Vacuum Vessel Design Modification and Stress Analysis
Neway AtnafuPPPL, NSTX Design Review Meeting
September 14, 2011
Reinforcements
Two 3”X6.671”X41” Column surrounding Bay-L.
Four 1” thick SS plated on the corners of Bay-K.
Two ¾” thick 90° angles near Bay-K.
Two 2” thick bridges b/n Bay-L and Bay-A.
Two 2” Gussets around Bay-L.
And, Fillet weld around Bays K, L and A.
Analysis Result
FIDA
The FIDA Tube (which is 5.03” OD and 5/8” thick) is fully welded to the VV.
FIDA Tube is cut 1” away from the VV
FIDA is OK!
Bay KGood News? It’s compressive stress; meaning no
fatigue concern! If we’re fine with that, Bay-K is OK!
Bay L
The stress is below the yield point; but needs discussion.
Good News? It’s compression stress!!
Can’t put more gussets in that area, as the space is needed for RWM Coils.
Bridges
Again, the stress in the affected area is compression stress.
So, it will yield locally and vanishes.
Bay A
Bay-A is OK!
Thomson Scattering
