Veterans Day: the PoppyDid you ever wonder why the VFW passes
out poppies on Memorial Day and Veterans
Day? It is in representation of a popular war
poem called “In Flanders Fields,” which was
written by a soldier during WWI.
Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae was a
Canadian physician. He was inspired to
write the poem on May 3, 1915, after presid-
ing over the funeral of friend and fellow sol-
dier Alexis Helmer, who died in the Second
Battle of Ypres. At the time of the funeral,
McCrae noted how poppies quickly grew
around the graves of those who died at
Ypres. He composed the poem the following
day while sitting in the back of an ambu-
lance.
“In Flanders Fields” was first published on
Dec. 8 of that year in the London-based mag-
azine Punch, after being rejected by other
magazines.
According to legend, fellow soldiers
retrieved the poem after McCrae, initially
unsatisfied with his work, discarded it.
On Jan. 28, 1918, while commanding No.
3 Canadian General Hospital (McGill) at
Boulogne, France, McCrae died of pneumo-
nia with "extensive pneumococcus
meningitis." This was 10 months before the
war ended, on Nov 11 (Veteran’s Day), 1918.
In Flanders FieldsIn Flanders fields the poppies blow
Between the crosses, row on row,That mark our place; and in the skyThe larks, still bravely singing, fly
Scarce heard amid the guns below.
We are the Dead. Short days agoWe lived, felt dawn, saw sunset glow,
Loved and were loved, and now we lieIn Flanders fields.
Take up our quarrel with the foe:To you from failing hands we throw
The torch; be yours to hold it high.If ye break faith with us who die
We shall not sleep, though poppies growIn Flanders fields.

