-sands of lives are
saved thanks inpart to airbags.
However, airbagsare not withoutsome measure ofdanger.
It is estimatedthat airbags deployat between 100 to300 mph and inmere milliseconds.
The force of theairbag can causeinjuries to the faceand head.
But such injuriespale in comparisonto those the airbagsprotect drivers andpassengers against.

(StatePoint) — If eatinghealthier and gettingmore exercise tops yourNew Year’s resolution list, consider extending theseworthwhile goals to thewhole family.
According to the Cen-ters for Disease Controland Prevention, child-hood obesity in thiscountry has more thantripled over the past 30years. But you can helpyour family get the rightnutrition and exercise tostay healthy.
“Not only is it extremelyimportant for kids to getall the vitamins, nutri-ents and physical activitythey need to stay healthy, but habits formed earlyin life — both good andbad — can last a life-time,” says Dr. ThomasMcInerny, president ofthe American Academy ofPediatrics (AAP).
The AAP is offeringsome healthy living tipsfor parents to help kidsget on the right track forthe upcoming year.Improving eating habits
• You may have badchildhood memories ofbeing forced to sit at thetable until you cleanedyour plate. Don’t perpetu-ate this method of meal-time management! It
sends the wrong messageby emphasizing quantityover quality and can leadto significant overeating.Foster a healthier atti-tude toward food by fo-cusing on what you servein the first place.
• Establish a routinewith regular meal andsnack times. Always eatmeals at the table. Chil-dren who eat meals withtheir family consumemore fruits, vegetables, fiber, calcium-rich foodsand vitamins.
• Once kids are oldenough, encourage self-feeding as much as possi-ble.
• Avoid soda, which isfull of empty calories orartificial sweeteners. Milkand water are the bestdrink choices for yourchild. Offer whole milk or2 percent milk to childrenages 12 months to 2years old, unless your pe-diatrician recommendslow-fat milk. After age 2,offer low-fat milk. Limitjuice to four to six ouncesa day.
• Kids can be picky atfirst, but don’t let a re-fusal of a new food stopyou from trying again. Of-fer new foods multipletimes in multiple ways. For infants, you may
need to even try 10 to 15times over severalmonths. Parents are ex-tremely influential andcan serve as a child’s bestrole model. Eat a varietyof foods of different fla-vors, colors and textures.Encourage active play• Don’t let a full day go
by without active play.Take trips to the park,
play in the yard, go forwalks and make physicalactivity a part of yourfamily’s daily routine. Re-duce the amount of timespent in devices that re-strain movement, such asstrollers and bouncyseats.
• Limit screen time, in-cluding TV, video gamesand computers, to less
than two hours a day.Avoid placing computersor television sets in chil-dren’s bedrooms so theycan get the best sleeppossible.
• Encourage your kidsto take part in sportsteams, gymnastic anddance classes, and otheractivities that will getthem moving.

Healthy New Year’s resolution ideas for kids
by Samantha MazzottaCleaning up after the
holidaysHappy New Year! While
the holidays might notquite be over, planningfor post-holiday cleanupcan help combat the win-ter blues and keep youfrom being that onehouse on the block thathas a holiday wreathhanging on the door untilJuly.
Here are a few tips thatmight help holidaycleanup go a little easier:
• If you have a real tree, check with your local gov-
ernment to find out if andwhen there is tree pickupand disposal in yourarea. Otherwise, look fora tree disposal servicenearby. Remove and packaway all the tree orna-ments and decorations. The night before sched-uled disposal or pickup, prep the tree. If the dis-posal service wants it in atree bag, put the bag overthe tree and cover thetree fully while it’s still inits stand. With a helperholding the tree in place, loosen the trunk from thestand and carefully lift
away. Drain excess waterfrom the stand into asink, dry and store fornext year.
• When removing thetree from the stand, don’tset the trunk down on thecarpet or floor, as sap willcreate a sticky mess.Don’t use the tree as fire-wood: It’s not seasonedand the branches mayhave been pre-treated atthe tree lot with chemi-cals to prevent insects.
• Use a shop vac to vac-uum up pine needles, tin-sel and other small debrisfrom where the tree oncesat.
• Put used wrappingpaper into the recyclingbin -- don’t burn it in thefireplace.
• Tree sap on tile orwood floors, or on protec-tive cloths, can becleaned with warm waterand soap. Sap on the car-pet should be dabbedwith a cloth dampenedwith rubbing alcohol un-til the sap comes up.
