About Vacancysoft Data

This report is has been produced based on analysis of over 8,000 IT and HR vacancies within the Life Sciences industry between March 2015 and March 2017.

We have seen significant growth in the number of new HR vacancies, up 9.3% in the 12 months ending March 2017 vs the previous 12-month period. The Life Sciences industry has clearly identified a collective focus on acquiring high calibre talent, which has generated a significant volume of Recruitment Specialist roles, accounting for 18% of all HR vacancies during the previous 24 months. The trajectory is definitely upwards, with February 2017 14% higher than February 2016 and March 2017 an incredible 52% higher than March 2016. It all points to a positive outlook, particularly within the ‘Big Pharma’ sector, where 83% of new roles have been generated in the previous 24 months.

Whilst IT hasn’t seen the same growth percentage as the rapidly growing HR sector, the 12-month period ending March 2017 was 1.5% up on the previous 12-month period. Much like the recent upturn in new vacancies in 2017 in HR, IT showed 29% growth in Q1 of 2017 vs Q4 of 2016, and 24% more than Q1 of 2016, which again points to signs of a strong bounce back in IT throughout the remainder of 2017. Again ‘Big Pharma’ accounts for the largest proportion of positive change with 10% more vacancies in the period ending March 2017 that the previous 12-month period.

The top 10 firms once again dominate the share of new vacancies, with 22% of new roles in HR in the 12-month period ending March 2017 and 65% of new roles in IT in the previous 24-month period ending March 2017 coming from them.

Despite the EMA preparing to leave London, the outlook is positive for vacancies within the core areas of HR & IT.

Yvette Cleland CEO | Clinical Professionals Ltd

Our data set for this report contains information on 5,374 vacancies for IT posts and 2,869 vacancies for HR posts, all in the Life Sciences industry. These vacancies were found during normal Vacancysoft operations, duplicates were eliminated and the vacancies were processed according to Vacancysoft’s proprietary rules. All of the vacancies in the data set were found between 1 April 2015 and 31 March 2017, and they all came from companies that had posted at least one job before the start of that period. All of the vacancies were based in the EEA or eight other European nations (Belarus, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Norway, Russia, Serbia, Switzerland, Turkey, and Ukraine). Excluded from the data are vacancies from companies which were new to Vacancysoft during the period under review and those from companies for which it was not possible to produce a consistent data set.

HR Vacancies

Given the political uncertainty facing Europe, and less than entirely favourable economic conditions, demand from the Life Sciences industry for HR staff was remarkable strong. The number of vacancies for HR professionals in the 12-month period which ended on 31 March 2017 was 9.3% higher than the number for the previous 12-month period. It is notable that, although there were falls month to month, each quarter from Q3 2016 to Q1 2017 had more vacancies than the previous quarter. Furthermore, each of those quarters also had more newly announced posts than the corresponding quarter of 2015/2016. With such continued growth, it is no surprise that the trend-line for the last 24 months is distinctly upwards.

Looking at the number of HR vacancies in each month, the last nine months of 2016 show fairly steady if unspectacular growth, with minor falls (4% and 2%, respectively) in September and November, ending the nine-month period up 11%. Together those nine months had 4% more vacancies than the same months in 2015. Interestingly, December 2016 did not see the drop-off in hiring often seen in the holiday period, with 2% more vacancies than November 2016 and 28% more than December 2015. The first three months of 2017 saw continued high levels of demand for HR staff. The number of vacancies in February 2017 was 14% higher than the number in February 2016, while March 2017 saw 52% more newly announced posts than the previous March.

In terms of the three sectors of the Life Sciences industry, it’s no surprise that more than four in every five new HR positions over the 24-month period (83%) were announced by the traditional ‘Big Pharma’ sector. Almost all of the increased demand was due to firms from that sector, which had 18% more vacancies in the 12 months ended 31 March 2017 than in the previous 12-month period. By contrast CROs announced 31% fewer new posts 12-month period on 12-month period.

HR Vacancies (cont.)

Although the UK accounted for 25% of all HR vacancies over the 24-month period ended 31 March 2017, the nation saw below average growth in newly announced posts, up only 4% 12-month period on 12-month period. The star performances were by CEE nations. The Czech Republic experienced a 163% surge in the number of newly announced vacancies (91 more posts) and jumped from sixth position to fourth. Poland, where AstraZeneca is moving some UK jobs, saw even faster growth, up by 182%, i.e. 51 more posts. The biggest fall was the 42% drop by Denmark, where Novo Nordisk and Leo Pharma both announced hundreds of redundancies in Q4 2016.