Hello Again,November 10, 2012
In this day of being politically correct, I wonder if it is acceptable to have memories of events in
your life when a situation was – by today’s standards – not politically correct.
When I was a young lad living in our tiny village, Halloween always brought out the terrible
goblins in all of us.
Farmers hay wagons loaded with whatevers were drawn into the village and parked up against
Charlie Hearn’s store. Outhouses, including the boys and girls behind the schoolhouse, were tipped
over and shoved down the bank into the Cherry Valley Creek.
Windows of cars, homes, and the country general stores were always soaped – which brings up
the point of this line of chatter. We had a lady whom I will not name, to be politically
correct, who whole-heartedly joined in the holidays nonsense and merry making such as turning
cows and horses loose, setting harmless bonfires in the middle of a street and naturally soaping
the higher windows as she was not only very large, but also very tall. She could reach windows that
we kids couldn’t.
About 8:30 Halloween night, dressed in a spooky burlap costume, carrying a straw broom, she
came bursting into the lower grocery store with large tears streaming down her cheeks, while half-
screaming like an Irish banshee. The storeowner – my cousin Norm – in as much of a sympathet-
ic tone as he could muster asked, “What’s wrong? Are you hurt?” She answered, “I was over to
Barney’s bent over soaping his windows and he snuck up behind me and kicked me right in my rear.”
With that, cousin Norm laughed and said, “How could he miss?”
That was back during the World War II years when everyone was talking about the terrible war-
mongers – the Krauts (Germans) and Japs (Japanese). Now even mentioning the size of the lady
soaper or the Krauts and Japs would certainly not be politically correct but I have to admit, it’s
the kind of stuff memories are made of. As a kid, did you ever take a hunk of Ivory and soap a few
windows?
I would not recommend you do it now-a-days. Our politically correct society would not find any
humor in your act but would call in the local bulls (not politically correct) and have you arrested.
Oops, there I go again.
Isn’t it rather strange or do you suppose some humorist or comedian chose to have Halloween,
the evening of October 31st, followed by All Saints Day and Election Day at the same time of year?
Do you suppose the good Lord, knowing there are no real Halloween characters, sees the humor in
piggy-backing election time along with spooks, ghosts, and goblins?
Where is Dr. Louis Jones of Cooperstown, author of “Things Go Bump in the Night” when we need
him?
Realizing I’m just a country boy who missed kindergarten and Harvard, but a lot of my friends
remember me in grade, high school, and even college – but not kindergarten, our country school
board hadn’t figured that one out yet so our Mom’s continued to be our unpaid baby-sitters.
Another four years have come and gone and the citizens of the greatest nation on the face of
this God-created globe have chosen to keep Barack Obama as President for the next four years.
While some did not vote for him, the election is over and 100% of all of our citizens should try to
Original Valley PENNYSAVER • November 10, 2012 Page 7
support him. Naturally support can only come honestly if we believe in what he is attempting to
accomplish. I’m a firm believer in praying for our leaders, especially our president.
Remember during President Clinton’s second term, he moved from the far left towards the cen-
ter? It is quite possible that during the near future, we will have to tighten our belts. This com-
ing week could be the correct time to start a New Year’s resolution or resolutions.
Just to mention a few: turn your home thermostat down and wear warmer clothes. Drive no
faster than 55 mph. We do not always have to step on the gas and pass that slower driver up
ahead. Look for bargains and use coupons at the grocery store. If your habit has been to drive
twenty to thirty miles to go shopping, try shopping at a local store. Most cars will burn a gallon
of gas for every twenty miles traveled. A thirty mile trip is actually sixty miles and could cost
you three gallons of gas at $4 per gallon. You will save $12.
It’s time to put the preaching soapbox away and enjoy a chuckle or two.
Little Charlie wanted $100 so badly that he decided to write a letter to God. The post office
forwarded the letter to the president. The president, while amused, ordered $5 be sent to the
boy. When the boy opened the letter and found $5, not $100, he wrote another letter to God and
said, “Thank you, but your letter passed through Washington and they took 95 percent.”
We have to realize that President Obama is now faced with a similar problem as the one George
Washington faced. He can no longer blame everything on the previous president.
God bless you, our friends, President Obama and Mr. Romney.
If you see something red chugging by, it won’t be me. It’s too cold. But wave anyway –
somehow I’ll get the message.
A farmer who had driven his mules to town one morning arrived back home three hours late.
His wife asked why it took so long. He said, “You won’t believe it but I picked up the president, and
from then on, them mules did not obey or understand a word that was said.”
We just received a phone call from a friend who lives down near New York City. Their electricity
was just turned on and now they have a foot of snow. I know he didn’t blame their troubles on
Bush and certainly can’t blame Romney. If he wants to remain politically correct – what can he
do? Certainly blaming the good Lord might not be the smart thing to do, or even politically cor-
rect.
A personal note to all of our friends and readers: Since my wife’s open-heart surgery last week,
Sylvia has received a fantastic pile of cards, letters, and phone calls. Everyone mentioned their
prayers for which we are grateful. Prayer does work.
To those ladies who cooked, prepared, and delivered those super-suppers, I think I feel a case
of the hee-bee-geebies coming on and we’ve eaten all the food you so graciously delivered . . . so
far.
Sylvia is gaining every day and sends her prayers and thanks. The surgery was a complete suc-
cess. We give thanks to our Lord along with the surgeon, cardiologist, anesthesiologist, nurses
and technicians, and for our praying friends.