• Take down outdoorChristmas lights and dec-orations in clear weather.Work with a partner anduse a sturdy ladder for
lights on the roof eaves. Some DIYers replaceburnt bulbs when theytake down the lights, butI usually don’t, as I oftenhave to replace burned orbroken bulbs next holi-day season anyway. Wrapthe strands around a
piece of cardboard tokeep them from tangling, and store in a dry, coolplace until next year.
HOME TIP: “To cleanup tinsel stuck in the car-pet, I put my grandkids towork by having them puton thick socks, stick fold-
ed-over duct tape allalong the bottoms, andscoot around the floor! Itworks great! — Mary B.,Watertown, MA

(StatePoint) — Thereare many popular NewYear’s resolutions thatquickly come and go: eat-ing healthy, losingweight, managing stressand saving money. In2013, why not focus onone health change you’llenjoy sticking to... gettingmore sleep.
According to the Na-tional Sleep Foundation, the average Americansleeps about six hoursand 55 minutes per nightduring the week, and 15percent of adults sleepless than six hours pernight.
“Lack of sleep can takea significant toll on youroverall health and inter-fere with some of yourdaily activities,” said Dr.Michael Thorpy, directorof the Sleep-Wake Disor-ders Center at the Monte-fiore Medical Center inNew York.
Almost everybody hastrouble sleeping now andthen, but many Ameri-cans experience signifi-cant problems getting tosleep or continually wakeup in the middle of thenight and can’t fall back
asleep.Such problems may be
clinical symptoms of in-somnia. According to theNational Sleep Founda-tion, if you have troublefalling asleep at night orstaying asleep, or youwake up in the morningfeeling unrefreshed, youmay be suffering from in-somnia.
Insomnia can affectpeople in different ways. Some sufferers havetrouble initially getting tosleep, while others wakeup in the middle of thenight and have difficultyfalling back asleep.
To help you get bettersleep this year, Dr. Thor-py suggests these simpletips:
• Set and stick to asleep schedule. Establisha regular bedtime andwake time.
• Set aside time atnight to “wind down.”Spend some quiet timebefore bedtime. Such ac-tivities as watching TV,using the computer orworking right before bed-time, or in the bedroom, can make it harder to fallasleep.
• Avoid caffeine and al-cohol before bed.
• Exercise regularly.Just don’t exercise rigor-
ously near bedtime andcheck with your doctorbefore starting an exer-cise regimen.
• Don’t clock-watch. Ifyou awaken in the middleof the night and stay inbed, don’t lie there star-
ing at the clock. Anddon’t watch TV or useyour laptop or cell phone, because these technolo-
gies stimulate the brain, making it tougher to fallback to sleep.
If these tips don’t help,
speak with your health-care professional to helpdetermine if you are suf-fering from insomnia and
require treatment.More information re-
garding insomnia is avail-able at the National Sleep
Foundation website atwww.sleepfoundation.org.
This new year, resolve to get more sleep
by David UffingtonHow to deal quicklywith holiday debt
Did you overspend dur-ing the holidays? Haveyou loaded up your creditcards with debt? It’s easyto do. Retailers go all outto get consumers to let goof cash, and there’s thenot-so-small desire toprovide a happy seasonfor loved ones.
Now, however, it’s timeto take a hard look at thedebt that’s been incurred.
When the bills arrive inJanuary, open them im-mediately. Make a chartshowing the total balanceand the minimummonthly payment foreach. Decide how muchyou can pay monthly oneach one until all the bal-ances are brought to
zero. At the very least, pay a few dollars morethan the minimum, asthis is something thatgoes on your credit re-port.
Check the interestrates and put extra mon-ey into the payments forthose cards with higherrates. Ideally, you shouldbe able to pay off all yourholiday debt in three pay-ments, if not sooner. Ifyou can’t, add extra mon-ey to those payments tothe extent you reasonablycan. As you pay off onecard, use that paymentamount to put extra onanother card paymenteach month.
Here’s what happens ifyou let the debts lingerand only make minimumpayments:
You’ll keep paying moreinterest. A sale item is nolonger a sale item onceyou add months of inter-est to its cost.
Your buying power isdiminished. You’re payingtoday with money youhaven’t earned yet.
