Bag

This bag was constructed completely from recycled materials.  The grey wool is from a thrift shop skirt and the lining was a pair of curtains.  In the spirit of this tutorial, I would be delighted if you would do the same!  I used a fairly heavy wool, so the main body of the bag is not interfaced.  If you use a lighter material (such as cotton), I would suggest interfacing the main body of the bag to give it some body.  Let’s dig in…

Step 1Print out pattern as is, please do not shrink unless you want a tiny purse!  Test square should measure 50mm x 50mm on the printed pattern.  Cut out all pattern pieces and trace pattern onto wrong side of fabric and transfer all markings to fabric.  Cut out all fabric and interfacing pieces.  Cut out fabric pieces not on pattern using dimensions in “materials’ section.

Step 2Sew all darts in both outer and lining fabric.  Press all darts away from the centre.

Step 3Determine which will be the front piece of outer fabric (usually the one that looks the best!) and locate the mark for the front snap.  Cut a 3cm x 3cm square of Vilene S350 and iron onto wrong side of fabric so that the middle of the square is on the mark.  This is to reinforce the snap so it doesn’t pull and rip the fabric after repeated use.  Find the female part of the magnetic snap and a disc.

Mark the middle of the interfacing square you just applied.  Take your seam ripper (or small knife) and make two small incisions – each a few mm from the centre dot.  On the right side of the fabric, push the two legs of the snap through the two incisions you just made so it pops out the other side.  Slide the disc over and fold the metal legs over each other.  Oh snap!

Step 4Take your 4cm x 25cm piece of Vilene S520 and iron it to the wrong side of the other main body fabric piece so that it is 1cm from the top and sides as shown. The addition of heavy interfacing here stabilizes the bag and prevents it from sagging (unless you want a slouch!)

Step 5Find the dot on the semicircle piece of front flap fabric.  Install the male part of the snap just like you did in step 3.  Take your semicircle piece of Vilene S320 and trim 1cm from all edges – this is to ensure that your seams are free of interfacing so your layers are easier to sew. Iron the interfacing onto the other flap piece (without the snap).

Step 6Hand stitch your appliqué or button onto the right side of the front flap piece without the snap.  I chose a great flower appliqué from an old shirt that didn’t fit me anymore! Place both semicircles right side together and sew 1cm from the curved edge only, leave the top unsewn.  Trim the seam to 0.5mm and clip to reduce fabric bulk/puckering…not a good look.

Turn the flap right side out and press.  Baste the top edges together so that they match exactly.

Step 7Make the strap by folding the long piece of outer fabric lengthwise to make a 3cm x 86cm piece with wrong sides touching.  Feel free to make the strap as long or as short as you like…that’s the beauty of DIY!  Fold long raw edges in by 1cm, wrong sides touching – pin and press – or just eyeball it and skip the pining like I did.  Fold along main foldline and press so that raw edges are all to the inside.  Sew along both edges quite close to the edge.

Step 8Pin the two outer fabric main body pieces of fabric together, right sides facing.  Try to match up the darts on the top edge.  Sew along the curved side and bottom edges only, 1cm from the edge, stopping at small dot.

Step 9Turn the bag right side out and baste the flap edge to the top edge of the back of the bag.  Baste the strap’s raw edges to the sides of the bag (being careful not to twist the strap!)

Step 10Place the two lining pieces together, right sides facing and sew 1cm from edge as in step 8, except leave a 60mm gap at the bottom edge for turning later on.  Pin the bag straps out of the way so they don’t get caught in the stitching.  Slip the outer fabric bag into the lining, right sides facing.

Line up all raw edges so that they are all even and pin regularly

Sew along the top edge 1cm from the edge making sure you sew through all layers (take your time!).  I typically also run a few extra lines of stitching where the handles attach to the bag on the sides –this is simply for strength.

You’re almost done!  Go have a treat.

Step 11.This is where the fun ‘really’ begins!  Pull the outer fabric through the gap in the lining and turn the bag right side out…be gentle.

Step 12.Push the lining into the bag and press along the upper edges to make sure the lining sits neatly inside the bag.  You’re done, good job!  Now that that sweetheart of yours out for coffee.