by Elizabeth A. Tomlin“When they called,
we didn’t think twice,”
remarked St.
Johnsville’s Morris J.
Edwards American
Legion Post 168 past
Commander Pete
Manikas. “We just did
our duty.”
Manikas, a Veteran
of the Korean War,
was referring to the
call to serve our coun-
try, the great United
States of America.
Bob Loccia, also a
past Commander of
the Post, is a Veteran
of four different wars.
Loccia agrees with
Manikas. “It’s an
honor to be a
Veteran,” he said.
Alan “Charlie”
Weaver, 3rd Vice
Commander of the
Post, reports that
Loccia has not missed
marching in a single
parade with the
Legion since 1968.
“Loccia spent 6
years in active duty as
a Marine and then
was with the Army
National Guard for
another 25 years,”
stated Weaver. “He is
really one of our
notable Veterans!”
Immediate past
Commander and
Chaplain, Alan Littrell
remarked, “The free-
dom we have today is
because of guys like
me.”
“I served my country
and I’m proud of it!”
attested current
Commander Tony
Susi.
The Veterans made
these comments while
meeting at the St.
Johnsville’s Soldiers &
Sailors Memorial Park
along with a group of
other Post 168 legion-
naires to salute the
American flag in
honor of this year’s
Veterans Day.
Susi remarked that
the Post would be pre-
senting their annual
Veterans Day program
at the St. Johnsville
Nursing Home and
Rehabilitation Center
on Sunday, at 11
a.m., where miniature
flags will be handed
out to everyone who
attends.
This event will be
followed up by anoth-
er, region-wide, pro-
gram that will be held
Sunday afternoon at
the Holy Family
Catholic Parish on
East Main St. in Little
Falls at 3 p.m., hon-
oring our Veterans.
This special event will
feature a military cer-
emony with patriotic
music, followed by a
free luncheon. Call
315-823-3410 for
more information.

These saw sets come to us
from an entrepeneuring local.
Abel Stillman of Poland, NY
patented them on Sept. 26,
1848.
The “set” of a saw refers to
the angle each tooth is bent
away from the saw plate.
This is a complex process of
measuring multiple angles
because the blade cannot be a
constant thickness through-
out, otherwise the saw will
bind. The amount of set
applied to the blade is meas-
ured with a micrometer.
Once measurements aretaken, saw sets are used to
pinch and bend each tooth in
order to properly align them.
The person setting must also
make sure not to set the teeth
too far the opposite direction.
Stillman’s saw sets were nei-
ther the first nor last versions
of this tool to be made. The
additions he made are spelled
out in the patent: “The revolv-
ing jaw having at the ends of
its arms depressions of differ-
ent lengths and depths, and
lengths for different teeth, in
combination with the angle
bar and adjusting screw.”
The saw set is also not
Stillman’s only invention. He
also patented some improve-
ments on a coffee bean roaster
on Dec. 28, 1840.

machineQ: I have inherited
an old Singersewing machineand wonder if it isworth keeping. —Betty, North Port,FL
A: There are mil-lions of older Singersewing machinestucked away inAmerican homes.Because so manywere made, theyreally aren’t worththat much moneyas a collectible. Most of the treadlemodels that I’veseen in antiqueshops and mallshave been pricedwell below $200.For example, I spot-ted a Singer ModelNo. 15-30 fromabout 1910 for$175, a SingerModel 66 also fromthe same period for$195, and a SingerNo. 27-4 in oak cab-inet, $150. Thereare always excep-tions to every rule.
Check outwww.MySingerSto-ry.com for historicalfacts about theolder machines. It isalso an interactivewebsite that invitesSinger fans fromacross the countryto share their per-sonal stories andmemories of thisiconic machine.
Q: Is there any-thing you can tellme about a vasethat I have. I can’tfind any markingson it. I have alwaysbeen curious about
it and would espe-cially like to knowits value and howold it is.— Carol,Willmer, MN
A: You have sentme a question thatis impossible toanswer. Even withthe picture yousent, identifying thepiece and determin-ing its age wouldtake a professionalappraiser. I thinkyour piece is proba-bly from the 1950sor ‘60s, judging byits design, but thatis only a guess.Having it appraisedmight cost morethan the piece isworth. With that inmind, you mightshow it to antiquedealers in your areafor their opinions.
Q: I have a collec-tion of Look, Lifeand SaturdayEvening Post maga-zines from the1960s and ‘70s.What do you thinkthey are worth? --Meda, Bethalto, Ill.
A: In the case ofmagazines, youtruly can judgethem by their cov-ers. JFK covers, forexample, generallysell for a couple dol-lars more thanmany of the others. Most Look, Life andSaturday EveningPost magazinesfrom this period arefairly plentiful andgenerally retail inthe $5 to $10 rangein shops.