Your borrowing poweris reduced. In the event ofan emergency where youmust take out a loan, youmight be limited in howmuch you can borrow be-cause of the debt you’vealready taken on.
Your credit score cantake a hit if you’ve put toomuch on your creditcards. Going over a cer-tain percentage of totalcredit availability showsup as a negative in yourscore, and it will continuethat way until you payenough of the balance. Ifthe excess debt leads tolate payments or payingonly minimum payments, your credit score will suf-fer.
Debt hangs over yourhead, day after day. Itdoesn’t go away — untilyou pay it off.
If you received cash forholiday gifts, consider us-ing that to bring downsome of your debt.

Please remember to wear your snowmobile helmet, stay on the trail, don’t drinkand drive, and have a good time.
Trails open after big game season ends in each zone, and the ground is snow cov-ered. Privately owned land may have further restrictions, check with the local club,or posted signs, for more information.
Any snowmobile operated in New York State must be registered with the NewYork State Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV), even if it is registered in anotherstate or province, except under certain special circumstances. For more informa-tion about snowmobile registration, please contact the DMV. A portion of each reg-istration goes to the Snowmobile Trail Development and Maintenance Fund. Thisfund supports over 10,000 miles of public snowmobile trails in New York State, snowmobile safety education programs and enforcement of NYS snowmobile laws.
Snowmobilers must carry registration and proof of insurance documents on theirperson, not the snowmobile, at all times while snowmobiling. These documentsmust be produced at the request of any law enforcement officer or magistrate. In-surance documentation must be produced at the request of anyone who is injuredor suffers property damage as a result of operation of a snowmobile. Holders ofsnowmobile safety certificates must carry the certificate when they are snowmobil-ing.
For more information about snowmobile requirements and snowmobile safety, please call the Office of Parks, Recreation & Historical Preservation at 518-474-0446.

Heat your home safelyIf you plan to use a
wood stove, fireplace, orspace heater, be extreme-ly careful. Follow themanufacturer’s instruc-tions and rememberthese safety tips:
• Use fireplace, woodstoves, or other combus-tion heaters only if theyare properly vented to theoutside and do not leakflue gas into the indoorair space.
• Do not burn paper ina fireplace.
• Ensure adequate ven-tilation if you must use akerosene heater.
• Use only the type offuel your heater is de-signed to use — don’tsubstitute.
• Do not place a spaceheater within 3 feet ofanything that may catchon fire, such as drapes, furniture, or bedding, and never cover yourspace heater.
• Never place a spaceheater on top of furnitureor near water.
• Never leave childrenunattended near a spaceheater.
• Make sure that thecord of an electric spaceheater is not a trippinghazard but do not run thecord under carpets or rugs.
• Avoid using extensioncords to plug in yourspace heater.
• If your space heaterhas a damaged electricalcord or produces sparks,do not use it.
• Store a multipurpose,dry-chemical fire extin-guisher near the area tobe heated.
• Protect yourself fromcarbon monoxide (CO)poisoning by installing abattery-operated CO de-tector and never usinggenerators, grills, campstoves, or similar devicesindoors.
Cook safely• Never use a charcoal
or gas grill indoors — thefumes are deadly.
• Never use an electricgenerator indoors, insidethe garage, or near the air
intake of your house be-cause of the risk of car-bon monoxide poisoning.
• Plug in appliances tothe generator using indi-vidual heavy-duty, out-door-rated cords.
• Do not use the gener-ator or appliances if theyare wet because of therisk of electrocution.
• Do not store gasolineindoors where the fumescould ignite.Light your home safely
If there is a power fail-ure:
• Use battery-poweredflashlights or lanternsrather than candles, ifpossible.
• Never leave lit candlesunattended.
Conserve heatYou may need fresh air
coming in for your heateror for emergency cookingarrangements. However,if you don’t need extraventilation, keep as muchheat as possible insideyour home. Avoid unnec-essary opening of doorsor windows. Close off un-
needed rooms, stuff tow-els or rags in cracks un-der doors, and closedraperies or cover win-dows with blankets atnight.Monitor body tempera-
tureInfants less than one
year old should neversleep in a cold room be-cause (1) infants losebody heat more easilythan adults; and (2) un-like adults, infants can’tmake enough body heatby shivering. Providewarm clothing for infantsand try to maintain awarm indoor tempera-ture. If the temperaturecannot be maintained, make temporary arrange-ments to stay elsewhere. In an emergency, you cankeep an infant warm us-ing your own body heat. Ifyou must sleep, take pre-cautions to preventrolling on the baby. Pil-lows and other soft bed-ding can also present arisk of smothering; re-move them from the area
near the baby.Older adults often make
less body heat because ofa slower metabolism andless physical activity. Ifyou are over 65 years ofage, check the tempera-ture in your home oftenduring severely coldweather. Also, check onelderly friends and neigh-bors frequently to ensurethat their homes are ade-quately heated.
