TRANSCRIPT
As defined by dictionary.com, love is “a pro-
foundly tender, passionate affection for another person.”
Today, people use this word irresponsibly. Many preteens
and middle school students tell their boyfriends and girl-
friends that they “love” each other. However, most of these
ignorant “lovers” haven’t even hit puberty, nor are they at a
mature state of mind. There is a distinct difference be-
tween having love and being in love with someone; recog-
nize this!
Adults are also at fault for misusing this word. The
divorce rates have sky rocketed beyond belief in the past
decade; it is as if marriage has become blasé among people.
If one truly loves someone, then he or she would never
cheat on his or her spouse. They protest, “But I fell in love
with someone else; it wasn’t on purpose.” Well, yes that
could be true, but if these “cheaters”
were married, they must’ve
claimed to be in love. Their next
excuse, “I was in love with my
spouse, but time changed that.” If
two people truly are in love, they
should still be in love
and want to make each
other happy; love is forever. So, if these cheaters were ac-
tually in love, then they would never allow themselves to
be put in situations where they could potentially “fall in
love” for a second time. It’s a shame that love has lost its
meaning.

Young love at Greenwood High School By Alicha Abaya
It appears that Cupid’s arrow has hit these young
couples in Greenwood High School. As they prepare to
spend Valentine’s day together, let’s take a look at what
keeps their love so strong.
Jill and Nicholas
“Food is the way to a man’s heart,” a sentiment
that Jill Tengeres is all too familiar with. “Nick and I are
foodies. We watch the Food Network all the time.”
When they aren’t in the
kitchen cooking together,
they can be found trimming
their waistlines in the
woods with refreshing
hikes. Just don’t stick them
in a kayak!

Cooper and Zoe
This lovely couple be-
lieves they are a cute couple
because they "are both young
looking, have fun, and are
weird." They have been to-
gether for seven months, and
know each other "inside out,
backwards, blindfolded, and
underwater" as they would put it. As Cooper lovingly
put it, “She’s the chicken to my parmesan.”
Salene and Ryan
These two have been to-
gether for one year and are still go-
ing strong. This couple loves to
spend time with each other. “I like
Salene because she’s sweet, funny,
and beautiful,” Ryan said affection-
ately. “When we’re together, we
like going to the movies and out to
eat.”
Colten and Rachael
Rachael and Colten have no
idea why others think they are such
a cute couple, but others think they
are. After spending a year and six
months together, they not only
aren’t sick of each other, but they
also know everything about each
other. “I like Colten because he is
different from everyone else. He cares about me as a
person, and he is a genuinely nice guy,” said Rachael,
smiling.
Kennedy and Grant
This fun couple has been together for two years
and still isn't giving up. They love be-
ing silly with each other, and spend
most of their time together watching tv
and wrestling. Kennedy loves spending
time with Grant because he “is fun to be
around and makes me laugh.” Grant
expressed equal affection for Kennedy,
saying she is “kind, fun, and ,for some
reason, likes me too.”
Matt and Alicha
Known for their contrasting
personalities, this couple is cute,
funny, and witty. After a year and
five short months they have had
more than enough time to learn all
there is to know about each other.
Matt sweetly said, “I like Alicha
because of the feeling I get when she smiles. She’s al-
ways there for me and she makes me happy.”
Jade and Jackson
The love these two show
for each other is what makes them
an adorable couple. According to
Jackson, “I have always liked
Jade, but at first she didn’t like
me. I’ve always wanted to make
her happy.” What made Jade fi-
nally fall for Jackson? “He is a
great guy and a big goofball and
even though sometimes I give
him the eyeballs, he always makes me smile.”