HEATINGThough ceiling
fans are most asso-ciated with warm-weather seasons, most can be effec-tive throughout thewinter months aswell, helping circu-late warm airthroughout a roomin much the sameway they circulatecool air during thewarmer weather. Most of today’s fanshave a switch nearthe motor housingthat alters thedirection in whichthe fan’s bladesturn. When a ceilingfan is used in thesummer, its bladespush the air down-ward, moving coolair around theroom. The air blow-ing around the
room is what coolspeople within theroom. When theblades’ direction isaltered, the bladesthen push the airupward toward theceiling. This drivesthe hot air, whichtypically rises to thetop, down towardthe edges of theroom. This helpscirculate warm airthroughout a room, making for moreeven heating. What’s more, thisimproved heat cir-culation helps com-bat window sweat-ing that resultsfrom condensationon the glass whenhot air is not effec-tively circulatedthroughout a home.

Performers from the
Mohawk Valley enter-
tained what appeared
to be a record crowd
at the Arkell
Performing Arts
Center in the
Canajoharie High
School on Friday, Nov.
2.
“I don’t remember
ever having such a
large crowd,” stated
Variety Show
Chairman Tom
Armitstead.
Armitstead credits
show director Walt
Maaser for doing an
“outstanding job” as
coordinator. “Things
really ran smoothly
with Walt in charge.
We had a lot of favor-
able comments.”
Armitstead also
commends Will Ryan
who acted as Emcee
and the Canajoharie
Computer Science
Interns for doing a
“tremendous job” with
the lights and sound
system.
“We enjoy doing the
show and are always
looking for new people
and new ideas,”
Armitstead comment-
ed. “We like to see the
young talent, watch-
ing them develop and
grow; like the
Dependents, who have
been with us for sever-
al years.”
Armitstead said the
Central Mohawk Lions
extend their thanks to
all who came and per-
formed at the show,
and looks forward to
seeing many of the
performers return for
next year’s 15th
annual ‘November
Stars’ Variety Show.
“We just hope every-
one enjoyed the
show,” remarked
Armitstead.

Pumpkins are a
type of gourd that
grows on just about
every continent
(Antarctica not
included). The major-
ity of pumpkins are
bought and sold
around Halloween,
commonly to convert
to jack-o-lanterns.
However, pumpkins
can be used as a deli-
cious food source.
Here is some other
interesting informa-
tion about pumpkins.
Pumpkins are
believed to have origi-
nated in North
America. Seeds from
pumpkins dating
back to 7000 B.C.
have been found in
Mexico. The name
“pumpkin” evolved
originally from the
Greek word “pepon,”
for large melon. The
French called them
“pompon,” and the
English eventually
changed the word to
“pumpion.”
There are dozens of
varieties of pumpkins
and they come in
many colors, includ-
ing white, besides the
familiar orange. Most
pumpkins can be
harvested for carving.
However, certain vari-
eties are better for
cooking. These
include the
Buckskin, Chelsey,
Dickinson Field, and
Kentucky Field.
It is possible for the
home gardener to
grow pumpkins. It
may take a few tries,
but the results can be
worth it if pumpkins
eventually form. Keep
in mind that
although pumpkin
plants will produce
several flowers
throughout the life of
the plant, a person
can expect only one
to two actual pump-
kins per vine.
Pumpkin plants nat-
urally produce sepa-
rate male and female
flowers on the same
plant for pollination.
Pumpkin plants
should be watered,
but only the roots, in
the early morning or
during the day for
good health. Wet
leaves can lead to
mildew. Later-day
watering may result
in powdery mildew, a
blight that can form
and spread quickly.
Bugs are another
problem that may
destroy a pumpkin
plant. The cucumber
beetle is a carrier of
plant disease.
Of course, if grow-
ing pumpkins seems
too much work, a trip
to a local pumpkin
patch is a good
excursion for fami-
lies. Pumpkins ripen
at the end of summer
into early fall.
However, it could be
best to wait until
later in the season to
pick a pumpkin
because a picked or
carved pumpkin
won’t last forever.