Breaking down the data into the various specialisms shows that Recruitment specialists are still the most sought-after staff, accounting for 18% of all HR vacancies during the 24-month period under review. However, growth there was just 3% 12-month period on 12-month period. The fastest growth in percentage terms was in demand for Administration staff, which was up by 54%. The largest growth when looking at number of newly announced posts was for Employee Relations personnel, where there were 30 more vacancies 12-month period on 12-month period, which equated to a 22% increase.

It is interesting that the top ten firms in the dataset (shown in the table opposite) had much faster growth in HR vacancies than the average for the industry. Taken together they announced 22% more new posts in the 12 months ended 31 March 2017 than they had in the previous 12-month period. This excellent growth resulted in their share in all HR posts announced by the Life Sciences industry rising from 54% to 61%. The best growth both n percentage terms and number of vacancies was by Johnson and Johnson, with a 134% increase that equated to 106 more vacancies. Interestingly that firm announced 86 HR posts in its Prague office during the most recent 12-month period.

IT Vacancies

Unfortunately, demand from the Life Sciences Industry for IT professions in the 12 months ended 31 March 2017 did not match the strong growth seen for HR staff. However, those 12 months did have more IT vacancies than the previous 12 months, 1.5% more. And in times of such uncertainty, with the EMA preparing to leave London for an as-yet unknown destination, and possible new homes ranging from Amsterdam to Zagreb, any growth at all must be regarded as an achievement.

The 12-month period started well, with IT vacancies in Q2 2016 14% higher than the number in Q1 2016 (and 8% higher than Q2 2015) but that was followed by a fall of 18% in the next quarter. After slight (3%) growth in Q4 2016, there was a strong recovery in the first quarter of 2017, which saw 29% more vacancies than the previous quarter and 24% more than Q1 2016. This excellent growth resulted in the trend-line for the 24-month period being slightly upwards as opposed to distinctly downwards.

In terms of individual months, the first full month after the Brexit vote, July 2016, was the first in a six-month period in which there were fewer IT vacancies than in the corresponding months of 2015. The low-water mark for the 24-month period came in September 2016, which had 19% fewer newly announced posts than that month in 2015. However, the market recovered very well in the first months of 2017. January 2017 had 44% more vacancies than December 2016 and 23% more than the previous January, while March 2017 had the highest demand in the 24-month period, a whopping 71% more vacancies than March 2016.

Of the three sectors which make up the Life Sciences sector, only ‘Big Pharma’ saw positive change, with 10% more vacancies in the 12 months ended 31 March 2017 than in the previous 12 months. Biotech firms and CROs saw falls of 23% and 30%, respectively.

IT Vacancies (cont.)

Two changes in the geographical distribution of IT vacancies in the 12 months ended 31 March 2017 compared to the previous 12-month period catch the eye, and both are in CEE nations. Poland had the best growth, both in percentage terms, up by 74%, and increased number of vacancies, with 117 more. GlaxoSmithKline continued to expand its IT centre in Poznan, with new IT positions increasing from 61 to 124. Qiagen opened an office in Poznan in late 2015 and increased IT hiring from 4 posts to 36; in December 2016 Qiagen signed a deal to more than double the size of its Poznan office. The Czech Republic saw the largest fall in number of vacancies, down from 276 to 206. However, almost all of that change in demand was due to a single company, Novartis, which in H2 2015 had doubled the size of its Prague IT centre.

The leading IT specialism in both of the 12-month periods under review was IT Management, which accounted for 26% of all vacancies. However, demand for those staff was virtually unchanged period to period. The largest increase in vacancies was the 82-post rise in newly announced positions for IT Infrastructure specialists, which equated to a 19% increase. That came as a result of double-digit rises in the number of posts for Network Engineers (21 more posts), SAP Managers (15 more), Systems Engineers (11 more) and Solutions Architects (up 10). It was also despite a 27-post (46%) fall in vacancies for SAP Consultants.

The top ten firms in the dataset were together the source of 65% of all vacancies in the 24-month period under review. They collectively announced 1.6% more new openings in the 12 months ended 31 March 2017 than they had in the previous 12 months, which was very similar to the 1.5% growth recorded by the industry as a whole but only actually equated to 28 more posts than in the previous period.