Keep a water supplyExtreme cold can cause
water pipes in your hometo freeze and sometimesrupture. When very coldtemperatures are expected:
• Leave all water tapsslightly open so they dripcontinuously.
• Keep the indoor tem-perature warm.
• Improve the circula-tion of heated air nearpipes. For example, openkitchen cabinet doors be-neath the kitchen sink.
If your pipes do freeze,do not thaw them with atorch. Instead, thaw themslowly by directing the
warm air from an electrichair dryer onto the pipes.
If you cannot thaw yourpipes, or the pipes areruptured, use bottled wa-ter or get water from aneighbor’s home. As anemergency measure — ifno other water is avail-able — snow can be melt-ed for water. Bringing wa-ter to a rolling boil for oneminute will kill most mi-croorganisms or para-sites that may be present, but won’t remove chemi-cal pollutants sometimesfound in snow.
Eat and drink wiselyEating well-balanced
meals will help you staywarmer. Do not drink al-coholic or caffeinatedbeverages — they causeyour body to lose heatmore rapidly. Instead, drink warm, sweet bever-ages or broth to helpmaintain your body tem-perature. If you have anydietary restrictions, askyour doctor.

Winter weather: indoor safety
Trees can be damaged by high winds, snow, iceand/or other severe weather. Some damage will re-quire immediate attention while others may be dealtwith at a later time.
Safety is a primary concern when working with trees.Any work that requires a chain saw or cannot be per-formed from the ground should be done by a profes-sional tree-care service or arborist. One or both shouldbe consulted when assessing trees for possible removal.
InsuranceIn all but life threatening situations, you may want
to consider contacting your insurance carrier beforeany tree work is performed. Most homeowners’ poli-cies will cover at least part of the cost of tree removalif some structural damage has occurred.
Be conservativeMany communities across the country have either
had damage to, or have lost trees, because of major iceand/or snow storms, or other natural causes in recentyears. Decisions made soon after the damage occurscan, and will, determine whether or not a damagedtree survives.
Do not prune or remove more than necessary rightafter an occurence. Remove any hazards, and clean uproughly broken branches, but save major decisions onpruning and removals for later. While the damage maylook severe at first, concentrate more on how to savethe tree rather than making a quick decision to cut itdown. Damaged trees may still be able to serve thefunction for which they were planted. Don’t be toohasty to remove a tree if that decision can be delayeduntil spring or even for a year. The tree may not havebeen damaged as badly as first believed. On the otherhand, a major injury may reduce the useful life of thetree. Severe or large wounds can produce an entrypoint for decay, fungi or insects.
If a tree is injured so badly that it must be removed, consider replacing it. Before planting a new tree, makesure the replacement tree is the proper species andsize for the site. Contact your local DEC office, or treenursery for advice on tree selection and planting.
Hazardous treesHanging or loosely attached branches and split
trunks are obvious safety concerns. They should bedealt with as soon as possible to avoid the possibilityof personal injury and/or property damage. Brokenbut firmly attached branches that pose no immediate
danger of falling can be pruned after the more haz-ardous branches have been removed. Trunks that aresplit down the middle are very difficult to brace ade-quately, and should be removed or addressed by aprofessional tree-care service or arborist.
Leaning treesSome storms may not break the above ground por-
tion of the tree but instead might tip the tree over bybreaking some of the roots. Trees leaning from rootbreakage usually do not survive for long. If a tree tipsin a storm, it often means the tree had damaged orpoorly developed roots prior to falling or leaning over.Larger, more mature trees rarely survive attempts topull them back into place. These generally should beremoved and replaced. Smaller and more recentlyplanted trees have a better chance of surviving if the
trees are gently pulled back to their vertical positions.Soil needs to be packed firmly around the root systemand watered well. Trees should be staked until theroots have become established again.