October is Fall CarCare Month, the per-fect time to fall into avehicle maintenanceprogram and get yourcar ready for the chal-lenges of harsh winterweather.
Whether you do ityourself or take yourcar to a professionalservice technician, the Car Care Councilrecommends 10 basicmaintenance proce-dures to keep yourvehicle operating atits best:
1. Check all fluids, including engine oil, power steering, brakeand transmission aswell as windshieldwasher solvent andantifreeze/coolant.
2. Check the hosesand belts to makesure they are notcracked, brittle, frayed, loose or show-ing signs of excessivewear.
3. Check the bat-tery and replace ifnecessary. Make surethe connection isclean, tight and cor-rosion-free.
4. Check the brakesystem annually andhave the brake lin-ings, rotors anddrums inspected ateach oil change.
5. Inspect theexhaust system forleaks, damage andbroken supports orhangers if there is anunusual noise.Exhaust leaks can bedangerous and mustbe corrected without
delay.6. Schedule a tune-
up to help the enginedeliver the best bal-ance of power andfuel economy andproduce the lowestlevel of emissions.
7. Check the heat-ing, ventilating andair conditioning(HVAC) system asproper heating andcooling performanceis critical for interiorcomfort and for safetyreasons such asdefrosting.
8. Inspect the steer-ing and suspensionsystem annuallyincluding shockabsorbers, struts andchassis parts such asball joints, tie rodends and other relat-ed components.

On the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month in 1918, an armistice,or agreement to stop fighting, was reached between the Allied nations and Ger-many in World War I.
One year later, President Woodrow Wilson declared that Nov. 11, 1919 was aday to remember Americans for their military service in World War I. He called itArmistice Day. He suggested that Americans celebrate with parades and perhapsa “brief suspension of business” around 11 a.m. President Wilson also hoped itwould be a time when Americans offered prayers of thanksgiving for those whohad served and for peace for all times.
• President Wilson originally intended Armistice Day to be observed one time, but many states decided to observe it every year to honor World War I veterans.
• Congress followed the states’ lead and in 1938 declared that every Nov. 11would be observed as Armistice Day.
• Congress changed the name to Veterans Day in 1954 to honor veterans of allwars.
• For a brief time, 1971-1974, Veterans Day was observed on the 4th Mondayin October. Since 1975, Veterans Day is always observed on Nov. 11.
• If Nov. 11 falls on a Saturday or Sunday, the federal government observes theholiday on the previous Friday or following Monday, respectively.
• Nov. 11, 1921, when the first of the unknown soldiers was buried in Arling-ton National Cemetery, unidentified soldiers also were laid to rest at Westmin-ster Abbey in London and at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
• Memorial Day, the fourth Monday in May, honors American service memberswho died in service to their country.
• Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans, living or dead, but espe-cially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably duringwar or peacetime.
• States designate their own holidays, so there are no official U.S. national hol-idays. The government can only designate holidays for federal employees and forthe District of Columbia. But states almost always follow the federal lead.
Timeline for Veterans Day observanceNov. 11, 1918: The fighting in World War I ended. (The Treaty of Versailles for-
mally ended the war on June 28, 1919)November 1919: President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed that Nov. 11, 1919,
would be observed as Armistice Day — a day to honor the veterans of World WarI.
Nov. 11, 1921: The first of the unknown soldiers, a veteran of World War I, wasburied in Arlington Cemetery in Virginia in what has become known as the Tombof the Unknown Soldier. On the same day, unidentified soldiers were laid to restat Westminster Abbey in London and at the Arc de Triomphe in Paris.
June 4, 1926: Twenty-seven states had made Armistice Day a holiday so Con-gress declared it to be a recurring day of remembrance.
May 13, 1938: Congress makes Armistice Day a national holiday.June 28, 1968: Congress changed Veterans Day to the fourth Monday in Oc-
tober.Sept. 20, 1975: President Gerald Ford changed Veterans Day back to Nov. 11.Produced by the Missouri Bar, Missouri Press Foundation and your newspa-

