O Jesus Christ, my Lord, with what great love You passed

over the painful road which led You to death; and I, how

often have I abandoned You! But now I love You with my

whole soul, and because I love You, I am sincerely sorry for

having offended You. My Jesus, pardon me, and permit me

to accompany you on this journey. You are going to die for

love of me, and it is my wish also, O my dearest Redeemer,

to die for love of You. In your love I wish to live, in your

love I wish to die.

Jesus Falls the First

Time Under His Cross

V Consider this first fall of

Jesus under His Cross. His flesh

was torn by the scourges, His head crowned with thorns, and He had lost a great quantity of blood. He was so weakened He could scarcely walk, and yet He had to carry this great load upon His shoulders. The

soldiers struck Him rudely, and thus He fell several times.

R My Jesus, it is the weight not of the Cross but of my

sins, which has made You suffer so much pain. By the merits of this first fall, deliver me from the misfortune of falling

into mortal sin.

Afflicted Mother

V Consider the meeting of the

Son and the Mother which took

place on this journey. Their looks became like so many arrows

to wound those hearts which loved each other so tenderly.

R My sweet Jesus, by the sorrow You experienced in this

meeting, grant me the grace of a truly devoted love for Your

most holy mother. And you, my queen, overwhelmed with sor-

row, obtain for me by your intercession a continual and tender

remembrance of the passion of Your Son.

Jesus to Carry His Cross

V Consider how the Jews, seeing

that at each step Jesus was on the

point of expiring, and fearing He would die on the way, when they wished Him to die the igno-minious death of the Cross, constrained Simon the Cyrenean to carry the Cross behind our Lord.

R My most beloved Jesus, I will not refuse the Cross; I accept

it, I embrace it. I accept, in particular, the death You have destined for me, with all the pains which may accompany it: I unite it to Your death; I offer it to You. You have died for love

of me; I will die for love of You. Help me by Your grace.

R Jesús mío, no quiero rehusar la cruz como el cirineo,

antes bien, la acepto y la abrazo. Acepto la muerte contodas las penas que la acompañan, la uno a la tuya y te la ofrezco. Tú quisiste morir por mi amor y yo quiero morir por el tuyo.

of Jesus

V Consider how the holy woman

named Veronica, seeing Jesus so

abused, and His face bathed in sweat and blood, presented Him with a towel, with which He wiped His adorable face, leaving on it the impression of His holy countenance.

R My most beloved Jesus! Your face was beautiful before, but

in this journey it has lost all its beauty, and wounds and blood have disfigured it. Alas, my soul also was once beautiful when it received Your grace in baptism, but I have disfigured it since

by my sins; You alone, my Redeemer, can restore it to its for-mer beauty. Do this by Your Passion, O Jesus!

jornada las heridas y la sangre han cambiado tu hermosura. Señor mío, también mi alma quedó hermosa por el bautismo, mas yo la he cambiado con mis pecados. Sólo tú puedes restituirle su belleza. Hazlo por los méritos de tu pasión.

Daughters of Jerusalem

V Consider how these women

wept with compassion at seeing

Jesus in such a pitiable state, with blood as He walked along. “My children,” said He, “weep not for Me, but for your-selves and for your children.”

R My Jesus, laden with sorrows! I weep for the offenses I

have committed against You, because of the pains they have deserved, and still more because of the displeasure they have caused You, who loves me so much. It is Your love more than the fear of hell which causes me to weep for my sins.

Jesus Christ. His weakness was

extreme, and the cruelty of His executioners excessive. They tried to hasten His steps when He could scarcely move.

R My outraged Jesus, by the merits of the weakness You

suffered in going to Calvary, give me strength to conquer all human respect and all my wicked passions, which have led me to despise Your friendship.

Jesus Is Stripped of

His Garments

V Consider the violence with

which the executioners stripped

Jesus. His inner garments ad-hered to His torn flesh, and they dragged them off so rough-ly that the skin came with them. Feel compassion for your Savior thus cruelly treated.

R My innocent Jesus, by the merits of the torment you felt,

help me to strip myself of all affection of things of earth, in order that I may place all my love in You, who are so worthy of my love.






Holy Mother, pierce me through, In my heart each wound renew Of my Savior crucified.

Jesus Is Nailed to

the Cross

being placed on the Cross,

extended His hands, and offered to His Eternal Father the sacrifice of His life for our salva-tion. These barbarians fastened Him with nails, and then, securing the Cross, al-

lowed Him to die with anguish on this infamous gibbet.

R My Jesus, loaded with contempt, nail my heart to Your

feet, that it may ever remain there to love You, and never quit You again.






Let me share with thee His pain, Who for all my sins was slain, Who for me in torment died.

three hours’ agony on the Cross, being consumed with anguish, abandoned Himself to the weight of His body, bowed His head and died.

R O my dying Jesus! I kiss devoutly the Cross on which

You died for love of me. I have merited by my sins to die a miserable death, but Your death is my hope. By the merits of Your death, give me grace to die embracing Your feet and

burning with love for You. I commit my soul into Your hands.

Jesus Is Taken Down From

the Cross

V Consider how our Lord, having

expired, two of His disciples, Jo-

seph and Nicodemus, took Him down from the Cross and placed Him in the arms of His afflict-ed mother. She received Him with unutterable tenderness, and pressed Him to her bosom.

R O Mother of Sorrow for the love of your Son accept me for

your servant and pray for me. And You, my Redeemer, since You have died for me, permit me to love You; for I wish only You and nothing more.






By the cross with thee to stay; There with thee to weep and pray, All I ask of thee to give.

Jesus Is Placed

in the Sepulcher

V Consider how the disciples

carried the body of Jesus to bury

it, accompanied by His holy mother, who arranged it in the sepulcher with her own hands. They then closed the tomb, and all withdrew.

R My buried Jesus, I kiss the stone that encloses You. But

You rose again the third day. I beseech You by Your Resurrec-tion to make me rise in glory with You on the last day, to be always united with You in heaven, to praise You and love You forever.






Virgin of all Virgins blest! Listen to my fond request: Let me share thy grief divine.

V Considera cómo los discípu-

los llevaron a enterrar a Jesús, acompañándole también su san-tísima madre, que lo depositó en

el sepulcro con sus propias manos. Después cerraron la puerta del sepulcro y se retiraron.

R Jesús mío sepultado, beso esa piedra que te encierra. Tú

resucitaste después de tres días. Por tu resurrección te suplico que me hagas resucitar glorioso el día del juicio final para estar eternamente contigo en la gloria, amándote y bendiciéndote.