Dear Sweetheart, I recently got this girl’s number from a mutual friend. Her name is Marsha* and I text her all the time. I am really starting to like her and I would love to meet her in person. However, our con-versations tend to be on the boring and predictable side. How do I show that I’m interested in her through a text message? Help! Love, Love at First Text
Dear Love at First Text,
There are a few basic rules to flirting through a
text message. First you should insert smiling, winking,
and tongue-sticking-out faces when appropriate. You
should also initiate playful banter with her on occasion.
Expressing an interest to meet her is also a good idea. If
she seems interested in meeting you too, then you’ll
know she’s into you! Beware of being too forward; you
don’t want to come off as a creep. Best wishes in your
texting (& possibly in person) relationship!
Love,
Sweetheart
Dear Sweetheart,
I really don’t know what to do! I’ve hung out
with this guy a few times lately and he seems to be
really into me. But, I am just not feeling it. He’s
such a sweet guy, so I don’t want to hurt his feelings,
but I need to get rid of him. Is there any way I can let
him down gently? Please help!
Love,
I’m Just Not That Into You
Dear I’m Just Not That Into You,
Letting boys down gently can be a hard task, but I
have some tips that may help you soothe his heartache.
First, you can lightly mention how great it is to be his
friend. Make sure to stress the “just friends” part. If he
asks you hang out again, you should probably turn him
down because you don’t want to give him the wrong idea.
Also, you could try to suggest one of your single friends
to him so that he has somewhere else to direct his atten-
tion. Good luck in letting him down kindly!

Sweetheart

A Dinner for two By Jill Tengeres
The Paw Print
Valentine’s Day is almost here, as I am sure
you all are very well aware. This brings mixed emo-
tions for every individual, varying from giggly excite-
ment to utter disgust. No matter how you feel about
this holiday, you may be obligated to do something
special for your significant other. Instead of buying
your sweetheart humdrum roses and a chocolate as-
sortment, I recommend you go out on a limb this year.
Try cooking a memorable dinner and dessert for the
two of you. Yes, crush the phobia of the kitchen you
may have developed, because the following recipes
are fairly simple, as well as very tasty.
When I think of romantic food, I think of
French cuisine. So, for the main course, try this simple
and delicious version of the French chicken cordon
bleu. As an elegant side, make a quick pasta salad
with watercress, tomatoes, and feta cheese. Be sure
you and your significant other save room for some
sweet sugar cookies for dessert.
Chicken Cordon Blue
Ingredients: 4 skinless, boneless chicken breasts 4 slices of ham lunchmeat 4 slices of provolone cheese flour (for coating) 2 eggs beaten seasoned bread crumbs (for coating) 6 tbsp olive oil Procedure: 1. Slice the chicken breasts about ¾ of the way
through so you can open them and lay them flat. Place one slice of ham and one slice of cheese on one of the cut sides of the chicken.
2. Fold the chicken back over to its original shape, so the ham and cheese is in between the two halves of the chicken. Make sure no cheese or ham is hanging out of the chicken breast.
3. Place three shallow bowls in a row. Coat the bottom of the first bowl with flour, the second bowl with the beaten eggs, and the third bowl with the bread crumbs.
4. Toss each chicken breast in the flour, egg, and bread crumbs. Shake off any excess and make sure it is evenly coated.
5. Heat the oil in a large skillet until the oil bub-bles rapidly when a pinch of flour is dropped in it. Gently put the breasts in the oil and fry on each side for about five minutes each, or more for a large piece of chicken. Serve when
chicken is cooked completely through.
Farfalle with Watercress, Tomatoes and Feta
Ingredients: 8 ounces farfalle pasta
1 cup crumbled reduced-fat feta cheese
2 pints cherry tomatoes, halved
3 cups watercress leaves
¼ teaspoon black pepper
Procedure:
1. Cook pasta according to directions on box.
2. Place cheese in a large bowl; top with water-cress. Before draining pasta, take ¼ cup of the cooking water from the pot and pour it over the watercress. ( Watercress will wilt, and the cheese will soften.)
3. Place tomatoes in a colander. Drain pasta over the tomatoes to blanch them. Toss with water-cress and cheese. Sprinkle with pepper and serve.
White Velvet Sugar Cookies Ingredients: 2 cups butter, softened 1 package (8 ounces) cream cheese, softened 2 cups sugar 2 egg yolks 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

Procedure: 1. In a mixing bowl, cream butter and cream
cheese until light and fluffy. Add sugar, egg yolks, and vanilla; mix well. Add flour gradu-ally.
2. Cover the dough and chill for two hours. 3. Roll dough out on a floured surface to a ¼
inch thickness. Use cookie cutters to shape dough. Decorate with sprinkles if desired. Place one inch apart on a greased cookie sheet. Bake at 350° F for 10-12 minutes until the cookies are set. Remove from oven and let cookies cool on a wire rack.