• Winterize your home to extend thelife of your fuel supply by insulatingwalls and attics, caulking and weather-stripping doors and windows, and in-stalling storm windows or covering win-dows with plastic.
• Winterize your house, barn, shed orany other structure that may provideshelter for your family, neighbors, live-stock or equipment. Clear rain gutters;repair roof leaks and cut away treebranches that could fall on a house orother structure during a storm.
• Maintain heating equipment andchimneys by having them cleaned andinspected every year.
• Insulate pipes with insulation ornewspapers and plastic and allowfaucets to drip a little during coldweather to avoid freezing. Running wa-ter, even at a trickle, helps preventpipes from freezing.
• All fuel-burning equipment shouldbe vented to the outside and kept clear.
• Keep fire extinguishers on hand, and make sure everyone in your houseknows how to use them. House firespose an additional risk, as more peopleturn to alternate heating sources with-
out taking the necessary safety precau-tions.
• Learn how to shut off water valves(in case a pipe bursts).
• Insulate your home by installingstorm windows or covering windowswith plastic from the inside to keep coldair out.
• Hire a contractor to check the struc-tural ability of the roof to sustain un-usually heavy weight from the accumu-lation of snow - or water, if drains onflat roofs do not work.

Winterize your home
To prepare for a winter storm you should do the following:• Before winter approaches, add the following supplies to your emergency kit:- Rock salt or more environmentally safe products to melt ice on walkways. Vis-
it the Environmental Protection Agency for a complete list of recommended prod-ucts.
- Sand to improve traction.- Snow shovels and other snow removal equipment.- Sufficient heating fuel. You may become isolated in your home and regular fuel
sources may be cut off. Store a good supply of dry, seasoned wood for your fire-place or wood-burning stove.
- Adequate clothing and blankets to keep you warm.
• Make a Family Communications Plan. Your family may not be together whendisaster strikes, so it is important to know how you will contact one another, howyou will get back together and what you will do in case of an emergency.
• Listen to a NOAA Weather Radio or other local news channels for critical infor-mation from the National Weather Service (NWS). Be alert to changing weather con-ditions.
• Minimize travel. If travel is necessary, keep a disaster supplies kit in your ve-hicle.
• Bring pets/companion animals inside during winter weather. Move other ani-mals or livestock to sheltered areas with non-frozen drinking water.