Power linesBranches hanging over power lines are a major safe-
ty hazard from the standpoint of both the person re-moving the branches, as well as any passers-by. Spe-cial training is required to safely prune these branch-es. Homeowners should not attempt to prune branch-es near, or laying on, power lines. Contact your localpower company or a professional tree-care servicetrained in electrical line clearance to have thesebranches removed.

Care and pruning of damaged trees
by David UffingtonUse gift cards before
they’re worthlessDid you get gift cards
for Christmas? If so, didyou slide them into yourwallet or the bottom ofyour purse, thinking tosave them for later?
While gift cards are likecash in that they allowyou to buy things, they’renot like cash in that theyoften come with restric-tions. The Gift Card Fed-eral Law Act, passed in2010, covered a numberof problems with giftcards, but it did not coverall possible contingencies.
For example, if a cardhasn’t been used with ayear, unlimited chargescan be deducted from thecard. An average fee is $3per month.
In at least two states,Tennessee and Maine,
state laws are in conflictwith federal laws. In thesestates, cards that haven’tbeen used within twoyears are considered “un-claimed property.” Insome other states, it’sthree years. In yet otherstates, it’s against the lawto sell gift cards with anyexpiration date. When theproperty is “unclaimed,”the value reverts to thestore. If you have an old, unused card, consult yourstate’s laws for specifics.
Cards good for brick-and-mortar stores aren’tnecessarily good for thatstore’s online branch.
If you received an “allpurpose” card issued by abank, as opposed to onethat is specific to a store, you might be charged apurchase fee.
If you have a store-spe-cific card and the busi-
ness goes bankrupt, you’re out of luck.
The card itself can ex-pire even if it still has acash amount available onit. You might have to payto have the card replaced.
“Gift cards” that reallyaren’t gift cards aren’tprotected under the newrules. These can includeloyalty or promotionalcards that aren’t labeledor sold as gift cards.
On the positive side:Any expiration date
must show on the card orpackage.
Charges cannot be de-ducted for one year onany inactive card, andthen not more than oncein a month.
Your best bet: If anypackaging came withyour gift card, read thefine print.
If you were given the re-
ceipt with the card, holdon to it. If you lose thecard, that receipt willshow the date andamount of purchase.
Use the card soon.Spend all of the money onit. If it’s a reloadable cardand you add money to it,keep track of the transac-tion and know when itwill expire.

(NAPSA) — Cold weath-er affects a car’s batterymore than any other en-gine component. Filledwith fluid containing
mostly water, batteriesare susceptible to freez-ing.
Additionally, coldweather thickens engineoil, forcing the battery towork harder when start-ing the car. A vehicle’sbattery loses 33 percentof its power when thetemperature dips belowfreezing and more than50 percent of its powerwhen the temperaturefalls below zero.
Plus, the more electri-cal devices in the car-such as electronic fuel in-
jection systems, electricwindows, sunroofs andaudio systems — themore power the batteryshould have. If the car is
exposed to extreme cold, the best guaranteeagainst failure is a bat-tery with a high level ofcold cranking amps, atleast 550, depending onthe type of engine in yourvehicle.
“Motorists should havetheir battery checkedwhen they learn of an in-coming wave of coldweather,” Interstate Bat-teries Technical ServicesManager Gale Kimbroughsaid. “A fully charged bat-tery is the best defenseagainst cold weather and
vehicle nonstarts. In coldweather, engines requiremore cranking amps andbatteries are less effi-cient, reducing their
charge acceptance andability to start an engine.”
To help, the experts atInterstate Batteries rec-ommend the following:
• Have the vehicle’sstarting and chargingsystem tested every threemonths or every oil
change.• Use a battery charger
to maintain charge levelsand keep the battery ingood condition. If the bat-
tery is more than threeyears old, have it testedto ensure it can survivethe coldest wintermonths.
• Have the battery test-ed before taking a longtrip or after it has beenrecharged.
• Inspect the batterycables, posts and fasten-ers. Make sure the cablesare in good shape and aresecured firmly to the bat-tery.
• Clean the battery ter-minals with a wire brushor battery cleaner spray.
• Choose the appropri-ate battery for the vehi-cle. It should be the cor-rect size and voltage, es-pecially for a vehicle thatexperiences extremelyharsh winter conditions.
• When possible, keepthe vehicle in a garageovernight, especially inareas with extremelyharsh winter conditions.
• Avoid damage to thebattery and keep connec-tions from loosening witha snug-fitting battery inthe battery tray.