Before winter storms and extreme cold
Storm Sandy blew through UpstateNew York and left a myriad of concernfor our community. Natural disasterslike Storm Sandy can bring out the bestin people, as strangers reach out to helpothers in need. Unfortunately, BBB ex-perience tells us crises also bring outpersons who choose to take advantageof the victims.
Some of the most common “after-dis-aster” scams involve damage done totrees. Seems simple enough however it’simportant to consider Better BusinessBureau tips for homeowners who suf-fered tree damage in the wake of thestorm:
• Check with your insurance compa-ny about policy coverage and specific fil-ing requirements.
• Check the BBB Accredited BusinessDirectory to find a business you cantrust. Not only are these businessescommitted to honest and ethical prac-tices, but BBB has checked licensingrequirements and should something gowrong, these businesses have commit-ted to respond to your concerns.
• Take time to shop around and getthree estimates. For large projects, askthe tree service how many projects likeyours they have completed in the lastyear. Ask for several local referencesthat are at least one year-old and followthrough on checking them.
• Verify with your local city or townmunicipality to determine if tree re-moval businesses are required to be li-censed/registered to do work in yourarea.
• Check to see whether the businessin question is a member of any rep-utable trade association, such as theNYS Arborists.
• Ask if certified arborists, who haveprofessional training and certifications, are on staff. An experienced arborist isparticularly important on projects in-volving large trees or removal of sub-stantial branches on established trees.
• Make sure each tree service you areconsidering has current liability insur-ance and workers compensation insur-ance. All certificates of insuranceshould be sent from the tree service’sinsurance agency directly to you. Other-wise, it could be a fraudulent certificate.
• Require a written contract agree-ment with anyone you hire. Be suretheir name, address, license number, ifapplicable, and phone number are in-cluded in the contract. Read and under-stand the contract in its entirety anddon’t sign a blank contract. A copy ofthe signed contract is to be given to youat time of signature. Do not assumethat tree stump removal is included inthe contract if it is not specified.
• Once you have picked a tree service
you feel comfortable with, never pay fora tree removal or tree trimming projectof any kind until you are 100 percentsatisfied with the work. Pay by creditcard only when the job is complete. Pay-ing by credit card provides some re-course should the job not be completedas stated in the contract.
• Although you may be anxious to getthings back to normal, avoid lettingyour emotions get the better of you.Don’t be pressured into making an im-mediate decision. Be wary of door-to-door solicitations and check to see ifyour community requires them to havesolicitation permits.
Ask how the job will be done, and ifthey will perform the work according toindustry standards. If they mention“topping a tree,” “lion’s-tailing” or “us-ing climbing spikes to prune a tree” thecompany does not follow industry stan-dards. “Topping” is drastically cuttingback the major limbs of a tree to reduceits size. “Lion’s tailing” is an extremestripping out of most of the interiorbranches of a tree. Such practices caninjure or kill your tree.
Some techniques will be presented asa way to save money by removing moreof the tree at one time. However a treepruned by one of these methods usual-ly requires more expensive restorationwork in the future in order to save it.
Beware of a tree service if they:• Don’t have printed materials, letter-
head, bid forms, etc.• Are vague about formal credentials
as an arborist.• Offer an unusually low price . . . at
first.• Only accepts cash payments,
and/or asks for payment up front.• Pressures you for an immediate de-
cision.• Offers you a discount to find other
customers.Residents may also encounter other
types of debris from damaged buildings, household and other types of hazardouswaste. BBB encourages consumers tocheck with the New York Department ofEnvironmental Conservation for infor-mation on where debris may be stored.Remember, your main goal is to regainyour sense of normalcy while doing sowithin the guidelines set by our stateand federal agency.
Disaster victims should never feelforced to make a hasty decision or tochoose an unknown tree service. For re-liable information, lists of BBB Accred-ited Businesses by industry and BBBBusiness Reviews you can trust on localbusinesses, visit bbb.org or call 800-828-5000.

Check or have a mechanic check the following items on your car:• Antifreeze levels - ensure they are sufficient to avoid freezing.• Battery and ignition system - should be in top condition and battery terminals
should be clean.• Brakes - check for wear and fluid levels.• Exhaust system - check for leaks and crimped pipes and repair or replace as
necessary. Carbon monoxide is deadly and usually gives no warning.• Fuel and air filters - replace and keep water out of the system by using addi-
tives and maintaining a full tank of gas. A full tank will keep the fuel line fromfreezing.
• Heater and defroster - ensure they work properly.• Lights and flashing hazard lights - check for serviceability.• Oil - check for level and weight. Heavier oils congeal more at low temperatures
and do not lubricate as well.• Thermostat - ensure it works properly.• Windshield wiper equipment - repair any problems and maintain proper wash-
er fluid level.• Install good winter tires - Make sure the tires have adequate tread. All-weath-
er radials are usually adequate for most winter conditions. However, some jurisdic-tions require that to drive on their roads, vehicles must be equipped with chainsor snow tires with studs.
Update the emergency kits in your vehicles with:• a shovel• windshield scraper and small broom• flashlight• battery powered radio• extra batteries• water• snack food• matches• extra hats, socks and mittens• first aid kit with pocket knife• necessary medications• blanket(s)• tow chain or rope• road salt and sand• booster cables• emergency flares• fluorescent distress flagSource: www.ready.gov
